| Lamentations of Jeremiah, The,
also called THE LAMENTATIONS OF JEREMIAS, Old Testament book belonging to the
third section of the biblical canon, known as the Ketuvim, or Writings. In the
Hebrew Bible, Lamentations stands with Ruth, the Song of Solomon, Ecclesiastes,
and Esther and with them makes up the Megillot, five scrolls that are read on
various festivals of the Jewish religious year. In the Jewish liturgical
calendar, Lamentations is the festal scroll of the Ninth of Av, a day
commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem. |
예레미야의 애가(哀歌), 또한 THE LAMENTATIONS OF
JEREMIAS로 불리며, [구약성서] 제3부인 케투빔(성문서)에 속하는 책이다.
히브리어 성서에서 이 책은 [룻기]·[아가]·[전도서]·[에스델]과
나란히 실려 있으며, 그 책들과 함께 메길라(유대교
종교력의 여러 절기에 낭독하는 5개의 두루마리)를
구성한다. 유태인들의 예배 달력에는, 애가는 제1·2예루살렘 성전 파괴를 기억하는

Most of the Christian English translations of
the Bible, following the lead of the later Greek versions and the Latin
versions, call the book The Lamentations of Jeremiah, though its title in the
Talmud and the Septuagint is simply Lamentations. The content and style,
however, argue against Jeremiah's authorship. Each of the first four chapters
consists of an acrostic poem. Although the 5th chapter consists of 22 verses, it
is not, strictly speaking, an alphabetic acrostic. The poems are independent
units, but their mood and content provide a unity to the book as a whole.
Because the poems are laments over the destruction of Judah, Jerusalem, and the
Temple by the Babylonians in 586 BC, they must be dated during the exile that
followed.

[탈무드]와 [70인역성서 Septuagint]에는 이 책
제목이 단순히 '애가'로만 되어 있지만, 대부분의
그리스도교 영어 번역성서는 후대의 그리스어·라틴어
번역 성서의 선례에 따라 이 책을 예레미야 애가라고
부른다. 그러나 책의 내용과 문체로 볼 때 예레미야를
저자로 보기 어렵다. 처음 4장은 아크로스틱 형식의 시로
이루어져 있다. 5장은 22절로 구성되어 있긴 하지만,
엄격히 말해서 알파벳 순서에 따른 아크로스틱은 아니다.
이 시들은 각각 독립된 단위들이지만, 분위기와
내용으로는 통일된 1권의 책을 이룬다. 이 시들은 BC 586년
바빌로니아 사람들에게 유다·예루살렘, 성전이 파괴당한
일을 슬퍼하는 애가들이기 때문에 저작 시기는 당연히 그
사건들이 일어난 뒤인 바빌론 유수[幽囚기로 보아야 한다.
