[1] Wakefulness over wealth wastes away one's
flesh,
and anxiety about it removes sleep.
[2] Wakeful anxiety prevents slumber,
and a severe illness carries off sleep.
[3] The rich man toils as his wealth accumulates,
and when he rests he fills himself with his dainties.
[4] The poor man toils as his livelihood
diminishes,
and when he rests he becomes needy.
[5] He who loves gold will not be justified,
and he who pursues money will be led astray by it.
[6] Many have come to ruin because of gold,
and their destruction has met them face to face.
[7] It is a stumbling block to those who are
devoted to it,
and every fool will be taken captive by it.
[8] Blessed is the rich man who is found blameless,
and who does not go after gold.
[9] Who is he? And we will call him blessed,
for he has done wonderful things among his people.
[10] Who has been tested by it and been found
perfect?
Let it be for him a ground for boasting.
Who has had the power to transgress and did not
transgress,
and to do evil and did not do it?
[11] His prosperity will be established,
and the assembly will relate his acts of charity.
[12] Are you seated at the table of a great man?
Do not be greedy at it,
and do not say, "There is certainly much upon
it!"
[13] Remember that a greedy eye is a bad thing.
What has been created more greedy than the eye?
Therefore it sheds tears from every face.
[14] Do not reach out your hand for everything you
see,
and do not crowd your neighbor at the dish.
[15] Judge your neighbor's feelings by your own,
and in every matter be thoughtful.
[16] Eat like a human being what is set before you,
and do not chew greedily, lest you be hated.
[17] Be the first to stop eating, for the sake of
good manners,
and do not be insatiable, lest you give offense.
[18] If you are seated among many persons,
do not reach out your hand before they do.
[19] How ample a little is for a well-disciplined
man!
He does not breathe heavily upon his bed.
[20] Healthy sleep depends on moderate eating;
he rises early, and feels fit.
The distress of sleeplessness and of nausea
and colic are with the glutton.
[21] If you are overstuffed with food,
get up in the middle of the meal, and you will have
relief.
[22] Listen to me, my son, and do not disregard me,
and in the end you will appreciate my words.
In all your work be industrious,
and no sickness will overtake you.
[23] Men will praise the one who is liberal with
food,
and their testimony to his excellence is trustworthy.
[24] The city will complain of the one who is
niggardly with food,
and their testimony to his niggardliness is accurate.
[25] Do not aim to be valiant over wine,
for wine has destroyed many.
[26] Fire and water prove the temper of steel,
so wine tests hearts in the strife of the proud.
[27] Wine is like life to men,
if you drink it in moderation.
What is life to a man who is without wine?
It has been created to make men glad.
[28] Wine drunk in season and temperately
is rejoicing of heart and gladness of soul.
[29] Wine drunk to excess is bitterness of soul,
with provocation and stumbling.
[30] Drunkenness increases the anger of a fool to
his injury,
reducing his strength and adding wounds.
[31] Do not reprove your neighbor at a banquet of
wine,
and do not despise him in his merrymaking;
speak no word of reproach to him,
and do not afflict him by making demands of him.

장
[1]재산을 지키기에 밤을 새우면
지치고 재산 걱정을 하다 보면 잠을 못
이룬다.
[2]밤잠도 못 자고 걱정하다 보면
몸이 쇠약하여져서 중병에 걸린 후에야
잠을 이루게 된다.
[3]부자는 일을 하여 돈을 모으고는
일을 쉴 때에 쾌락에 잠긴다.
[4]가난한 자는 일을 해도 먹고 사는
것이 고작이요,
일을 쉬면 궁핍하게 된다.
[5]황금을 좋아하는 사람은 의로울
수가 없고 그것을 좇는 자는 속속들이
썩게 된다.
[6]파멸이 닥쳐 올 것을 알면서도,
황금을 좇다가 망한 사람들이 많다.
[7]황금을 숭배하는 자들에게 황금은
함정이며 모든 어리석은 자들이 거기에
걸려 든다.
[8]황금을 좇지 않고 책잡힐 일이
없는 부자는 행복하다.
[9]그런 사람은 누구일까?
우리가
그를 칭송하리라.
그는 정녕 백성
가운데서 기적을 행한 사람이다.
[10]그런 어려운 시련을 겪고도
완전함이 드러난 사람은 누구인가?
그런
사람은 영광을 받을 만한 인물이다.
죄를
지을 수 있으면서도 짓지 않고,
남을 해칠
수 있으면서도 해치지 않은 사람이 과연
누구냐?
[11]그런 사람의 재산은 공고할
것이며 온 백성이 은인으로 그를 찬양할
것이다.
[12]성찬을 차린 식탁에 앉았을 때,
입을 딱 벌리고, "야,
굉장하구나"
하고 말하지 말아라.
[13]게걸들린 눈초리는 상스럽다는
것을 알아라.
세상 만물 중에서 눈보다 더
죄스러운 것이 어디 있겠느냐?
그래서
눈은 자칫하면 눈물을 흘린다.
[14]주인이 바라보고 있는 음식에
먼저 손을 내밀지 말고 그가 집는 음식을
다투어 집으려 하지 말아라.
[15]네가 좋아하는 것은 남도
좋아한다고 생각하고 매사에 조심하여라.
[16]네 앞에 놓인 것만 점잖게 먹어라.
게걸스럽게 먹으면 남의 빈축을 산다.
[17]예의바르게 먼저 숟가락을 놓아라.
포식을 하는 것은 실례가 된다.
[18]여럿이 식사할 때에는 남보다
먼저 수저를 들지 말아라.
[19]점잖은 사람은 너무 많이 먹지
않는다.
그러면 오히려 잘 때에 숨이
가쁘지 않다.
[20]절제있게 먹으면 잠도 잘 오고
상쾌한 기분으로 일찍 일어나게 된다.
포식한 자에게 돌아 오는 것은 불면과
구토와 복통뿐이다.
[21]만일 권에 못 이겨 억지로 많이
먹었거든,
자리를 빠져 나와 토하고 나서
좀 거닐어라,
가벼워질 것이다.
[22]너는 내 말을 가볍게 듣지 말아라.
언젠가는 내 말을 깨닫게 될 것이다.
네가
여러 모로 절도를 지킨다면 아무 병에도
걸리지 안을 것이다.
[23]향응을 잘하는 사람은 많은
사람의 칭찬을 받고,
대체로 후한 대접의
칭송은 헛되지 않다.
[24]한편 대접에 인색한 자는 온
동네의 악평을 사게 되니,
사람들이 그의
인색함을 불평하는 것은 당연한 일이다.
[25]술을 잘 마신다고 용감한 체하지
말아라.
술 때문에 많은 사람이
실패하였다.
[26]불이 쇠의 강도를 알아 보듯이,
술은 잘난 체 떠드는 자들의 마음을 알아
본다.
[27]절제있게 마시면 술은 사람에게
생기를 준다.
술 없는 인생이 어떠하랴?
술은 인생을 즐겁게 하기 위해서 만들어진
것이다.
[28]마셔야 할 때에 적절하게 마시면
술은 마음의 즐거움이요 영혼의 기쁨이다.
[29]흥분해서 과격하게 마시면 영혼에
쓰라림을 가져다 줄 뿐이다.
[30]어리석은 자가 술에 취하면
광기를 일으켜 스스로를 해치고 기운이
쇠진하여 부상을 입게 된다.
[31]연회석상에서 술을 마실 때에
옆사람과 시비하지 말고 그를 조롱하여
남의 흥을 깨지 말아라.
또한 그에게
비난의 말을 하지 말고

Sir.32
[1] If they make you master of the feast, do not
exalt yourself;
be among them as one of them;
take good care of them and then be seated;
[2] when you have fulfilled your duties, take your
place,
that you may be merry on their account
and receive a wreath for your excellent leadership.
[3] Speak, you who are older, for it is fitting
that you should,
but with accurate knowledge, and do not interrupt the
music.
[4] Where there is entertainment, do not pour out
talk;
do not display your cleverness out of season.
[5] A ruby seal in a setting of gold
is a concert of music at a banquet of wine.
[6] A seal of emerald in a rich setting of gold
is the melody of music with good wine.
[7] Speak, young man, if there is need of you,
but no more than twice, and only if asked.
[8] Speak concisely, say much in few words;
be as one who knows and yet holds his tongue.
[9] Among the great do not act as their equal;
and when another is speaking, do not babble.
[10] Lightning speeds before the thunder,
and approval precedes a modest man.
[11] Leave in good time and do not be the last;
go home quickly and do not linger.
[12] Amuse yourself there, and do what you have in
mind,
but do not sin through proud speech.
[13] And for these things bless him who made you
and satisfies you with his good gifts.
[14] He who fears the Lord will accept his
discipline,
and those who rise early to seek him will find favor.
[15] He who seeks the law will be filled with it,
but the hypocrite will stumble at it.
[16] Those who fear the Lord will form true
judgments,
and like a light they will kindle righteous deeds.
[17] A sinful man will shun reproof,
and will find a decision according to his liking.
[18] A man of judgment will not overlook an idea,
and an insolent and proud man will not cower in fear.
[19] Do nothing without deliberation;
and when you have acted, do not regret it.
[20] Do not go on a path full of hazards,
and do not stumble over stony ground.
[21] Do not be overconfident on a smooth way,
[22] and give good heed to your paths.
[23] Guard yourself in every act,
for this is the keeping of the commandments.
[24] He who believes the law gives heed to the
commandments,
and he who trusts the Lord will not suffer loss.

장
[1]연회석의 주관자가 되면 거만하게
굴지 말아라.
너도 손님 중의 한 사람으로
자처하여라.
또 손님들을 보살피고 나서
네 자리에 앉아라.
[2]너의 할 일을 다 하고 나서 자리를
잡고 손님들과 함께 즐거움을 나누어라.
그러면 네 직분을 다한 상으로 화관을
받으리라.
[3]연장자여,
분별있게 이야기하되
음악을 방해하지 말아라.
그것이 너에게
어울리는 자세이다.
[4]여흥이 벌어질 때에 장광설을
늘어놓지 말고 흥겨운 때에 엉뚱하게도 네
지식을 자랑하지 말아라.
[5]술자리에 좋은 음악은 황금반지에
박아 놓은 홍옥과 같다.
[6]좋은 술에 아름다운 가락은
금장식에 박아 놓은 에머랄드와 같다
[7]젊은이여,
꼭 필요할 때에만
이야기하고 그 외엔 질문 받았을 때에만
말하여라.
[8]너는 말을 골라서 간결하게 하여라.
지식있고도 과묵한 사람이 되어라.
[9]높은 사람 틈에 끼거든 대등하게
굴지 말고,
남이 이야기할 때 함부로
간섭하지 말아라.
[10]번개가 치면 천둥이 울리듯이,
겸손한 사람에게는 인기가 뒤따른다.
[11]끝까지 남아 있지 말고 때가 되면
자리를 떠라.
도중에 서성거리지 말고
곧바로 집으로 돌아 가라.
[12]연석에서는 마음껏 즐겨라.
그러나 횡포한 언사로 죄를 짓지는 말아라.
[13]이 모든 것을 너의 창조주께
찬미를 드리며 하여라.
그분은 너에게
축복을 듬뿍 내려 주시는 분이시다.
[14]주님을 두려워하는 사람은 율법을
따르고 주님을 열렬히 찾는 사람은 주님의
총애를 얻게 될 것이다.
[15]율법을 찾는 사람은 율법으로
충족해지지만 위선자들에게는 율법이
걸림돌이 된다.
[16]주님을 두려워하는 사람은
정당한판정을 받을 것이요 그들의 선행은
빛처럼 찬란할 것이다.
[17]죄인은 충고를 물리치고 핑계를
찾아 제 멋대로 한다.
[18]충고를 달게 받는 사람은 반성을
게을리 하지 않으며 오만한 자와 이방인은
겁도 없이 날뛴다.
[19]생각없이 마구 행동하지 말아라.
그래야 네 행실을 후회하지 않게 되리라.
[20]험한 길을 가지 말아라.
돌멩이에
걸려 넘어질까 두렵다.
[21]평탄한 길이라고 너무 안심하지
말고
[22]네 친자식들과도 조심해서 지내라.
[23]매사에 네 자신을 경계하여라.
이것이 계명을 지키는 길이다.
[24]율법을 신뢰하는 사람은 그
계명을 지키고 주님을 신뢰하는 사람은
어떤 해도 입지 않는다.

[1] No evil will befall the man who fears the Lord,
but in trial he will deliver him again and again.
[2] A wise man will not hate the law,
but he who is hypocritical about it is like a boat in a
storm.
[3] A man of understanding will trust in the law;
for him the law is as dependable as an inquiry
by means of Urim.
[4] Prepare what to say, and thus you will be
heard;
bind together your instruction, and make your answer.
[5] The heart of a fool is like a cart wheel,
and his thoughts like a turning axle.
[6] A stallion is like a mocking friend;
he neighs under every one who sits on him.
[7] Why is any day better than another,
when all the daylight in the year is from the sun?
[8] By the Lord's decision they were distinguished,
and he appointed the different seasons and feasts;
[9] some of them he exalted and hallowed,
and some of them he made ordinary days.
[10] All men are from the ground,
and Adam was created of the dust.
[11] In the fulness of his knowledge the Lord
distinguished them
and appointed their different ways;
[12] some of them he blessed and exalted,
and some of them he made holy and brought near to himself;
but some of them he cursed and brought low,
and he turned them out of their place.
[13] As clay in the hand of the potter --
for all his ways are as he pleases --
so men are in the hand of him who made them,
to give them as he decides.
[14] Good is the opposite of evil,
and life the opposite of death;
so the sinner is the opposite of the godly.
[15] Look upon all the works of the Most High;
they likewise are in pairs, one the opposite of the other.
[16] I was the last on watch;
I was like one who gleans after the grape-gatherers;
by the blessing of the Lord I excelled,
and like a grape-gatherer I filled my wine press.
[17] Consider that I have not labored for myself
alone,
but for all who seek instruction.
[18] Hear me, you who are great among the people,
and you leaders of the congregation, hearken.
[19] To son or wife, to brother or friend,
do not give power over yourself, as long as you live;
and do not give your property to another,
lest you change your mind and must ask for it.
[20] While you are still alive and have breath in
you,
do not let any one take your place.
[21] For it is better that your children should ask
from you
than that you should look to the hand of you sons.
[22] Excel in all that you do;
bring no stain upon your honor.
[23] At the time when you end the days of your
life,
in the hour of death, distribute your inheritance.
[24] Fodder and a stick and burdens for an ass;
bread and discipline and work for a servant.
[25] Set your slave to work, and you will find
rest;
leave his hands idle, and he will seek liberty.
[26] Yoke and thong will bow the neck,
and for a wicked servant there are racks and tortures.
[27] Put him to work, that he may not be idle,
for idleness teaches much evil.
[28] Set him to work, as is fitting for him,
and if he does not obey, make his fetters heavy.
[29] Do not act immoderately toward anybody,
and do nothing without discretion.
[30] If you have a servant, let him be as yourself,
because you have bought him with blood.
[31] If you have a servant, treat him as a brother,
for as your own soul you will need him.
If you ill-treat him, and he leaves and runs away,
which way will you go to seek him?

장
[1]주님을 두려워하는 사람은 재난을
당하는 일이 없고 시련을 당할 때에는
언제나 주님의 도움을 받는다.
[2]현명한 사람은 결코 율법을
역겨워하지 않으며,
율법을 거짓으로
지키는 자는 폭풍에 휘말린 배와 같다.
[3]지혜있는 사람은 율법을 신뢰하고
그에게는 율법이 신의 직접 분부처럼
믿음직스럽다.
[4]미리 준비하고 말하라,
경청하는
이가 많을 것이다.
또 네가 가진 지식을
다하여 묻는 말에 답하여라.
[5]어리석은 자의 감정은 수레바퀴와
같고 그의 생각은 수레바퀴의 축과 같이
빙빙 돈다.
[6]빈정대는 친구는 암내 맡은 수말과
같다.
이런 말은 등에 탄 사람은 잊어
버리고 암놈을 찾아 울어댄다.
[7]일년 열두달 태양 빛이 한결같은데
어찌하여 어떤 날이 더 좋은가?
[8]그것은 계절을 구분하고 축제일을
정해 주신 주님의 뜻이다.
[9]주님께서 어떤 날은 높이시어
거룩하게 하셨고 어떤 날은 평일로
정하셨다.
[10]아담이 흙으로 빚어졌으니 모든
사람은 흙에서 생겼다.
[11]주님은 크신 예지로 사람들을
구별하시고 그들의 처지를 각각 다르게
만드셨다.
[12]그래서 어떤 사람들은 축복하시어
높여 주셨고 어떤 사람들은 거룩하게
하시어 당신 곁에 두셨다.
그런가 하면
주님의 저주를 받아 비천하게 되어
차지했던 자리에서 쫓겨 난 사람들도 있다.
[13]옹기장이가 제 마음대로 진흙을
빚어서 그릇을 만들듯이 창조주께서는
당신 판단대로 모든 사람들에게 상벌을
내리신다.
[14]악의 반대편에는 선이 있고
죽음의 반대편에는 생명이 있듯이,
죄인의
반대편에는 경건한 사람들이 있다.
[15]지극히 높으신 분의 모든 업적을
살펴 보아라.
모든 것은 서로 반대되는
것끼리 짝을 이루고 있다.
[16]나는 맨 마지막으로 잠에서
깨어나 포도 딴 뒤에 이삭 줍는 자가
되었지만,
[17]주님의 축복으로,
제일 먼저 와서
따는 사람들 못지 않게 통에 포도를 가득
채웠다.
[18]나는 나만을 위하여 일하지
아니하였고 지혜를 찾는 모든 사람들을
위하여 일하였다.
[19]백성의 지도자들이여,
회중의
대표자들이여,
내 말에 귀를 기울이고 잘
들어라.
[20]너는 아들이건 아내건 형제건
친구건,
네가 사살아 있는 동안에는
아무에게도 권력을 양도하지 말아라.
너의
재산을 아무에게도 주지 말아라.
나중에
그것이 아쉬워 후회할 것이다.
[21]너의 목숨이 붙어 있는 한,
아무에게도 너의 자리를 양보하지 말아라.
[22]네가 자식들에게 의지하는 것보다,
자식들이 너에게 의지하는 것이 낫다.
[23]너는 무슨 일을 하든지 남보다
뛰어나게 하고 네 명예에 오점을 남기지
말아라.
[24]네 수명이 다하여,
죽을 때가
오거든 네 재산을 나누어 주어라.
[25]당나귀에게는 여물과 몽둥이와
짐을 안겨 주고 종에게는 빵과 벌과 일을
주어라.
[26]네가 편하려면 종에게 일을
시켜라.
종을 놀려 두면 제 멋대로 할
것이다.
[27]소는 멍에와 안장으로 길들이고
나쁜 종은 족대기로 때려서 길들인다.
[28]종에게 일을 시키지 않으면
게을러지고,
게으름은 온갖 나쁜 짓의
선생이다.
[29]그에게 일을 시키는 것은 당연한
일이다.
만일 복종하지 않거든 벌을
주어라.
[30]그러나,
누구에게도 과중한 일을
시키지 말고 너 자신도 정의에 어긋난
일을 하지 말아라.
[31]너에게 종이 하나 있거든 그를 네
몸처럼 아껴서 다루어라.
그를 너의
피땀으로 샀기 때문이다.
[32]너에게 종이 하나 있거든
형제처럼 다루어라.
네 영혼이 너에게
필요한 것처럼 그도 너에게 필요하기
때문이다.
[33]네가 그를 학대하여 그가
도망가면 어디에 가서 그를 찾아내겠느냐?

Sir.34
[1] A man of no understanding has vain and false
hopes,
and dreams give wings to fools.
[2] As one who catches at a shadow and pursues the
wind,
so is he who gives heed to dreams.
[3] The vision of dreams is this against that,
the likeness of a face confronting a face.
[4] From an unclean thing what will be made clean?
And from something false what will be true?
[5] Divinations and omens and dreams are folly,
and like a woman in travail the mind has fancies.
[6] Unless they are sent from the Most High as a
visitation,
do not give your mind to them.
[7] For dreams have deceived many,
and those who put their hope in them have failed.
[8] Without such deceptions the law will be
fulfilled,
and wisdom is made perfect in truthful lips.
[9] An educated man knows many things,
and one with much experience will speak with
understanding.
[10] He that is inexperienced knows few things,
but he that has traveled acquires much cleverness.
[11] I have seen many things in my travels,
and I understand more than I can express.
[12] I have often been in danger of death,
but have escaped because of these experiences.
[13] The spirit of those who fear the Lord will
live,
for their hope is in him who saves them.
[14] He who fears the Lord will not be timid,
nor play the coward, for he is his hope.
[15] Blessed is the soul of the man who fears the
Lord!
To whom does he look? And who is his support?
[16] The eyes of the Lord are upon those who love
him,
a mighty protection and strong support,
a shelter from the hot wind and a shade from noonday sun,
a guard against stumbling and a defense against falling.
[17] He lifts up the soul and gives light to the
eyes;
he grants healing, life, and blessing.
[18] If one sacrifices from what has been
wrongfully obtained, the
offering is blemished; the gifts of the lawless are not
acceptable.
[19] The Most High is not pleased with the
offerings of the ungodly;
and he is not propitiated for sins by a multitude
of sacrifices.
[20] Like one who kills a son before his father's
eyes
is the man who offers a sacrifice from the
property of the poor.
[21] The bread of the needy is the life of the
poor;
whoever deprives them of it is a man of blood.
[22] To take away a neighbor's living is to murder
him;
to deprive an employee of his wages is to shed blood.
[23] When one builds and another tears down,
what do they gain but toil?
[24] When one prays and another curses,
to whose voice will the Lord listen?
[25] If a man washes after touching a dead body,
and touches it again,
what has he gained by his washing?
[26] So if a man fasts for his sins,
and goes again and does the same things,
who will listen to his prayer?
And what has he gained by humbling himself?

장
[1]허욕은 지각없는 사람을 미혹케
하고 꿈은 어리석은 자에게 환상의 날개를
달게 한다.
[2]꿈에다 마음을 쏟는 것은 그림자를
잡으려는 것이나 바람을 쫓는 것과 같다.
[3]꿈 속에서 보는 허상과 거울에
비치는 영상은 그것이 그것이다.
[4]더러운 곳에서 깨끗한 것이 나올
수 있겠으며 거짓에서 진실이 나올 수
있겠느냐?
[5]점치고 신수보고 해몽하는 것은
모두 헛된 일이며 임신한 여자의 공상과
같다.
[6]그런 것들이 지극히 높으신 분께서
보내 주신 것이 아니라면,
거기에 마음을
쓰지 말아라.
[7]꿈은 많은 사람을미혹시켰으며
꿈에 희망을 건 사람들은 망하였다.
[8]율법의 완성에 속임수가 필요하지
않으며,
진실한 사람들의 입에서 나오는
지혜는 완전하다.
[9]여행을 많이 한 사람은 아는 것이
많고 경험이 많은 사람은 지혜롭게 말한다.
[10]경험이 없는 사람은 아는 것이
적고 여행을 많이 한 사람은 모든 일에
능숙하다.
[11]나는 여행하면서 많은 것을
보았다.
하지만 내가 배운 것을 말로 다
표현할 수가 없다.
[12]나는 여러 번 죽을 고비를
당했지만,
내가 쌓은 경험의 득으로
살아났다.
[13]주님을 두려워하는 정신을 가진
사람은 살 것이다.
그들을 도와 주신 분이
곧 그들의 희망이기 때문이다.
[14]주님을 두려워하는 사람은 아무
것도 무서워하지 않는다.
주님이 그들의
희망인데 두려워할 것이 무엇이랴?
[15]주님을 두려워하는 사람의 영혼은
행복하다.
그가 누구를 의지하고,
누가
그를 뒷받침해 주고 있는가?
[16]주님의 눈길은 당신을 사랑하는
사람들에게서 떠나지 않으며 그분은
그들을 힘있게 보호하고 굳건하게 받쳐
주신다.
사막의 바람을 막는 방패요,
뙤약볕을 가리는 그늘이시며,
걸려 넘어질
대 부축해 주시고 떨어질 때 안아 주시는
분이다.
[17]주님은 삶의 용기를 북돋아
주시고 눈을 밝게 해 주시며 건강과
생명과 축복을 내려 주신다.
[18]불의하게 얻은 것을 재물로
바치는 것은 부정한 일이므로 악인들이
바치는 제물은 용납되지 낳는다.
[19]지극히 높으신 분은 불경한
자들이 바치는 제물을 기뻐하지 않으시며,
제물을 많이 바친다고 해서 죄를 용서받는
것도 아니다.
[20]가난한 사람들의 재산을 빼앗아
제물로 바치는 것은 남의 자식을 제물로
바치려고 그 아비 앞에서 죽이는 것과
같다.
[21]가난한 사람들에게는 빵 한
조각이 생명이며 그것을 빼앗는 것이
살인이다.
[22]이웃의 살길을 막는 것은 그를
죽이는 것이며 일꾼에게서 품값을 빼앗는
것은 그의 피를 빨아 먹는 것이다.
[23]한 사람은 집을 짓고 한 사람은 그
집을 헐어 버린다면,
그들에게 헛수고
이외에 무엇이 남겠는가?
[24]한 사람은 기도하고 한 사람은
저주한다면 주님은 어느 쪽에 귀를
기울이시겠는가?
[25]시체에 댔던 손을 씻고 또다시
시체를 만진다면 씻는 것이 무슨 소용이
있겠는가?
[26]이와 같이 자기의 죄를 뉘우쳐서
단식을 하고 나가서 또 같은 죄를
짓는다면,
누가 그의 기도를 들어 줄
것이며 뉘우쳐서 얻은 것이 무엇이겠는가?

[1] He who keeps the law makes many offerings;
he who heeds the commandments sacrifices a peace offering.
[2] He who returns a kindness offers fine flour,
and he who gives alms sacrifices a thank offering.
[3] To keep from wickedness is pleasing to the
Lord,
and to forsake unrighteousness is atonement.
[4] Do not appear before the Lord empty-handed,
[5] for all these things are to be done because
of the commandment.
[6] The offering of a righteous man anoints the
altar,
and its pleasing odor rises before the Most High.
[7] The sacrifice of a righteous man is acceptable,
and the memory of it will not be forgotten.
[8] Glorify the Lord generously,
and do not stint the first fruits of your hands.
[9] With every gift show a cheerful face,
and dedicate your tithe with gladness.
[10] Give to the Most High as he has given,
and as generously as your hand has found.
[11] For the Lord is the one who repays,
and he will repay you sevenfold.
[12] Do not offer him a bribe, for he will not
accept it;
and do not trust to an unrighteous sacrifice;
for the Lord is the judge,
and with him is no partiality.
[13] He will not show partiality in the case of a
poor man;
and he will listen to the prayer of one who is wronged.
[14] He will not ignore the supplication of the
fatherless,
nor the widow when she pours out her story.
[15] Do not the tears of the widow run down her
cheek
as she cries out against him who has caused them to fall?
[16] He whose service is pleasing to the Lord will
be accepted,
and his prayer will reach to the clouds.
[17] The prayer of the humble pierces the clouds,
and he will not be consoled until it reaches the Lord;
he will not desist until the Most High visits him,
and does justice for the righteous, and executes judgment.
[18] And the Lord will not delay,
neither will he be patient with them,
till he crushes the loins of the unmerciful
and repays vengeance on the nations;
till he takes away the multitude of the insolent,
and breaks the scepters of the unrighteous;
[19] till he repays the man according to his deeds,
and the works of men according to their devices;
till he judges the case of his people
and makes them rejoice in his mercy.
[20] Mercy is as welcome when he afflicts them
as clouds of rain in the time of drought.

[1]율법을 지키는 것은 곧 많은
제물을 바치는 것이며 계명을 지키는 것은
곧 평화의 제물을 바치는 것이다.
[2]남의 은혜에 보답하는 것은 고운
밀가루 제물을 바치는 것이며 남에게
자선을 베푸는 것은 찬미의 제사를 드리는
것이다.
[3]악을 물리치는 것은 주님을 기쁘게
해 드리는 것이며 불의를 멀리하는 것은
속죄의 제사를 드리는 것이다.
[4]빈손으로 주님 앞에 나아가지
말아라.
위에 말한 모든 것은 계명에 따른
것이다.
[5]의인의 제물은 제단을 풍성하게
하며,
그 향기는 지극히 높으신
분에게까지 올라 간다.
[6]의인의 희생제물은 주님께서 받아
주시고,
그 착한 행실은 영원히 잊혀지지
않는다.
[7]아낌없이 주님을 찬양하며 네
수고의 첫 열매를 바치는 데 인색하지
말아라.
[8]제물을 바칠 때는 언제나 웃는
얼굴을 하고 네 수입의 십분의 일을 기쁜
마음으로 바쳐라.
[9]지극히 높으신 분께서 너에게
베풀어 주신 대로 네 능력껏 아낌없이
바쳐라.
[10]주님께서는 언제나 갚아 주시되
일곱 배로 갚아 주신다.
[11]주님께 뇌물을 바칠 생각은 하지
말아라,
물리치실 것이다.
의롭지 못한
희생제물에 의존하지 말아라.
[12]주님께서는 공정하신 분이시라,
누구에게도 한쪽에 치우친 판단을 하시지
않는다.
[13]그분은 가난한 사람이라고 해서
그 반대편을 두둔하시지 않고 억울한
사람의 호소를 들어 주신다.
[14]그분은 고아의 간청을 흘리지
않으시고 과부의 억울한 호소를 모른
체하지 않으신다.
[15]과부의 눈물이 두 뺨을 적실 때,
그 여자는 자기를 울린 자를 향하여
울부짖는다.
[16]진심으로 섬기는 사람은
하느님께서 기쁘게 받아 들이시고 그의
간청은 하늘에 다다를 것이다.
[17]겸손한 사람의 기도소라는 구름을
꿰뚫는다.
또한 그는 목적을 이룰 때까지
만족하지 않는다.
[18]그는 지극히 높으신 분께서
의로운 사람의 무고함을 판단하시어 그를
돌보실 때까지 기도를 멈추지 않는다.
[19]그러면 주님께서는 지체없이 악한
자를 그냥 두지 아니하시고
[20]마침내 포악한 자들의 허리를
부러뜨릴 것이요 이방인들에게 보복을
하실 것이다.
[21]오만한 자들의 무리를 모조리
없애 버리시고 불의한 자들의 권력을 꺾어
버리실 것이다.
[22]각 사람에게 자기 행실대로 갚아
주실 것이고,
그 지향하는 바에 따라
공적을 판단하실 것이다.
[23]당신 백성에게 정의를 돌려
주시고,
당신 자비로 그들을 기쁨에 차게
해 주실 것이다.
[24]가뭄에 비구름이 반갑듯이 환난을
당할 때 하느님의 자비는 고맙다.

[1] Have mercy upon us, O Lord, the God of all, and
look upon us,
[2] and cause the fear of thee to fall upon all the
nations.
[3] Lift up thy hand against foreign nations
and let them see thy might.
[4] As in us thou hast been sanctified before them,
so in them be thou magnified before us;
[5] and let them know thee, as we have known
that there is not God but thee, O Lord.
[6] Show signs anew, and work further wonders;
make thy hand and thy right arm glorious.
[7] Rouse thy anger and pour out thy wrath;
destroy the adversary and wipe out the enemy.
[8] Hasten the day, and remember the appointed
time,
and let people recount thy mighty deeds.
[9] Let him who survives be consumed in the fiery
wrath,
and may those who harm thy people meet destruction.
[10] Crush the heads of the rulers of the enemy,
who say, "There is no one but ourselves."
[11] Gather all the tribes of Jacob,
and give them their inheritance, as at the beginning.
[12] Have mercy, O Lord, upon the people called by
thy name,
upon Israel, whom thou hast likened to a first-born son.
[13] Have pity on the city of thy sanctuary,
Jerusalem, the place of thy rest.
[14] Fill Zion with the celebration of thy wondrous
deeds,
and thy temple with thy glory.
[15] Bear witness to those whom thou didst create
in the beginning,
and fulfil the prophecies spoken in thy name.
[16] Reward those who wait for thee,
and let thy prophets be found trustworthy.
[17] Hearken, O Lord, to the prayer of thy
servants,
according to the blessing of Aaron for thy people,
and all who are on the earth will know
that thou art the Lord, the God of the ages.
[18] The stomach will take any food,
yet one food is better than another.
[19] As the palate tastes the kinds of game,
so an intelligent mind detects false words.
[20] A perverse mind will cause grief,
but a man of experience will pay him back.
[21] A woman will accept any man,
but one daughter is better than another.
[22] A woman's beauty gladdens the countenance,
and surpasses every human desire.
[23] If kindness and humility mark her speech,
her husband is not like other men.
[24] He who acquires a wife gets his best
possession,
a helper fit for him and a pillar of support.
[25] Where there is no fence, the property will be
plundered;
and where there is no wife, a man will wander about and
sigh.
[26] For who will trust a nimble robber
that skips from city to city?
So who will trust a man that has no home,
and lodges wherever night finds him?

삼지만 남자에게는 더 좋은 여자가 있고
덜 좋은 여자가 있다.
[22]여자의 아름다움은 보는 사람에게
즐거움을 주며 이것이 남자의 가장
좋아하는 것이다.
[23]여자의 말솜씨가 친절하고
부드러우면 그의 남편은 그 누구보다도
운이 좋은 사람이다.
[24]맞아 들인 아내가 내조와 의지의
기둥이 되면 그것은 행복의 시작이다.
[25]울타리가 없으면 재산을
약탈당하고 아내가 없으면 슬픔에 잠겨
떠돌게 된다.
[26]이 마을에서 저 마을로 떠돌아
다니며 강도질하는 사람을 아무도 믿지
않듯이,

[1] Every friend will say, "I too am a
friend";
but some friends are friends only in name.
[2] Is it not a grief to the death
when a companion and friend turns to enmity?
[3] O evil imagination, why were you formed
to cover the land with deceit?
[4] Some companions rejoice in the happiness of a
friend,
but in time of trouble are against him.
[5] Some companions help a friend for their
stomach's sake,
and in the face of battle take up the shield.
[6] Do not forget a friend in your heart,
and be not unmindful of him in your wealth.
[7] Every counselor praises counsel,
but some give counsel in their own interest.
[8] Be wary of a counselor,
and learn first what is his interest --
for he will take thought for himself --
lest he cast the lot against you
[9] and tell you, "Your way is good,"
and then stand aloof to see what will happen to you.
[10] Do not consult the one who looks at you
suspiciously;
hide your counsel from those who are jealous of you.
[11] Do not consult with a woman about her rival
or with a coward about war,
with a merchant about barter
or with a buyer about selling,
with a grudging man about gratitude
or with a merciless man about kindness,
with an idler about any work
or with a man hired for a year about completing his work,
with a lazy servant about a big task --
pay no attention to these in any matter of counsel.
[12] But stay constantly with a godly man
whom you know to be a keeper of the commandments,
whose soul is in accord with your soul,
and who will sorrow with you if you fail.
[13] And establish the counsel of your own heart,
for no one is more faithful to you than it is.
[14] For a man's soul sometimes keeps him better
informed
than seven watchmen sitting high on a watchtower.
[15] And besides all this pray to the Most High
that he may direct your way in truth.
[16] Reason is the beginning of every work,
and counsel precedes every undertaking.
[17] As a clue to changes of heart
[18] four turns of fortune appear,
good and evil, life and death;
and it is the tongue that continually rules them.
[19] A man may be shrewd and the teacher of many,
and yet be unprofitable to himself.
[20] A man skilled in words may be hated;
he will be destitute of all food,
[21] for grace was not given him by the Lord,
since he is lacking in all wisdom.
[22] A man may be wise to his own advantage,
and the fruits of his understanding may be
trustworthy on his lips.
[23] A wise man will instruct his own people,
and the fruits of his understanding will be trustworthy.
[24] A wise man will have praise heaped upon him,
and all who see him will call him happy.
[25] The life of a man is numbered by days,
but the days of Israel are without number.
[26] He who is wise among his people will inherit
confidence,
and his name will live for ever.
[27] My son, test your soul while you live;
see what is bad for it and do not give it that.
[28] For not everything is good for every one,
and not every person enjoys everything.
[29] Do not have an insatiable appetite for any
luxury,
and do not give yourself up to food;
[30] for overeating brings sickness,
and gluttony leads to nausea.
[31] Many have died of gluttony,
but he who is careful to avoid it prolongs his life.

[1]"나도 네 친구다"
라고
모두들 말하지만,
이런 친구는 명색만의
친구이다.
[2]동지나 친구가 원수로 변한다면
그것은 죽도록 슬픈 일이 아니겠느냐?
[3]이 악한 마음아!
너는 왜 생겨서 온
세상을 악으로 덮으려 하느냐?
[4]어떤 자는 자기의 친구가 행복할
때 이용하고 그가 역경에 처했을 때
배반한다.
[5]또 어떤 사람은 자기 친구와
고통을 나누며 살 뿐 아니라 원수가
나타나면 무기를 들고 같이 싸워 준다.
[6]네 마음의 친구를 잊지 말며 네가
부자가 됐을 때에도 그를 기억하여라.
[7]모든 조언자들은 자기 충고가
옳다고 하지만 간혹 사욕을 채우려고
조언하는 자들이 있다.
[8]그러니 충고해 주는 사람이라고 다
믿지 말고 먼저 그가 무엇을 요구하는지를
알아 보아라.
그의 조언은 네가
잘못되기를 바라면서 사리사욕을
채우려는 것일지도 모른다.
[9]그런 사람은 "지당합니다"
로 말하고는 반대편에서 네가 잘못되기를
기다린다.
[10]너에게 의심을 품고 있는
사람과는 상의하지 말고 너를 시기하는
자에게 네 계획을 말하지 말아라.
[11]여자와,
그 여자의 경쟁자에
대하여 상의하지 말고 비겁한 자와,
전쟁에 대하여 상의하지 말며 상인과,
장사에 대하여 상의하지 말고 사는 사람과,
팔값에 대하여 상의하지 말며 인색한
사람과,
사례에 대하여 상의하지 말고
냉혹한 사람과,
친절에 대하여 상의하지
말며 게으른 사람과,
일에 대하여
상의하지 말고 임시 고용인과,
일의
완성에 대하여 상의하지 말며 부실한 종과,
큰일에 관하여 상의하지 말아라.
이런
사람들에게서 무슨 좋은 충고가
나오겠느냐?
[12]너는 언제든지 경건한 사람과
가까이 지내라.
계명을 잘 지킨다고
생각되는 사람,
네 마음과 같은 마음을
가진 사람,
네가 실패했을 때 고통을 함께
나눌 사람과 가까이 지내라.
[13]그리고 네 마음의 충고를 따라라.
그보다 더 믿음직한 조언자는 없다.
[14]자기 자신의 마음이 흔히 더 좋은
경고를 해 준다.
[15]이 모든 것보다도 지극히 높으신
분에게 청하여라.
그분은 늘 너를 진실한
길로 인도하실 것이다.
[16]무슨 일이든지 이치를 따져서
시작하고 착수하기 전에 다시 한번
생각하여라.
[17]사람의 마음이 변하는 표적은 네
갈래로 나타나는데,
[18]선과 악과 삶과 죽음이 그것이다.
그런데 이것들을 좌우하는 것은 언제나
혓바닥이다.
[19]재주가 있어 다른 사람을
가르치면서도 자신에게는 그 재주가 아무
쓸모없는 사람이 있고,
[20]말재간만 부려 원수를 사고
마침내는 굶주려 죽는 사람이 있다.
[21]이런 자는 결국 아무런 지혜도
갖추지 못해서 주님의 마음을 사지 못했던
것이다.
[22]어떤 이는 스스로 현명하게
처신하며 그의 입에서 나오는 교양있는
말로 남의 신임을 받는다.
[23]진실로 현명한 사람은 자기
백성을 가르치며 그의 교양있는 말은 믿을
만하다.
[24]현명한 사람은 남의 칭찬을 받고
그를 보는 사람들이 모두 그를 행복한
사람이라고 한다.
[25]인간의 수명에는 한정이 있지만
이스라엘의 운명은 무궁하다.
[26]현명한 사람은 자기 백성으로부터
신임을 받고 그의 이름은 영원히 빛날
것이다.
[27]들어라,
생명이 다하는 날까지 네
자신을 단련하고 너에게 해로운 것을 알아
차려 그것을 물리쳐라.
[28]모든 것이 누구에게나 좋은 것은
아니며 모든 사람이 같은 것에 만족하지는
않는다.
[29]맛있는 음식이라고 걸신들려 먹지
말고,
음식에 탐욕을 부리지 말아라.
[30]과식하면 병이 나게 마련이고
포식을 하면 복통을 앓게 마련이다.
[31]포식한 탓으로 죽은 사람이
많으니 음식을 절제하여 오래 살아라.

Sir.38
[1] Honor the physician with the honor due him,
according to your need of
him, for the Lord created him;
[2] for healing comes from the Most High,
and he will receive a gift from the king.
[3] The skill of the physician lifts up his head,
and in the presence of great men he is admired.
[4] The Lord created medicines from the earth,
and a sensible man will not despise them.
[5] Was not water made sweet with a tree
in order that his power might be known?
[6] And he gave skill to men
that he might be glorified in his marvelous works.
[7] By them he heals and takes away pain;
[8] the pharmacist makes of them a compound.
His works will never be finished;
and from him health is upon the face of the earth.
[9] My son, when you are sick do not be negligent,
but pray to the Lord, and he will heal you.
[10] Give up your faults and direct your hands
aright,
and cleanse your heart from all sin.
[11] Offer a sweet-smelling sacrifice, and a
memorial
portion of fine flour,
and pour oil on your offering, as much as you can afford.
[12] And give the physician his place, for the Lord
created him;
let him not leave you, for there is need of him.
[13] There is a time when success lies in the hands
of physicians,
[14] for they too will pray to the Lord
that he should grant them success in diagnosis
and in healing, for the sake of preserving life.
[15] He who sins before his Maker,
may he fall into the care of a physician.
[16] My son, let your tears fall for the dead,
and as one who is suffering grievously begin the lament.
Lay out his body with the honor due him,
and do not neglect his burial.
[17] Let your weeping be bitter and your wailing
fervent;
observe the mourning according to his merit,
for one day, or two, to avoid criticism;
then be comforted for your sorrow.
[18] For sorrow results in death,
and sorrow of heart saps one's strength.
[19] In calamity sorrow continues,
and the life of the poor man weighs down his heart.
[20] Do not give your heart to sorrow;
drive it away, remembering the end of life.
[21] Do not forget, there is no coming back;
you do the dead no good, and you injure yourself.
[22] "Remember my doom, for yours is like it:
yesterday it was mine, and today it is yours."
[23] When the dead is at rest, let his remembrance
cease,
and be comforted for him when his spirit is departed.
[24] The wisdom of the scribe depends on the
opportunity of leisure;
and he who has little business may become wise.
[25] How can he become wise who handles the plow,
and who glories in the shaft of a goad,
who drives oxen and is occupied with their work,
and whose talk is about bulls?
[26] He sets his heart on plowing furrows,
and he is careful about fodder for the heifers.
[27] So too is every craftsman and master workman
who labors by night as well as by day;
those who cut the signets of seals,
each is diligent in making a great variety;
he sets his heart on painting a lifelike image,
and he is careful to finish his work.
[28] So too is the smith sitting by the anvil,
intent upon his handiwork in iron;
the breath of the fire melts his flesh,
and he wastes away in the heat of the furnace;
he inclines his ear to the sound of the hammer,
and his eyes are on the pattern of the object.
He sets his heart on finishing his handiwork,
and he is careful to complete its decoration.
[29] So too is the potter sitting at his work
and turning the wheel with his feet;
he is always deeply concerned over his work,
and all his output is by number.
[30] He moulds the clay with his arm
and makes it pliable with his feet;
he sets his heart to finish the glazing,
and he is careful to clean the furnace.
[31] All these rely upon their hands,
and each is skilful in his own work.
[32] Without them a city cannot be established,
and men can neither sojourn nor live there.
[33] Yet they are not sought out for the council of
the people,
nor do they attain eminence in the public assembly.
They do not sit in the judge's seat,
nor do they understand the sentence of judgment;
they cannot expound discipline or judgment,
and they are not found using proverbs.
[34] But they keep stable the fabric of the world,
and their prayer is in the practice of their trade.

[1]의사를 존경하여라,
너를 돌봐
주는 사람이요 또한 주님게서 내신
사람이기 때문이다.
[2]병을 고치는 힘은 지극히 높으신
분으로부터 오며 의사는 왕으로부터
예물을 받는다.
[3]의사는 그의 의술로 높은 지위를
얻으며 고관들로부터 존경을 받는다.
[4]주님께서 약초를 땅에 나게
하셨으니 지혜로운 사람은 그러한 것을
가벼이 여기지 않는다.
[5]주님께서도 옛적에 그의 힘을
사람들에게 보여 주시려고 나무를 던져
물을 맑게 하시지 않았느냐?
[6]주님께서는 또 사람들에게 지식을
주시어 하느님의 위대한 업적을 찬양하게
하셨다.
[7]의사는 약을 써서 사람들의 병을
고쳐 고통을 덜어 주고 약제사는 약초를
섞어 약을 조제한다.
[8]주님게서는 그의 사업을 그치지
않을 것이며,
그분의 평화는 온 세상에
내릴 것이다.
[9]들어라,
너는 병중에서 주님을
떠나지 말아라.
항상 기도하면 주님께서
고쳐 주실 것이다.
[10]나쁜 짓을 피하고 네 손을 깨끗이
하여라.
네 마음에서 모든 죄를 씻어

은총을 빈다.
그렇게 하여 환자의 생명을
건지는 것이다.
[15]사람이 죄를 지으면 창조주의
눈에 거슬리게 되니 의사의 신세를 지게
마련이다.
[16]너는 들어라,
사람이 죽으면
눈물을 흘리고 곡을 하여 깊은 슬픔을
나타내어라.
그리고,
의식을 갖추어 염을
하고 의례를 다 지켜 장사지내라.
[17]주먹이 아프도록 가슴을 치며
통곡하고 슬퍼하여라.
죽은 자의 지위에
따라서 비난을 사지 않을 정도로 하루나
이틀의 상례를 치른후,
사람을 잃은
슬픔을 달래어라.
[18]슬픔이 지나치면 죽음에 이를 수
있고 마음의 슬픔은 몸을 지치게 한다.
[19]역경에 처하면 슬픔이 가실 날이
없고 가난하게 살다 보면 마음이 늘
괴롭다.
[20]부질없이 슬픔에만 잠겨 있지
말고,
죽은 이보다 살아 있는 네 자신의
앞날을 생각하여라.
[21]한번 죽은 사람은 돌아 오지
못한다는 것을 잊지 말아라.
네가
슬퍼한다고 죽은 사람에게 덕될 것도 없고
네 자신을 해칠 뿐이다.
[22]"너도 나의 운명을 맞게
된다는 것을 기억하여라.
어제는 내
차례였지만 오늘은 네 차례다."
[23]죽은 사람은 편히 쉬고 있으니
추억만 남겨 두어라.
그가 숨을
거두었으니 차라리 위로나 받아라.
[24]학자가 지혜를 쌓으려면 여가를
가져야 한다.
사람은 하는 일이 적어야
현명해진다.
[25]쟁기를 잡고 막대기를 휘두르며
소를 모는 데 여념이 없고,
송아지
이야기밖에 할 줄 모르는 농부가 어떻게
현명해질 수 있으랴?
[26]그의 머리 속에는 이랑을 짓는
생각으로 가득 차있고,
저녁에는 암소에게
먹이 주는 일로 시간을 다 보낸다.
[27]모든 직공과 기술자는 물론,
주야로 일만 하는 자들은 모두 마찬가지다.
도장을 새기는 사람은 새로운 도형을
만드는데 열중하고 그 도형과 똑같은 것을
파느라고 부심하며 일을 완성하려고 밤을
새운다.
[28]마찬가지로 대장장이는 모루 옆에
앉아서 이 쇠로 무엇을 만들까를 생각한다.
그의 살은 불길에 화끈 달아,
뜨거운
화롯불과 맞싸우듯 한다.
망치소리에
고막이 터질 듯하고 그의 눈은 모형을
노려 본다.
일을 잘 마치려고 심혈을
기울이고 완성품을 내기까지 밤을 새운다.
[29]또 옹기장이는 일터에 앉아서
자기 발로 풀무를 돌리며,
생각은 항상
자기 작품에 집중돼 있고 동작 하나하나를
신중하게 한다.
[30]손으로 진흙을 빚으며 발로
반죽을 갠다.
그릇에 윤을 잘 내려고 온
정성을 기울이며 가마를 깨끗이 하느라고
밤을 새운다.
[31]이 사람들은 모두 자기 손재주에
자신을 갖고 있으며,
저마다 자기 일의
특기를 지니고 있다.
[32]이런 사람들이 없이는 도시를
건설할 수가 없고 거주민도 없을 것이고
여행자도 없을 것이다.
[33]그러나 그들은 시의회에 불리지도
않으며 공중집회에서 웃자리를
차지하지도 않는다.
그들은 재판관자리에
앉지도 않으며 법률을 잘 알지도 못한다.
[34]그들의 교양이나 판단력은
출중하지 못하고 격언을 만드는 사람들
축에 끼지도 못하지만,
그들 때문에 이
세상은 날로 새롭게 되고 지탱이 된다.
그리고 그들은 오직 자기들의 하는 일이
잘 되기를 빌 뿐이다.

Sir.39
[1] On the other hand he who devotes himself
to the study of the law of the Most High
will seek out the wisdom of all the ancients,
and will be concerned with prophecies;
[2] he will preserve the discourse of notable men
and penetrate the subtleties of parables;
[3] he will seek out the hidden meanings of
proverbs
and be at home with the obscurities of parables.
[4] He will serve among great men
and appear before rulers;
he will travel through the lands of foreign nations,
for he tests the good and the evil among men.
[5] He will set his heart to rise early
to seek the Lord who made him,
and will make supplication before the Most High;
he will open his mouth in prayer
and make supplication for his sins.
[6] If the great Lord is willing,
he will be filled with the spirit of understanding;
he will pour forth words of wisdom
and give thanks to the Lord in prayer.
[7] He will direct his counsel and knowledge
aright,
and meditate on his secrets.
[8] He will reveal instruction in his teaching,
and will glory in the law of the Lord's covenant.
[9] Many will praise his understanding,
and it will never be blotted out;
his memory will not disappear,
and his name will live through all generations.
[10] Nations will declare his wisdom,
and the congregation will proclaim his praise;
[11] if he lives long, he will leave a name greater
than a thousand,
and if he goes to rest, it is enough for him.
[12] I have yet more to say, which I have thought
upon,
and I am filled, like the moon at the full.
[13] Listen to me, O you holy sons,
and bud like a rose growing by a stream of water;
[14] send forth fragrance like frankincense,
and put forth blossoms like a lily.
Scatter the fragrance, and sing a hymn of praise;
bless the Lord for all his works;
[15] ascribe majesty to his name
and give thanks to him with praise,
with songs on your lips, and with lyres;
and this you shall say in thanksgiving:
[16] "All things are the works of the Lord,
for they are very good,
and whatever he commands will be done in his time."
[17] No one can say, "What is this?"
"Why is that?"
for in God's time all things will be sought after.
At his word the waters stood in a heap,
and the reservoirs of water at the word of his mouth.
[18] At his command whatever pleases him is done,
and none can limit his saving power.
[19] The works of all flesh are before him,
and nothing can be hid from his eyes.
[20] From everlasting to everlasting he beholds
them,
and nothing is marvelous to him.
[21] No one can say, "What is this?"
"Why is that?"
for everything has been created for its use.
[22] His blessing covers the dry land like a river,
and drenches it like a flood.
[23] The nations will incur his wrath,
just as he turns fresh water into salt.
[24] To the holy his ways are straight,
just as they are obstacles to the wicked.
[25] From the beginning good things were created
for good people,
just as evil things for sinners.
[26] Basic to all the needs of man's life
are water and fire and iron and salt
and wheat flour and milk and honey,
the blood of the grape, and oil and clothing.
[27] All these are for good to the godly,
just as they turn into evils for sinners.
[28] There are winds that have been created for
vengeance,
and in their anger they scourge heavily;
in the time of consummation they will pour out their
strength
and calm the anger of their Maker.
[29] Fire and hail and famine and pestilence,
all these have been created for vengeance;
[30] the teeth of wild beasts, and scorpions and
vipers,
and the sword that punishes the ungodly with destruction;
[31] they will rejoice in his commands,
and be made ready on earth for their service,
and when their times come they will not transgress his
word.
[32] Therefore from the beginning I have been
convinced,
and have thought this out and left it in writing:
[33] The works of the Lord are all good,
and he will supply every need in its hour.
[34] And no one can say, "This is worse than
that,"
for all things will prove good in their season.
[35] So now sing praise with all your heart and
voice,
and bless the name of the Lord.

[1]그러나 온 정력과 정신을 기울여
지극히 높으신 분의 율법을 연구하는
사람은 다르다.
그들은 옛 성현들의
지혜를 탐구하고 예언을 연구하는 데 자기
시간을 바친다.
[2]그는 유명한 사람들의 말을
보전하고 비유의 깊은 뜻을 파고 든다.
[3]그는 격언의 숨은 뜻을 연구하고
난해한 비유를 푸는 데 흥미를 느낀다.
[4]그는 벼슬에 올라 군주들을 섬기고
통치자들 사이에서 중책을 맡는다.
외국을
두루 여행하며 인간사회의 좋은 것과 나쁜
것을 체험으로 안다.
[5]아침에 일어나면서 마음을 모두어
창조주이신 주님께 생각을 돌리고 지극히
높으신 분께 온 마음을 바친다.
입을 열면
기도요,
자기 죄의 용서를 빈다.
[6]위대하신 주님께서 뜻하신다면
그는 깨우침의 영검을 충만히 받을 것이다.
그 때 그는 지혜의 말씀을 두루 전할
것이며 주님께 감사기도를 올릴 것이다.
[7]그는 공정한 판단력과 올바른
지식을 얻을 것이며 주님의 신비를 명상할
것이다.
[8]그는 배운 지식을 밝히 가르칠
것이며 주님의 계약인 율법을 빛낼 것이다.
[9]많은 사람들이 그의 총명함을
칭찬할 것이며 그의 이름은 길이 남을

장미와 같이 자라라.

백합처럼 꽃피어 향내를 풍기어라.
찬미의
노래로 주님을 찬송하고 그분의 위대한
업적을 찬양하여라.
[15]주님의 이름을 찬양하고,
노래와
거문고로 주님을 찬미하며 이렇게
찬송하여라.
[16]"놀라와라.
주님의 이루시는
모든 일이여!
주님께서 명하시는 일은
틀림없이 이루어지리니." "이게
무엇이냐.
왜 이러냐"
라고 말하지
말아라.
때가 되면 다 알게 될 것이다.
[17]그분의 말씀 한 마디로 흐르는
물이 멈추고 괴어서 그분의 말씀 한
마디로 큰 저수지가 생겼다.
[18]그분이 명하시면 뜻하시는 바가
모두 이루어지고 아무도 그분의 구원하는
손길을 막을 수 없다.
[19]사람들이 하는 모든 일은 그분
앞에 드러나서 그분의 눈을 피할 수가
없다.
[20]그분은 영원한 시간을 내려다
보시며 그분에게 있어 놀라운 일이란
하나도 없다.
[21]그러므로 "이게 무엇이냐,
왜
이러느냐"
라고 말하지 말아라.
모든
것은 목적이 있어서 만들어진 게 아니냐?
[22]그분의 축복이 강물처럼 넘쳐
메마른 땅을 홍수처럼 적신다.
[23]그러나 주님게서는 물을 소금으로
바꿔 놓으신 것처럼 당신의 분노를
이방인들 위에 내리신다.
[24]그분의 길은 경건한 사람들에게는
평탄하지만 죄인들에게는 장애물로 가득
차 있는 길이다.
[25]태초부터 좋은 것들은 착한
사람들을 위해서 만들어졌고 악한 것들은
악인들을 위하여 만들어졌다.
[26]사람이 사는 데 제일 필요한 것은
물과 불과 쇠와 소금이며,
밀가루와
우유와 꿀,
그리고,
포도즙과 기름과
의복이다.
[27]이 모든 것이 착한 사람들에게는
좋은 것이 되고 악인들에게는 악한 물건이
된다.
[28]주님께서 만드신 바람도,
벌을
내리실 때는 세차게 불게 하여 재앙을
크게 하신다.
세상 끝나는 날에 바람은
광란을 일으켜 바람을 만드신 분의 분노를
달래리라.
[29]화재와 우박과 기아와 죽음,
이것들은 벌주기 위하여 만드신 것이다.
[30]야수들의 이빨과 전갈과 독사,
그리고 죄인들을 없애 버릴 복수의 칼,
[31]이 모든 것은 그분의 명령을
이행하는 것으로 낙을 삼고 그분이 쓰실
때를 위하여 이 세상에 마련되어 있다가
때가 되면 그분의 분부를 따른다.
[32]그래서 나는 처음부터 확신을
가지고 깊이 생각하여 다음과 같이 기록해
두었다.
[33]"주님의 하신 일은 좋지 않은
것이 없고 그 업적 하나하나는 때가 오면
제 구실을 한다.
[34]그러므로 '이것은 저것만 못하다'
고 말하지 말아라.
모든 것은 때가 오면 그
가치가 드러날 것이다.
[35]그러니 온 마음을 모아 소리 높여
노래하여라.
그리고 주님의 이름을
찬양하여라."

Sir.40
[1] Much labor was created for every man,
and a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam,
from the day they come forth from their mother's womb
till the day they return to the mother of all.
[2] Their perplexities and fear of heart --
their anxious thought is the day of death,
[3] from the man who sits on a splendid throne
to the one who is humbled in dust and ashes,
[4] from the man who wears purple and a crown
to the one who is clothed in burlap;
[5] there is anger and envy and trouble and unrest,
and fear of death, and fury and strife.
And when one rests upon his bed,
his sleep at night confuses his mind.
[6] He gets little or no rest,
and afterward in his sleep, as though he were on watch,
he is troubled by the visions of his mind
like one who has escaped from the battle-front;
[7] at the moment of his rescue he wakes up,
and wonders that his fear came to nothing.
[8] With all flesh, both man and beast,
and upon sinners seven times more,
[9] are death and bloodshed and strife and sword,
calamities, famine and affliction and plague.
[10] All these were created for the wicked,
and on their account the flood came.
[11] All things that are from the earth turn back
to the earth,
and what is from the waters returns to the sea.
[12] All bribery and injustice will be blotted out,
but good faith will stand for ever.
[13] The wealth of the unjust will dry up like a
torrent,
and crash like a loud clap of thunder in a rain.
[14] A generous man will be made glad;
likewise transgressors will utterly fail.
[15] The children of the ungodly will not put forth
many branches;
they are unhealthy roots upon sheer rock.
[16] The reeds by any water or river bank
will be plucked up before any grass.
[17] Kindness is like a garden of blessings,
and almsgiving endures for ever.
[18] Life is sweet for the self-reliant and the
worker,
but he who finds treasure is better off than both.
[19] Children and the building of a city establish
a man's name,
but a blameless wife is accounted better than both.
[20] Wine and music gladden the heart,
but the love of wisdom is better than both.
[21] The flute and the harp make pleasant melody,
but a pleasant voice is better than both.
[22] The eye desires grace and beauty,
but the green shoots of grain more than both.
[23] A friend or a companion never meets one amiss,
but a wife with her husband is better than both.
[24] Brothers and help are for a time of trouble,
but almsgiving rescues better than both.
[25] Gold and silver make the foot stand sure,
but good counsel is esteemed more than both.
[26] Riches and strength lift up the heart,
but the fear of the Lord is better than both.
There is no loss in the fear of the Lord,
and with it there is no need to seek for help.
[27] The fear of the Lord is like a garden of
blessing,
and covers a man better than any glory.
[28] My son, do not lead the life of a beggar;
it is better to die than to beg.
[29] When a man looks to the table of another,
his existence cannot be considered as life.
He pollutes himself with another man's food,
but a man who is intelligent and well instructed
guards against that.
[30] In the mouth of the shameless begging is
sweet,
but in his stomach a fire is kindled.

[1]인간이면 누구나 고생스럽게
마련이고 여자의 뱃속에서 태어나는
날부터 만물의 어머니에게로 돌아 가는
날까지 아담의 자손들이 지는 멍에는
무겁다.
[2]그들이 생각하는 것이나 그들이
마음속으로 두려워하는 것은 마지막 날,
죽음 앞에서의 불안이다.
[3]영광의 왕좌에 앉은 자로부터
땅바닥이나 잿더미에 쭈그리고 앉은 자에
이르기까지,
[4]왕의 옷을 입고 왕관을 쓴
자로부터 누더기를 걸친 사람에
이르기까지,
인생은 분노와 시기,
고난과
불안,
죽음의 공포와 원한,
그리고 싸움일
뿐이다.
[5]밤에 자리에 누워서 쉴 때에도
잠은 새로운 근심을 더해 줄 뿐이다.
[6]잠들고서도 잔 것 같지 않게,
대낮에 감시받는 것같이 악몽에
시달리면서 싸움터에서 도망치는 사람과
같이,
환상에 쫓겨 다니다가
[7]구조를 받을 순간에 깨어나서,
그
공포가 한낱 꿈이었음을 알고 놀란다.
[8]사람으로부터 짐승에 이르기까지
뭇 생명에게 벌이 있지만 죄인들은 일곱
배의 벌을 받는 것이니,
[9]죽음과 피와 투쟁과 칼과 재앙과
기아와 파괴와 횡액이 그들을 기다리고
있다.
[10]이 모든 것은 악인들에게 내릴
벌로 만드셨고 대홍수도 악인들 때문에
일어난 것이다.
[11]흙에서 온 것은 흙으로 돌아 가고,
물에서 온 것은 바다로 돌아 간다.
[12]뇌물과 부정은 오래 가지 않지만
성실은 영원히 머문다.
[13]부정하게 모은 재산은 가뭄의
시내처럼 말라 버리고 비 올 때의 천둥
소리처럼 사라져 버릴 것이다.
[14]너그럽게 적선하는 사람은 기쁨을
맛보고 악인들은 망하게 마련이다.
[15]단단한 바위에 부딪쳐서 뻗지
못하는 몹쓸 나무의 뿌리처럼 악인들의
후손은 번성하지 못한다.
[16]연못가나 강가에 있는 잡초들은
제일 먼저 뽑혀 버린다.
[17]온정은 축복의 낙원과 같으며
자비는 영원히 잊혀지지 않는다.
[18]먹을 것이 있는 사람과 일하는
사람은 즐겁게 산다.
그러나 보물을 찾은
사람이 이들보다 더 편히 산다.
[19]훌륭한 자손을 가진 것과 도시를
건설하는 것은 이름을 빛낸다.
그러나
지혜로운 아내를 가진 사람이 보다 더
자랑스럽다.
[20]포도주와 음악은 사람의 마음을
즐겁게 한다.
그러나 지혜를 사랑하는
사람이 보다 더 즐겁다.
[21]피리와 양금은 아름다운 소리를
낸다.
그러나 사람의 좋은 목소리가 보다
더 아름답다.
[22]사람은 우아한 것과 아름다운
것을 보고 좋아한다.
그러나 밭의 푸르른
곡식이 더 보기 좋다.
[23]친구나 동료를 만나면 반갑다.
그러나 부부는 언제든지 반갑다.
[24]형제들과 보호자는 곤경에 처했을
때 도움이 되지만 이들보다도 적선하는
것이 우리를 곤경에서 더 잘 구해 준다.
[25]금과 은은 생활기반을 든든하게
한다.
그러나 좋은 충고가 보다 더
가치있다.
[26]재물과 힘이 있으면 자신이
생긴다.
그러나 주님을 두려워하는 것이
마음을 보다 더 든든하게 한다.
주님을
두려워하는 사람은 부족함이 없고 다른
아무 것에도 의지할 필요가 없다.
[27]주님을 두려워함은 축복의 낙원과
같아서 사람에게 어떤 영광보다도 더 큰
보호가 된다.
[28]들어라,
너희는 남에게 구걸을
하지 말아라.
빌어먹고 사느니 차라리
죽어라.
[29]남의 식탁을 기웃거리는 사람은
제대로 산다고 할 수가 없다.
그는 남의
음식으로 자기 영혼을 더럽힌다.
그러므로,
현명하고 교양있는 사람은 그것을
경계한다.
[30]사람이 염치가 없으면 얻어 먹는
것을 좋아하지만 그 뱃속에서는 불이 붙고
