Letter of Paul to the Colossians

Introduction

The Colossians were apparently adopting views and practices that were incompatible with "the knowledge of God's mystery, of Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (2:2-3). Though there are references to such things as philosophy and empty deceit (2:8), Jewish-like practices (2:16), visions (2:18), and "rigour of devotion and self-abasement and severity to the body" (2:23), the source of these teachings is not quite clear. The author strives to curb such tendencies by recalling the preeminence of Christ in everything (1:18), because he is "the image of the invisible God" (1:15), who reconciled man to God "by the blood of his cross" (1:20). Paul then exhorts the Christian community to put away anger, malice, and foul talk and to show kindness, meekness, patience, forgiveness, and love in imitation of Christ. Every Christian, according to his state in life, should fulfill his duties.

골로새인들은 "그 속에 지혜와 지식의 온갖 보화가 감추어져 있는 하느님의 심오한 진리인 그리스도에 대한 깨달음"(2：2~3)과 조화되지 않는 견해와 관습을 받아들이고 있었음이 분명하다. 철학과 공허한 속임수(2：8), 유대적인 관습들(2：16), 환상들(2：18) 그리고 "지나치게 엄격한 헌신과 과장된 겸손과 부질없는 금욕주의"(2：23)에 대한 언급이 서신에 나오기는 하지만 이 가르침이 어디에서 유래된 것인지는 분명하게 나타나 있지 않다. 이 편지에서 저자는 그리스도가 "보이지 않는 하느님의 형상"이며(1：15) "십자가에 흘린 그분의 피로"(1：20) 인간을 하느님과 화해시킨 분이기 때문에 그분이 만물의 으뜸이 된다는 사실(1：18)을 상기시키고 잘못된 풍조들을 막고자 한다. 그런 다음 골로새 교인들에게 분노·격분·비방을 버리고, 그리스도를 본받아 친절·온유·인내·용서·사랑을 가지며, 그리스도인은 자신이 처한 형편에 따라 이 본분을 다해야 한다고 권면하고 있다.
