Foreword

[1-14] Whereas many great teachings have been given to us through the law and the prophets and the others that followed them, on account of which we should praise Israel for instruction and wisdom; and since it is necessary not only that the readers themselves should acquire understanding but also that those who love learning should be able to help the outsiders by both speaking and writing, my grandfather Jesus, after devoting himself especially to the reading of the law and the prophets and the other books of our fathers, and after acquiring considerable proficiency in them, was himself also led to write something pertaining to instruction and wisdom, in order that, by becoming conversant with this also, those who love learning should make even greater progress in living according to the law.
[15-26] You are urged therefore to read with good will and attention, and to be indulgent in cases where, despite out diligent labor in translating, we may seem to have rendered some phrases imperfectly. For what was originally expressed in Hebrew does not have exactly the same sense when translated into another language. Not only this work, but even the law itself, the prophecies, and the rest of the books differ not a little as originally expressed.
[27-36] When I came to Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Euergetes and stayed for some time, I found opportunity for no little instruction. It seemed highly necessary that I should myself devote some pains and labor to the translation of the following book, using in that period of time great watchfulness and skill in order to complete and publish the book for those living abroad who wished to gain learning, being prepared in character to live according to the law.

[1-14] 율법과 선지자들 및 후대의 저자들이 우리에게 많은 귀중한 가르침을 남겨 주었으니,이렇게 주어진 가르침과 지혜에 대하여 이스라엘을 찬미하여야 할 것이다; 그리하여  독자들이 깨달음을 얻어야 할 뿐만 아니라, 배움을 사랑하는 사람들은 말과 글로서 다른 사람들을 도울 수 있어야 할 것이다. 이것이 나의 조부이신 예수가, 율법과 선지자들과 다른 저자들의 책들의 독서에 헌신하였던 이유이며, 그것들을 숙달한 뒤에, 자신의 지혜와 지식을 다른 사람들과 나눌 수 있도록 책을 쓰게 되었으며, 그리하여 그의 지식에 대한 사랑을 공유하는 사람은 누구라도 이 책을 쉽게 이용할 수 있으며, 율법에 따라서 살아감이 더욱 용이하도록 한 것이다.
[15-26] 그러므로, 이 책을 주의 깊게 그리고 열린 마음으로 읽을 것을 강권하노라. 그리고, 나의 모든 부지런한 노력들에도 불구하고, 어떤 곳에서는 어떤 구절들을 적절하게 번역하지 못하였을 지라도, 인내를 가지라. 원래 히브리어로 기록된 것이 다른 언어로 번역되었을 때는, 언제나 똑같은 의미를 가지는 것이 아니다. 그러함은 정녕 이 책에서 뿐만 아니라, 율법 자체, 선지자들 및 다른 책들도 마찬가지이리라. 번역본들을 원전과는 심히 다를 수가 있다.
[27-36] 나는 유게르테의 집권 38년에 이집트에 왔으며, 잠시 머룰렀다. 내가 그곳에 있는 동안, 상당히 많은 학문의 기회를 가졌으며, 다음의 책을 번역할 필요를 느꼈다. 나는 이것을 완성하기 위하여 나의 모든 근면함능력을 다하여서, 배우기를 원하며, 글의 힘으로 모세의 율법에 따라 살수 있는 모든 외국 땅에 사는 사람들이 이용할 수 있기를 기대하였다.

[1] All wisdom comes from the Lord and is with him for ever.
[2] The sand of the sea, the drops of rain, and the days of eternity -- who can count them?
[3] The height of heaven, the breadth of the earth, the abyss, and wisdom -- who can search them out?
[4] Wisdom was created before all things, and prudent understanding from eternity.
[5] The root of wisdom -- to whom has it been revealed? Her clever devices -- who knows them?
[6] There is One who is wise, greatly to be feared, sitting upon his throne.
[7] The Lord himself created wisdom; he saw her and apportioned her, he poured her out upon all his works.
[8] She dwells with all flesh according to his gift,
and he supplied her to those who love him. 
[9] The fear of the Lord is glory and exultation, and gladness and a crown of rejoicing.
[10] The fear of the Lord delights the heart, and gives gladness and joy and long life.
[11] With him who fears the Lord it will go well at the end; on the day of his death he will be blessed.
[12] To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; she is created with the faithful in the womb.
[13] She made among men an eternal foundation, and among their descendants she will be trusted.
[14] To fear the Lord is wisdom's full measure; she satisfies men with her fruits;
[15] she fills their whole house with desirable goods, and their storehouses with her produce.
[16] The fear of the Lord is the crown of wisdom, making peace and perfect health to flourish.
[17] He saw her and apportioned her; he rained down knowledge and discerning comprehension, and he exalted the glory of those who held her fast.
[18] To fear the Lord is the root of wisdom, and her branches are long life. 
[22] Unrighteous anger cannot be justified, for a man's anger tips the scale to his ruin.
[23] A patient man will endure until the right moment, and then joy will burst forth for him.
[24] He will hide his words until the right moment, and the lips of many will tell of his good sense.
[25] In the treasuries of wisdom are wise sayings, but godliness is an abomination to a sinner.
[26] If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will supply it for you.
[27] For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction, and he delights in fidelity and meekness.
[28] Do not disobey the fear of the Lord; do not approach him with a divided mind.
[29] Be not a hypocrite in men's sight, and keep watch over your lips.
[30] Do not exalt yourself lest you fall, and thus bring dishonor upon yourself. The Lord will reveal your secrets and cast you down in the midst of the congregation, because you did not come in the fear of the Lord, and your heart was full of deceit.

[1]모든 지혜는 주님께로부터 오며 언제나 주님과 함께 있다.
[2]바다의 모래와 빗방울과 영원의 나날을 누가 셈할 수 있으랴?
[3]하늘의 높이와 땅의 넓이와 땅 속의 깊이를 누가 잴 수 있으랴?
[4]지혜는 저 모든 것들보다 먼저 창조되었으며 현명한 이해 역시 태초로부터 있다.
[5]지혜의 근원은 하늘에 계신 하느님의 말씀이며 지혜의 길은 영원한 법칙이다.
[6]지혜의 근원을 누가 밝히 알아 냈으며 그 오묘한 기획을 깨달은 자 누구냐?
[7]지혜를 밝히 깨달은 자는 아무도 없으며 그 지혜의 풍부함을 이해하고 완전히 따른 자도 없다.
[8]지혜로우신 분은 오직 한 분, 두려우신 분이시며 당신의 옥좌에 앉아 계신 분이시다.
[9]그분은 지혜를 만드시고 지켜 보시고 헤아리시는 주님으로서 당신이 만드신 모든 것과,
[10]모든 인간에게 지혜를 너그러이 내리시고 특히 당신을 사랑하는 사람들에게 지혜를 풍부히 나누어 주신다.
[11]주님을 두려워함은 행복이요, 영예며 쾌락이요 환희의 극치이다.
[12]주님을 두려워하는 이는 마음이 즐겁고 행복과 희열을 맛보며 수를 누린다.
[13]주님을 두려워하는 이는 삶의 끝이 좋으리니 죽는 날에 축복을 받으리라.
[14]주님을 두려워함이 지혜의 시작이며, 신심이 있는 사람들은 모태에서부터 지혜를 타고 난다.
[15]지혜는 사람들 사이에 보금자리를 틀어 영원한 터전을 삼고 그들의 후대에도 그 곳에서 안식한다.
[16]주님을 두려워함이 지혜의 성숙이며 지혜는 그 열매로 사람들을 흡족케 한다.
[17]지혜는 그들의 집안을 재물로 그득차게 하고 그들의 곳간을 곡물로 채워 준다.
[18]주님을 두려워함이 지혜의 완성이며 지혜는 삶의 번영과 건강의 꽃을 피운다.
[19]지혜는 지식과 총명을 비처럼 내려 주고 지혜를 간직한는 사람들의 영광을 드높인다.
[20]지혜는 주님을 두려워함에 그 뿌리를 박고 가지들이 싱싱하게 돋아나 영원히 산다.
[21]주님을 두려워하면 죄를 물리칠 수 있고 주님을 두려워하면 분노를 멀리할 수 있다.
[22]의롭지 못한 분노는 변명할 길 없으리니 분노에 치닫다 보면 멸망에 이른다.
[23]인내력을 가진 사람이 잘 견디면 마침내는 큰 기쁨을 누리리라.
[24]그는 말도 잘 참아서, 끝내 그의 총명이 모든 이로부터 찬양을 받으리라.
[25]지혜의 보고 안에는 현인들의 격언이 차 있지만 죄인들에게는 경건한 교훈이 오히려 지겹다.
[26]지혜를 원하거든 계명을 지켜라 주님께서 지혜를 주시리라.
[27]주님을 두려워함이 곧 지혜이며 교양이요, 주님이 기뻐하시는 것은 신실과 온순이다.
[28]주님 두려워하기를 게을리 하지 말라. 주님을 두려워하되 안팎이 같아야 한다.
[29]사람들 앞에서 위선을 행하지 말고 네 입술을 조심하여라.
[30]자신을 치켜 올리지 말아라, 떨어져서 망신당할까 두렵다. 주님이 너의 비밀을 폭로하실 것이고, 너를 사람들 앞에서 넘어지게 하실 것이다. 네가 주님을 두려워하지 않았고 그 마음이 거짓으로 가득 차 있기 때문이다.

　

Sir.2

[1] My son, if you come forward to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for temptation.
[2] Set your heart right and be steadfast, and do not be hasty in time of calamity.
[3] Cleave to him and do not depart, that you may be honored at the end of your life.
[4] Accept whatever is brought upon you, and in changes that humble you be patient.
[5] For gold is tested in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of humiliation.
[6] Trust in him, and he will help you; make your ways straight, and hope in him. 
[7] You who fear the Lord, wait for his mercy; and turn not aside, lest you fall.
[8] You who fear the Lord, trust in him, and your reward will not fail;
[9] you who fear the Lord, hope for good things, for everlasting joy and mercy.
[10] Consider the ancient generations and see: who ever trusted in the Lord and was put to shame? Or who ever persevered in the fear of the Lord and was forsaken? Or who ever called upon him and was overlooked?
[11] For the Lord is compassionate and merciful; he forgives sins and saves in time of affliction. 
[12] Woe to timid hearts and to slack hands, and to the sinner who walks along two ways!
[13] Woe to the faint heart, for it has no trust! Therefore it will not be sheltered.
[14] Woe to you who have lost your endurance!
What will you do when the Lord punishes you?
[15] Those who fear the Lord will not disobey his words, and those who love him will keep his ways.
[16] Those who fear the Lord will seek his approval, and those who love him will be filled with the law.
[17] Those who fear the Lord will prepare their hearts, and will humble themselves before him.
[18] Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, but not into the hands of men; for as his majesty is, so also is his mercy. 

　

2 장

 [1]아들아, 네가 주님을 섬기려면 스스로 시련에 대비하여라.
[2]네 마음을 곧게 가져 동요하지 말며 역경에 처해서도 당황하지 말아라.
[3]영광스러운 마지막 날을 맞이하기 위하여 주님께 매달려, 떨어지지 말아라.
[4]어떠한 일이 닥치더라도 기꺼이 받아 들이고 네 처지가 불쌍하게 되더라도 참고 견디어라.
[5]실로 황금은 불 속에서 단련되고 사람은 굴욕의 화덕에서 단련되어 하느님을 기쁘게 한다.
[6]네가 주님을 신뢰하면 주님께서 너를 보살펴 주시리라. 주님께 희망을 두고 바른 길을 가거라.
[7]주님을 두려워하는 사람들아, 그분의 자비를 기다려라. 빗나가지 말아라, 넘어질까 두렵다.
[8]주님을 두려워하는 사람들아, 그분을 신뢰하여라. 그러면 반드시 상금을 받으리라.
[9]주님을 두려워하는 사람들아, 행복과 영원한 기쁨과 자비에 희망을 두어라.
[10]옛 사람들을 돌이켜 보면 알리라. 주님을 믿어 망신을 당한 사람이 있으며 꾸준히 주님을 두려워하고도 버림을 받은 사람이 있으며 주님께 호소하였다가 거절당한 사람이 있느냐?
[11]주님은 동정심이 많으시고 자비로우시므로 죄를 용서해 주시고, 고난을 당할 대에 구해 주신다.
[12]비겁하고 나태한 자는 화를 입으리라. 두 길을 가는 죄인도 화를 입으리라.
[13]낙심하는 자는 화를 입으리니, 하느님을 믿지 아니하므로 보호를 받지 못하리라.
[14]인내심을 저버린 자들은 화를 입으리라. 주님께서 오시는 날에 어떻게 하려느냐?
[15]주님을 두려워하는 사람들은 그분의 말씀을 순종하고 주님을 사랑하는 사람들은 그분의 계명을 지킨다.
[16]주님을 두려워하는 사람들은 그분의 마음에 들도록 애쓰며 주님을 사랑하는 사람들은 그분의 율법으로 만족하리라.
[17]주님을 두려워하는 사람들은 언제나 시련에 대비하고 그분 앞에 겸손할 줄을 알며 이렇게 말하리라.
[18]"우리는 자신을 인간의 손에 내맡기지 말고 주님의 손에 맡기자. 그분은 위엄도 크시고 자비도 크시다."

　

Sir.3

[1] Listen to me your father, O children;
and act accordingly, that you may be kept in safety.
[2] For the Lord honored the father above the children, and he confirmed the right of the mother over her sons.
[3] Whoever honors his father atones for sins,
[4] and whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure.
[5] Whoever honors his father will be gladdened
by his own children, and when he prays he will be heard.
[6] Whoever glorifies his father will have long life, and whoever obeys the Lord will refresh his mother;
[7] he will serve his parents as his masters.
[8] Honor your father by word and deed, that a blessing from him may come upon you.
[9] For a father's blessing strengthens the houses of the children, but a mother's curse uproots their foundations.
[10] Do not glorify yourself by dishonoring your father, for your father's dishonor is no glory to you.
[11] For a man's glory comes from honoring his father, and it is a disgrace for children not to respect their mother.
[12] O son, help your father in his old age,
and do not grieve him as long as he lives;
[13] even if he is lacking in understanding, show forbearance; in all your strength do not despise him.
[14] For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, and against your sins it will be credited to you;
[15] in the day of your affliction it will be remembered in your favor; as frost in fair weather, your sins will melt away.
[16] Whoever forsakes his father is like a blasphemer, and whoever angers his mother is cursed by the Lord. 
[17] My son, perform your tasks in meekness; then you will be loved by those whom God accepts.
[18] The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself; so you will find favor in the sight of the Lord.
[20] For great is the might of the Lord; he is glorified by the humble.
[21] Seek not what is too difficult for you, nor investigate what is beyond your power.
[22] Reflect upon what has been assigned to you, for you do not need what is hidden.
[23] Do not meddle in what is beyond your tasks, for matters too great for human understanding have been shown you.
[24] For their hasty judgment has led many astray, and wrong opinion has caused their thoughts to slip. 
[26] A stubborn mind will be afflicted at the end, and whoever loves danger will perish by it.
[27] A stubborn mind will be burdened by troubles, and the sinner will heap sin upon sin.
[28] The affliction of the proud has no healing, for a plant of wickedness has taken root in him.
[29] The mind of the intelligent man will ponder a parable, and an attentive ear is the wise man's desire.
[30] Water extinguishes a blazing fire: so almsgiving atones for sin.
[31] Whoever requites favors gives thought to the future; at the moment of his falling he will find support.

　

3 장

 [1]너희는 들어라, 내가 자녀의 본분에 대해서 말하리니 내 말을 듣고 실천하면 구원을 받으리라.
[2]주님께서는 자식들에게 아비를 공경하게 하셨고 또한 어미의 권위를 보장해 주셨다.
[3]아비를 공경하는 것은 자기 죄를 벗는 것이며
[4]어미를 공경하는 것은 보화를 쌓아 올리는 것이다.
[5]아비를 공경하는 사람은 자기 자식들에게서 기쁨을 얻고 그가 기구하는 것을 주님께서 들어 주시리라.
[6]아비를 공경하는 사람은 오래 살 것이며 주님께 순종하는 사람은 어미를 평안케 한다.
[7](주님을 두려워하는 사람은 아비를 공경하며) 하인이 주인을 섬기듯이 자기 어버이를 섬길 것이다.
[8]말과 행실로 네 아비를 공경하여라. 그러면 그의 축복을 받으리라.
[9]아비의 축복은 그 자녀의 집안을 흥하게 하고 어미의 원망은 그 집안을 뒤엎는다.
[10]네 아비를 가벼이 여기거나 자기 자랑을 하지 말아라. 네 아비의 불명예가 어찌 너의 명예가 되겠느냐?
[11]아비의 명예는 자식의 영광이며 어미의 불명예는 자식의 치욕이다.
[12]너는 네 아비가 늙었을 때 잘 보살피고 그가 살아 있는 동안 슬프게 하지 말아라.
[13]그가 설혹 노망을 부리더라도 잘 참아 받고 네가 젊고 힘있다고 해서 그를 업신여기지 말아라.
[14]아비를 잘 섬긴 공은 잊혀지지 않으리니 네 죄는 용서받고 새 삶을 이룰 것이다.
[15]네가 역경에 처했을 대 주님께서는 너의 효도를 기억하시겠고 네 죄는 얼음이 햇볕에 녹듯이 스러질 것이다.
[16]자기 아비를 저버리는 것은 하느님을 모독 하는 것이요 어미를 노엽게 하는 것은 주님의 저주를 부르는 것이다.
[17]너는 들어라, 매사를 유순하게 처리하여라. 그러면 하느님께서 인정하시는 사람들에게 사랑을 받으리라.
[18]훌륭하게 되면 될수록 더욱더 겸손하여라. 주님의 은총을 받으리라.
[19]세상에는 높고 귀한 사람이 많다. 그러나 하느님은 당신의 오묘함을 겸손한 사람에게만 드러내신다.
[20]주님의 능력은 위대하시니 비천한 사람들에 의하여 그 영광은 빛난다.
[21]네가 감당하지 못할 것을 구하지 말고 네 힘에 겨운 것을 좇지 말아라.
[22]하느님께서 너에게 명령한 일에만 전념하고 알려 주시지 않은 일을 캐내려고 애쓰지 말아라.
[23]힘에 겨운 것을 위하여 헛수고를 하지 말아라. 하느님은 이미 인간의 이해력에 넘칠 정도로 너에게 알려 주셨다.
[24]많은 사람들이 자기를 과신하여 미혹에 빠졌고 그 망상 때문에 정도에서 벗어났다.
[25]눈이 멀고서야 어찌 빛을 보랴? 자신도 모르면서 남을 설득하려 들지 말아라.
[26]완고한 자는 마침내 낭패할 것이며 모험을 좋아하는 자는 모험으로 망할 것이다.
[27]완고한 사람은 고통에 허덕이겠고 죄인은 죄 위에 죄를 겹칠 것이다.
[28]오만한 자의 불행에는 약이 없으니 악의 뿌리가 그에게 깊이 박혀 잇는 까닭이다.
[29]총명한 사람은 격언의 뜻을 되새기고 지혜로운 사람은 귀 기울여 남의 말을 듣는다.
[30]물은 뜨거운 불을 끄고 자선은 죄를 없앤다.
[31]은혜를 갚는 사람은 미래를 생각하는 사람이다. 그가 넘어질 대에 도움을 얻으리라.

　

Sir.4

[1] My son, deprive not the poor of his living,
and do not keep needy eyes waiting.
[2] Do not grieve the one who is hungry,
nor anger a man in want.
[3] Do not add to the troubles of an angry mind,
nor delay your gift to a beggar.
[4] Do not reject an afflicted suppliant,
nor turn your face away from the poor.
[5] Do not avert your eye from the needy,
nor give a man occasion to curse you;
[6] for if in bitterness of soul he calls down a curse upon you,
his Creator will hear his prayer.

[7] Make yourself beloved in the congregation;
bow your head low to a great man.
[8] Incline your ear to the poor,
and answer him peaceably and gently.
[9] Deliver him who is wronged from the hand of the wrongdoer;
and do not be fainthearted in judging a case.
[10] Be like a father to orphans,
and instead of a husband to their mother;
you will then be like a son of the Most High,
and he will love you more than does your mother.

[11] Wisdom exalts her sons
and gives help to those who seek her.
[12] Whoever loves her loves life,
and those who seek her early will be filled with joy.
[13] Whoever holds her fast will obtain glory,
and the Lord will bless the place she enters.
[14] Those who serve her will minister to the Holy One;
the Lord loves those who love her.
[15] He who obeys her will judge the nations,
and whoever gives heed to her will dwell secure.
[16] If he has faith in her he will obtain her;
and his descendants will remain in possession of her.
[17] For at first she will walk with him on tortuous paths,
she will bring fear and cowardice upon him,
and will torment him by her discipline
until she trusts him,
and she will test him with her ordinances.
[18] Then she will come straight back to him and gladden him,
and will reveal her secrets to him.
[19] If he goes astray she will forsake him,
and hand him over to his ruin.

[20] Observe the right time, and beware of evil;
and do not bring shame on yourself.
[21] For there is a shame which brings sin,
and there is a shame which is glory and favor.
[22] Do not show partiality, to your own harm,
or deference, to your downfall.
[23] Do not refrain from speaking at the crucial time,
and do not hide your wisdom.
[24] For wisdom is known through speech,
and education through the words of the tongue.
[25] Never speak against the truth,
but be mindful of your ignorance.
[26] Do not be ashamed to confess your sins,
and do not try to stop the current of a river.
[27] Do not subject yourself to a foolish fellow,
nor show partiality to a ruler.
[28] Strive even to death for the truth
and the Lord God will fight for you.

[29] Do not be reckless in your speech,
or sluggish and remiss in your deeds.
[30] Do not be like a lion in your home,
nor be a faultfinder with your servants.
[31] Let not your hand be extended to receive,
but withdrawn when it is time to repay.

　

4 장

 [1]너는 들어라, 곤궁한 사람에게 먹을 것을 거절하지 말고 가난한 사람에게 피눈물을 흘리게 하지 말아라.
[2]배고픈 사람을 더 배고프게 하지 말고 굶주림에 허덕이는 사람을 더 고달프게 하지 말아라.
[3]딱한 처지에 놓인 사람을 더 이상 참혹하게 만들지 말고 궁핍한 사람에게 자선 베풀기를 미루지 말아라.
[4]시달리는 사람의 애원을 물리치지 말며 가난한 사람을 외면하지 말아라.
[5]애걸하는 사람에게서 눈을 돌림으로써 남이 너를 저주할 빌미를 갖게 하지 말아라.
[6]그들이 원한을 품고 너를 저주하면 그 소리가 창조주의 귀에 들어 가리라.
[7]너는 가난한 사람들의 존경을 모으고 어른들에게는 순종토록 하여라.
[8]가난한 사람이 하는 말에 귀를 기울이고 그들이 인사하거든 공손히 답례하여라.
[9]압박하는 사람의 손에서 학대받는 사람을 건져 주고 재판석에 앉거든 소신을 굽히지 말아라.
[10]고아들을 아비처럼 대하고 과부들을 남편처럼 보살펴 주어라. 그러면 지극히 높으신 분께서 너를 아들처럼 여기실 것이요 너의 어미보다 더욱 너를 사랑하리라.
[11]지혜는 어미처럼 자녀를 키워 주고 자기를 찾는 사람들을 보살펴 준다.
[12]지혜를 사랑하는 사람은 삶을 사랑하며 지혜를 찾아 부지런한 사람은 기쁨으로 가득차리라.
[13]지혜를 자기 것으로 만든 사람은 주님의 영광을 이어 받겠고 그가 사는 곳에 주님의 축복이 항상 있으리라.
[14]지혜를 경건하게 섬기는 것은 거룩하신 분을 섬기는 것이며 지혜를 사랑하는 사람들은 주님의 사랑을 받게 된다.
[15]지혜에 귀를 기울이는 사람은 공정하게 다스릴 것이며 지혜를 따르는 사람의 삶은 안전하리라.
[16]지혜를 믿는 사람은 지혜를 차지할 것이며 그의 후손들도 지혜를 물려받으리라.
[17]지혜는 처음에 그를 험난한 길로 인도한다. 그를 믿게 될 때까지 법으로 그를 시험하여 무서운 공포심을 안겨 주고 규율로 그를 괴롭힌다.
[18]그러나 지혜는 마침내 그를 평탄한 길로 인도하여 기쁨을 주고 자신의 오묘함을 밝혀 주리라.
[19]만일 사람이 지혜의 길을 빗나가면 지혜는 그를 버리고 멸망의 손에 내맡기리라.
[20]시대를 잘 살펴서 악을 경계하여라. 그리고 너무 소심하지 말아라.
[21]너무 소심하기 때문에 죄에 빠지는 수도 있고 오히려 소심하기 때문에 영광과 은총을 차지하는 수도 있다.
[22]너는 남과 만나서 너무 그 눈치를 보지도 말고 남에게 망신을 주어 스스로 화를 입지도 말아라.
[23]네가 의견을 내야 할 대 잠잠하지 말고 네 지혜를 써야 할 대 감춰 두지도 말아라.
[24]지혜는 의견에서 드러나고 교양은 말투에서 드러난다.
[25]진리에 거슬린 말은 하지 말고 네 무지를 돌이켜 보아라.
[26]네 잘못 고백하기를 부끄러워 말고 물살을 거슬러 헤엄치지 말아라.
[27]어리석은 자에게 굽신거리지 말며 권세있는 자에게 아첨하지 말아라.
[28]죽기까지 진리를 위해 싸우면 주 하느님께서 너를 도와 싸우시리라. 말을 너무 주제넘게 하지 말고
[29]말을 너무 주제넘게 하지 말고 행동에 부실하거나 무성의하지 말아라.
[30]집안에서 사자처럼 되어 하인들을 들볶지 말아라.
[31]네 손을 내밀어 받기만 하지 말고 베풀 때에도 그 손을 거두지 말아라.

　

Sir.5

[1] Do not set your heart on your wealth,
nor say, "I have enough."
[2] Do not follow your inclination and strength,
walking according to the desires of your heart.
[3] Do not say, "Who will have power over me?"
for the Lord will surely punish you.

[4] Do not say, "I sinned, and what happened to me?"
for the Lord is slow to anger.
[5] Do not be so confident of atonement
that you add sin to sin.
[6] Do not say, "His mercy is great,
he will forgive the multitude of my sins,"
for both mercy and wrath are with him,
and his anger rests on sinners.
[7] Do not delay to turn to the Lord,
nor postpone it from day to day;
for suddenly the wrath of the Lord will go forth,
and at the time of punishment you will perish.

[8] Do not depend on dishonest wealth,
for it will not benefit you in the day of calamity.
[9] Do not winnow with every wind,
nor follow every path:
the double-tongued sinner does that.
[10] Be steadfast in your understanding,
and let your speech be consistent.
[11] Be quick to hear,
and be deliberate in answering.
[12] If you have understanding, answer your neighbor;
but if not, put your hand on your mouth.
[13] Glory and dishonor come from speaking,
and a man's tongue is his downfall.

[14] Do not be called a slanderer,
and do not lie in ambush with your tongue;
for shame comes to the thief,
and severe condemnation to the double-tongued.

 [1]너는 재물을 의지하지 말며 "이만하면 족하다" 고 자만하지도 말아라.
[2]네 의욕과 정력만을 믿고서 탐욕에 빠지는 일이 없도록 하여라.
[3]"나를 누를 자가 누구냐?" 고 장담하지 말아라. 주님께서 정녕 너를 벌하시리라.
[4]"내가 죄를 지었지만 아무 탈도 없지 않느냐?" 고 말하지 말아라. 주님께서 오래 참아 주시는 것일 뿐이다.
[5]하느님의 용서만 믿고 방심하면 죄를 짓고 또 짓게 된다.
[6]"주님의 자비가 크시니 내가 아무리 많은 죄를 지어도 용서하시리라" 고 말하지 말아라. 주님은 자비도 베푸시지만 노하시기도 하신다. 한번 노하시면 죄인들이 남아나지 못하리라.
[7]하루하루 미루지 말고 한시 바삐 주님게로 돌아 오너라. 주님의 진노가 언제 떨어질지 모르며 징벌하시는 날에는 네가 멸망하리라.
[8]부정하게 얻은 재물을 의지하지 말아라. 그런 재물은 재난의 날에 아무 소용이 없다.
[9]바람이라고 해서 모두 키질에 이용하지 말고, 길이라고 해서 아무 곳이고 들어 가지 말아라. 그것은 겉과 속이 다른 죄인이 하는 짓이다.
[10]너의 신념을 굳게 지키고 말을 한결같이 하여라.
[11]듣기는 빨리 하고 말하기는 더디 하여라.
[12]네가 알거든 묻는 사람에게 대답하고 모르거든 가만히 있어라.
[13]명예도 불명예도 말에서 나온다. 사람의 혀가 파멸을 가져온다.
[14]남의 험담을 좋아해서 네 혀로 사람을 잡는 일이 없도록 하여라. 도둑이 결국 탄로나듯 겉과 속이 다른 자는 망신을 당하리라.
[15]큰 일에나 작은 일에나 실수하지 말고 친구를 저버려서 원수가 되는 일이 없도록 하여라.

　

Sir.6

[1] and do not become an enemy instead of a friend;
for a bad name incurs shame and reproach:
so fares the double-tongued sinner.

[2] Do not exalt yourself through your soul's counsel,
lest your soul be torn in pieces like a bull.
[3] You will devour your leaves and destroy your fruit,
and will be left like a withered tree.
[4] An evil soul will destroy him who has it,
and make him the laughingstock of his enemies.

[5] A pleasant voice multiplies friends,
and a gracious tongue multiplies courtesies.
[6] Let those that are at peace with you be many,
but let your advisers be one in a thousand.
[7] When you gain a friend, gain him through testing,
and do not trust him hastily.
[8] For there is a friend who is such at his own convenience,
but will not stand by you in your day of trouble.
[9] And there is a friend who changes into an enemy,
and will disclose a quarrel to your disgrace.
[10] And there is a friend who is a table companion,
but will not stand by you in your day of trouble.
[11] In prosperity he will make himself your equal,
and be bold with your servants;
[12] but if you are brought low he will turn against you,
and will hide himself from your presence.
[13] Keep yourself far from your enemies,
and be on guard toward your friends.

[14] A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter:
he that has found one has found a treasure.
[15] There is nothing so precious as a faithful friend,
and no scales can measure his excellence.
[16] A faithful friend is an elixir of life;
and those who fear the Lord will find him.
[17] Whoever fears the Lord directs his friendship aright,
for as he is, so is his neighbor also.

[18] My son, from your youth up choose instruction,
and until you are old you will keep finding wisdom.
[19] Come to her like one who plows and sows,
and wait for her good harvest.
For in her service you will toil a little while,
and soon you will eat of her produce.
[20] She seems very harsh to the uninstructed;
a weakling will not remain with her.
[21] She will weigh him down like a heavy testing stone,
and he will not be slow to cast her off.
[22] For wisdom is like her name,
and is not manifest to many.

[23] Listen, my son, and accept my judgment;
do not reject my counsel.
[24] Put your feet into her fetters,
and your neck into her collar.
[25] Put your shoulder under her and carry her,
and do not fret under her bonds.
[26] Come to her with all your soul,
and keep her ways with all your might.
[27] Search out and seek, and she will become known to you;
and when you get hold of her, do not let her go.
[28] For at last you will find the rest she gives,
and she will be changed into joy for you.
[29] Then her fetters will become for you a strong protection,
and her collar a glorious robe.
[30] Her yoke is a golden ornament,
and her bonds are a cord of blue.
[31] You will wear her like a glorious robe,
and put her on like a crown of gladness.

[32] If you are willing, my son, you will be taught,
and if you apply yourself you will become clever.
[33] If you love to listen you will gain knowledge,
and if you incline your ear you will become wise.
[34] Stand in the assembly of the elders.
Who is wise? Cleave to him.
[35] Be ready to listen to every narrative,
and do not let wise proverbs escape you.
[36] If you see an intelligent man, visit him early;
let your foot wear out his doorstep.
[37] Reflect on the statutes of the Lord,
and meditate at all times on his commandments.
It is he who will give insight to your mind,
and your desire for wisdom will be granted.

 [1]친구를 저버리는 것은 겉과 속이 다른 죄인이나 할 짓이고 그런 짓을 하면 평판이 나빠져서 비난과 망신을 살 분이다.
[2]격정에 사로잡히지 말아라. 그것이 미친 황소처럼 네 영혼을 짓밟아 버릴까 두렵다.
[3]격정에 빠지면 너는 너의 잎을 뜯어 삼켜 열매를 못 맺게 되고 마침내 메마른 나무처럼 버려지리라.
[4]탐욕에 사로잡힌 영혼은 그 사람을 망하게 하고 그를 원수들의 웃음거리로 만들리라.
[5]부드러운 말은 친구를 많이 만들고 상냥한 말은 친구들을 정답게 한다.
[6]될 수 있는 대로 많은 사람들과 잘 사귀어라. 그러나 네 마음을 털어 놓은 친구는 한 사람만 택하여라.
[7]친구를 사귈 때에는 먼저 그를 시험해 볼 일이다. 너무 서둘러 네 마음을 주지 말아라.
[8]어떤 친구는 자기에게 이익이 있을 때에만 우정을 보이고 네가 불행하게 되면 너를 버린다.
[9]어떤 친구는 원수로 변하여 너와 싸우며 너의 숨은 약점을 공개한다.
[10]또 어떤 친구는 너의 식탁에는 잘 와서 앉으나 네가 불행하게 되면 너를 버린다.
[11]네가 잘 살 대는 네 집을 자기 집처럼 여기고 네 하인들마저 마음대로 부리다가
[12]네가 망하게 되면 등을 돌려 네 앞에서 자취를 감춰 버린다.
[13]원수들은 멀리하고 친구들도 경계하여라.
[14]성실한 친구는 안전한 피난처요 그런 친구를 가진 것은 보화를 지닌 것과 같다.
[15]성실한 친구는 무엇과도 비길 수 없으며 그 우정을 값으로 따질 수 없다.
[16]성실한 친구는 생명의 신비한 약인데 주님을 두려워하는 사람만이 이런 친구를 얻을 수 있다.
[17]주님을 두려워하는 사람은 참된 벗을 만든다. 그러므로 그의 친구도 그처럼 참되게 대해 준다.
[18]너는 들어라! 젊을 때부터 교양을 쌓아라. 그러면 늙어서도 지혜가 너를 떠나지 않으리라.
[19]밭을 갈고 씨를 뿌리듯이 지혜를 가꾸어라. 그리고 끈기를 가지고 지혜의 좋은 열매를 기다려라. 지혜를 가꾸노라면 얼마 동안은 고생하겠지만 멀지 않아 그 열매를 맛보게 되리라.
[20]지혜의 길은 무식한 사람들에게 더없이 험준하고 경솔한 사람은 지혜의 길을 오래 견디지 못한다.
[21]그런 경솔한 사람에게 무거운 시련이 바위처럼 내리누르면 그는 곧 지혜를 내던지고 만다.
[22]지혜는 문자 그대로 지혜라, 아무나 터득하는 것은 아니다.
[23]너는 들어라, 내 의견을 받아 들여 나의 충고를 거역하지 말아라.
[24]네 발을 지혜의 족쇄로 채우고 네 목에 지혜의 칼을 써라.
[25]네 등을 구푸려 지혜의 짐을 지고 그 속박에 짜증내지 말아라.
[26]네 정성을 다하여 지혜를 따르고 네 전력을 기울여 지혜의 길을 지켜라.
[27]그 발자취를 살펴 따르면 지혜는 너에게 나타나리라. 그리고 한번 지혜를 붙잡거든 놓치지 말아라.
[28]너는 그 지혜에게서 마침내 안식을 얻고 그 지혜는 너에게 기쁨이 되어 주리라.
[29]그 때 지혜의 족쇄는 너에게 견고한 방패가 되고 네 목에 슨 칼은 영광스런 의상이 되리라.
[30]지혜의 멍에는 황금의 장식이 되고 그 밧줄은 고귀한 옷술이 된다.
[31]네가 지혜를 영광의 예복처럼 입을 것이요 빛나는 왕관처럼 머리에 쓸 것이다.
[32]너는 들어라, 마음만 있으면 지혜를 배울 수 있고 그것에 정진하면 현명해질 것이다.
[33]네가 듣기를 좋아하면 배우는 것이 많겠고 귀를 기울일 줄 알면 현자가 되리라.
[34]너는 노인들의 모임에 자주 가고 그 중에 현명한 사람이 있거든 그를 가까이 하여라.
[35]신성한 말씀을 항상 즐겨 듣고 뜻깊은 격언을 귓전으로 흘려 버리지 말아라.
[36]지혜로운 사람을 발견하거든 아침 일찍부터 그를 찾아 그 집 문지방이 닳도록 다녀라.
[37]주님의 계명을 마음 속에 새기고 그 명하신 모든 것을 실천하여라. 그러면 주님께서 네 마음을 굳세게 해 주시고 네가 바라는 지혜를 주시리라.

　

Sir.7

[1] Do no evil, and evil will never befall you.
[2] Stay away from wrong, and it will turn away from you.
[3] My son, do not sow the furrows of injustice,
and you will not reap a sevenfold crop.

[4] Do not seek from the Lord the highest office,
nor the seat of honor from the king.
[5] Do not assert your righteousness before the Lord,
nor display your wisdom before the king.
[6] Do not seek to become a judge,
lest you be unable to remove iniquity,
lest you be partial to a powerful man,
and thus put a blot on your integrity.
[7] Do not offend against the public,
and do not disgrace yourself among the people.

[8] Do not commit a sin twice;
even for one you will not go unpunished.
[9] Do not say, "He will consider the multitude of my gifts,
and when I make an offering to the Most High
God he will accept it."
[10] Do not be fainthearted in your prayer,
nor neglect to give alms.

[11] Do not ridicule a man who is bitter in soul,
for there is One who abases and exalts.
[12] Do not devise a lie against your brother,
nor do the like to a friend.
[13] Refuse to utter any lie,
for the habit of lying serves no good.
[14] Do not prattle in the assembly of the elders,
nor repeat yourself in your prayer.

[15] Do not hate toilsome labor,
or farm work, which were created by the Most High.
[16] Do not count yourself among the crowd of sinners;
remember that wrath does not delay.
[17] Humble yourself greatly,
for the punishment of the ungodly is fire and worms.

[18] Do not exchange a friend for money,
or a real brother for the gold of Ophir.
[19] Do not deprive yourself of a wise and good wife,
for her charm is worth more than gold.
[20] Do not abuse a servant who performs his work faithfully,
or a hired laborer who devotes himself to you.
[21] Let your soul love an intelligent servant;
do not withhold from him his freedom.

[22] Do you have cattle? Look after them;
if they are profitable to you, keep them.
[23] Do you have children? Discipline them,
and make them obedient from their youth.
[24] Do you have daughters? Be concerned for their chastity,
and do not show yourself too indulgent with them.
[25] Give a daughter in marriage; you will have
finished a great task.
But give her to a man of understanding.

[26] If you have a wife who pleases you, do not cast her out;
but do not trust yourself to one whom you detest.
[27] With all your heart honor your father,
and do not forget the birth pangs of your mother.
[28] Remember that through your parents you were born;
and what can you give back to them that equals
their gift to you?

[29] With all your soul fear the Lord,
and honor his priests.
[30] With all your might love your Maker,
and do not forsake his ministers.
[31] Fear the Lord and honor the priest,
and give him his portion, as is commanded you:
the first fruits, the guilt offering, the gift
of the shoulders,
the sacrifice of sanctification,
and the first fruits of the holy things.

[32] Stretch forth your hand to the poor,
so that your blessing may be complete.
[33] Give graciously to all the living,
and withhold not kindness from the dead.
[34] Do not fail those who weep,
but mourn with those who mourn.
[35] Do not shrink from visiting a sick man,
because for such deeds you will be loved.
[36] In all you do, remember the end of your life,
and then you will never sin.

 [1]악을 행하지 말아라. 해를 입지 않으리라.
[2]주정을 멀리하여라. 부정도 너에게서 떠나 가리라.
[3]아들아, 부정한 밭에 씨를 뿌리지 말아라. 악의 열매를 일곱 배로 거둘까 두렵다.
[4]주님께 높은 자리를 구하지 말며 왕에게 영예로운 자리를 청하지 말아라.
[5]주님 앞에서 의로운 자인 체하지 말며 왕 앞에서 지혜로운 자인 체하지 말아라.
[6]불의를 뿌리뽑을 힘이 없거든 재판관이 되려 하지 말아라. 고위층의 압력을 받아서 네 정직한 마음이 흔들릴까 두렵다.
[7]백성들에게 공정하기 못한 판단을 내려 민중 앞에서 체통을 잃은 일이 없도록 하여라.
[8]죄를 겹쳐 짓지 말아. 죄 하나로도 벌을 면할 수가 없다.
[9]"하느님께서는 내가 바치는 많은 제물을 보아 주실 것이며 내가 지극히 높으신 하느님께 제사를 드릴 때 그가 쾌히 받아 주시리라" 고 장담하지 말아라.
[10]기도드릴 때 신뢰심을 잃지 말고 자선을 베풀기를 게을리 하지 말아라
[11]불행 속에 빠져 있는 사람은 비웃지 말아라. 그 사람을 떨어뜨리신 분이 들어 올리기도 하신다.
[12]형제를 해치려고 거짓을 꾸미지 말고 또 친구를 거짓으로 해치지 말아라.
[13]어떠한 거짓말도 입에 담지 말아라. 거짓말에 아무리 익숙해도 좋은 결과를 맺을 수 없다.
[14]어른들의 모임에서 말을 많이 하지 말고 기도할 대에는 같은 말을 되풀이하지 말아라.
[15]힘든 노동을 피하지 말고 지극히 높으신 분께서 마련하신 농사일을 싫어하지 말아라.
[16]유예 없는 하느님의 진노를 생각하여 죄인의 무리에 끼지 말아라.
[17]네 자신을 낮출 수 있을 만큼 낮추어라. 악인에게는 불길과 구더기의 벌이 내릴 분이다.
[18]친구를 돈과 바꾸지 말며 친형제를 오빌의 황금과 바꾸지 말아라.
[19]지혜롭고 착한 아내를 버리지 말아라. 그 심덕은 황금을 주고도 사지 못한다.
[20]정직하게 일하는 종을 천대하지 말며 열심히 일하는 일꾼을 박대하지 말아라.
[21]지혜로운 종을 진심으로 사랑하고 그에게 자유를 주는 데 인색하지 말아라.
[22]가축을 가지고 있거든 잘 보살펴라. 특히 노역에 도움이 되는 가축은 더욱 잘 간수하여라.
[23]아들이 있거든 잘 기르되 어려서부터 길을 잘 들여라.
[24]딸이 있거든 정숙하게 기르되 언제나 엄격하게 다스려라.
[25]딸을 시집보내고 나면 큰 짐을 덜게 된다. 그러나 지혜로운 남자를 골라 그에게 주어라.
[26]선량한 아내를 버리지 말고 간사한 아내를 믿지 말아라.
[27]네 마음을 다하여 아비를 공경하고 너를 낳으실 때 겪은 어미의 고통을 잊지 말아라.
[28]네가 세상에 태어난 것은 부모님의 덕택임을 잊지 말아라. 그들의 은덕을 네가 어떻게 무엇으로 갚을 수 있겠느냐?
[29]네 마음을 다하여 주님을 두려워하고 주님의 사제들을 공경하여라. 온 힘을 다하여 네 창조주를 사랑하고
[30]온 힘을 다하여 네 창조주를 사랑하고 그분의 봉사자들을 공양하여라.
[31]그리고 주님이 명하신 대로 사제에게 곡물을 바쳐라. 즉 첫 수확물과 속죄의 제물과 짐승의 어깨 부분과 성결제의 제물과 거룩하게 드린 것들의 첫 몫을 바쳐라.
[32]가난한 사람에게도 후하게 하여라. 그러면 주님의 충만한 축복을 받으리라. 산 사람 모두에게 너그럽게 은덕을 베풀 것이며
[33]산 사람 모두에게 너그럽게 은덕을 베풀 것이며 죽은 사람에게까지도 은덕을 베풀어라.
[34]우는 사람들을 내버려 두지 말고 슬퍼하는 사람들과 함께 슬퍼하여라.
[35]병자 위문을 게을리 하지 말아라. 그러면 네가 사랑을 받으리라.
[36]무슨 일을 하든지 너의 마지막 순간을 생각하고 절대로 죄를 짓지 말아라.

　

Sir.8

[1] Do not contend with a powerful man,
lest you fall into his hands.
[2] Do not quarrel with a rich man,
lest his resources outweigh yours;
for gold has ruined many,
and has perverted the minds of kings.
[3] Do not argue with a chatterer,
nor heap wood on his fire.

[4] Do not jest with an ill-bred person,
lest your ancestors be disgraced.
[5] Do not reproach a man who is turning away from sin;
remember that we all deserve punishment.
[6] Do not disdain a man when he is old,
for some of us are growing old.
[7] Do not rejoice over any one's death;
remember that we all must die.
[8] Do not slight the discourse of the sages,
but busy yourself with their maxims;
because from them you will gain instruction
and learn how to serve great men.
[9] Do not disregard the discourse of the aged,
for they themselves learned from their fathers;
because from them you will gain understanding
and learn how to give an answer in time of need.

[10] Do not kindle the coals of a sinner,
lest you be burned in his flaming fire.
[11] Do not get up and leave an insolent fellow,
lest he lie in ambush against your words.
[12] Do not lend to a man who is stronger than you;
but if you do lend anything, be as one who has lost it.
[13] Do not give surety beyond your means,
but if you give surety, be concerned as one who must pay.

[14] Do not go to law against a judge,
for the decision will favor him because of his standing.
[15] Do not travel on the road with a foolhardy fellow,
lest he be burdensome to you;
for he will act as he pleases,
and through his folly you will perish with him.
[16] Do not fight with a wrathful man,
and do not cross the wilderness with him;
because blood is as nothing in his sight,
and where no help is at hand, he will strike you down.
[17] Do not consult with a fool,
for he will not be able to keep a secret.
[18] In the presence of a stranger do nothing that
is to be kept secret,
for you do not know what he will divulge.
[19] Do not reveal your thoughts to every one,
lest you drive away your good luck.

 [1]권력자와 맞서지 말아라. 그의 손에 망할까 두렵다.
[2]부자와 싸우지 말아라. 그의 금력에 눌릴까 두렵다. 황금은 많은 사람을 파멸시켰고 제왕들의 마음을 사로잡았다.
[3]말 많은 사람과 다투지 말아라. 그것은 불에 장작을 넣는 것과 같다.
[4]버릇없는 사람과 농담을 하지 말아라. 잘못하다간 네 조상들을 욕되게 한다.
[5]회개하는 죄인을 나무라지 말아라. 우리 모두가 다 죄인이었음을 생각하여라.
[6]늙은 사람을 괄시하지 말아라. 우리 또한 늙어가지 않느냐?
[7]남의 죽음을 좋아하지 말아라. 우리 모두 죽는다는 것을 생각하여라.
[8]현명한 사람들의 말을 소홀히 듣지 말고 그들의 격언을 되새겨라. 네가 그들로부터 교훈을 얻어서 높은 사람 노릇하는 법을 터득하리라.
[9]노인들의 말을 소홀히 여기지 말아라. 그들도 조상들로부터 배웠다. 네가 그들에게서 현명함을 배울 것이요 적절히 대답하는 법을 배울 것이다.
[10]죄인의 불집을 건드리지 말아라. 네가 그 불길에 휩쓸릴까 두렵다.
[11]난폭한 사람과 맞서 시비하지 말아라. 그는 네 말꼬리를 잡으려고 기다리고 있다.
[12]너보다 더 세력있는 사람에게 돈을 꾸어 주지 말아라. 혹, 꾸어 주었거든 잃어 버린 것으로 생각하여라.
[13]네 능력 이상으로 보증을 서지 말며 보증을 섰으면 대신 갚을 각오를 하여라.
[14]재판관을 걸어서 소송하지 말아라. 재판은 그의 승소로 돌아 가리라.
[15]무모한 사람과 동행하지 말아라. 그는 너에게 짐이 될 것이다. 그는 마음내키는 대로 행동할 것이고 그의 어리석음 때문에 너까지 망하게 되리라.
[16]성미가 과격한 사람과 논쟁하지 말며 후미진 곳으로 함께 가지 말아라. 그는 살인도 예사로 알며 보는 이가 없으면 너를 덮칠 것이다.
[17]어리석은 자와 털어놓고 의논하지 말아라. 그는 비밀을 지킬 줄 모른다.
[18]비밀에 속한 일을 모르는 사람 앞에서 하지 말아라. 그가 그것을 어떻게 이용할 지 알 수 없다.
[19]아무에게나 네 마음을 털어놓지 말아라. 누구나 네 마음을 받아 주지는 않는다.

[1] Do not be jealous of the wife of your bosom,
and do not teach her an evil lesson to your own hurt.
[2] Do not give yourself to a woman
so that she gains mastery over your strength.
[3] Do not go to meet a loose woman,
lest you fall into her snares.
[4] Do not associate with a woman singer,
lest you be caught in her intrigues.
[5] Do not look intently at a virgin,
lest you stumble and incur penalties for her.
[6] Do not give yourself to harlots
lest you lose your inheritance.
[7] Do not look around in the streets of a city,
nor wander about in its deserted sections.
[8] Turn away your eyes from a shapely woman,
and do not look intently at beauty belonging to another;
many have been misled by a woman's beauty,
and by it passion is kindled like a fire.
[9] Never dine with another man's wife,
nor revel with her at wine;
lest your heart turn aside to her,
and in blood you be plunged into destruction.

[10] Forsake not an old friend,
for a new one does not compare with him.
A new friend is like new wine;
when it has aged you will drink it with pleasure.

[11] Do not envy the honors of a sinner,
for you do not know what his end will be.
[12] Do not delight in what pleases the ungodly;
remember that they will not be held guiltless
as long as they live.

[13] Keep far from a man who has the power to kill,
and you will not be worried by the fear of death.
But if you approach him, make no misstep,
lest he rob you of your life.
Know that you are walking in the midst of snares,
and that you are going about on the city battlements.

[14] As much as you can, aim to know your neighbors,
and consult with the wise.
[15] Let your conversation be with men of understanding,
and let all your discussion be about the law of the Most High.
[16] Let righteous men be your dinner companions,
and let your glorying be in the fear of the Lord.
[17] A work will be praised for the skill of the craftsmen;
so a people's leader is proved wise by his words.
[18] A babbler is feared in his city,
and the man who is reckless in speech will be hated.

 [1]사랑하는 아내를 질투하지 말아라. 너의 아내가 너를 해칠 생각을 품게 되리라.
[2]그러나 아내에게 너무 빠지지도 말아라. 네가 오히려 밟힐지도 모른다.
[3]창녀를 가까이하지 말아라. 그 여자의 홀림에 넘어갈까 두렵다.
[4]기생집에 발길을 삼가라. 그 여자의 계략에 넘어갈까 두렵다.
[5]처녀에게 눈을 팔지 말아라. 여자와 함께 벌을 받을까 두렵다.
[6]창녀들에게 네 마음을 주지 말아라. 네 재산을 잃을까 두렵다.
[7]길거리에서 한눈을 팔지 말 것이요 구석진 골목에서 서성거리지도 말아라.
[8]예쁜 여자를 너무 바라보지 말고 남의 아내의 아름다움에 혹하지 말아라. 정욕이 불길처럼 타올라, 여자의 미모 때문에 신세를 망친 사람이 많다.
[9]유부녀와 자리를 같이하지 말고 또한 술마실 기회도 갖지 말아라. 그 여자의 매력에 홀려 욕정이 멸망으로 치달을까 두렵다.
[10]옛 친구를 버리지 말아라. 새로 사귄 친근 옛 친구만 못하다. 새 친구는 새 술과 같으니, 묵은 술이라야 제 맛이 난다.
[11]악인의 성공을 부러워하지 말아라. 그의 말로가 어떠할 것인지를 너는 모른다.
[12]악인들이 즐기는 것을 좋아하지 말아라. 그들이 죽기 전에 반드시 벌받으리라는 것을 알아두어라.
[13]너를 죽일 권한을 가진 세도가를 멀리하여라. 그러면 그의 손에 죽을 염려가 없다. 만일 그에게 가까이 가게 되거든 네 몸을 사려라. 자칫하면 그가 네 목숨을 앗아 갈지도 모른다. 너는 함정 가운데를 걷고 있으며 적이 노리는 성벽 위를 걷는 것과 같다.
[14]될 수 있는 대로 이웃과 잘 어울리고 현명한 사람들과 의견을 나눠라.
[15]교양있는 사람들과 즐겨 이야기하되 지극히 높으신 분의 율법에 관해서 말을 나눠라.
[16]의로운 사람들과 함께 식사를 하고 주님 두려워하는 것을 자랑으로 삼아라.
[17]공예가는 그 솜씨로 칭찬을 받고 민중의 지도자는 그의 말로 명성을 얻는다.
[18]빈말하는 사람은 따돌림을 받고 수다스러운 사람은 미움을 산다.
