Fried,
Alfred Hermann (b. Nov. 11, 1864,
Vienna--d. May 5, 1921, Vienna), Austrian pacifist, publicist, co-founder of the
German peace movement, and co-winner (with Tobias Asser) of the Nobel Prize for
Peace in 1911.
In 1891 Fried, in Berlin, founded the pacifist periodical Die
Waffen nieder! ("Lay Down Your Arms!"), from 1899 called Friedenswarte
("The Peacekeeper"). In 1892 he founded the Deutsche
Friedensgesellschaft (German Peace Society), which became the focus for the
German pacifist movement before World War I. Fried advocated "fundamental pacifism" and believed that
"international anarchy" should be met by both legislative measures and
spiritual regeneration.
With the outbreak of World War I he
immigrated to Switzerland in protest against German policy. As editor of Blätter
für internationale Verständigung und zwischenstaatliche Organisation
("Papers for International Understanding and Inter-State
Organization"), he worked for an immediate peace. Fried
protested against the Treaty of Versailles but warned the Germans against
attempting to revise it by force. His works include Handbuch
der Friedensbewegung, 2 vol. (1911-13; "Handbook of the Peace
Movement"), and Mein Kriegtagebuch,
4 vol. (1918-20; "My War Diary").

오스트리아의 평화주의자·정치평론가.
독일 평화운동의 지도자이며, 1911년 토비아스 아세르와
공동으로 노벨 평화상을 받았다. 프리트는 1891년 베를린에서
평화주의적인 잡지 〈무기를 내려놓아라! Die Waffen nieder!〉(1899년
〈평화의 수호자 Friedenswarte〉로 개칭)를 창간했다. 1892년
평화주의 작가 베르타 폰 주트너의 도움을 받아 제1차
세계대전 무렵까지 독일 평화운동의 구심점이 된
독일평화협회를 세웠다. 프리트는 '근본적 평화주의'를
옹호했으며, 법률적인 수단과 정신개조로 '국제적인 무정부
상태'에 대처해야 한다고 주장했다.
제1차 세계대전의 발발과 함께 프리트는 독일의 정책에
항의하여 즉시 스위스로 갔다. 그는 〈국제적인 이해와
국제조직을 위한 신문 Blätter für internationale Verständigung
und zwischenstaatliche Organisation〉의 편집인으로서 시급한 평화
회복을 위해 노력했다. 그는 베르사유 조약에 반대했으나,
독일이 이를 무력으로 변경하려는 시도에 대해서도
경고했다. 저서로는 〈평화운동에 관하여 Handbuch der Friedensbewegung〉(2권,
1911~13)·〈전쟁 일지 Mein Kriegtagebuch〉(4권, 1918~20) 등이 있다.
