Foster, Abigail Kelley, née
KELLEY, byname ABBY (b. Jan. 15, 1810, Pelham, Mass., U.S.--d. Jan. 14,
1887, Worcester, Mass.), American feminist, abolitionist, and lecturer.
Converted to the cause of abolition in
the 1830s, Abby Kelley became active in the Lynn (Mass.) Female Anti-Slavery
Society. In 1838 she joined the abolitionist leader William Lloyd Garrison in
organizing the New England Non-Resistance Society. The next year she embarked on
a long career as a political lecturer; her public addresses gained her
nationwide fame and notoriety in an era when the presentation of political
speeches by women to "mixed" audiences (of men and women) was the
subject of controversy. Kelley's insistence on participating in the business
affairs of the American Anti-Slavery Society in
1840 resulted in the splintering of that group when those opposed to women's
public activities left the organization.
In 1845 she married Stephen Symonds
Foster (died 1881), an abolitionist who joined her on the lecture circuit. In
the 1850s she added the causes of temperance and women's rights to her speaking
agenda. She and her husband refused to pay their taxes in the 1870s, claiming
that she had been taxed without representation, since she could not vote.
