THE KINGDOM OF GOD

하나님의 나라

Therefore the will of the Father is the life and welfare of all men.

그러므로 아버지의 뜻은 삶이요 모든 사람의 행복이다

“나라이 임하옵소서”

JESUS went about in the towns and villages and taught all men the happiness of doing the Father's will. And he was sorry for people because they perish without knowing what true life consists of, and trouble and torment themselves without knowing why, like scattered sheep that have no shepherd.

예수는 마을과 동네들을 돌아 다녔다 그리고 모든 사람들에게 아버지의 뜻을 행하는 행복을 가르쳤다. 그리고 그는 사람들에게 안타까움을 느꼈으니, 왜냐하면 그들은 참된 삶이 무엇인지를 모른 채 소멸되어야 하며, 양치기가 없이 흩어진 양들처럼, 이유를 모른 채로 수고를 하며 고통 받아야 하기 때문이다.

Once many people came to Jesus to hear his teaching and he went up on a hill and sat down. His pupils surrounded him. And he began to teach the people what the Father's will is. He said:

한번은 많은 사람들이 그의 가르침을 들으려고 예수에게 왔다 그리고 그는 언덕에 올라가서 앉았다. 그의 제자들이 그를 둘러쌌다. 그리고 그는 아버지의 뜻이 무엇인지를 사람들에게 가르치기 시작했다. 그가 말했다:

Blessed are the poor and the homeless, for they live in the will of the Father. If they are hungry they shall be satisfied, and if they sorrow and weep they shall be comforted. If people despise them, thrust them aside, and drive them away, let them be glad of it, for so God's people have always been treated and they receive a heavenly reward.

가난하고 집이 없는 사람들은 복이 있다, 왜냐하면 그들은 아버지의 뜻에 따라 살기 때문이다. 그들이 배가 고프면 채워 주실 것이고, 그리고 그들이 슬퍼하고 울면은 위안을 받을 것이다. 사람들이 그들을 싫어하고, 옆으로 밀고, 그리고 그들을 몰아 내면, 그것을 즐거워 하도록 두라, 왜냐하면 하나님의 사람들은 언제나 그렇게 대접을 받았으며 그리고 천국의 보상을 받기 때문이다.

But woe to the rich, for they have already got what they wanted, and will get nothing more.

Now they are satisfied, but they too will be hungry. Now they rejoice, but they too will be sad. Woe to those whom everyone praises, for only deceivers are praised by everybody.

이제 그들이 만족하였으니 그들 역시 배가 고플 것이다. 이제 그들이 즐거워하니, 그들 또한 슬플 것이다. 모든 사람들이 칭송하는 사람들은 비통해 할 것이다, 왜냐하면 오직 사기꾼들만이 모든 사람에게 칭송받기 때문이다.

Blessed are the poor and homeless; but blessed only if they are poor not merely outwardly but also in spirit-just as salt is good only when it has saltness in it and is not salt merely in appearance.

가난하며 집이 없는 사람들은 복이 있다; 하지만 그들이 외양으로만 가난할 뿐만 아니라 영이 가난할 때에 복이 있다-마치 소금이 그 안에 짠 맛을 가질 때 유익하며 겉모양 만으로는 소금이 아닌 것과 같다.

So you also, the poor and homeless, are the teachers of the world; you are blessed if you know that true happiness is in being homeless and poor. But if you are poor only outwardly then, like salt that has no savor, you are good for nothing. You are the light of the world, therefore do not hide your light but let men see it. When a man lights a candle he does not put it under the bench but on the table that it should give light to everyone in the room. So you, too, should not hide your light but show it by your actions, that men may see that you have the truth, and seeing your good deeds may understand your heavenly Father.

그처럼, 가난하고 집이 없는 여러분은 또한 세상의 교사들이다; 진정한 행복이 집이 없고 가난함에 있다는 것을 안다면 여러분은 복이 있다. 그러나 여러분이 단지 겉으로만 가난하다면, 맛이 없는 소금처럼, 여러분은 아무런 쓸모가 없다. 여러분은 세상의 빛이다, 그러므로 그 빛을 숨기지 말고 사람들이 보도록 하라. 사람이 촛불을 켤 때에 그것을 의자 밑에 두지 않으며, 방에 있는 모든 사람들에게 비추도록 상위에 둔다. 그래서 여러분 또한 여러분의 빛을 숨겨서는 안되며, 여러분의 행동으로 그것을 보이도록 하라, 그리하여 사람들이 여러분이 진리를 가지고 있으며, 그리고 당신의 선한 행위를 보고서 여러분의 천국의 아버지를 이해할 수 있도록 하라.

And do not think that I free you from the law. I teach not release from the law but fulfillment of the eternal law. As long as there are men under heaven the eternal law remains. There will be no release from law till men of themselves fulfill the eternal law completely. And now, I give you the commandments of that eternal law. If anyone releases himself from any of these short commandments and teaches others that they may do so, he shall be least in the kingdom of heaven, but he who fulfills them and thereby teaches others to fulfill them shall be great in the kingdom of heaven. For if your virtue is no more than the virtue of the Orthodox legalists you will never reach the kingdom of heaven.

These are the commandments:

In the former law it was said: Do not kill, and if anyone kills another he must be judged.

옛날 율법에는 이렇게 기록되었다: ‘살인하지 말라, 누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라.’

But I tell you that everyone who grows angry with his brother-man deserves judgment, and still more to blame is he who speaks abusively to his brother-man.

그러나 나는 여러분에게 누구라도 그의 형제에게 화를 내면 심판을 받음이 마땅하며, 더욱 비난 받을 사람은 그의 형제에게 욕을 하는 사람임을 말한다.

So if you wish to pray to God, first think whether there is anyone who has something against you. If you remember even one man who considers that you have offended him, leave your prayers and go first to make peace with your brotherman, and then you may pray. Know that God requires neither sacrifice nor prayer, but only peace, concord, and love among men; and that you can neither pray nor think of God if there is a single man towards whom you do not feel love.

그래서 여러분은 하나님께 기도를 드리고 싶거든, 먼저 누군가 당신에게 반목하는 무엇인가를 가지고 있는지 생각해 보라. 만일 단 한 사람이라도 그가 생각건대 당신이 그를 화내게 한 일이 있거든, 당신의 기도를 그만두고 가서 먼저 당신의 형제와 화평을 하라, 그리고 그런 다음에 기도를 하여야 할 것이다. 하나님은 제물도 기도도 요구하지 않는다, 하지만 오직 평화, 화합, 그리고 사람들 사이의 사랑을 요구하신다는 것을 알라; 그리고 만일 단 한 사람이라도 당신이 사랑을 느끼지 않는다면 기도를 드리거나 하나님을 생각할 수 없다는 것을 알라.

So this is the first commandment: Do not be angry, and do not rail; and if you have spoken harshly to anyone make peace with him and do it so that no one should have a grudge against you.

그래서, 이것이 첫째 계명이다: 화를 내지 말라 그리고 욕설을 하지 말라; 그리고 당신이 누군가와 다투었으면 그와 화해를 하라, 그리고 그렇게 행하므로 아무도 당신을 향해서 원한을 가지게 해서는 안 된다.

In the former law it was said: Do not commit adultery, and if you wish to put away your wife, give her a letter of divorcement.

옛날 율법에 이렇게 기록되었다: ‘간음치 말라, 그리고 너의 아내를 버리거든 이혼 증서를 주거라.’

But I tell you that if you look lustfully at a woman's beauty you are already committing adultery. All sensuality destroys the soul, and so it is better for you to renounce the pleasures of the flesh than to destroy your life.

그러나 나는 여러분이 여자의 아름다움을 음욕으로 쳐다보면 여러분은 이미 간음을 범하고 있다는 것을 말한다. 모든 음란함은 마음을 파괴한다, 그리고 그런 연유로 여러분은 삶을 파괴하는 것보다 육의 쾌락을 포기하는 것이 더 낫다.

And if you put away your wife, then besides being vicious yourself you drive her to wantonness too, as well as him with whom she may unite.

그리고 여러분이 자신의 아내를 버린다면, 자신을 악하게 하는 것 외에도, 여러분은 그녀와 결합할 지 모르는 사람은 물론 그녀도 역시 부정함으로 몰고 가는 것이다.

So that is the second commandment: Do not think that love of a woman is good, do not desire women, but live with her with whom you have become united, and do not leave her.

그리하여 그것이 둘째 계명이다: 여자에 대한 사랑이 선하다고 생각하지 말라, 여자들을 탐하지 말라, 하지만 여러분이 결합한 여자와 살아라, 그리고 그녀를 버리지 말라.

In the former law it was said: Do not utter the name of the Lord God in vain, do not call upon God when lying, and do not dishonor the name of your God. Do not swear to any untruth and so profane your God.

옛날 율법에서 이렇게 기록되었다: ‘주 하나님의 이름을 헛되이 부르지 말라, 거짓말을 하면서 하나님을 부르지 말라, 그리고 너의 하나님의 이름을 모욕하지 말라. 거짓으로 맹세하지 말라 그리고 그리하여 하나님을 욕되게 하지 말라.’

But I tell you that every oath is a profanation of God. Therefore do not swear at all. Man cannot promise anything, for he is wholly in the power of the Father. He cannot make one gray hair black. How then can he swear beforehand that he will do this or that, and swear to it by God? Every oath is a profanation of God, for if a man is compelled to fulfill under an oath that which is against the will of God it shows that he had promised to act contrary to God's will, and so every oath is an evil. But when men ask you about anything, say Yes if it is yes, or no if it is no; anything added to that is evil.

하지만 나는 모든 맹세가 하나님을 모독하는 것임을 여러분에게 말한다. 그러므로 도무지 맹세하지 말라. 사람은 아무것도 약속할 수 없다, 왜냐하면 사람은 전적으로 아버지의 권능 안에 있기 때문이다. 사람은 한 터럭의 하얀 머리카락도 검게 할 수 없다. 그렇다면 어떻게 하여 그가 사전에 맹세를 하여 자신이 이것을 또는 저것을 하겠다고 하며, 그것을 하나님께 맹세할 수 있겠는가? 모든 맹세는 하나님을 모독하는 것이다, 왜냐하면 만일 그가 하나님의 뜻에 대치되는 맹세를 하여 강제로 행하게 되면 그는 하나님의 뜻에 반대하여 행동할 것을 약속한 것을 보여 주는 것이다. 하지만 사람들이 여러분에게 무엇인가를 하도록 부탁한다면, 그것이 옳으면 ‘예’라고 하고, 그것이 그르면 ‘아니오’라고 하라; 그것에 더해진 것은 무엇이던지 악이다.

So the third commandment is: Never swear anything for anyone. Say Yes when it is yes, No when it is no, and understand that every oath is evil.

그래서 셋째 계명은: 결코 누구에게나 아무것도 맹세하지 말라. 옳으면 ‘예’라고 하고 아니면 ‘아니오’라고 말하라, 그리고 모든 맹세는 악임을 이해하라.

In the former law it was said that if a man killed another he must give a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, an arm for an arm, an ox for an ox, a slave for a slave, and much else.

옛날 율법에는 이렇게 기록되었다: ‘어떤 사람이 다른 사람을 죽이면, 목숨에는 목숨, 눈에는 눈, 이에는 이, 팔에는 팔, 소에는 소, 노예는 노예로 갚으라.’

But I say to you: Do not fight evil by evil, and not only do not exact at law an ox for an ox, a slave for a slave, a life for a life, but do not resist evil at all. If anyone wishes to take an ox from you, give him another; if he wants to take your coat by law, give him your shirt as well; if anyone knocks out a tooth on one side, turn the other side to him. If he would make you do one piece of work for him, do two. If men wish to take your property, let them have it. If they owe you money and do not return it, do not demand it.

그러나 나는 여러분에게 말한다: 악을 악으로 대적치 말라, 그리고 율법에 따라서 소에는 소, 노예는 노예, 목숨에는 목숨으로 요구해서는 아니 될 뿐만 아니라, 도무지 악에 저항하지 말아야 한다. 누가 당신에게서 소를 빼앗아 가려고 하거든, 다른 소도 주라, 그가 법으로서 당신의 옷을 빼앗고자 한다면, 당신의 웃옷마저 주라; 누가 한쪽 이를 뽑으면 다른 쪽 이도 그에게 돌려 대라. 그가 당신에게 한 단위의 일을 시키려고 한다면, 두 단위를 하라. 사람들이 당신의 재산을 빼앗으려 하거든, 그 들에게 그것을 가지라고 하라. 그들이 당신의 돈을 빌리고서 갚지 않으면, 그것을 요구하지 말라.

And therefore: Do not judge or go to law, do not punish, and you yourself will not be judged or punished. Forgive everyone and you will be forgiven; but if you judge others they will judge you also.

그리고 그러므로: 심판하거나 고소하지 말라, 처벌하지 말라, 그러면 당신 자신도 재판 받거나 처벌 받지 않을 것이다. 모든 사람을 용서하라 그러면 당신도 용서 받을 것이다; 그러나 당신이 다른 사람을 심판하면 그들도 당신을 심판할 것이다.

You cannot judge, for men are all blind and do not see the truth. How can you see a speck in your brother's eye when there is dust in your own? You must first get your own eye clear-but whose eyes are perfectly clear? Can a blind man lead the blind? They will both fall into the pit. And those who judge and punish are like blind men leading the blind.

당신은 심판할 수 없다, 왜냐하면 모든 사람들은 깨달음이 없으며, 진리를 보지 못하기 때문이다. 어찌하여 당신의 눈에 먼지가 있음에도 당신의 형제의 눈의 점을 볼 수 있겠는가? 당신은 먼저 당신 자신의 눈을 깨끗이 하여야 한다-하지만 어떤 사람의 눈이 결함 없이 깨끗한가? 눈먼 사람이 눈먼 사람을 인도할 수 있는가? 그들 둘 다 구덩이에 빠질 것이다. 그리고 심판하며 처벌하는 사람들은 눈먼 사람들을 인도하는 눈 먼 사람들과 같다.

Those who judge, and condemn others to violent treatment, wounds, mutilation, or death, wish to correct them, but what can come of their teaching except that the pupils will learn to become just like their teacher? What then will they do when they have learnt the lesson? Only what their teacher does: violence and murder.

다른 사람들을 심판하고 폭력적인 처벌, 상처, 절단, 또는 사형을 선고하는 사람들은 그들을 교화 시키고자 한다, 그러나 그들의 제자가 그들의 교사들과 똑같이 됨을 배우는 것 외에 그들의 가르침으로서 무엇이 나올 수 있겠는가? 그렇다면 그들이 그런 가르침을 배웠을 때 무엇을 하겠는가? 오직 그들의 교사가 한 일을 할 것이다: 폭력과 살인이다.

And do not expect to find justice in the courts. To entrust one's love of justice to men's courts is like throwing precious pearls to swine: they will trample on them and will tear you to pieces.

그리고 법정에서 정의를 찾기를 기대하지 말라. 자신의 정의에 대한 사랑을 사람들의 법정에 맡기는 것은 귀중한 진주를 돼지에게 맡기는 것과 같다: 그들은 그것들을 짓밟아 버리고 당신을 조각 내어 버릴 것이다.

And therefore the fourth commandment is: However men may wrong you, do not return evil, do not judge or go to law, do not sue, and do not punish.

In the former law it was said: Do good to men of your own nation and do harm to foreigners.

옛날 율법에는 이렇게 기록되어 있다: ‘너희 나라의 사람들에게 유익하게 하고 이방인들에게 해롭게 하라.’

But I tell you: Love not only your own countrymen, but people of other nations also. Let others hate you, attack you, and wrong you, but speak well of them and do good to them. If you are attached only to your own countrymen, remember that all men are attached to their own countrymen, and wars result from that. But behave equally well to men of all nations, and you will be sons of the Father. All men are His children, so they are all brothers to you.

그러나 나는 여러분에게 말한다: 당신 자신의 동포를 사랑할 뿐만 아니라 다른 나라의 사람들도 사랑하라. 다른 나라 사람들이 당신들은 미워하고, 공격하며, 잘 못하더라도, 그들을 칭찬하며 그들에게 선을 행하라. 만일 당신들이 오직 당신의 동포에게만 애착을 가지면, 기억하라 모든 사람들은 그들 자신의 동포에게 애착을 가질 것이며 그리고 그로 인해서 전쟁이 일어 날 것이다. 그러나 모든 나라의 사람들에게 꼭 같이 친절하게 행동하라, 그리하면 여러분은 아버지의 아들들이 될 것이다. 모든 사람들은 아버지의 자녀들이다, 그래서 그들은 모두 당신의 형제들이다.

And so this is the fifth commandment: Treat foreigners as I have told you to treat one another. To the Father of all men there are no separate nations or separate kingdoms: all are brothers, all sons of one Father. Make no distinctions among people as to nations and kingdoms.

그리고 그래서 이것이 다섯째 계명이다: 내가 여러분이 서로를 대하듯이 대하라. 모든 사람들의 아버지에게는 나누어진 민족들이나 나누어진 나라들이 없다: 모든 사람들은 형제들이며, 모두 한 아버지의 아들들이다. 민족들이나 나라들로서 사람들 사이에 구별을 짓지 말라.

And so:

1. Do not be angry, but live at peace with all men. 2. Do not indulge yourself in sexual gratification. 3. Do not promise anything on oath to anyone. 4. Do not resist evil, do not judge and do not go to law. 5. Make no distinction of nationality, but love foreigners as your own people.

1. 화를 내지 말라, 그러나 모든 사람들과 평화롭게 살아라. 2. 성적인 만족에 집착하지 말라.  3. 누구에게 맹세로서 무엇이든 약속하지 말라. 4. 악에 저항하지 말라, 심판하지 말고 고소하지 말라. 5. 국가의 구분을 하지 말 것이며, 외국인을 당신 자신의 동포처럼 사랑하라.

All these commandments are contained in one:

이 모든 계명들은 하나로 담아졌으니:

All that you wish men to do to you, do you to them.

다른 사람들이 당신에게 해주기를 바라는 모든 것은, 당신도 그들에게 해주어야 한다.

Do not fulfill these commandments for praise from men. If you do it for men, then from men you have your reward. But if you do it not for men, your reward is from your heavenly Father. So if you do good to others do not boast about it before men. That is what the hypocrites do, to obtain praise. And they get what they seek. But if you do good to men, do it so that no one sees it, and that your left hand should not know what your right hand does. And your Father will see it and will give you what you need.

이 들 계명을 사람들로부터 칭찬을 받고자 이행하지 말라, 그러면 당신은 사람들에게서 당신의 보상을 받을 것이다. 하지만 당신이 그것을 사람들을 위해서 행함이 아니라면, 당신의 보상은 당신의 아버지로부터 받을 것이다. 그러므로 당신이 다른 사람들에게 선을 행하면 사람들 앞에서 뽐내지 말라. 그것은 바로 위선자들이 하는 것이다, 칭찬을 듣기 위해서. 그리고 그들은 그들이 바라는 것을 얻는다. 그러나 여러분은 사람들에게 착한 일을 하려거든 아무도 그것을 보지 못하게 하라, 그리고 당신의 왼손도 당신의 오른 손이 하는 일을 모르게 하여야 한다. 그러면 당신의 아버지가 그것을 볼 것이다 그리고 당신에게 당신이 필요한 것을 주실 것이다.

And if you wish to pray, do not do it as the hypocrites do. They love to pray in the churches and in the sight of men. They do it for men's praise, and from men receive what they aim at.

그리고 당신이 기도하고 싶다면, 위선자들이 하는 것처럼 하지 말라. 그들은 교회에서 기도하기를 좋아하며 사람들이 보는 앞에서 기도하기를 좋아한다. 그들은 사람들의 칭찬을 듣기 위하여 한다 그리고 사람들에게서 그들이 바라는 것을 얻는다.

But if you wish to pray, go where no one will see you, and pray to the Father of your spirit, and He will see what is in your soul and will give you what your soul desires.

그러나 당신이 기도하고 싶다면, 아무도 당신을 보지 못하는 곳으로 가라, 그리고 당신의 영신 아버지께 기도하라, 그러면 그가 당신의 마음에 있는 것을 보시고 당신의 마음이 원하는 것을 주실 것이다.

When you pray, do not wag your tongue as the hypocrites do. Your Father knows what you need before you open your lips.

당신은 기도할 때에, 위선자들이 하는 것처럼 지절지절 지껄이지 말라. 당신의 아버지는 당신이 당신의 입술을 열기 전에 당신이 필요한 것을 알고 있다.

Pray only thus:

오직 이렇게 기도하라:

Our Father, without beginning and without end, like the heavens! May Thy being alone be holy. May power be Thine alone, so that Thy will may be done, without beginning and without end, on earth. Give me the food of life this present day. Efface my former mistakes and wipe them out, as I efface and wipe out all the mistakes my brothers have made; that I may not fall into temptation, but be saved from evil. For the power and strength are Thine, and the decision is Thine.

하늘처럼 시작도 없으며 끝이 없으신 우리 아버지시여! 당신의 존재만이 오직 성스럽사옵니다. 권세는 오직 당신만의 것이옵고, 그리하여 당신의 뜻이 시작도 없으며 끝이 없도록 이 땅에서 이루어 지이다. 이 현재의 시대 삶의 양식을 주옵소서. 저희가 저의 형제들이 저지른 모든 잘못을 씻어주고 닦아 주는 것처럼, 저의 옛 과오를 씻어서 닦아 주시옵소서; 그리하여 저를 시험에 빠지지 않게 하여 주시고, 다만 악으로부터 구하옵소서. 능력과 힘이 당신의 것이오며, 결정이 당신의 것입니다.

If you pray, free yourself above all from malice against anyone. For if you do not forgive others their faults, your Father will not forgive you yours.

당신이 기도한다면, 무엇보다 먼저 자신에게서 다른 사람에 대한 악한 감정을 덜어 내야 한다. 왜냐하면 당신이 다른 사람들에 대하여 그들의 잘못을 용서하지 않는다면, 당신의 아버지도 당신의 잘못을 용서 하지 않을 것이기 때문이다.

If you fast, do so without any parade of it before others. The hypocrites fast that people should see it and praise them-and people do praise them, so they get what they wanted. But you should not do so; if you suffer want, go about with a cheerful face that men may not see, but that your Father may see and give you what you need.

당신이 금식한다면, 다른 사람들 앞에서 자랑하지 않고 해야 한다. 위선자들은 사람들이 그것을 보고 그들을 칭찬하도록 금식한다-그리고 사람들이 그들을 칭찬할 것이며, 그들은 그들이 원하는 것을 받게 된다. 하지만 당신은 그렇게 하면 안 된다; 당신이 궁핍을 겪으면, 사람들이 알지 못하도록 밝은 얼굴로 나아가라, 그러나 당신의 아버지가 보고 당신에게 필요한 것을 줄 것이다.

Do not lay up store for yourself on earth. On earth maggots consume, and rust eats, and thieves steal: but lay up for yourselves heavenly riches. Heavenly riches are not consumed by maggots, nor eaten away by rust, nor do thieves steal them. Where your riches are, there will your heart be also.

The light of the body is the eye, and the light of the soul is the heart. If your eye is dim your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light of your heart is dim your whole soul will be in darkness. You cannot serve two masters at the same time. If you please the one you will offend the other. You cannot serve both God and the flesh. Either you will work for the earthly life or for God. Therefore do not be anxious about what you will eat or drink, or how you will be dressed. For the life is more wonderful than food and clothing and God has given you this.

Look on God's creatures, the birds. They do not sow or reap or gather in the harvest, yet God feeds them. In God's sight man is not less than a bird. If God gave man life, He will be able to feed him too. And you yourselves know that you can do nothing of yourselves, however you may strive. You cannot lengthen your life by an hour. And why do you trouble about clothing? The flowers of the field do no work and do not spin, but they are adorned as Solomon in all his luxury never was.

And if God has so adorned the grass which grows to-day, and to-morrow is cut down, will He not clothe you?

Do not be afraid and do not worry; do not say that you must think of what you will eat and how you will be clothed. All men need these things and God knows that you need them. So do not trouble about the future. Live in the present day. Take care to be in the Father's will. Desire that which alone is important, and the rest will come of itself. Seek only to be in the will of the Father, and do not trouble about the future, for when it comes its trouble will come too. There is enough evil in the present.

Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock and it will be opened to you. Where is there a father who would give his son a stone instead of bread, or a snake instead of a fish? Then why do you think if we wicked men can give our children what they need, that your Father in heaven will not give you what you truly need, if you ask Him? Ask, and the heavenly Father will give the spirit of life to them that ask Him.

Narrow is the path to life, but enter by that narrow way. There is only one entry to life-a strait and narrow one. Great and wide is the field around, but it leads to destruction. The narrow way alone leads to life, and few find it. But do not be afraid, little flock! The Father has prepared the Kingdom for you.

Only, beware of false prophets and teachers; they come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. By their fruits-by what comes from them-you will know them. From the burdock you do not gather grapes, nor apples from an aspen. A good tree bears good fruit and a bad tree bad fruit. So you will know these men by the fruits of their teaching.

A good man out of his good heart brings forth all that is good. But an evil man out of his evil heart brings forth all that is evil. For from the overflow of the heart the lips speak. And therefore if teachers tell you to do to others what would be bad for yourselves, if they teach violence, executions, and wars-then you may know that they are false teachers.

선한 사람의 선한 마음에서 선한 모든 것을 내어 놓는다. 하지만 악한 사람의 악한 마음에서 악한 모든 것을 내어 놓는다. 왜냐하면 마음이 넘침으로써 입술이 말하기 때문이다. 그리고 그러므로 만일 교사가 자기자신에게 나쁜 것을 당신이 다른 사람들에게 하라고 시킨다면, 그들이 폭력과 처형과 전쟁을 가르친다면-그렇다면 당신은 그들이 거짓 교사들임을 알 것이다.

For it is not those who say: 'Lord, Lord!' who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but those who fulfill the will of the heavenly Father. The false teachers will say: 'Lord, Lord! We taught your doctrine, and by your teaching drove out evil. But I will disown them and say: 'No, I never recognized you and do not recognize you now, Go away from me; you do what is unlawful.'

왜냐하면 천국에 들어가는 사람들은 ‘주여, 주여!’라고 하는 사람들이 아니라, 천국의 아버지의 뜻을 행하는 사람들이다. 거짓 교사들은 ‘주여, 주여! 우리가 당신의 교리를 가르쳤나이다, 그리고 당신의 가르침으로 악을 몰아 내었나이다’ 하고 말할 것이다. 그러나 나는 그들은 모른다고 할 것이며, ‘아니다, 나는 너희들을 안 적이 없다 그리고 지금도 너희를 알지 못한다, 나에게서 물러 가라; 너희는 부당한 일을 하고 있다.’

He who hears these words of mine and acts on them is like a reasonable man who builds his house on a rock. And his house will stand against all storms. But he who hears these words of mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who builds his house on the sand. When a storm comes his house will fall and all in it will perish.

And the people were all astonished at this teaching, for the teaching of Jesus was quite different from that of the Orthodox professors of the law. They taught a law that had to be obeyed, but Jesus taught that all men are free. And in Jesus Christ were fulfilled the prophecies of Isaiah: that a people living in darkness, in the shadow of death, saw the light of life. That he who brought this light of truth did no violence or harm to men, but was meek and gentle. To bring truth into the world he neither disputes nor shouts, nor is his voice raised, and he will not break a straw or put out the smallest light, and all the hope of men is in his teaching.
