[1] The wisdom of a humble man will lift up his
head,
and will seat him among the great.
[2] Do not praise a man for his good looks,
nor loathe a man because of his appearance.
[3] The bee is small among flying creatures,
but her product is the best of sweet things.
[4] Do not boast about wearing fine clothes,
nor exalt yourself in the day that you are honored;
for the works of the Lord are wonderful,
and his works are concealed from men.
[5] Many kings have had to sit on the ground,
but one who was never thought of has worn a crown.
[6] Many rulers have been greatly disgraced,
and illustrious men have been handed over to others.
[7] Do not find fault before you investigate;
first consider, and then reprove.
[8] Do not answer before you have heard,
nor interrupt a speaker in the midst of his words.
[9] Do not argue about a matter which does not
concern you,
nor sit with sinners when they judge a case.
[10] My son, do not busy yourself with many
matters;
if you multiply activities you will not go unpunished,
and if you pursue you will not overtake,
and by fleeing you will not escape.
[11] There is a man who works, and toils, and
presses on,
but is so much the more in want.
[12] There is another who is slow and needs help,
who lacks strength and abounds in poverty;
but the eyes of the Lord look upon him for his good;
he lifts him out of his low estate
[13] and raises up his head,
so that many are amazed at him.
[14] Good things and bad, life and death,
poverty and wealth, come from the Lord.
[17] The gift of the Lord endures for those who
are godly,
and what he approves will have lasting success.
[18] There is a man who is rich through his
diligence
and self-denial,
and this is the reward allotted to him:
[19] when he says, "I have found rest,
and now I shall enjoy my goods!"
he does not know how much time will pass
until he leaves them to others and dies.
[20] Stand by your covenant and attend to it,
and grow old in your work.
[21] Do not wonder at the works of a sinner,
but trust in the Lord and keep at your toil;
for it is easy in the sight of the Lord
to enrich a poor man quickly and suddenly.
[22] The blessing of the Lord is the reward of
the godly,
and quickly God causes his blessing to flourish.
[23] Do not say, "What do I need,
and what prosperity could be mine in the future?"
[24] Do not say, "I have enough,
and what calamity could happen to me in the
future?"
[25] In the day of prosperity, adversity is
forgotten,
and in the day of adversity, prosperity is not
remembered.
[26] For it is easy in the sight of the Lord
to reward a man on the day of death according to his
conduct.
[27] The misery of an hour makes one forget
luxury,
and at the close of a man's life his deeds will be
revealed.
[28] Call no one happy before his death;
a man will be known through his children.
[29] Do not bring every man into your home,
for many are the wiles of the crafty.
[30] Like a decoy partridge in a cage, so is the
mind of a proud man,
and like a spy he observes your weakness;
[31] for he lies in wait, turning good into evil,
and to worthy actions he will attach blame.
[32] From a spark of fire come many burning
coals,
and a sinner lies in wait to shed blood.
[33] Beware of a scoundrel, for he devises evil,
lest he give you a lasting blemish.
[34] Receive a stranger into your home and he
will
upset you with commotion,
and will estrange you from your family.

장
[1]가난해도 지혜 있는 사람은
떳떳하게 다닐 수 있으며 고귀한 인물들과
자리를 같이할 수 있다.
[2]외모가 훌륭하다고 사람을
칭찬하지 말고 외모가 볼품없다고
경멸하지 말아라.
[3]꿀벌은 날짐승 중에서 가장 작으나,
그것이 만드는 것은 단 것 중에 으뜸이다.
[4]좋은 옷을 걸쳤다고 뽐내지 말고
영화를 누릴 때도 교만하지 말아라.
진실로 주님께서 하시는 일이야말로
경탄할 바이지만 그것은 사람의 눈에
보이지 않는다.
[5]때마다 폭군들이 영락하여
땅바닥에 앉게 되었고 하찮은 무명인사가
왕관을 쓰기도 하였다.
[6]때마다 권력자들은 치욕으로
끝났고 고관들은 다른 지배자의 손에 들어
가기도 하였다.
[7]알아 보지도 않고 남을 비난하지
말아라.
먼저 생각하고 그 다음에
질책하여라.
[8]남의 말을 다 듣지도 않고
대답하지 말며 남의 얘기를 가로막지도
말아라.
[9]너와 관계없는 일을 가지고 다투지
말며 죄인들의 논쟁에 시비를 가리려 들지
말아라.
[10]너는 들어라,
너무 많은 일에 뛰어
들지 말아라.
일이 많으면 실수가 따른다.
또한 아무리 뛰어도 일을 다 따라 가지
못하며 일에서 빠져 나오려 해도 피할
길이 없어진다.
하느님께 의지하여라.
[11]일을 서두르며 애를 쓰나
뒤떨어지기만 하는 사람이 있고
[12]느리고 힘이 없어 남의 도움을
필요로 하고 찢어지게 가난한 사람이 있다.
그러나 주님은 그들을 인자하게 돌아
보시고 곤경에서 건져 주신다.
[13]그리고 그들을 높이 들어 올려
주셔서 모든 사람으로 하여금 경탄하게
하신다.
[14]길,
흉,
생,
사와 빈부,
이 모든
것은 주님께로부터 온다.
[15]지혜와 지식과 율법의 이해는
주님께로부터 오며 사랑과 선행의 길도
주님께로부터 온다.
[16]오류와 암흑은 죄인들과 함께
시작되었으며 악을 좋아하는 자들은
악으로 늙어 간다.
[17]주님의 은혜는 경건한 사람들을
떠나는 일이 없으며 주님께서 인정하시는
사람은 끝없는 번영을 누린다.
[18]애를 쓰고 인색하게 굴어서
치부하는 사람이 있지만 결국 그가 얻는
보상이 무엇이겠느냐?
[19]"나는 이제 편안히 쉬며 내
재산으로 잘 살 수 있다"
고 그는
말하겠지만,
그것이 얼마나 오래 갈지를
그는 모르고 있다.
그는 자기 재산을 결국
남에게 남겨 놓고 죽어 갈 것이다.
[20]네가 맺은 계약에 따라 성실히
살고 네가 맡은 일을 하면서 늙어라.
[21]악인의 성공을 부러워하지 말아라.
주를 믿고 네 일에 힘써라.
가난한 사람을
삽시간에 부자로 만드는 것은 주님에게
있어 아주 쉬운 일이다.
[22]주님의 축복은 경건한 사람에게
주는 상급이고 그런 사람에게
하느님께서는 당신의 축복을 삽시간에
풍성하게 주신다.
[23]"나에게 무슨 복이 돌아 올
것이며 이제 나에게 무슨 좋은 일이
있겠느냐"
고 한탄하지 말며
[24]"나는 가질 만큼 가졌다.
이제
나에게 무슨 불행이 있겠느냐"
고도
말하지 말아라.
[25]사람은 행복할 때 불행을 잊고,
불행할 때는 행복하던 때를 잊는다.
[26]마지막 날에,
각자의 행실대로
보상하는 것은 주님에게 있어 어려운 일이
아니다.
[27]단 한 시간의 악운이 행복한
일생을 뒤엎는 것이니 사람의 일생은
마지막 날에야 드러난다.
[28]누구를 막론하고 죽기 전에는
행복하다고 말하지 말아라.
그의 행불행은
최후 순간에야 알 수 있다.
[29]아무나 네 집에 불러 들이지
말아라.
악인들의 사기와 술수는 헤아릴
수 없다.
[30]오만한 자의 마음은 새장에 갇힌
메추라기와 같으며 첩자처럼 너의 멸망을
기다리고 있다.
[31]오만한 자는 선을 악이라 우기며
너를 잡으려 하고 네가 아무리 잘해도
흠잡으려 든다.
[32]작은 불씨 하나가 큰 화재를
일으키고 죄인은 사람의 피를 노리고 있다.
[33]악인을 경계하여라!
그는 흉계를
꾸미고 있다.
자칫하면 돌이킬 수 없는
타격을 받으리라.
[34]낯선 사람을 네 집에 불러 들이면
집안에 불화를 일으킬 것이고 너는 네
가족에게서 멀어질 것이다.

Sir.12
[1] If you do a kindness, know to whom you do it,
and you will be thanked for your good deeds.
[2] Do good to a godly man, and you will be
repaid --
if not by him, certainly by the Most High.
[3] No good will come to the man who persists in
evil
or to him who does not give alms.
[4] Give to the godly man, but do not help the
sinner.
[5] Do good to the humble, but do not give to the
ungodly;
hold back his bread, and do not give it to him,
lest by means of it he subdue you;
for you will receive twice as much evil
for all the good which you do to him.
[6] For the Most High also hates sinners
and will inflict punishment on the ungodly.
[7] Give to the good man, but do not help the
sinner.
[8] A friend will not be known in prosperity,
nor will an enemy be hidden in adversity.
[9] A man's enemies are grieved when he prospers,
and in his adversity even his friend will separate from
him.
[10] Never trust your enemy,
for like the rusting of copper, so is his wickedness.
[11] Even if he humbles himself and goes about
cringing,
watch yourself, and be on your guard against him;
and you will be to him like one who has polished a
mirror,
and you will know that it was not hopelessly tarnished.
[12] Do not put him next to you,
lest he overthrow you and take your place;
do not have him sit at your right,
lest he try to take your seat of honor,
and at last you will realize the truth of my words,
and be stung by what I have said.
[13] Who will pity a snake charmer bitten by a
serpent,
or any who go near wild beasts?
[14] So no one will pity a man who associates
with a sinner
and becomes involved in his sins.
[15] He will stay with you for a time,
but if you falter, he will not stand by you.
[16] An enemy will speak sweetly with his lips,
but in his mind he will plan to throw you into a pit;
an enemy will weep with his eyes,
but if he finds an opportunity his thirst
for blood will be insatiable.
[17] If calamity befalls you, you will find him
there ahead of you;
and while pretending to help you, he will
trip you by the heel;
[18] he will shake his head, and clap his hands,
and whisper much, and change his expression.

장
[1]선행을 할 때는 누구를 위해서
하는지를 알고 하여라.
그래야 상대방이
네 자선에 감사할 것이다.
[2]하느님을 공경하는 사람에게
선행을 베풀어라,
보상을 받으리라.
그
사람이 보상을 하지 않더라도 지극히
높으신 분께서 갚아 주신다.
[3]악을 일삼는 자와 인색한 자에게는
선행을 베풀지 말아라.
[4]하느님을 공경하는 사람만을 도와
주고 죄인은 도와 주지 말아라.
[5]겸손한 사람에게 선심을 베풀고
교만한 자는 돕지 말아라.
그런 자에게는
빵도 주지 말고 남이 주는 것도 막아라.
그가 너보다 힘이 더 강해질까 두렵다.
그리고 네가 그에게 선을 베푼 댓가로
그는 너에게 두 배의 악으로 갚을 것이다.
[6]지극히 높으신 분부터 죄인들을
미워하시고 악인들에게 응분의 벌을
내리시니
[7]너는 착한 사람만을 도와 주고
죄인은 내버려 두어라.
[8]행복할 때에 친구를 알아 보기는
힘드나 불행할 때 원수를 알아 보기는
쉽다.
[9]행복하면 원수들이 시기하고
불행하면 친구마저 멀어진다.
[10]원수를 절대로 믿지 말아라.
그는
쇠가 녹슬듯이 더욱 악해질 것이다.
[11]비록 네 원수가 겸손하게 굴고
고분고분하게 굴더라도 너는 몸을 사리고
그를 경계하여라.
거울을 닦듯이 원수를
대하여라 원수의 정체는 끝내 드러나고 말
것이다.
[12]원수를 네 곁에 두지 말아라.
그가
너를 밀어 내고 네 자리를 차지할까
두렵다.
네 오른편에 앉히지 말아라.
멀지
않아 네 자리를 탐낼 것이다.
네가 끝장에
가서야 내 말을 깨닫고 내 경고를
생각하며 뉘우치는 일이 없도록 하여라.
[13]뱀에 물린 땅꾼을 누가 동정하며
사나운 짐승에게 덤빈 사람을 누가
동정하랴?
[14]죄인들과 어울리는 자와 남의
비행에 가담하는 자도 저와 같다.
[15]나쁜 친구는 행복한 동안 네 편이
되겠지만 네가 실패하면 그의 우정은
지난날과 다르다.
[16]원수는 입으로는 달콤한 말을
하지만 마음 속에서는 너를 구렁에 처넣을
계략을 꾸미고 있다.
원수는 겉으로
눈물도 흘리겠지만,
기회만 있으면 피를
보고도 만족하지 않는다.
[17]네가 역경을 당하면 그는 먼저
와서 너를 돕는 체 하면서 네 발목을 잡아
채리라.
[18]그리고는 기뻐서 손뼉을 치고 네
흉을 보며 본색을 드러낸다.

Sir.13
[1] Whoever touches pitch will be defiled,
and whoever associates with a proud man will become like
him.
[2] Do not lift a weight beyond your strength,
nor associate with a man mightier and richer than you.
How can the clay pot associate with the iron kettle?
The pot will strike against it, and will itself be
broken.
[3] A rich man does wrong, and he even adds
reproaches;
a poor man suffers wrong, and he must add apologies.
[4] A rich man will exploit you if you can be of
use to him,
but if you are in need he will forsake you.
[5] If you own something, he will live with you;
he will drain your resources and he will not care.
[6] When he needs you he will deceive you,
he will smile at you and give you hope.
He will speak to you kindly and say, "What do you
need?"
[7] He will shame you with his foods,
until he has drained you two or three times;
and finally he will deride you.
Should he see you afterwards, he will forsake you,
and shake his head at you.
[8] Take care not to be led astray,
and not to be humiliated in your feasting.
[9] When a powerful man invites you, be reserved;
and he will invite you the more often.
[10] Do not push forward, lest you be repulsed;
and do not remain at a distance, lest you be forgotten.
[11] Do not try to treat him as an equal,
nor trust his abundance of words;
for he will test you through much talk,
and while he smiles he will be examining you.
[12] Cruel is he who does not keep words to
himself;
he will not hesitate to injure or to imprison.
[13] Keep words to yourself and be very watchful,
for you are walking about with your own downfall.
[15] Every creature loves its like,
and every person his neighbor;
[16] all living beings associate by species,
and a man clings to one like himself.
[17] What fellowship has a wolf with a lamb?
No more has a sinner with a godly man.
[18] What peace is there between a hyena and a
dog?
And what peace between a rich man and a poor man?
[19] Wild asses in the wilderness are the prey of
lions;
likewise the poor are pastures for the rich.
[20] Humility is an abomination to a proud man;
likewise a poor man is an abomination to a rich one.
[21] When a rich man totters, he is steadied by
friends,
but when a humble man falls, he is even pushed
away by friends.
[22] If a rich man slips, his helpers are many;
he speaks unseemly words, and they justify him.
If a humble man slips, they even reproach him;
he speaks sensibly, and receives no attention.
[23] When the rich man speaks all are silent,
and they extol to the clouds what he says.
When the poor man speaks they say, "Who is this
fellow?"
And should he stumble, they even push him down.
[24] Riches are good if they are free from sin,
and poverty is evil in the opinion of the ungodly.
[25] A man's heart changes his countenance,
either for good or for evil.
[26] The mark of a happy heart is a cheerful
face,
but to devise proverbs requires painful thinking.

장
[1]숯을 만지면 너도 더러워지고
오만한 자들과 사귀면 너마저 오만해진다.
[2]힘겨운 짐을 지지 말고 너보다
높은 사람이나 돈 많은 사람과 교제하지
말아라.
질그릇과 쇠그릇을 한 곳에 둘 수
있겠느냐?
부딪치면 질그릇은 깨지게
마련이다.
[3]부자는 남을 해치고도 오히려
큰소리를 치지만 가난한 사람은 피해를
입고도 오히려 사과를 해야 한다.
[4]네가 이용가치가 있으면 부자는
너를 쓰지만 잇속이 없으면 너를 버리고
만다.
[5]부자는 네가 돈푼이나 있을 때면
너를 가까이하여 아무런 가책도 없이 너를
발가벗기리라.
[6]네가 쓸모있을 때,
그는 너를 치켜
올리며 만면에 웃음을 띠고 희망을 주며
"제가 도와 들릴 일리 없습니까?"
하고 감언이설을 아끼지 않으리라.
[7]그는 어리둥절할리만큼 잔치를
베풀고 두 번 세 번 너를 우려 먹고 나서
끝내는 너를 비웃는다.
그리고 마침내
너를 만나도 본체만체 지나친다.
[8]너는 속지 않도록 조심하고 네
어리석음으로 바보가 되지 않도록 하여라.
[9]높은 사람의 초대를 받았을 때
선뜻 응하지 말아라.
그러면 그 쪽에서
더욱더 너를 간절히 청할 것이다.
[10]허겁지겁 가까이하면 거절당하기
쉽고 너무 멀리하면 저버림받을까 두렵다.
[11]높은 사람과 맞사귀려 하지 말며
너와 오래 이야기를 나눈다 해서 믿지
말아라.
그는 오래 말하면서 너를
시험하고 있는 것이고 얼굴에 웃음을 띠고
네 맘을 떠보려 한다.
[12]그는 무자비해서 네가 한 말을
감싸 주지 않고 너를 옥에서 가두고
잔인하게 대할 것이다.
[13]그러므로 조심하고 또 조심하여라.
너는 지금 패망을 옆에 끼고 있다.
[14]이 말을 들으면 자다가도
깨어나거라.
한평생 주님을 사랑하고
그분께 구원을 구하여라.
[15]모든 동물은 그 동류를 사랑하고
인간은 누구나 자기 이웃을 사랑한다.
[16]모든 짐승은 동류와 어울리고
모든 인간은 비슷한 사람들끼리 어울린다.
[17]이리와 양이 어떻게 서로 짝이 될
수 있으며 하느님을 공경하는 사람과
죄인이 어떻게 친할 수 있겠는가?
[18]늑대와 개가 어떻게 평화롭게 살
수 있으며 부자와 가난한 자가 어떻게
화평하게 살 수 있겠는가?
[19]나귀가 광야에서 사자의 밥이듯,
가난한 자는 부자의 밥이다.
[20]오만한 자들이 겸손을 싫어하듯,
부자는 가난한 자를 싫어한다.
[21]부자가 비틀거리면 그 친구들이
붙들어 주지만,
가난한 자가 넘어지면 그
친구들은 그를 걷어찬다.
[22]부자가 미끄러지면 많은 사람이
그를 부축해 주고 허튼소리를 하더라도
오히려 그를 찬양한다.
그러나 가난한
자가 미끄러지면 사람들은 그를 나무라고
이치에 맞는 말을 하여도 아무도 들어
주지 않는다.
[23]부자가 말하면 모두가 조용히
듣고 하늘 끝가지 그의 말을 치켜 올린다.
그러나 가난한 자가 입을 열면 "저게
누구냐?"
고 말하며 귀에 거슬리는
말을 하면 그를 짓밟는다.
[24]죄에 물들지 않은 재산이라야
좋은 것이다.
그러나 하느님을 공경하지
않는 자들은 가난을 언제나 악으로
생각한다.
[25]사람의 얼굴은 그 마음에 따라서
좋게도 나쁘게도 변하여
[26]마음이 기쁘면 얼굴이 명랑해진다.
그러나 격언을 만들어 낼 때는 고심이
뒤따른다.

Sir.14
[1] Blessed is the man who does not blunder with
his lips
and need not suffer grief for sin.
[2] Blessed is he whose heart does not condemn
him,
and who has not given up his hope.
[3] Riches are not seemly for a stingy man;
and of what use is property to an envious man?
[4] Whoever accumulates by depriving himself,
accumulates
for others;
and others will live in luxury on his goods.
[5] If a man is mean to himself, to whom will he
be generous?
He will not enjoy his own riches.
[6] No one is meaner than the man who is grudging
to himself,
and this is the retribution for his baseness;
[7] even if he does good, he does it
unintentionally,
and betrays his baseness in the end.
[8] Evil is the man with a grudging eye;
he averts his face and disregards people.
[9] A greedy man's eye is not satisfied with a
portion,
and mean injustice withers the soul.
[10] A stingy man's eye begrudges bread,
and it is lacking at his table.
[11] My son, treat yourself well, according to
your means,
and present worthy offerings to the Lord.
[12] Remember that death will not delay,
and the decree of Hades has not been shown to you.
[13] Do good to a friend before you die,
and reach out and give to him as much as you can.
[14] Do not deprive yourself of a happy day;
let not your share of desired good pass by you.
[15] Will you not leave the fruit of your labors
to another,
and what you acquired by toil to be divided by lot?
[16] Give, and take, and beguile yourself,
because in Hades one cannot look for luxury.
[17] All living beings become old like a garment,
for the decree from of old is, "You must surely
die!"
[18] Like flourishing leaves on a spreading tree
which sheds some and puts forth others,
so are the generations of flesh and blood:
one dies and another is born.
[19] Every product decays and ceases to exist,
and the man who made it will pass away with it.
[20] Blessed is the man who meditates on wisdom
and who reasons intelligently.
[21] He who reflects in his mind on her ways
will also ponder her secrets.
[22] Pursue wisdom like a hunter,
and lie in wait on her paths.
[23] He who peers through her windows
will also listen at her doors;
[24] he who encamps near her house
will also fasten his tent peg to her walls;
[25] he will pitch his tent near her,
and will lodge in an excellent lodging place;
[26] he will place his children under her
shelter,
and will camp under her boughs;
[27] he will be sheltered by her from the heat,
and will dwell in the midst of her glory.

장
[1]말을 함부로 하지 않고 실언으로
고통을 당하지 않는 사람은 행복하다.
[2]양심의 가책을 받지 않고 실망에
빠지지 않는 사람은 행복하다.
[3]인색한 자에게 재물이 무슨 소용이
있으며 수전노가 돈을 가져 무엇하랴.
[4]먹지도 입지도 않고 재물을 쌓는
사람은 좋은 일을 하려는 것이니 그
재산으로 결국은 남들이 호화롭게 살게
된다.
[5]자기에게 인색한 사람이 누구에게
베풀 수 있으랴.
그는 제 재산을 가지고도
즐겁게 살 줄 모른다.
[6]자기에게 인색한 사람보다 더
참혹한 사람은 없다.
그것이 바로 자기
소행의 보상이다.
[7]어쩌다가 착한 일을 한다 해도
자기도 모르고 하는 짓이며 결국에는 악이
드러나고 만다.
[8]탐욕에 찬 눈을 가진 자는
악인이어서 궁한 사람들을 외면하고
멸시한다.
[9]욕심장이의 눈은 제 몫으로
만족하지 않고 그의 몹쓸 탐욕은 자기
영혼을 고갈시킨다.
[10]탐욕에 찬 눈은 남의 빵을
탐내지만 그의 식탁은 항상 텅 비어 있다.
[11]너는 들어라,
여유가 있거든
푼푼하게 살아라,
그리고 주님께 합당한
제물을 바쳐라.
[12]잊지 말아라,
죽음이 너를
기다리고 있다는 것과 무덤에 갈 시간을
너는 모르고 있다.
[13]죽기 전에 친구들에게 좋은 일을
하고 네 힘껏 그들을 도와 주어라.
[14]오늘의 행복을 마다지 말고 너의
정당한 욕망을 채울 기회를 놓치지 말아라.
[15]네가 애써 모은 재산을 남에게
넘겨 줄 작정이냐?
네가 땀흘려 모은
재산을 남들이 제비뽑아 나눠 갖게
하려느냐?
[16]남에게 주기도 하고 받기도 하며
기쁘게 살아라.
무덤에 가서 기쁨을 찾을
생각은 하지 말아라.
[17]육신은 의복처럼 낡아지게
마련이며 "너는 죽는다"
는 선고를
이미 받고 있다.
[18]무성한 나무의 잎새들이 하나가
떨어지고 도 다른 것이 돋아 나듯이
인간의 세대도 한 세대가 지나가고 새
세대가 온다.
[19]모든 인간의 행적은 쇠퇴하고
사라지게 마련이며 그와 더불어 그 행적의
주인공들 또한 잊혀진다.
[20]지혜를 따라 살고 그것을 옳게
새겨 깨우치는 사람은 행복하다.
[21]마음 속으로 지혜의 길을 찾고 그
신비를 깊이 묵상하는 사람은 행복하다.
[22]그는 사냥꾼과도 같이 지혜를
뒤쫓고 지혜가 가는 길목을 지킨다.
[23]그는 지혜의 창문을 엿보며
지혜의 문전에서 귀를 기울인다.
[24]또 그는 지혜의 집 옆에 거처를
마련하고 지혜의 벽에 말뚝을 박아
[25]지혜 가까운 곳에 천막을 치고 그
속에서 행복하게 산다.
[26]그는 이렇게 지혜의 나뭇가지
아래에 자리를 잡고 자기 자녀들을 지혜의
보호 밑에 둔다.
[27]그리하여 그는 지혜의 그늘로
더위를 피하고 지혜의 영광 속에서 살아
간다.

Sir.15
[1] The man who fears the Lord will do this,
and he who holds to the law will obtain wisdom.
[2] She will come to meet him like a mother,
and like the wife of his youth she will welcome him.
[3] She will feed him with the bread of
understanding,
and give him the water of wisdom to drink.
[4] He will lean on her and will not fall,
and he will rely on her and will not be put to shame.
[5] She will exalt him above his neighbors,
and will open his mouth in the midst of the assembly.
[6] He will find gladness and a crown of
rejoicing,
and will acquire an everlasting name.
[7] Foolish men will not obtain her,
and sinful men will not see her.
[8] She is far from men of pride,
and liars will never think of her.
[9] A hymn of praise is not fitting on the lips
of a sinner,
for it has not been sent from the Lord.
[10] For a hymn of praise should be uttered in
wisdom,
and the Lord will prosper it.
[11] Do not say, "Because of the Lord I left
the right way";
for he will not do what he hates.
[12] Do not say, "It was he who led me
astray";
for he had no need of a sinful man.
[13] The Lord hates all abominations,
and they are not loved by those who fear him.
[14] It was he who created man in the beginning,
and he left him in the power of his own inclination.
[15] If you will, you can keep the commandments,
and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice.
[16] He has placed before you fire and water:
stretch out your hand for whichever you wish.
[17] Before a man are life and death,
and whichever he chooses will be given to him.
[18] For great is the wisdom of the Lord;
he is mighty in power and sees everything;
[19] his eyes are on those who fear him,
and he knows every deed of man.
[20] He has not commanded any one to be ungodly,
and he has not given any one permission to sin.

[1]주를 두려워하는 사람은 이와 같이
행하고 율법을 체득한 사람은 지혜를
얻으리라.
지혜는 어머니처럼 그를 나와
맞으며
[2]지혜는 어머니처럼 그를 나와
맞으며 새색시처럼 그를 맞아 들이리라.
[3]그는 이해의 빵을 먹고 지혜의
물을 마시며 자랄 것이다.
[4]그는 지혜를 의지함으로써
넘어지지 않고 지혜를 의지함으로써
망신을 당하지 않으리라.
[5]지혜는 그를 높여 그의 이웃들
위에 앉혀 주며 회중 앞에서 할 말을 일러
준다.
[6]그는 행복한 즐거움의 왕권을 얻고
영원한 명성을 차지하리라.
[7]그러나 어리석은 자들은 지혜를
얻지 못하고 죄인들은 지혜를 보지
못하리라.
[8]교만한 자는 지혜를 멀리하며
거짓말장이들은 지혜를 생각조차 않는다.
[9]죄인의 입에는 지혜의 찬미가 맞지
않으니 주님께서는 그에게 지혜를 주시지
낳았다.
[10]지혜의 찬미는 지혜로운 입에서
나오는 것으로서 주님은 그에게 지혜를
불어 넣어 주신다.
[11]"내가 죄를 짓는 것은 주님의
탓이다"
라고 말하지 말아라.
주님께서
당신이 싫어하시는 것을 하실 리가 없다.
[12]"그분이 나를 빗나가게
만드셨다"
고 말하지 말아라.
주님께
죄인이 무슨 필요가 있겠느냐?
[13]주님께서는 모든 악을
미워하시므로 주님을 두려워하는 사람은
악을 좋아하지 않는다.
[14]한 처음에 주님께서 인간을
만드셨을 때 인간은 자유의지를 갖도록
하셨다.
[15]네가 마음만 먹으면 계명을 지킬
수 있으며 주님께서는 네 앞에 불과 물을
놓아 주셨으니
[16]주님께서는 네 앞에 불과 물을
놓아 주셨으니 손을 뻗쳐 네 마음대로
택하여라.
[17]사람 앞에는 생명과 죽음이 놓여
있다.
어느 쪽이든 원하는 대로 받는
것이다.
[18]주님게서는 우대한 지혜와
전능하신 힘을 가지시고 모든 것을 보고
계신다.
[19]주님께서는 당신을 두려워하는
사람들을 굽어 보시며 인간의 모든 소행을
다 알고 계신다.
[20]주님께서는 인간에게 악인이
되라고 명령하신 적이 없고 또,
죄를
범하라고 허락하신 적도 없다.

Sir.16
[1] Do not desire a multitude of useless
children,
nor rejoice in ungodly sons.
[2] If they multiply , do not rejoice in them,
unless the fear of the Lord is in them.
[3] Do not trust in their survival,
and do not rely on their multitude;
for one is better than a thousand,
and to die childless is better than to have ungodly
children.
[4] For through one man of understanding a city
will be filled with people,
but through a tribe of lawless men it will be made
desolate.
[5] Many such things my eye has seen,
and my ear has heard things more striking than these.
[6] In an assembly of sinners a fire will be
kindled,
and in a disobedient nation wrath was kindled.
[7] He was not propitiated for the ancient giants
who revolted in their might.
[8] He did not spare the neighbors of Lot,
whom he loathed on account of their insolence.
[9] He showed no pity for a nation devoted to
destruction,
for those destroyed in their sins;
[10] nor for the six hundred thousand men on
foot,
who rebelliously assembled in their stubbornness.
[11] Even if there is only one stiff-necked
person,
it will be a wonder if he remains unpunished.
For mercy and wrath are with the Lord;
he is mighty to forgive, and he pours out wrath.
[12] As great as his mercy, so great is also his
reproof;
he judges a man according to his deeds.
[13] The sinner will not escape with his plunder,
and the patience of the godly will not be frustrated.
[14] He will make room for every act of mercy;
every one will receive in accordance with his deeds.
[17] Do not say, "I shall be hidden from the
Lord,
and who from on high will remember me?
Among so many people I shall not be known,
for what is my soul in the boundless creation?
[18] Behold, heaven and the highest heaven,
the abyss and the earth, will tremble at his visitation.
[19] The mountains also and the foundations of
the earth
shake with trembling when he looks upon them.
[20] And no mind will reflect on this.
Who will ponder his ways?
[21] Like a tempest which no man can see,
so most of his works are concealed.
[22] Who will announce his acts of justice?
Or who will await them? For the covenant is far
off."
[23] This is what one devoid of understanding
thinks;
a senseless and misguided man thinks foolishly.
[24] Listen to me, my son, and acquire knowledge,
and pay close attention to my words.
[25] I will impart instruction by weight,
and declare knowledge accurately.
[26] The works of the Lord have existed from the
beginning by his
creation, and when he made them, he determined their
divisions.
[27] He arranged his works in an eternal order,
and their dominion for all generations;
they neither hunger nor grow weary,
and they do not cease from their labors.
[28] They do not crowd one another aside,
and they will never disobey his word.
[29] After this the Lord looked upon the earth,
and filled it with his good things;
[30] with all kinds of living beings he covered
its surface,
and to it they return.

[1]성품이 불량한 자녀가 많아도
두려워하지 말아라.
불경스런 자식들은
낙이 아니다.
[2]그들이 주님을 두려워하지
않는다면 숫자가 많더라도 기뻐할 것이
없다.
[3]또한 그들의 수명이 길다고 미쁠
것 없고 그 수효가 많다고 안심할 것도 못
된다.
한 아들이 일천 아들보다 나을 수
있고 불경스런 자식들을 갖기보다는 자식
없이 죽는 편이 낫다.
[4]현명한 사람 하나만 있어도 고장은
번영할 수 있으나 신앙도 율법도 없는
부족은 멸망하고 만다.
[5]이와 같은 일들은 몇 번이나 내
눈으로 본 바요 그보다 더 지독한
얘기들도 내 귀로 들었다.
[6]죄인들이 모이는 곳에는 불이 나고
주님을 거스르는 민족에게는 천벌이
내린다.
[7]제 힘만 믿고 주님을 반역한 옛
거인들은 천벌을 받았으니,
[8]옷이 살던 고장 사람들은
오만하였기 때문에 주님의 진노를 사서
끝내 용서를 받지 못하였고
[9]죄에 빠져 우쭐대던 멸망의
족속들을 주님은 추호도 용서하지
않으셨다.
[10]주님을 거역하여 완강하게 뭉친
육십만 대군도 멸망을 면치 못하였고
[11]완악한 자는 단 한 명도 벌을 면할
수가 없었다.
자비와 응징은 주님께 속해
있어서 용서의 힘을 보이시기도 하지만
가차없이 응징도 하신다.
[12]그분은 자비도 크시고 징벌도
무서우시어 사람을 그의 행실대로
판단하신다.
[13]죄인은 장물을 가지고 그분을
피해 도망칠 수가 없으며 또한 경건한
사람의 인내는 반드시 보상을 받는다.
[14]선행을 하는 사람은 보상을
받으며 모든 사람은 그 행실에 따라
보응을 받는다.
[15]주님은 파라오왕의 마음을
완고하게 만드사 당신을 알아 보지 못하게
하시고 당신 힘을 온 천하에 떨치셨다.
[16]주님의 자비는 온 피조물에
명백히 드러나고 모든 사람들에게 광명과
암흑을 명확히 구분해 주셨다.
[17]"주님을 피하여 숨어 버리자.
저 높은 곳에서 누가 나를 기억할 것인가?
그 많은 사람 가운데서 내가 눈에
뜨이기나 하겠는가?
한량없이 많은 피조물
가운데서 나 하나가 문제될 것이 있겠느냐"
고 말하지 말아라.
[18]보아라!
하늘과 하늘 위의 하늘,
깊은 못과 땅은 주님께서 오실 대 진동할
것이며
[19]그분이 한번 지나쳐 보시기만
해도 산과 땅의 밑바탕이 흔들릴 것이다.
[20]그런데 인간은 이 모든 것을
생각하지 않는다.
어느 누가 주님께서
하시는 일을 깊이 생각하랴?
[21]폭풍이 사람 눈에 보이지 않는
것과 같이 주님께서 하시는 일의 대부분은
비밀이다.
[22]"정의의 대업을 선포할 자
누구이며 기다릴 자 누구냐?
주님의
약속은 멀리에 있다"
는 말은,
[23]지각없는 자의 생각이다.
무지몽매한 자들은 터무니 없는 생각밖에
하지 않는다.
[24]너는 들어라,
나의 가르침을
깨우치고 내 말을 네 마음 속에 새겨
두어라.
[25]내가 너에게 저울로 재듯이
규율을 가르치고 정확한 지식을 알려
주겠다.
[26]만물은 시초부터 주님의 뜻대로
된 것이며 그것을 만드신 후 각기 제
자리를 정해 주셨다.
그리고 모든
피조물에게 영원한 질서를 주시고
[27]그리고 모든 피조물에게 영원한
질서를 주시고 시간이 흐름에 따라
다스리신다.
그래서 저들은 굶주리지 않고
수고도 느끼지 않으며 제 구실을
저버리지도 않는다.
[28]그것들은 서로 충돌하거나 주님의
말씀을 거역하지도 않는다.
[29]그리고 나서 주님께서는 땅을
굽어 보시고 거기에다 좋은 것들을 가득
채우셨다.
[30]또한 온 땅 위를 온갖 생물로
가득하게 하셨으니 그것들이 다시 돌아 갈
곳은 그 땅이다.

Sir.17
[1] The Lord created man out of earth,
and turned him back to it again.
[2] He gave to men few days, a limited time,
but granted them authority over the things upon the
earth.
[3] He endowed them with strength like his own,
and made them in his own image.
[4] He placed the fear of them in all living
beings,
and granted them dominion over beasts and birds.
[6] He made for them tongue and eyes;
he gave them ears and a mind for thinking.
[7] He filled them with knowledge and
understanding,
and showed them good and evil.
[8] He set his eye upon their hearts
to show them the majesty of his works.
[10] And they will praise his holy name,
to proclaim the grandeur of his works.
[11] He bestowed knowledge upon them,
and allotted to them the law of life.
[12] He established with them an eternal
covenant,
and showed them his judgments.
[13] Their eyes saw his glorious majesty,
and their ears heard the glory of his voice.
[14] And he said to them, "Beware of all
unrighteousness."
And he gave commandment to each of them concerning
his neighbor.
[15] Their ways are always before him,
they will not be hid from his eyes.
[17] He appointed a ruler for every nation,
but Israel is the Lord's own portion.
[19] All their works are as the sun before him,
and his eyes are continually upon their ways.
[20] Their iniquities are not hidden from him,
and all their sins are before the Lord.
[22] A man's almsgiving is like a signet with the
Lord
and he will keep a person's kindness like
the apple of his eye.
[23] Afterward he will arise and requite them,
and he will bring their recompense on their heads.
[24] Yet to those who repent he grants a return,
and he encourages those whose endurance is failing.
[25] Turn to the Lord and forsake your sins;
pray in his presence and lessen your offenses.
[26] Return to the Most High and turn away from
iniquity,
and hate abominations intensely.
[27] Who will sing praises to the Most High in
Hades,
as do those who are alive and give thanks?
[28] From the dead, as from one who does not
exist,
thanksgiving has ceased;
he who is alive and well sings the Lord's praises.
[29] How great is the mercy of the Lord,
and his forgiveness for those who turn to him!
[30] For all things cannot be in men,
since a son of man is not immortal.
[31] What is brighter than the sun? Yet its light
fails.
So flesh and blood devise evil.
[32] He marshals the host of the height of
heaven;
but all men are dust and ashes.

[1]주님께서 사람을 흙으로 만드시고
흙으로 다시 돌아 가게 하셨다.
[2]주님게서는 사람들에게 일정한
수명을 주시고 땅 위에 있는 모든 것을
다스릴 권한을 주셨다.
[3]또한 그들을 당신 자신처럼 여겨서
힘을 주시고 그들을 당신의 모양대로
만드셨다.
[4]모든 생물에게 사람을 무서워하는
본능을 넣어 주셔서 사람으로 하여금
짐승이나 새들을 지배하게 하셨다.
[5]주님께서는 사람들에게 다섯 가지
능력을 주신 다음 여섯 번째는 지능을
나누어 주시고 일곱 번째는 말을 하게
하시어 당신의 업적을 풀이하게 하셨다.
[6]사람에게 입과 혀와 눈과 귀를
주셨고 마음을 주시어 생각하게 하셨다.
[7]또한 주님께서는 사람들에게
지식과 분별력을 풍성하게 주시고 선과
악을 분간할 수 있게 해 주셨다.
[8]그리고 당신의 위대한 업적을 보여
주시기 위해서 그들의 마음 속에 눈을
주셨다.
[9]주님께서는 당신의 놀라운 업적을
영원토록 찬미하게 하셨다.
[10]사람들은 거룩하신 분의 이름을
찬양하고 주님의 위대한 업적을 전하리라.
[11]주님께서는 사람들에게 지식을
주시고 생명의 율법을 유산으로 주셨다.
[12]그리고 그들과 영원한 계약을
맺으시고 그들에게 당신의 계명을 알려
주셨다.
[13]그들은 눈으로 그분의 엄위하신
영광을 보았으며 귀로 그분의 영광스러운
음성을 들었다.
[14]주님께서는 그들에게 모든 악을
경계하라고 말씀하셨으며 각 사람에게
이웃에 대한 의무를 가르쳐 주셨다.
[15]사람의 행동은 언제나 주님 앞에
드러나 있어서 그분의 눈을 속일 수가
없다.
[16]사람은 누구나 어릴 때부터
악으로 기울어져 있었고 그래서 그들은
완악한 마음을 유순한 마음으로 바꿀 수가
없었다.
온 땅에 여러 민족들을 갈라
놓으실 대,
[17]주님께서는 각 민족마다 통치자를
세우셨으나 이스라엘만은 손수
다스리셨다.
[18]주님께서는 그들을 맏아들처럼
규율로써 기르시고 그들에게 사랑의 빛을
주셨으며 결코 소홀히 대하지 않으셨다.
[19]그들이 한 모든 일은 백일하에
그분께 드러나고 주님의 눈길은 그들의
행실을 언제나 지켜 보신다.
[20]그들의 부정한 행위는 주님의
눈을 피할 길이 없고 그들의 모든 죄는
주님 앞에 드러나게 마련이다.
[21]그러나 주님은 후하시고 인간을
잘 알고 계셔서 그들을 없애거나 버리거나
하시지 않고 아껴 주신다.
[22]주님은 인간의 자선행위를
옥새처럼 귀하게 여기시고 인간의 선행을
당신의 눈동자처럼 아끼신다.
[23]언젠가는 주님께서 일어나셔서
악인들에게 응분의 벌을 주시리니
악인들의 머리 위에 그 벌은 내려질
것이다.
[24]그러나 주님께서는 회개하는
자들이 당신께로 돌아 올 길을 열어
놓으시고 희망을 잃은 자에게는 힘을
주신다.
[25]주님께로 돌아 오라,
죄를 끊어
버려라.
주님께 기도하여라,
주님의
마음을 상하게 해 드리지 말아라.
[26]지극히 높으신 분에게로 돌아
오라,
부정한 행위는 버려라.
그리고 악한
것을 역겹게 생각하여라.
[27]살아서 주님께 영광을 드리지
않는다면 죽어서 어떻게 지극히 높으신
분을 찬양할 수 있겠느냐?
[28]죽은 자는 하느님을 찬양할 수
없다.
건강하게 살아 있는 사람이라야
주님을 찬양할 수 있다.
[29]주님의 자비의 크심이여!
당신께로 돌아 오는 자들에게
너그러우심이여!
[30]인간은 모든 것을 다 이룰 수 없다.
언젠가는 죽기 때문이다.
[31]해보다 더 밝은 것이 무엇이냐?
해도 가리워질 때가 있다.
하물며
인간이야 얼마나 잘 나쁜 생각을 품겠느냐?
[32]해는 하늘 높은 곳의 군대를
돌보지만 인간은 한 줌의 흙과 재에
불과하다.

Sir.18
[1] He who lives for ever created the whole
universe;
[2] the Lord alone will be declared righteous.
[4] To none has he given power to proclaim his
works;
and who can search out his mighty deeds?
[5] Who can measure his majestic power?
And who can fully recount his mercies?
[6] It is not possible to diminish or increase
them,
nor is it possible to trace the wonders of the Lord.
[7] When a man has finished, he is just
beginning,
and when he stops, he will be at a loss.
[8] What is man, and of what use is he?
What is his good and what is his evil?
[9] The number of a man's days is great if he
reaches
a hundred years.
[10] Like a drop of water from the sea and a
grain of sand
so are a few years in the day of eternity.
[11] Therefore the Lord is patient with them
and pours out his mercy upon them.
[12] He sees and recognizes that their end will
be evil;
therefore he grants them forgiveness in abundance.
[13] The compassion of man is for his neighbor,
but the compassion of the Lord is for all living beings.
He rebukes and trains and teaches them,
and turns them back, as a shepherd his flock.
[14] He has compassion on those who accept his
discipline
and who are eager for his judgments.
[15] My son, do not mix reproach with your good
deeds,
nor cause grief by your words when you present a gift.
[16] Does not the dew assuage the scorching heat?
So a word is better than a gift.
[17] Indeed, does not a word surpass a good gift?
Both are to be found in a gracious man.
[18] A fool is ungracious and abusive,
and the gift of a grudging man makes the eyes dim.
[19] Before you speak, learn,
and before you fall ill, take care of your health.
[20] Before judgment, examine yourself,
and in the hour of visitation you will find forgiveness.
[21] Before falling ill, humble yourself,
and when you are on the point of sinning, turn back.
[22] Let nothing hinder you from paying a vow
promptly,
and do not wait until death to be released from it.
[23] Before making a vow, prepare yourself;
and do not be like a man who tempts the Lord.
[24] Think of his wrath on the day of death,
and of the moment of vengeance when he turns away his
face.
[25] In the time of plenty think of the time of
hunger;
in the days of wealth think of poverty and need.
[26] From morning to evening conditions change,
and all things move swiftly before the Lord.
[27] A wise man is cautious in everything,
and in days of sin he guards against wrongdoing.
[28] Every intelligent man knows wisdom,
and he praises the one who finds her.
[29] Those who understand sayings become skilled
themselves,
and pour forth apt proverbs.
[30] Do not follow your base desires,
but restrain your appetites.
[31] If you allow your soul to take pleasure in
base desire,
it will make you the laughingstock of your enemies.
[32] Do not revel in great luxury,
lest you become impoverished by its expense.
[33] Do not become a beggar by feasting with
borrowed money,
when you have nothing in your purse.

[1]영원히 살아 계신 분이 온
우주만물을 창조하셨다.
[2]주님 홀로 의로우신 분임이 드러날
것이며 그분 외에는 아무도 의로운 자가
없다.
[3]주님은 손짓 하나로 세상을
다스리시며 만물은 그 뜻에 복종한다.
그분은 만물의 왕이시며 그 권능으로
거룩한 것과 속된 것을 가르치신다.
[4]누가 주님의 대업을 선포할 권한을
받았더냐?
또 누가 그분의 오묘한 길을
알아 낼 수 있다더냐?
[5]누가 그분의 위력을 헤아릴 수
있으랴?
하물며 그분의 풍성한 자비를 나
표현할 수 있으랴?
[6]아무도 주님의 하시는 일에 덜할
수도,
더할 수도 없고 아무도 주님의
신비하심을 알아 낼 수 없다.
[7]사람이 모두 마쳤다고 생각했을 때
그것은 시작에 불과하며 이제는 다
알았다고 생각하면 더욱 몰라진다.
[8]인간이란 무엇인가?
무슨 쓸모가
있는가?
인간이 잘하면 얼마나 잘하며
더구나 그 잘못이야 어디에다 쓰랴?
[9]인간의 수명은 기껏 산대도 백
년을 넘지 못한다.
[10]인간이 사는 그 몇 해를 영원에
비하면 대양의 물 한 방울이요 백사장의
모래 한 알이다.
[11]주님이 인간들을 오래 참아
주시는 이유가 여기에 있다.
인간에게
자비를 쏟아 주시는 이유가 또한 여기에
있다.
[12]주님은 인간의 말로가 얼마나
비참한가를 보고 알고 계신다.
그래서 더
많은 용서를 베푸신다.
[13]인간의 동정심은 그의 이웃에게만
미치지만 주님의 자비는 모든 인간에게
미친다.
그래서 주님은 꾸짖으시고 고쳐
주시고 가르치시며 목자가 양떼를 몰듯,
인간을 제 길로 인도하신다.
[14]주님은 당신의 가르침을 받아
들이는 사람들과 계명을 열심히 지키는
사람들에게 자비를 베푸신다.
[15]내 말을 들어라,
남에게 적선을
하면서 욕설을 퍼붓지 말고 선물을 하면서
듣기 싫은 소리를 덧붙이지 말아라.
[16]밤이슬이 찌는 듯한 더위를 식혀
주지 않느냐?
처럼 말 한 마디가 선물보다
값지다.
[17]친절한 말 한마디가 값진
선물보다 더 낫지 않느냐?
그런데
너그러운 사람은 이 두 가지를 다 갖춘다.
[18]어리석은 자는 주지도 않으면서
남을 욕하고 인색한 자는 선물을 주고도
남을 울린다.
[19]말하기 전에 배워라.
병나기 전에
몸조심하여라.
[20]심판대에 나가기 전에 먼저
반성하여라.
그러면 주님께서 찾아 오실
때 용서받으리라.
[21]병들기 전에 겸손하여라.
그리고
죄를 짓게 되거든 곧 회개하여라.
[22]네가 다짐한 치성은 무슨 일이
있어도 제때에 이행하여라.
미루다가는
죽는 날까지 이행치 못한다.
[23]치성을 드리기 전에 스스로
준비를 갖추어라.
주님을 떠보는 자와
같은 행동을 하지 말아라.
[24]마지막 날에 내릴 주님의 분노를
생각하고 갚음의 날에 너를 외면하실
주님을 생각하여라.
[25]배부를 때에는 배고픈 때를
생각하고 돈이 많은 때는 가난과 궁핍을
생각하여라.
[26]아침에서 저녁까지 시간은 흐르고
주님 앞에 만물은 하루살이다.
[27]지혜로운 사람은 만사에 조심하고
죄악의 시대에도 죄를 피하려고 노력한다.
[28]현명한 사람은 지혜를 알아 보고
지혜를 찾은 사람을 존경한다.
[29]말을 현명하게 하는 사람들은
지혜를 쌓아 훌륭한 격언들을 비처럼 뿌려
놓는다.
[30]네 정욕을 따라 가지 말고 네
욕망을 억제하여라.
[31]네 욕심을 채우려고 하다가는
원수들의 웃음거리가 되고 만다.
[32]쾌락의 생활에 빠지지 말고 또
그러한 무리에 섞이지도 말아라.
[33]네 호주머니 속에 아무 든 것이
없으면서 돈을 꾸어다 잔치를 베풀지
말아라,
알거지가 되리라.

Sir.19
[1] A workman who is a drunkard will not become
rich;
he who despises small things will fail little by little.
[2] Wine and women lead intelligent men astray,
and the man who consorts with harlots is very reckless.
[3] Decay and worms will inherit him,
and the reckless soul will be snatched away.
[4] One who trusts others too quickly is
lightminded,
and one who sins does wrong to himself.
[5] One who rejoices in wickedness will be
condemned,
[6] and for one who hates gossip evil is
lessened.
[7] Never repeat a conversation,
and you will lose nothing at all.
[8] With friend or foe do not report it,
and unless it would be a sin for you, do not disclose
it;
[9] for some one has heard you and watched you,
and when the time comes he will hate you.
[10] Have you heard a word? Let it die with you.
Be brave! It will not make you burst!
[11] With such a word a fool will suffer pangs
like a woman in labor with a child.
[12] Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the
thigh,
so is a word inside a fool.
[13] Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it;
but if he did anything, so that he may do it no more.
[14] Question a neighbor, perhaps he did not say
it;
but if he said it, so that he may not say it again.
[15] Question a friend, for often it is slander;
so do not believe everything you hear.
[16] A person may make a slip without intending
it.
Who has never sinned with his tongue?
[17] Question your neighbor before you threaten
him;
and let the law of the Most High take its course.
[20] All wisdom is the fear of the Lord,
and in all wisdom there is the fulfilment of the law.
[22] But the knowledge of wickedness is not
wisdom,
nor is there prudence where sinners take counsel.
[23] There is a cleverness which is abominable,
but there is a fool who merely lacks wisdom.
[24] Better is the God-fearing man who lacks
intelligence,
than the highly prudent man who transgresses the law.
[25] There is a cleverness which is scrupulous
but unjust,
and there are people who distort kindness to gain a
verdict.
[26] There is a rascal bowed down in mourning,
but inwardly he is full of deceit.
[27] He hides his face and pretends not to hear;
but where no one notices, he will forestall you.
[28] And if by lack of strength he is prevented
from sinning,
he will do evil when he finds an opportunity.
[29] A man is known by his appearance,
and a sensible man is known by his face, when you meet
him.
[30] A man's attire and open-mouthed laughter,
and a man's manner of walking, show what he is.

장
[1]술 취하는 노동자는 부자가 될 수
없고 작은 것을 멸시하는 자는 점점
가난해진다.
[2]술과 여자는 현명한 사람을 망치고
창녀에 바진 자는 염치를 모르게 된다.
[3]그의 몸은 썩고 구더기가 슬어서
마침내 그 영혼은 파멸에 이른다.
[4]사람을 쉽게 믿는 것은
경박스러움의 표시이며 죄를 짓는 것은
자학행위다.
[5]악을 즐기는 자는 징벌을 자초할
것이고
[6]수다를 피하는 사람은 재난을
면한다.
[7]남의 말을 옮기지 말아라.
그러면
해를 입지 않으리라.
[8]친구에게든 원수에게든 남의 말을
옮기지 말아라.
입을 다무는 것이 죄가
되기 전에는 들은 말을 누설하지 말아라.
[9]네가 수다를 떨면,
남이 너를
경계할 것이며 경우에 따라서는 너를
미워하게 될 것이다.
[10]무슨 말을 듣거든 마음 속에 묻어
버려라.
그 말이 터져 나올 리 없으니
조금도 걱정할 것이 없다.
[11]어리석은 자는 무슨 말을 들으면
옮기지 못하여 산고를 치르는 여자처럼
고통을 느낀다.
[12]어리석은 자는 말을 옮기지
못하면 넙적다리에 화살을 맞은 양 못
견뎌 한다.
[13]네 친구를 찾아 가서 무슨 소문이
나지 않도록 충고하고 잘못이 있으면
거듭하지 말도록 타일러라.
[14]네 이웃을 찾아 가서 함부로 말을
퍼뜨리지 말도록 권고하고 이미 말한 일이
있으면 거듭하지 말도록 타일러라.
[15]네 친구가 무고하게 중상을 받을
수도 있으니,
가서 직접 물어 보아라.
그리고 소문대로 다 믿지 말아라.
[16]사람은 가끔 악의없이 말실수를
하는 수가 있다.
말로 죄를 짓지 않는
사람이 어디 있으랴?
[17]네 이웃을 비난하기 전에 직접
만나서 알아 보아라.
그리고 지극히
높으신 분의 율법에 맡겨라.
[18]주님을 두려워함은 주님의 용서를
받는 첫걸음이며 지혜는 주님의 사랑을
받는다.
주님의 계명을 아는 것이 생활의
법도요,
[19]주님의 계명을 아는 것이 생활의
법도요,
주님께서 기뻐하시는 일을 하는
사람은 불멸의 나무에서 열매를 딴다.
[20]주님을 두려워함은 지혜의
전부이며 율법의 완성이 그 속에 있다.
또
주님의 전능을 아는 것도 그 속에 있다.
[21]어떤 하인이 자기 주인에게 "나는
주인님이 시키는 대로 하지 않겠소"
하고 말했다면 설사 그가 후에 그 일을
했다 하더라도 그를 먹여 살리는 주인은
노할 것이다.
[22]나쁜 것을 아는 것은 지혜가
아니요 죄인들의 의견은 현명할 수가 없다.
[23]너무 영리해서 오히려 가증스러운
자가 있고 단순히 무식한 까닭으로 바보
취급을 당하는 자가 있다.
[24]무식하지만 하느님을 두려워하는
것이 유식하면서 율법을 어기는 것보다
훨씬 낫다.
[25]처세에 영리해서 오히려 불의한
인간이 있으니,
이런 자는 자기 권익을
위해서만 일을 도모한다.
[26]슬픈 얼굴로 허리를 굽히고
다니는 자가 있다.
그러나 그의 마음 속은
사기로 가득 차 있다.
[27]이런 자는 아무 것도 안 보고 아무
것도 못 듣는 체하지만 보는 사람이
없으면 너를 덮칠 것이다.
[28]또 어떤 사람은 힘이 모자라서
죄도 못 지을 것 같지만 나쁜 짓을 할
기회만 있으면 놓치지 않는다.
[29]사람은 외모에 그 사람됨이
드러나는데,
지혜로운 사람은 얼굴에
그것이 나타난다.
[30]옷차림과 웃는 모습,
그리고
걸음걸이는 그의 인품을 나타낸다.

[1] There is a reproof which is not timely;
and there is a man who keeps silent but is wise.
[2] How much better it is to reprove than to stay
angry!
And the one who confesses his fault will be kept from
loss.
[4] Like a eunuch's desire to violate a maiden
is a man who executes judgments by violence.
[5] There is one who by keeping silent is found
wise,
while another is detested for being too talkative.
[6] There is one who keeps silent because he has
no answer,
while another keeps silent because he knows when to
speak.
[7] A wise man will be silent until the right
moment,
but a braggart and fool goes beyond the right moment.
[8] Whoever uses too many words will be loathed,
and whoever usurps the right to speak will be hated.
[9] There may be good fortune for a man in
adversity,
and a windfall may result in a loss.
[10] There is a gift that profits you nothing,
and there is a gift that brings a double return.
[11] There are losses because of glory,
and there are men who have raised their heads
from humble circumstances.
[12] There is a man who buys much for a little,
but pays for it seven times over.
[13] The wise man makes himself beloved through
his words,
but the courtesies of fools are wasted.
[14] A fool's gift will profit you nothing,
for he has many eyes instead of one.
[15] He gives little and upbraids much,
he opens his mouth like a herald;
today he lends and tomorrow he asks it back;
such a one is a hateful man.
[16] A fool will say, "I have no friend,
and there is no gratitude for my good deeds;
those who eat my bread speak unkindly."
[17] How many will ridicule him, and how often!
[18] A slip on the pavement is better than a slip
of the tongue;
so the downfall of the wicked will occur speedily.
[19] An ungracious man is like a story told at
the wrong time,
which is continually on the lips of the ignorant.
[20] A proverb from a fool's lips will be
rejected,
for he does not tell it at its proper time.
[21] A man may be prevented from sinning by his
poverty,
so when he rests he feels no remorse.
[22] A man may lose his life through shame,
or lose it because of his foolish look.
[23] A man may for shame make promises to a
friend,
and needlessly make him an enemy.
[24] A lie is an ugly blot on a man;
it is continually on the lips of the ignorant.
[25] A thief is preferable to a habitual liar,
but the lot of both is ruin.
[26] The disposition of a liar brings disgrace,
and his shame is ever with him.
[27] He who speaks wisely will advance himself,
and a sensible man will please great men.
[28] Whoever cultivates the soil will heap up his
harvest,
and whoever pleases great men will atone for injustice.
[29] Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the
wise;
like a muzzle on the mouth they avert reproofs.
[30] Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure,
what advantage is there in either of them?
[31] Better is the man who hides his folly
than the man who hides his wisdom.

[1]때에 맞지 않는 책망이 있고
현명함을 드러내 주는 침묵이 있다.
[2]분노를 참기보다는 이를 터뜨리는
편이 얼마나 더 나으냐?
잘못을 인정하면
벌을 면할 수 있다.
[3]미리 잘못을 인정하여 뉘우쳐서
닥쳐 오는 죄를 피하는 것이 얼마나 좋은
일인가!
[4]폭력으로 옳은 일을 하려고 하는
자는 내시가 처녀를 범하려는 것과 같다.
[5]침묵을 지켜 현명함이 드러나는
사람이 있는가 하면 끊임없이
지껄임으로써 남에게 미움을 사는 사람도
있다.
[6]대답을 못해서 침묵을 지키는
사람이 있는가 하면 대답할 때를 기다려
침묵을 지키는 사람이 있다.
[7]지혜로운 사람은 때가 오기까지
침묵을 지키나 어리석은 사람은 때를
분간하지 못하고 수다를 떤다.
[8]너무 수다를 떠는 자는 남의
빈축을 사고 말로 남을 누르려는 자는
남의 미움을 받는다.
[9]불행 속에서 행복을 얻는 수가
있고 횡재가 가끔 큰 손실로 변하는 수도
있다.
[10]선심을 베풀어도 너에게 아무
이익이 없는 수가 있고 두 배의 이익이
돌아 오는 수도 있다.
[11]영예가 오히려 패가망신의 원인이
되는 수가 있고 천한 신분에서 높은
자리를 차지하는 사람도 있다.
[12]어떤 이는 싼값으로 많은 물건을
산 줄 알지만,
사실은 일 곱 배나 더 비싼
값을 치르고 있다.
[13]지혜로운 사람은 말로도 남의
호감을 사지만 어리석은 사람은 호감을
사려고 여러 말을 해도 허사다.
[14]어리석은 자의 선물은 너에게
아무런 소용이 없다.
그의 눈은 그보다 더
많은 것이 돌아 올 것을 기대하고 있다.
[15]그는 조금 주면서 잔소리가
많으며 약장수처럼 동네방네 떠들어대고
오늘 꾸어 주고 내일이면 갚으라고 하니
얼마나 가증스런 인간이냐?
[16]어리석은 자는 말하기를 "나는
친구가 없다.
내가 친절을 베풀어도
고맙다는 말 한 마디 못 듣고
[17]내 밥을 먹고도 내 욕만 한다"
고 한다.
그래서 또 얼마나 많은 사람이
그를 빈번히 비웃는가?
[18]실언하기보다는 길에서 넘어지는
편이 더 낫다.
저렇듯이 악인은 한 순간에
망한다.
[19]불쾌하게 구는 자는 때에 맞지
않는 이야기를 즐기며 끊임없이 조악한
말을 지껄인다.
[20]바보의 말은 아무리 훌륭해도
듣는 사람이 없다.
때를 가리지 않고 마구
말하기 때문이다.
[21]어떤 사람은 가난하기 때문에
죄를 짓지 않는다.
그는 편안한 마음으로
쉴 수 있을 것이다.
[22]어떤 사람은 체면을 지키다가
일신을 망치며 또 어리석은 자의 눈치를
보다가 자신을 망치기도 한다.
[23]어떤 사람은 체면 때문에
친구에게 많은 약속을 했다가 공연히 그와
원수가 된다.
[24]거짓말은 사람의 큰 오점이며
무식한 자들은 이것을 다반사로 여긴다.
[25]언제나,
거짓말만 하는 자보다는
도둑이 더 낫다.
그러나 이 둘은 다
멸망한다.
[26]거짓말장이의 소득은 치욕뿐이며,
그가 받는 불명예는 한이 없다.
[27]지혜로운 사람은 말로써 스스로의
품위를 높이며 총명한 사람은 웃사람의
환심을 산다.
[28]땅을 가는 사람은 좋은 수확을
거두게 되고 웃사람의 환심을 산 사람은
잘못도 용서를 받게 된다.
[29]선물과 뇌물은 지혜로운 사람을
눈멀게 하고 입에 물린 재갈처럼 비난하는
입을 틀어 막는다.
[30]감추어진 지혜와 숨겨 둔 보물,
둘
다 무슨 소용인가?
[31]자기 지혜를 감추는 사람보다는
자기 어리석음을 감추는 사람이 더 낫다. |
