[1] O death, how bitter is the reminder of you
to one who lives at peace among his possessions,
to a man without distractions, who is prosperous in
everything,
and who still has the vigor to enjoy his food!
[2] O death, how welcome is your sentence
to one who is in need and is failing in strength,
very old and distracted over everything;
to one who is contrary, and has lost his patience!
[3] Do not fear the sentence of death;
remember your former days and the end of life;
this is the decree from the Lord for all flesh,
[4] and how can you reject the good pleasure of the
Most High?
Whether life is for ten or a hundred or a thousand years,
there is no inquiry about it in Hades.
[5] The children of sinners are abominable
children,
and they frequent the haunts of the ungodly.
[6] The inheritance of the children of sinners will
perish,
and on their posterity will be a perpetual reproach.
[7] Children will blame an ungodly father,
for they suffer reproach because of him.
[8] Woe to you, ungodly men,
who have forsaken the law of the Most High God!
[9] When you are born, you are born to a curse;
and when you die, a curse is your lot.
[10] Whatever is from the dust returns to dust;
so the ungodly go from curse to destruction.
[11] The mourning of men is about their bodies,
but the evil name of sinners will be blotted out.
[12] Have regard for your name, since it will
remain for
you longer than a thousand great stores of gold.
[13] The days of a good life are numbered,
but a good name endures for ever.
[14] My children, observe instruction and be at
peace;
hidden wisdom and unseen treasure,
what advantage is there in either of them?
[15] Better is the man who hides his folly
than the man who hides his wisdom.
[16] Therefore show respect for my words:
For it is good to retain every kind of shame,
and not everything is confidently esteemed by every one.
[17] Be ashamed of immorality, before your father
or mother;
and of a lie, before a prince or a ruler;
[18] of a transgression, before a judge or
magistrate;
and of iniquity, before a congregation or the people;
of unjust dealing, before your partner or friend;
[19] and of theft, in the place where you live.
Be ashamed before the truth of God and his covenant.
Be ashamed of selfish behavior at meals,
of surliness in receiving and giving,
[20] and of silence, before those who greet you;
of looking at a woman who is a harlot,
[21] and of rejecting the appeal of a kinsman;
of taking away some one's portion or gift,
and of gazing at another man's wife;
[22] of meddling with his maidservant --
and do not approach her bed;
of abusive words, before friends --
and do not upbraid after making a gift;
[23] of repeating and telling what you hear,
and of revealing secrets.
Then you will show proper shame,
and will find favor with every man.

[1]재산을 쌓아 놓고 행복하게 살며
아무런 근심 걱정없이 모든 일에 성공하고
아직도 음식을 즐길 수 있는 사람에게,
죽음아,
너를 생각한다는 것이 얼마나
괴로운 일이겠느냐!
[2]가난하고 힘이 빠진 사람,
끊임없이 근심 걱정에 시달려서 늙어
버리고 모든 것이 귀찮고 참을성마저
없어진 사람에게,
죽음아,
너의 기약이
얼마나 반가운 일이겠느냐!
[3]죽음이 있다는 것을 두려워하지
말아라.
네 앞에 간 사람들과 네 뒤에 올
사람들이 있음을 생각하여라.
[4]죽음은 모든 사람에게 내리신
주님의 선고다.
지극히 높으신 분의 뜻을
어찌 거역하려느냐.
십년을 살든지 백년을
살든지 천년을 살든지,
저승에서는 네
수명의 장단이 문제가 되지 않는다.
[5]죄인들의 자식으로 태어나서,
악인들의 소굴을 드나드는 자들은
가증스럽다.
[6]죄인들의 자식들이 물려받을
유산은 없고 그들의 후손들은 내내 비난을
받을 것이다.
[7]악한 아비를 가진 자식들은 제
아비 때문에 굴욕을 당하고 그러므로 그
아비를 못내 원망한다.
[8]하느님의 율법을 버린 악한 자들아,
너희들은 저주를 받을 것이다.
[9]너희는 태어났을 때 저주받기
위하여 태어났고,
죽으면 죽어서도 저주를
받을 것이다.
[10]흙에서 온 것이 모두 흙으로 돌아
가듯이 악인들은 저주로부터 와서 파멸로
돌아 간다.
[11]사람들은 죄인이 죽어도 그
시체를 놓고 슬퍼하지만 그의 이름은 곧
스러지고 만다.
[12]그러니,
너의 명성을 생각하여라.
그것은 천근의 황금보다도 더 오래 남는다.
[13]아무리 행복한 사람이라도 그
생활에는 한정이 있지만 명예는 영원히
남는다.
[14]들어라,
내 가르침을 지켜서
평화롭게 살아라.
가리워진 지혜와 보이지
않는 보물,
이것들을 어떻게 쓸 수
있겠느냐?
[15]자기의 어리석음을 감추는 사람이
자기의 지혜를 감추는 사람보다 더
슬기롭다.
[16]수치심이라고 다 좋은 것이
아니고 모든 것이 모든 사람에게 진실대로
받아 들여지는 것은 아니다.
그러니,
내가
다음에 하는 말을 명심하여 수치심을
가려내 가져라.
[17]부모 앞에서는 음란한 행동을,
군주나 권력자 앞에서는 거짓말하는 것에
대하여 수치심을 가져라.
[18]재판관이나 법관 앞에서는
범죄행위에 대하여 집회와 민중 앞에서는
율법을 어긴 것에 대하여 수치심을 가져라.
[19]친구나 동료 앞에서는 의리에
어긋난 것을,
동네 사람들 앞에서는
도둑질한 것에 대하여 수치심을 가져라.
[20]하느님의 진리와 그분의 계약을
어겼을 때 수치심을 가지고 식탁에서
무례한 짓을 하였을 때,
[21]비열한 선물을 주고 받고 할 대,
남의 인사에 답하지 않았을 때,
[22]창녀에게 눈길을 돌렸을 때,
친척을 외면했을 때,
[23]남에게 갈 몫이나 선물을
가로챘을 때,
남의 아내에게 눈짓을 할 때,
[24]남의 여종을 데리고 놀았을 때에
수치심을 가져라.
여종 침대 곁에는
가지도 말아라.
[25]네 친구에게 욕설을 했을 때에
수치심을 가져라.
친구에게 무엇을 주고
나서 모욕해서는 안된다.
[26]네가 들은 말을 남에게 옮기며
다를 떨었을 때와 비밀을 누설했을 때
수치심을 가져라.
[27]그러면 너는 참다운 수치심을
알게 될 것이고 남들의 호감을 사게 될
것이다.

Sir.42
[1] Of the following things do not be ashamed,
and do not let partiality lead you to sin:
[2] of the law of the Most High and his covenant,
and of rendering judgment to acquit the ungodly;
[3] of keeping accounts with a partner or with
traveling companions,
and of dividing the inheritance of friends;
[4] of accuracy with scales and weights,
and of acquiring much or little;
[5] of profit from dealing with merchants,
and of much discipline of children,
and of whipping a wicked servant severely.
[6] Where there is an evil wife, a seal is a good
thing;
and where there are many hands, lock things up.
[7] Whatever you deal out, let it be by number and
weight,
and make a record of all that you give out or take in.
[8] Do not be ashamed to instruct the stupid or
foolish
or the aged man who quarrels with the young.
Then you will be truly instructed,
and will be approved before all men.
[9] A daughter keeps her father secretly wakeful,
and worry over her robs him of sleep;
when she is young, lest she do not marry,
or if married, lest she be hated;
[10] while a virgin, lest she be defiled
or become pregnant in her father's house;
or having a husband, lest she prove unfaithful,
or, though married, lest she be barren.
[11] Keep strict watch over a headstrong daughter,
lest she make you a laughingstock to your enemies,
a byword in the city and notorious among the people,
and put you to shame before the great multitude.
[12] Do not look upon any one for beauty,
and do not sit in the midst of women;
[13] for from garments comes the moth,
and from a woman comes woman's wickedness.
[14] Better is the wickedness of a man than a woman
who does good;
and it is a woman who brings shame and disgrace.
[15] I will now call to mind the works of the Lord,
and will declare what I have seen.
By the words of the Lord his works are done.
[16] The sun looks down on everything with its
light,
and the work of the Lord is full of his glory.
[17] The Lord has not enabled his holy ones
to recount all his marvelous works,
which the Lord the Almighty has established
that the universe may stand firm in his glory.
[18] He searches out the abyss, and the hearts of
men,
and considers their crafty devices.
For the Most High knows all that may be known,
and he looks into the signs of the age.
[19] He declares what has been and what is to be,
and he reveals the tracks of hidden things.
[20] No thought escapes him,
and not one word is hidden from him.
[21] He has ordained the splendors of his wisdom,
and he is from everlasting and to everlasting.
Nothing can be added or taken away,
and he needs no one to be his counselor.
[22] How greatly to be desired are all his works,
and how sparkling they are to see!
[23] All these things live and remain for ever
for every need, and are all obedient.
[24] All things are twofold, one opposite the
other,
and he has made nothing incomplete.
[25] One confirms the good things of the other,
and who can have enough of beholding his glory?

[1]그러나,
체면 때문에 죄를 짓는
일은 없도록 하여라.
남 앞에 부끄러워할
필요가 없는 일들이 있다.
즉,
[2]지극히 높으신 분의 율법과 계약을
지키는 것과 악인을 공정하게 재판하는 일,
[3]이웃이나 길벗과 셈을 분명하게
하는 것과,
다른 상속자들과 유산을
나누는 일,
[4]저울눈을 정확하게 따지는 것과
이익의 공정한 분배를 따지는 일,
[5]장사를 해서 이득을 얻는 것과
자식들을 엄격히 다스리는 것,
그리고
악한 노예를 매질하여 다스리는 일 등이
그것이다.
[6]악처에게는 재갈을 물리는 것이
좋고 내미는 손이 많을 대에는 네 창고의
문을 잠가라.
[7]물건을 내줄 때에는 수량을 엄격히
셈하고 주고 받을 때에는 일일이 증서를
남겨라.
[8]지각없는 자와 미련한 자를
타이르고 젊은이와 다투는 주착없는
늙은이를 깨우쳐 주는 것을 부끄러워하지
말아라.
그러면,
모든 사람이 너를
지혜로운 사람으로 인정하고 너를 찬송할
것이다.
[9]딸은 아비에게 남모르는
근심거리여서 딸 걱정에 잠 못 이루는
적도 많다.
딸이 젊은 때는 시집을 못 갈까
걱정이고 시집을 가면,
소박을 맞을까
걱정,
[10]처녀때에는 혹시 유혹에 빠질까
걱정,
출가 전에 아기를 가질까 걱정,
출
가 후에는 빗나갈까 걱정,
시집가서도
자식을 못 낳을까 근심한다.
[11]네 딸이 말괄량이거든 철저히
감시하여라.
그래서 딸 때문에 원수들의
웃음거리가 되지 않도록 하여라.
그렇지
않으면 동네의 화제거리가 되어 남의 입에
오르내리고 마침내는 대중 앞에서 망신을
당하게 된다.
[12]그 누구든 아름다운 용모에
흘리지 말고 함부로 여자들과 동석하지
말아라.
[13]옷에서 좀이 나듯이 여자에게서는
여자의 심술이 나온다.
[14]여자의 친절보다는 차라리 남자의
심술이 낫다.
여자는 치욕과 비난을
자아낼 뿐이다.
[15]이제 나는 너에게 주님의 업적을
일깨워 주고 내가 본 바를 말하겠다.
주님은 당신 말씀으로 그 업적을 이루셨고
피조물은 그 뜻에 따른다.
[16]만물이 찬란한 태양빛을 받고
있듯이 주님의 업적은 영광으로 가득 차
있다.
[17]그러나 성인들도 그 오묘함을
헤아려 말할 능력을 받지 못하였다.
전능하신 주님께서는 당신의 신기한
일들을 빈틈없이 배포하셔서온 세상을
당신의 영광 위에 굳게 서게 하셨다.
[18]주님은 연못이나 사람 마음의
깊이를 헤아리시며,
그 어떤 숨은 계획도
꿰뚫어 보신다.
왜냐하면,
지극히 높으신
분은 세상의 모든 지식을 다 가지시고
시대의 징조를 다 알고 계시기 때문이다.
[19]주님은 과거를 밝혀 주시고
미래를 알려 주시며 숨겨진 일들을 드러내
보이신다.
[20]그러므로,
주님은 사람의 모든
생각을 다 아시니,
단 한 마디도 그 분을
속일 수 없다.
[21]주님은 당신 지혜의 놀라운
업적들을 질서 있게 배치하셨다.
그분은
영원에서 영원까지 계시며 그분에게는
아무 더할 것도 뺄 것도 없고 그분에게는
아무 조언도 필요하지 않다.
[22]주님의 모든 업적은 사람에게
얼마나 바람직한 것이며 사람 눈에 얼마나
찬란한가.
[23]이 모든 것은 영원히 살아 남고
그분이 필요할 대는 그 모두가 복종한다.
[24]주님이 만드신 것으로 흠 있는
것은 하나도 없다.
모든 것은 서로 짝지어
마주 있으며
[25]서로 도와서 훌륭하게 된다.
과연,
주님의 영광을 보고 권태를 느낄 자
누구인가.

Sir.43
[1] The pride of the heavenly heights is the clear
firmament,
the appearance of heaven in a spectacle of glory.
[2] The sun, when it appears, making proclamation
as it goes forth,
is a marvelous instrument, the work of the Most High.
[3] At noon it parches the land;
and who can withstand its burning heat?
[4] A man tending a furnace works in burning heat,
but the sun burns the mountains three times as much;
it breathes out fiery vapors,
and with bright beams it blinds the eyes.
[5] Great is the Lord who made it;
and at his command it hastens on its course.
[6] He made the moon also, to serve in its season
to mark the times and to be an everlasting sign.
[7] From the moon comes the sign for feast days,
a light that wanes when it has reached the full.
[8] The month is named for the moon,
increasing marvelously in its phases,
an instrument of the hosts on high
shining forth in the firmament of heaven.
[9] The glory of the stars is the beauty of heaven,
a gleaming array in the heights of the Lord.
[10] At the command of the Holy One they stand as
ordered,
they never relax in their watches.
[11] Look upon the rainbow, and praise him who made
it,
exceedingly beautiful in its brightness.
[12] It encircles the heaven with its glorious arc;
the hands of the Most High have stretched it out.
[13] By his command he sends the driving snow
and speeds the lightnings of his judgment.
[14] Therefore the storehouses are opened,
and the clouds fly forth like birds.
[15] In his majesty he amasses the clouds,
and the hailstones are broken in pieces.
[16] At his appearing the mountains are shaken;
at his will the south wind blows.
[17] The voice of his thunder rebukes the earth;
so do the tempest from the north and the whirlwind.
He scatters the snow like birds flying down,
and its descent is like locusts alighting.
[18] The eye marvels at the beauty of its
whiteness,
and the mind is amazed at its falling.
[19] He pours the hoarfrost upon the earth like
salt,
and when it freezes, it becomes pointed thorns.
[20] The cold north wind blows,
and ice freezes over the water;
it rests upon every pool of water,
and the water puts it on like a breastplate.
[21] He consumes the mountains and burns up the
wilderness,
and withers the tender grass like fire.
[22] A mist quickly heals all things;
when the dew appears, it refreshes from the heat.
[23] By his counsel he stilled the great deep
and planted islands in it.
[24] Those who sail the sea tell of its dangers,
and we marvel at what we hear.
[25] for in it are strange and marvelous works,
all kinds of living things, and huge creatures of the sea.
[26] Because of him his messenger finds the way,
and by his word all things hold together.
[27] Though we speak much we cannot reach the end,
and the sum of our words is: "He is the all."
[28] Where shall we find strength to praise him?
For he is greater than all his works.
[29] Terrible is the Lord and very great,
and marvelous is his power.
[30] When you praise the Lord, exalt him as much as
you can;
for he will surpass even that.
When you exalt him, put forth all your strength,
and do not grow weary, for you cannot praise him enough.
[31] Who has seen him and can describe him?
Or who can extol him as he is?
[32] Many things greater than these lie hidden,
for we have seen but few of his works.
[33] For the Lord has made all things,
and to the godly he has granted wisdom.

장
[1]푸른 하늘은 지극히 높은 곳의
자랑이며 하늘의 아름다움은 그분의
영광스러운 모습을 나타내고 있다.
[2]태양은 동쪽에서 떠오를 대,
지극히 높으신 분의 업적의 놀라움을
드러내며
[3]중천에 왔을 때에는 땅을 말린다.
그 뜨거운 열기를 누가 감당하랴?
[4]화부는 뜨거운 열 속에서 일한다.
그러나,
태양은 그 세 배나 되는 뜨거운
열로 산을 태우고 화염을 토하며,
그 강한
빛으로 사람의 눈을 뜨지 못하게 한다.
[5]태양을 만드신 주님은 위대하시며
태양은 그분의 말씀을 따라서 제 궤도를
달린다.
[6]달도 언제나 제 궤도에 충실하다.
달은 세월의 시작이며,
시절을 구분해
주는 영원한 표지이다.
[7]달은 축일을 알려 주고,
한번
찼다가는 다시 기우는 천체이다.
[8]매월의 이름도 여기에서 나왔다.
달은 차 갈 때에 신기하게 커 가며 지극히
높은 곳에서는 천사군의 기수요
하늘에서는 찬란한 빛을 낸다.
[9]별들의 광채는 하늘의
아름다움이며 주님의 높은 곳을 찬란하게
비추는 장식이다.
[10]그것들은 거룩하신 분의 말씀대로
대령하고 주의를 게을리 하여 흐트러지는
법이 없다.
[11]무지개를 보아라!
그리고 그
만드신 분을 찬양하여라.
무지개는 제
차례가 되면 그 아름다운 모습을 대러낸다.
[12]무지개는 하늘을 가로질러
영광스런 원호를 그린다.
그것은 지극히
높으신 분의 손이 당기는 활이다.
[13]지극히 높으신 분의 분부로 눈이
내리고 번갯불이 심판을 알린다.
[14]그분의 명령으로 하늘문이 열려
구름들이 새들처럼 난다.
[15]그분의 큰 힘으로 구름이 엉기고,
돌덩이 같은 우박이 부서져 파편이 된다.
[16]그분 앞에서 산들도 무서워 떨고
그분의 뜻을 따라 남풍이 불어 온다.
[17]그분의 천둥소리는 땅을 뒤흔들고
그분의 뜻을 따라 북풍이 불고
회오리바람이 인다.
[18]그분의 힘으로 눈은 새들이 내려
앉듯,
또 메뚜기가 땅에 내려앉듯 사뿐히
내린다.
사람들은 눈의 아름다움을 보고
놀라며 눈이 내리는 모양을 보고 경탄한다.
[19]주님께서는 이슬을 소금처럼 땅에
내리시고 그것이 얼면 날카로운 가시와
같은 서리가 되게 한다.
[20]찬바람이 북쪽에서 불어 오면
물이 얼어서 얼음이 되고,
모든 물줄기는
걸음을 멈추고,
물살은 얼음의 갑옷을
입는다.
[21]바람은 산을 삼키고 황야를
뒤덮으며 마치 불로 태우듯이 초목을 말려
버린다.
[22]그러나 곧 이 모든 것을 고쳐 주는
약으로 안개가 내리고 더위 다음에는
이슬이 내려 모든 것을 소생시킨다.
[23]주님께서는 당신의 계획으로 깊은
바다를 다스리시고 그 속에 여러 섬들을
만드셨다.
[24]항해하는 사람들의 모험은 그
이야기만 들어도 놀랍기 그지 없다.
[25]바다에는 또 주님의 신기하고
놀라운 업적들이 얼마든지 있으며 온갖
동물들과 큰 바다괴물들이 살고 있다.
[26]주님의 덕분으로 모든 것이 제
길을 찾아 가고 만사는 주님의 말씀으로
고르게 된다.
[27]아무리 많은 말로도 다 이야기할
수 없으니 한마디로, "그분은 전부다"
라고 할 수밖에 없구나.
[28]무슨 힘으로 그분을 다 찬양할 수
있으랴?
그분은 위대하신 분,
그분은
자기가 이룬 모든 업적 위에 계신 분,
[29]너무나 위대하셔서 두려움을
자아내는 주님이시며 놀라운 힘을 가지신
분이시다.
[30]주님을 찬양하여 그분을 높이
받들어라!
아무리 높이 찬양하여도 그분은
더높은 곳에 계신다.
너의 힘을 다하여
주님을 찬미하여라!
아무리 찬미하여도
결코 다하지 못할 것이다.
[31]그분을 뵙고 그분을 정확하게
묘사할 수 있었던 사람이 있느냐!
누가
주님에게 합당한 찬양을 드릴 수 있으랴.
[32]위에 말한 것보다도 더 큰 놀라운
일들이 많다.
우리는 단지 주님의 업적
중에 극소수를 보았을 뿐이다.
[33]이 모든 것을 만드신 분은
주님이시고,
경건한 사람들에게 지혜를
주신 분도 그분이시다.

Sir.44
[1] Let us now praise famous men,
and our fathers in their generations.
[2] The Lord apportioned to them great glory,
his majesty from the beginning.
[3] There were those who ruled in their kingdoms,
and were men renowned for their power,
giving counsel by their understanding,
and proclaiming prophecies;
[4] leaders of the people in their deliberations
and in understanding of learning for the people,
wise in their words of instruction;
[5] those who composed musical tunes,
and set forth verses in writing;
[6] rich men furnished with resources,
living peaceably in their habitations --
[7] all these were honored in their generations,
and were the glory of their times.
[8] There are some of them who have left a name,
so that men declare their praise.
[9] And there are some who have no memorial,
who have perished as though they had not lived;
they have become as though they had not been born,
and so have their children after them.
[10] But these were men of mercy,
whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten;
[11] their prosperity will remain with their
descendants,
and their inheritance to their children's children.
[12] Their descendants stand by the covenants;
their children also, for their sake.
[13] Their posterity will continue for ever,
and their glory will not be blotted out.
[14] Their bodies were buried in peace,
and their name lives to all generations.
[15] Peoples will declare their wisdom,
and the congregation proclaims their praise.
[16] Enoch pleased the Lord, and was taken up;
he was an example of repentance to all generations.
[17] Noah was found perfect and righteous;
in the time of wrath he was taken in exchange;
therefore a remnant was left to the earth
when the flood came.
[18] Everlasting covenants were made with him
that all flesh should not be blotted out by a flood.
[19] Abraham was the great father of a multitude of
nations,
and no one has been found like him in glory;
[20] he kept the law of the Most High,
and was taken into covenant with him;
he established the covenant in his flesh,
and when he was tested he was found faithful.
[21] Therefore the Lord assured him by an oath
that the nations would be blessed through his posterity;
that he would multiply him like the dust of the earth,
and exalt his posterity like the stars,
and cause them to inherit from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
[22] To Isaac also he gave the same assurance
for the sake of Abraham his father.
[23] The blessing of all men and the covenant
he made to rest upon the head of Jacob;
he acknowledged him with his blessings,
and gave him his inheritance;
he determined his portions,
and distributed them among twelve tribes.

장
[1]다음엔 명성 높은 사람들과 우리의
역대 선조들을 칭송하자.
[2]주님게서는 그들을 통해서 큰
영광을 나타내시어 옛날부터 당신의
위대하심을 보여 주셨다.
[3]그들 중에는 왕권을 가지고
훌륭하게 다스려서 유명해진 사람도 있고
슬기로써 현명한 조언자가 된 사람도
있으며 하느님의 말씀을 받아 전하는
예언자도 있었다.
[4]또 어떤 사람들은 결단력으로
백성을 영도하였고 슬기로써 백성을
지도하였으며 지혜로운 말로써 백성을
가르쳤다.
[5]또 아름다운 음악을 만든 사람들이
있었고 노래를 지어 읊은 사람도 있었다.
[6]또 재산이 풍부하여 가정에서
평화롭게 지낸 사람도 있었다.
[7]이런 사람들은 모두 당대에 큰
명성을 얻고 그 시대의 자랑이었다.
[8]어떤 사람들은 후세에 명성을
남겨서 아직도 사람들이 그들을 칭송한다.
[9]그러나 어떤 사람들은 사람들의
기억에 남지 않고 마치 이 세상에 없었던
것처럼 사라지고 말았다.
그들이 이
세상에 살았던 흔적이 없으니 그 뒤를
이은 자손들도 마찬가지다.
[10]그러나,
훌륭한 사람들도
있었으니,
그들의 업적은 잊혀지지 않았다.
[11]그들의 자손들도,
그들이 남긴
훌륭한 업적을 간직하고 있다.
[12]그들의 자손들은 하느님과의
계약을 지키고 있으며 그들을 이어서 그
후손들도 잘 지키고 있다.
[13]그들의 후손은 영원히 존속할
것이며 그들의 영광은 쇠퇴하지 않을
것이다.
[14]그들의 몸은 땅에 묻혀서 평화를
누리고 그들의 이름은 만대에 살아 있다.
[15]만백성은 그들의 지혜를 칭송할
것이며 회중은 그들을 찬양할 것이다.
[16]에녹은 주님을 기쁘게 해 드리고
하늘로 불려 올라 갔다.
그래서 후대를
위하여 회개의 모범이 되었다.
[17]노아는 탓할 바 없는 의인으로
인정되어 주님게서 진노하셨을 때 그
화해자가 되었다.
대홍수 때 노아의
덕분으로 땅 위에 몇 사람이나마 살아
남게 되었다.
[18]주님게서는 홍수로써 인류를
멸망시키지 않겠다는 계약을 노아와
영원히 맺으셨다.
[19]아브라함은 허다한 민족의 위대한
시조이며 아무도 그 영광을 따를 사람은
없다.
[20]그는 지극히 높으신 분의 율법을
지키고 그분과 계약을 맺었다.
자기 살에
그 계약의 표시를 새기었고 시련을 당했을
때에도 그는 충실하였다.
[21]그러므로 맹세로써 그에게
약속하시기를,
그의 후손을 통해서
만백성을 축복하고 땅의 먼지처럼
번성하게 하며 그의 후손을 별과 같이
높여 주고 이 바다에서 저 바다까지,
에집트 강에서 땅 끝까지를 유산으로
주겠다고 하셨다.

[1] From his descendants the Lord brought forth a
man of mercy,
who found favor in the sight of all flesh
and was beloved by God and man,
Moses, whose memory is blessed.
[2] He made him equal in glory to the holy ones,
and made him great in the fears of his enemies.
[3] By his words he caused signs to cease;
the Lord glorified him in the presence of kings.
He gave him commands for his people,
and showed him part of his glory.
[4] He sanctified him through faithfulness and
meekness;
he chose him out of all mankind.
[5] He made him hear his voice,
and led him into the thick darkness,
and gave him the commandments face to face,
the law of life and knowledge,
to teach Jacob the covenant,
and Israel his judgments.
[6] He exalted Aaron, the brother of Moses,
a holy man like him, of the tribe of Levi.
[7] He made an everlasting covenant with him,
and gave him the priesthood of the people.
He blessed him with splendid vestments,
and put a glorious robe upon him.
[8] He clothed him with superb perfection,
and strengthened him with the symbols of authority,
the linen breeches, the long robe, and the ephod.
[9] And he encircled him with pomegranates,
with very many golden bells round about,
to send forth a sound as he walked,
to make their ringing heard in the temple
as a reminder to the sons of his people;
[10] with a holy garment, of gold and blue
and purple, the work of an embroiderer;
with the oracle of judgment, Urim and Thummim;
[11] with twisted scarlet, the work of a craftsman;
with precious stones engraved like signets,
in a setting of gold, the work of a jeweler,
for a reminder, in engraved letters,
according to the number of the tribes of Israel;
[12] with a gold crown upon his turban,
inscribed like a signet with "Holiness,"
a distinction to be prized, the work of an expert,
the delight of the eyes, richly adorned.
[13] Before his time there never were such
beautiful things.
No outsider ever put them on,
but only his sons
and his descendants perpetually.
[14] His sacrifices shall be wholly burned
twice every day continually.
[15] Moses ordained him,
and anointed him with holy oil;
it was an everlasting covenant for him
and for his descendants all the days of heaven,
to minister to the Lord and serve as priest
and bless his people in his name.
[16] He chose him out of all the living
to offer sacrifice to the Lord,
incense and a pleasing odor as a memorial portion,
to make atonement for the people.
[17] In his commandments he gave him
authority and statutes and judgments,
to teach Jacob the testimonies,
and to enlighten Israel with his law.
[18] Outsiders conspired against him,
and envied him in the wilderness,
Dathan and Abiram and their men
and the company of Korah, in wrath and anger.
[19] The Lord saw it and was not pleased,
and in the wrath of his anger they were destroyed;
he wrought wonders against them
to consume them in flaming fire.
[20] He added glory to Aaron
and gave him a heritage;
he allotted to him the first of the first fruits,
he prepared bread of first fruits in abundance;
[21] for they eat the sacrifices to the Lord,
which he gave to him and his descendants.
[22] But in the land of the people he has no
inheritance,
and he has no portion among the people;
for the Lord himself is his portion and inheritance.
[23] Phinehas the son of Eleazar is the third in
glory,
for he was zealous in the fear of the Lord,
and stood fast, when the people turned away,
in the ready goodness of his soul,
and made atonement for Israel.
[24] Therefore a covenant of peace was established
with him,
that he should be leader of the sanctuary and of his
people,
that he and his descendants should have
the dignity of the priesthood for ever.
[25] A covenant was also established with David,
the son of Jesse, of the tribe of Judah:
the heritage of the king is from son to son only;
so the heritage of Aaron is for his descendants.
[26] May the Lord grant you wisdom in your heart
to judge his people in righteousness,
so that their prosperity may not vanish,
and that their glory may endure throughout their
generations.

[10]이 어깨걸이는 황금실과 자홍실과
진홍실로 짜 거룩한 옷으로서 자수가의
작품이다.
가슴에는 진리의 상징인
재판관의 흉패를 달았으니 그것은 새빨간
실로 짠 공예사의 작품이다.
[11]거기에는 보석장이가 보석들을
도장 모양으로 잘라서 황금틀에다 박아
놓았다.
이 보석들에 이스라엘 지파의
수대로 이름을 새겨서 기념으로 삼게
하셨다.
[12]두건 위에 금관을 씌워 주셨는데
금관에는 축복의 문장이 새겨져 있다.
이런 것은 얼마나 보기 좋은 장식물인가?
얼마나 훌륭한 솜씨인가,
또 얼마나
자랑스러운 명예인가,
[13]이와 같이 아름다운 것들을 몸에
지녔던 사람은 일찌기 아무도 없었고,
이교도로서는 아무도 몸에 걸쳐 보지 못한
것이요 다만 아론의 자손들과 그의
후손들만이 만대에 누릴 영예인 것이다.
[14]그가 바치는 제물은 완전히
타올랐고 그 제사는 하루에 두 차례씩
끊임없이 있었다.
[15]모세는 아론의 손을 축복하고
성유를 그에게 부어 주었다.

맡기시고 율법에 따르는 사법권을 주셨다.
이렇게 해서 야곱에게는 당신의 계율을
가르치고 이스라엘에게는 당신의 율법을
밝혀 주게 하셨다.
[18]다른 민족들이 아론을 시기하여
광야에서 들고 일어났다.
증오심으로
포악해진 다탄족과 아비란족,

코라의 무리들이었다.
[19]주님께서는 이것을 보시고 그들을

영광을 받은 셋째 번 사람이다.
그는
주님을 두려워함에 있어서 열심을 보였고
백성들이 모반하였을 때에 용감하게
지조를 지켰으며,
이스라엘을 위하여
희생하였다.
[24]그래서 주님은 그와 더불어
평화의 계약을 맺어 그로 하여금 성자들과
백성의 지도자가 되게 하셨고,
그와 그의
후손들에게 영원한 사제직을 맡기셨다.
[25]그래서 주님께서 유다 지파
이새의 아들,
다윗과 맺은 계약은
아들들에게만 대대로 왕권을 계승하게
되었으나 아론의 사제직은 그의 일가 모든
후손들에게 계승되는 것이다.
[26]바라옵건데 주님께서 이 후손들의
마음을 지혜로 채우시고 당신 백성을 의로
다스리게 해 주시기를!

[1] Joshua the son of Nun was mighty in war,
and was the successor of Moses in prophesying.
He became, in accordance with his name,
a great savior of God's elect,
to take vengeance on the enemies that rose against them,
so that he might give Israel its inheritance.
[2] How glorious he was when he lifted his hands
and stretched out his sword against the cities!
[3] Who before him ever stood so firm?
For he waged the wars of the Lord.
[4] Was not the sun held back by his hand?
And did not one day become as long as two?
[5] He called upon the Most High, the Mighty One,
when enemies pressed him on every side,
[6] and the great Lord answered him
with hailstones of mighty power.
He hurled down war upon that nation,
and at the descent of Beth-horon he destroyed
those who resisted,
so that the nations might know his armament,
that he was fighting in the sight of the Lord;
for he wholly followed the Mighty One.
[7] And in the days of Moses he did a loyal deed,
he and Caleb the son of Jephunneh:
they withstood the congregation,
restrained the people from sin,
and stilled their wicked murmuring.
[8] And these two alone were preserved
out of six hundred thousand people on foot,
to bring them into their inheritance,
into a land flowing with milk and honey.
[9] And the Lord gave Caleb strength,
which remained with him to old age,
so that he went up to the hill country,
and his children obtained it for an inheritance;
[10] so that all the sons of Israel might see
that it is good to follow the Lord.
[11] The judges also, with their respective names,
those whose hearts did not fall into idolatry
and who did not turn away from the Lord --
may their memory be blessed!
[12] May their bones revive from where they lie,
and may the name of those who have been honored
live again in their sons!
[13] Samuel, beloved by his Lord,
a prophet of the Lord, established the kingdom
and anointed rulers over his people.
[14] By the law of the Lord he judged the
congregation,
and the Lord watched over Jacob.
[15] By his faithfulness he was proved to be a
prophet,
and by his words he became known as a trustworthy seer.
[16] He called upon the Lord, the Mighty One,
when his enemies pressed him on every side,
and he offered in sacrifice a sucking lamb.
[17] Then the Lord thundered from heaven,
and made his voice heard with a mighty sound;
[18] and he wiped out the leaders of the people of
Tyre
and all the rulers of the Philistines.
[19] Before the time of his eternal sleep,
Samuel called men to witness before the Lord and his
anointed:
"I have not taken any one's property,
not so much as a pair of shoes."
And no man accused him.
[20] Even after he had fallen asleep he prophesied
and revealed to the king his death,
and lifted up his voice out of the earth in prophecy,
to blot out the wickedness of the people.

용감하였고 예언하는 일에 있어서 모세의
후계자였다.

자기 땅을 차지하게 하였다.

칼을 휘둘렀을 때에 얼마나 장하였던가!
[3]그와 같은 결단력을 보인 사람은
일찌기 없었다.
그는 몸소 주님의 전쟁을
치렀다.
[4]그는 자기 손으로 태양을 멈추게
하였고 하루를 이틀로 만들었다.
[5]원수들이 사방에서 쳐들어 올 때,
지극히 높으시고 전능하신 분께 부르짖자,
위대하신 주님께서 그의 호소를 들어
주시어 맹렬한 돌벼락을 내리셨다.
[6]그는 원수의 백성을 덮쳐서

나라의 고산지대를 정복할 수 있었으며 그
후손들은 그 땅을 유산으로 받아서 지키고

[19]그는 영원한 안식으로 들어 가기
전에,

[1] And after him Nathan rose up
to prophesy in the days of David.
[2] As the fat is selected from the peace offering,
so David was selected from the sons of Israel.
[3] He played with lions as with young goats,
and with bears as with lambs of the flock.
[4] In his youth did he not kill a giant,
and take away reproach from the people,
when he lifted his hand with a stone in the sling
and struck down the boasting of Goliath?
[5] For he appealed to the Lord, the Most High,
and he gave him strength in his right hand
to slay a man mighty in war,
to exalt the power of his people.
[6] So they glorified him for his ten thousands,
and praised him for the blessings of the Lord,
when the glorious diadem was bestowed upon him.
[7] For he wiped out his enemies on every side,
and annihilated his adversaries the Philistines;
he crushed their power even to this day.
[8] In all that he did he gave thanks
to the Holy One, the Most High, with ascriptions of glory;
he sang praise with all his heart,
and he loved his Maker.
[9] He placed singers before the altar,
to make sweet melody with their voices.
[10] He gave beauty to the feasts,
and arranged their times throughout the year,
while they praised God's holy name,
and the sanctuary resounded from early morning.
[11] The Lord took away his sins,
and exalted his power for ever;
he gave him the covenant of kings
and a throne of glory in Israel.
[12] After him rose up a wise son
who fared amply because of him;
[13] Solomon reigned in days of peace,
and God gave him rest on every side,
that he might build a house for his name
and prepare a sanctuary to stand for ever.
[14] How wise you became in your youth!
You overflowed like a river with understanding.
[15] Your soul covered the earth,
and you filled it with parables and riddles.
[16] Your name reached to far-off islands,
and you were loved for your peace.
[17] For your songs and proverbs and parables,
and for your interpretations, the countries marveled at
you.
[18] In the name of the Lord God,
who is called the God of Israel,
you gathered gold like tin
and amassed silver like lead.
[19] But you laid your loins beside women,
and through your body you were brought into subjection.
[20] You put stain upon your honor,
and defiled your posterity,
so that you brought wrath upon your children
and they were grieved at your folly,
[21] so that the sovereignty was divided
and a disobedient kingdom arose out of Ephraim.
[22] But the Lord will never give up his mercy,
nor cause any of his works to perish;
he will never blot out the descendants of his chosen one,
nor destroy the posterity of him who loved him;
so he gave a remnant to Jacob,
and to David a root of his stock.
[23] Solomon rested with his fathers,
and left behind him one of his sons,
ample in folly and lacking in understanding,
Rehoboam, whose policy caused the people to revolt.
Also Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin
and gave to Ephraim a sinful way.
[24] Their sins became exceedingly many,
so as to remove them from their land.
[25] For they sought out every sort of wickedness,
till vengeance came upon them.

한없이 늘어만 갔고 마침내는 나라에서
추방당하게 되었다.
[25]갖은 악행을 자행하다가 끝내
천벌을 받게 되었던 것이다.

[1] Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire,
and his word burned like a torch.
[2] He brought a famine upon them,
and by his zeal he made them few in number.
[3] By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens,
and also three times brought down fire.
[4] How glorious you were, O Elijah, in your
wondrous deeds!
And who has the right to boast which you have?
[5] You who raised a corpse from death
and from Hades, by the word of the Most High;
[6] who brought kings down to destruction,
and famous men from their beds;
[7] who heard rebuke at Sinai
and judgments of vengeance at Horeb;
[8] who anointed kings to inflict retribution,
and prophets to succeed you.
[9] You who were taken up by a whirlwind of fire,
in a chariot with horses of fire;
[10] you who are ready at the appointed time, it is
written,
to calm the wrath of God before it breaks out in fury,
to turn the heart of the father to the son,
and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
[11] Blessed are those who saw you,
and those who have been adorned in love;
for we also shall surely live.
[12] It was Elijah who was covered by the
whirlwind,
and Elisha was filled with his spirit;
in all his days he did not tremble before any ruler,
and no one brought him into subjection.
[13] Nothing was too hard for him,
and when he was dead his body prophesied.
[14] As in his life he did wonders,
so in death his deeds were marvelous.
[15] For all this the people did not repent,
and they did not forsake their sins,
till they were carried away captive from their land
and were scattered over all the earth;
the people were left very few in number,
but with rulers from the house of David.
[16] Some of them did what was pleasing to God,
but others multiplied sins.
[17] Hezekiah fortified his city,
and brought water into the midst of it;
he tunneled the sheer rock with iron
and built pools for water.
[18] In his days Sennacherib came up,
and sent the Rabshakeh;
he lifted up his hand against Zion
and made great boasts in his arrogance.
[19] Then their hearts were shaken and their hands
trembled,
and they were in anguish, like women in travail.
[20] But they called upon the Lord who is merciful,
spreading forth their hands toward him;
and the Holy One quickly heard them from heaven,
and delivered them by the hand of Isaiah.
[21] The Lord smote the camp of the Assyrians,
and his angel wiped them out.
[22] For Hezekiah did what was pleasing to the
Lord,
and he held strongly to the ways of David his father,
which Isaiah the prophet commanded,
who was great and faithful in his vision.
[23] In his days the sun went backward,
and he lengthened the life of the king.
[24] By the spirit of might he saw the last things,
and comforted those who mourned in Zion.
[25] He revealed what was to occur to the end of
time,
and the hidden things before they came to pass.

[1]그 때 예언자 엘리야가 불과 같이
일어났으니,

받들어 죽은 사람을 지옥으로부터
건져냈습니다.
[6]당신은 많은 왕들을 멸망시키고
지체 높은 사람들을 잠자리에서 죽음으로
치닫게 하였습니다.
[7]당신은 시나이산에서 책망의
말씀을 들었고,
호렙산에서 징벌의 명령을
받들었습니다.
[8]당신은 왕들을 거룩한 기름으로
성별하여 그들의 원수를 갚게 하려고,
당신을 계승할 예언자들에게도 같은
예식을 행하였습니다.
[9]당신은 불마차를 타고 불 소용돌이
속 하늘로 올라 갔습니다.
[10]당신이 심판날에 와서 하느님의
분노가 터지기 전에 그 분노의 불을 끄고
아비들의 마음을 자식에게로 돌리며

당신과 사랑으로 맺어진

생명을 얻을 것입니다.
[12]엘리야가 회오리바람에 싸여
사라질 때,
엘리사는 엘리야의 심령으로
가득찼었다.
그는 일생 동안 어떠한
군주도 두려워하지 않았으며 아무도 그를
굴복시킬 수 없었다.
[13]그에게는 어려운 일이란 하나도
없었고 무덤 속에서도 예언자로서의
직분을 다하였다.
[14]그는 살아 생전에 놀라운 일들을
행하였으며 죽은 후의 업적 또한
신기하였다.

뉘우치지 않았으며 죄를 끊어 버리지
않아서,
마침내 그들은 제 나라에서
쫓겨나 사방에 흩어져 살게 되었다.
[16]그래서 소수의 백성만이 남아,
다윗 가문의 통치자와 함께 살았다.
그들
중 몇 사람은 착하게 살아서 주님을
기쁘게 해 드렸으나 나머지 사람들은
끊임없이 죄를 지었다.
[17]히즈키야는 그의 도성을 견고히
하고 성 안에 물을 끌어 들였다.
그리고
쇠로 바위에 굴을 파서 저수지를 만들었다.
[18]그의 시대에 산헤립이 왕이 되어
랍사게를 사신으로 보냈다.
그가 시온산을
향하여 손을 들고 거만하게
호언장담하였다.
[19]히즈키야의 백성들은 마음과 손이
떨리고 산모의 진통 같은 고통을 당하였다.

팔을 들고 주님의 자비를 구하였다.
거룩하신 분께서 곧 하늘에서 그들의
간청을 들으시고 이사야를 시켜 그들을
구해 주셨다.
[21]주님은 아시리아 군대를
내리치시고 천사를 보내어 그들을
몰살시키셨다.
[22]히즈키야는 주님께서 기뻐하시는
일만 하였다.
그리고 하느님의 교시를
충실히 전한,
위대한 예언자 이사야의
가르침을 따라 자기 조상 다윗의 길을
굳건히 지켰다.
[23]이사야는 그 때에 태양을
뒷걸음질시켜서 왕의 수명을 연장시킨
분이다.
[24]이사야는 강한 신통력을 가지고
미래를 내다보았으며,
슬피 우는 시온
사람들을 위로하였고,
[25]세상 종말까지 일어날 일들을
보여 주었으며 감추어진 일들을 사전에
미리 알려 주었다.

[1] The memory of Josiah is like a blending of
incense
prepared by the art of the perfumer;
it is sweet as honey to every mouth,
and like music at a banquet of wine.
[2] He was led aright in converting the people,
and took away the abominations of iniquity.
[3] He set his heart upon the Lord;
in the days of wicked men he strengthened godliness.
[4] Except David and Hezekiah and Josiah
they all sinned greatly,
for they forsook the law of the Most High;
the kings of Judah came to an end;
[5] for they gave their power to others,
and their glory to a foreign nation,
[6] who set fire to the chosen city of the
sanctuary,
and made her streets desolate,
according to the word of Jeremiah.
[7] For they had afflicted him;
yet he had been consecrated in the womb as prophet,
to pluck up and afflict and destroy,
and likewise to build and to plant.
[8] It was Ezekiel who saw the vision of glory
which God showed him above the chariot of the cherubim.
[9] For God remembered his enemies with storm,
and did good to those who directed their ways aright.
[10] May the bones of the twelve prophets
revive from where they lie,
for they comforted the people of Jacob
and delivered them with confident hope.
[11] How shall we magnify Zerubbabel?
He was like a signet on the right hand,
[12] and so was Jeshua the son of Jozadak;
in their days they built the house
and raised a temple holy to the Lord,
prepared for everlasting glory.
[13] The memory of Nehemiah also is lasting;
he raised for us the walls that had fallen,
and set up the gates and bars
and rebuilt our ruined houses.
[14] No one like Enoch has been created on earth,
for he was taken up from the earth.
[15] And no man like Joseph has been born,
and his bones are cared for.
[16] Shem and Seth were honored among men,
and Adam above every living being in the creation. |

[1] The leader of his brethren and the pride of his
people
was Simon the high priest, son of Onias,
who in his life repaired the house,
and in his time fortified the temple.
[2] He laid the foundations for the high double
walls,
the high retaining walls for the temple enclosure.
[3] In his days a cistern for water was quarried
out,
a reservoir like the sea in circumference.
[4] He considered how to save his people from ruin,
and fortified the city to withstand a seige.
[5] How glorious he was when the people gathered
round him
as he came out of the inner sanctuary!
[6] Like the morning star among the clouds,
like the moon when it is full;
[7] like the sun shining upon the temple of the
Most High,
and like the rainbow gleaming in glorious clouds;
[8] like roses in the days of the first fruits,
like lilies by a spring of water,
like a green shoot on Lebanon on a summer day;
[9] like fire and incense in the censer,
like a vessel of hammered gold
adorned with all kinds of precious stones;
[10] like an olive tree putting forth its fruit,
and like a cypress towering in the clouds.
[11] When he put on his glorious robe
and clothed himself with superb perfection
and went up to the holy altar,
he made the court of the sanctuary glorious.
[12] And when he received the portions from the
hands of the priests,
as he stood by the hearth of the altar
with a garland of brethren around him,
he was like a young cedar on Lebanon;
and they surrounded him like the trunks of palm trees,
[13] all the sons of Aaron in their splendor
with the Lord's offering in their hands,
before the whole congregation of Israel.
[14] Finishing the service at the altars,
and arranging the offering to the Most High, the Almighty,
[15] he reached out his hand to the cup
and poured a libation of the blood of the grape;
he poured it out at the foot of the altar,
a pleasing odor to the Most High, the King of all.
[16] Then the sons of Aaron shouted,
they sounded the trumpets of hammered work,
they made a great noise to be heard
for remembrance before the Most High.
[17] Then all the people together made haste
and fell to the ground upon their faces
to worship their Lord,
the Almighty, God Most High.
[18] And the singers praised him with their voices
in sweet and full-toned melody.
[19] And the people besought the Lord Most High
in prayer before him who is merciful,
till the order of worship of the Lord was ended;
so they completed his service.
[20] Then Simon came down, and lifted up his hands
over the whole congregation of the sons of Israel,
to pronounce the blessing of the Lord with his lips,
and to glory in his name;
[21] and they bowed down in worship a second time,
to receive the blessing from the Most High.
[22] And now bless the God of all,
who in every way does great things;
who exalts our days from birth,
and deals with us according to his mercy.
[23] May he give us gladness of heart,
and grant that peace may be in our days in Israel,
as in the days of old.
[24] May he entrust to us his mercy!
And let him deliver us in our days!
[25] With two nations my soul is vexed,
and the third is no nation:
[26] Those who live on Mount Seir, and the
Philistines,
and the foolish people that dwell in Shechem.
[27] Instruction in understanding and knowledge
I have written in this book,
Jesus the son of Sirach, son of Eleazar, of Jerusalem,
who out of his heart poured forth wisdom.
[28] Blessed is he who concerns himself with these
things,
and he who lays them to heart will become wise.
[29] For if he does them, he will be strong for all
things,
for the light of the Lord is his path.

백합 같았으며 여름철의 유향나무

[10]그는 또 열매가 주렁주렁 달린
올리브나무와 같았고 구름까지 치솟은
송백과 같았다.
[11]시몬이 찬란한 제복을 입고
휘황찬란한 패물로 단장하고 거룩한
제단으로 올라 가서 성소 안을 영광으로
충만하게 했을 때에 그 얼마나
장관이었던가?
[12]그가 제단 곁에 서서
사제들로부터 제물의 몫을 받을 때에,
그의 형제들은 화환모양으로 그를 둘러
쌌다.
그는 종려나무에 둘러싸인 레바논의
싱싱한 삼나무처럼,
[13]아론의 모든 자손들이 찬란한
옷차림을 하고,
주님께 바칠 제물을 손에
든 이스라엘의 온 회중 앞에 섰을 때,
[14]시몬은 전능하시고 지극히 높으신
분께 정중하게 제물을 바치면서 제사를
지냈다.
[15]그가 손을 내밀어 거룩한 잔을
들고 포도즙을 약간 부어,
제단 밑에 쏟을
때,
만물의 왕이시며 지극히 높으신 분께
오르는 향기가 그윽하였다.
[16]그 때에 아론의 자손들은 환성을
올리고,
잘 두들겨 만든 쇠나팔을 불며 그
소리를 우렁차게 울려서,
지극히 높으신
분 앞에 기념으로 삼았다.
[17]그러자 사람들은 일제히 모두
땅에 엎드려,
전능하시고 지극히 높으신
하느님이신,
그들의 주님을 경배하였다.
[18]악사들은 찬미가를 불렀는데,
그
모든 노래는 아름다운 가락을 이루었다.
[19]사람들은 지극히 높으신 주님께
탄원하고 자비로우신 분께 기도를 올렸다.
이렇게 해서 주님께 바치는 예배가 끝나고
예식을 모두 마쳤다.
[20]그 후에 시몬은 제단에서 내려 와
팔을 들어 그 곳에 모인 이스라엘
자손들에게 큰 소리로 주님의 축복을 빌어
주었다.
이렇듯이 그는 주님의 이름을
부르는 영광을 누렸다.
[21]그래서 사람들은 다시 엎드려,
지극히 높으신 분의 축복을 받았다.
[22]자,
이제 만물의 하느님을
찬미하여라.
그분은 어디에서나 큰일을
하시는 분이시며 우리가 태어날 때부터
우리의 나날을 높여 주셨고,
우리에게
당신의 자비를 베풀어 주셨다.
[23]주님!
우리 마음에 기쁨을 주시고
우리 시대에 평화를 주시며 이스라엘에
영원한 평화를 주소서.
[24]우리에게 항상 자비를 베푸시고
이 시대에 우리를 구원하소서.
[25]내가 마음으로 증오하는 민족이
둘 있는데 셋째 번 것은 민족이라 할 수도
없다.
[26]사마리아산에 사는 주민들과
불레셋인들,
그리고 세겜에 사는 어리석은
자들이 그들이다.
[27]이 책에 쓴 지혜와 지식의
가르침은,
예루살렘 사람 엘르아잘의 아들,
시라의 아들인 나 예수가 쓴 것이다.
내
마음에서는 지혜가 냇물처럼 흘러 나왔다.
[28]지혜를 위하여 몸바쳐 일하는
사람은 얼마나 행복하며,
자기 마음에
지혜를 간직하여 현명하게 된 자는 얼마나
행복한가?
[29]지혜를 좇아 행하는 자는 무슨
일에나 강할 것이다.
그가 가는 길을
주님이 비춰 주시겠기 때문이다.

[1] I will give thanks to thee, O Lord and King,
and will praise thee as God my Savior.
I give thanks to thy name,
[2] for thou hast been my protector and helper
and hast delivered my body from destruction
and from the snare of a slanderous tongue,
from lips that utter lies.
Before those who stood by
thou wast my helper,
[3] and didst deliver me,
in the greatness of thy mercy and of thy name,
from the gnashings of teeth about to devour me,
from the hand of those who sought my life,
from the many afflictions that I endured,
[4] from choking fire on every side
and from the midst of fire which I did not kindle,
[5] from the depths of the belly of Hades,
from an unclean tongue and lying words --
[6] the slander of an unrighteous tongue to the
king.
My soul drew near to death,
and my life was very near to Hades beneath.
[7] They surrounded me on every side,
and there was no one to help me;
I looked for the assistance of men,
and there was none.
[8] Then I remembered thy mercy, O Lord,
and thy work from of old,
that thou dost deliver those who wait for thee
and dost save them from the hand of their enemies.
[9] And I sent up my supplication from the earth,
and prayed for deliverance from death.
[10] I appealed to the Lord, the Father of my lord,
not to forsake me in the days of affliction,
at the time when there is no help against the proud.
[11] I will praise thy name continually,
and will sing praise with thanksgiving.
My prayer was heard,
[12] for thou didst save me from destruction
and rescue me from an evil plight.
Therefore I will give thanks to thee and praise thee,
and I will bless the name of the Lord.
[13] While I was still young, before I went on my
travels,
I sought wisdom openly in my prayer.
[14] Before the temple I asked for her,
and I will search for her to the last.
[15] From blossom to ripening grape
my heart delighted in her;
my foot entered upon the straight path;
from my youth I followed her steps.
[16] I inclined my ear a little and received her,
and I found for myself much instruction.
[17] I made progress therein;
to him who gives wisdom I will give glory.
[18] For I resolved to live according to wisdom,
and I was zealous for the good;
and I shall never be put to shame.
[19] My soul grappled with wisdom,
and in my conduct I was strict;
I spread out my hands to the heavens,
and lamented my ignorance of her.
[20] I directed my soul to her,
and through purification I found her.
I gained understanding with her from the first,
therefore I will not be forsaken.
[21] My heart was stirred to seek her,
therefore I have gained a good possession.
[22] The Lord gave me a tongue as my reward,
and I will praise him with it.
[23] Draw near to me, you who are untaught,
and lodge in my school.
[24] Why do you say you are lacking in these
things,
and why are your souls very thirsty?
[25] I opened my mouth and said,
Get these things for yourselves without money.
[26] Put your neck under the yoke,
and let your souls receive instruction;
it is to be found close by.
[27] See with your eyes that I have labored little
and found myself much rest.
[28] Get instruction with a large sum of silver,
and you will gain by it much gold.
[29] May your soul rejoice in his mercy,
and may you not be put to shame when you praise him.
[30] Do your work before the appointed time,
and in God's time he will give you your reward.

[18]나는 지혜를 실천에 옮기기로
결심하였으며 선한 일을 열렬히
추구하였으니 부끄러움을 당하지 않을
것이다.
[19]나의 마음은 지혜를 차지하려고
싸웠고 그것을 실천하는 데 온 힘을
기울였다.
나는 팔을 펼쳐 하늘을 우러러
보며 지혜를 모르는 나의 무지를
탄식하였다.
[20]내 온 마음을 지혜에 기울였으며
마침내 순결 속에서 지혜를 찾아내었다.
처음부터 지혜를 찾으려고 온 마음을
기울였으니 나는 결코 버림을 당하지 않을
것이다.
[21]나는 마음 속으로부터 지혜를
찾으려고 갈망하였으므로,
이제 그 훌륭한
것을 얻게 되었다.
[22]주님은 그 보상으로 나에게 입을
주셨고,
나는 그 입으로 주님을 찬양할
것이다.
[23]배우지 못한 사람들아,
나에게로
와서 내 학교에 들어 오라.
[24]어찌하여 지혜를 갖지 못한 채
불평만 하고 너희 영혼의 갈증을 풀
생각을 하지 않느냐!
[25]나 이제 결론삼아 말한다.
지혜를
돈으로 살 생각은 말아라.
[26]네 목에 지혜의 멍에를 씌워라.
그리고 네 마음에 지혜의 가르침을 받아라.
지혜는 바로 네 곁에 있다.
[27]눈을 바로 뜨고 보아라.
내가
얼마나 적은 노력으로 큰 평화를
얻었는가를!
[28]가령 은을 많이 주고서 지혜를
배우며 그 덕으로 많은 금을 얻을 것이다.
[29]너희는 마음으로 주님의 자비
안에서 기뻐하고 주님께 찬미 드리기를
부끄러워하지 말아라.
[30]정한 시간이 오기 전에 네 할 일을
하여라.
그러면 주님께서 정신 때에
보상을 주실 것이다.
