(b. April 23, 1897, Toronto--d. Dec. 27, 1972, Ottawa), politician, diplomat, and prime
minister of Canada, who was prominent as a mediator in international disputes in 1963-68.
Pearson served in World War I (1914-18) and lectured in history at the
University of Toronto (1924-28), after studying there and at the University of Oxford. He
joined the Canadian foreign service in 1928 and became first secretary in the Department
of External Affairs. He served on two royal commissions (1931) and as counselor of the
Canadian high commissioner's office in London (1935).
Recalled to Canada in 1941, Pearson then served as ambassador to the United
States in 1945-46. He headed the Canadian delegation at the United Nations from 1948 to
1956, and he was president of the United Nations General Assembly in 1952-53. In 1948 he
became secretary of state for external affairs in the Liberal government of Louis Saint
Laurent and entered Parliament for Algoma East. He represented Canada at the founding of
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949, and in 1951 he was chairman of that
organization. In 1957 he received the Nobel Prize for Peace for his efforts to solve the
Suez crisis of 1956. Pearson succeeded Saint Laurent as leader of the Liberal Party
in 1958 and became prime minister in 1963; he resigned as prime minister in 1968 and
retired from politics.

세계대전(1914~18)에 참전했고, 토론토대학교와
옥스퍼드대학교에서 공부한 후 1924~28년 토론토대학교에서
역사강의를 맡았다. 1928년 캐나다 외무부에 들어가서
외무부의 1등서기관이 되었다. 2개의 왕립위원회(1931)와 런던
주재 캐나다 고등판무관실의 참사관(1935)으로 일했다. 1941년
본국으로 소환된 후 피어슨은 1945~46년 주미 대사로 활약했다.
1948~56년 국제연합(UN)에 파견된 캐나다 대표단을 이끌었고
1952~53년 UN 총회 의장을 역임했다. 1948년 루이 생 로랑 자유당
정권의 외무장관을 지냈고 동(東)앨고마 의회에 참여했다.
또한 1949년 북대서양조약기구(NATO) 설립시 캐나다를
대표했고 1951년 NATO의 의장이 되었다. 1957년에는 1956년
수에즈 위기를 해결하는 데 기울인 그의 노력을 인정받아
노벨 평화상을 수상했다. 피어슨은 1958년 자유당 당수로서
생 로랑의 뒤를 이었고 1963년 총리가 되었다. 1968년 총리직을
사임하면서 정치일선에서 은퇴했다.
