Angell, Sir Norman, original name RALPH NORMAN ANGELL-LANE (b. Dec. 26, 1873, Holbeach, Lincolnshire, Eng.--d. Oct. 7, 1967, Croydon, Surrey), English economist and worker for international peace who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1933.

After an education in France, London, and Geneva, he spent several years (1890-98) in the United States, working as a cowboy, a prospector, and finally a journalist for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and San Francisco Chronicle. Upon his return to Europe, other editorial posts followed, notably editorship of Galignani's Messenger (1899-1903) and Foreign Affairs (1928-31).

Angell's most famous work, The Great Illusion (1910), translated into more than a score of languages, tried to establish the fallacy of the idea that conquest and war brought a nation great economic advantage and insured its living space and access to markets, trade, and raw materials. The Great Illusion, 1933 (1933) explored the economic developments and ideas of the 23 years since publication of the first edition. Angell's literary output was great, producing sometimes more than one book a year. He also invented the Money Game, a series of card games using paper money to teach the fundamentals of currency and credit.

세계 평화를 위해 일했으며, 1933년 노벨 평화상을 수상했다. 프랑스·런던·제네바에서 공부를 한 뒤 1890~98년 미국에서 목동, 투기업자로 전전하다가 〈세인트루이스 글로브-데모크라트 St. Louis Globe-Democrat〉지와 〈샌프란시스코 코로니클 San Francisco Chronicle〉지에서 기자로 일했다. 유럽으로 돌아온 에인절은 〈갈리냐니스 메신저 Galignani's Messenger〉(1899~1903)와 〈외교문제 Foreign Affairs〉(1928~31)를 위시한 여러 신문의 편집인을 역임했다. 그의 가장 유명한 저작은 20개국 이상의 언어로 번역된 〈거대한 환상 The Great Illusion〉(1910)이다. 이 작품에서 에인절은 정복과 전쟁이 한 나라에 커다란 경제적 이익과 생활 공간을 가져다주고 시장과 교역, 원료를 확보시켜준다는 주장이 완전히 기만이라고 역설했다. 〈거대한 환상, 1933 The Great Illusion, 1933〉(1933)에서 그는 제1판 발행 이후 23년 동안의 경제발전과 경제사상들을 분석했다. 왕성하게 작품활동을 한 에인절은 어떤 때는 1년에 1권 이상의 책을 출판하기도 했다. 그는 화폐와 신용의 근본원리들을 가르치기 위해 지폐를 사용하는 일종의 카드 게임인 머니 게임을 고안하기도 했다.
