[1] Then Judith fell upon her face, and put ashes
on her head, and uncovered the sackcloth she was
wearing; and at the very time when that evening's
incense was being offered in the house of God in
Jerusalem, Judith cried out to the Lord with a loud
voice, and said,
[2] "O Lord God of my father Simeon, to whom
thou gavest a sword to take revenge on the strangers who
had loosed the girdle of a virgin to defile her, and
uncovered her thigh to put her to shame, and polluted
her womb to disgrace her; for thou hast said, `It shall
not be done' -- yet they did it.
[3] So thou gavest up their rulers to be slain,
and their bed, which was ashamed of the deceit they had
practiced, to be stained with blood, and thou didst
strike down slaves along with princes, and princes on
their thrones;
[4] and thou gavest their wives for a prey and
their daughters to captivity, and all their booty to be
divided among thy beloved sons, who were zealous for
thee, and abhorred the pollution of their blood, and
called on thee for help -- O God, my God, hear me also,
a widow.
[5] "For thou hast done these things and
those that went before and those that followed; thou
hast designed the things that are now, and those that
are to come. Yea, the things thou didst intend came to
pass,
[6] and the things thou didst will presented
themselves and said, `Lo, we are here'; for all they
ways are prepared in advance, and thy judgment is with
foreknowledge.
[7] "Behold now, the Assyrians are increased
in their might; they are exalted, with their horses and
riders; they glory in the strength of their foot
soldiers; they trust in shield and spear, in bow and
sling, and know not that thou art the Lord who crushest
wars; the Lord is thy name.
[8] Break their strength by thy might, and bring
down their power in thy anger; for they intend to defile
thy sanctuary, and to pollute the tabernacle where thy
glorious name rests, and to cast down the horn of thy
altar with the sword.
[9] Behold their pride, and send thy wrath upon
their heads; give to me, a widow, the strength to do
what I plan.
[10] By the deceit of my lips strike down the
slave with the prince and the prince with his servant;
crush their arrogance by the hand of a woman.
[11] "For thy power depends not upon
numbers, nor thy might upon men of strength; for thou
art God of the lowly, helper of the oppressed, upholder
of the weak, protector of the forlorn, savior of those
without hope.
[12] Hear, O hear me, God of my father, God of
the inheritance of Israel, Lord of heaven and earth,
Creator of the waters, King of all thy creation, hear my
prayer!
[13] Make my deceitful words to be their wound
and stripe, for they have planned cruel things against
thy covenant, and against thy consecrated house, and
against the top of Zion, and against the house possessed
by thy children.
[14] And cause thy whole nation and every tribe
to know and understand that thou art God, the God of all
power and might, and that there is no other who protects
the people of Israel but thou alone!"

장
[1]유딧은 땅에 엎드려 머리에 재를
뿌리고 속에 입고 있던 베옷을 드러냈다.
그리고는,
바로 그 때 예루살렘에 있는
하느님의 성전에서 저녁 향을 태우고
있었는데,
유딧은 주님을 향하여 큰
소리로 이렇게 기도하였다.
[2]"내 조상 시므온의 주 하느님,
주님께서는 시므온에게 칼을 쥐어 주셔서
이방인들을 처벌하게 하셨습니다.
처녀의
치마를 벗겨 욕을 보이고 아랫도리를
드러나게 하여 모욕을 주고 태를 범하여
수치를 보게 한 이방인들을 말입니다.
이런 짓을 해서는 안 된다는 주님의
말씀에도 불구하고 그들은 그런 짓을
하고야 말았습니다.
[3]그래서 주님은 그들의 지도자들을
학살당하게 하시고,
기만으로 더럽혀진
그들의 침대를 피로 물들이게 하셨으며
노예를 군주와 더불어,
군주를 옥좌와
더불어 쳐서 쓰러지게 하셨습니다.
[4]당신은 그들의 아내들을 빼앗기게
하시고,
그들의 딸들을 포로로 잡혀 가게
하시고,
그들의 모든 무기를 당신게서
사랑하시는 자녀들이 나누어 가지게
하셨습니다.
당신의 자녀들은 당신께 대한
열성이 대단하였고,
그들의 피로
더러워지는 것을 싫어하였으며,
당신께
도움을 청하였습니다.
하느님,
나의
하느님,
이 과부의 말을 들어 주소서.
[5]그런 일들과,
그보다 먼저 일어난
일들과,
그 후에 일어난 일들은 모두
당신게서 하신 일들입니다.
그리고 지금
일어나고 있는 일들과 앞으로 있을 일들은
당신께서 계획하신 것입니다.
그리고
당신께서 생각하신 것은 모두 다
이루어졌습니다.
[6]당신께서 원하시기만 하면
무엇이든지 나타나서 '여기 대령했습니다'
하고 말하였습니다.
당신은 가실 길을
모두 미리 마련하셨고 어떤 심판을
내리실지 미리 아시고 결정하셨습니다.
[7]저 아시리아 사람들은 병력이
대단합니다.
그들은 말과 기병들을 가지고
우쭐대고 있으며 보병의 위력을 가지고
뽐냅니다.
그리고 방패와 칼과 창과
팔매총을 가지고 자신만만입니다.
그러나
그들은 당신게서 전쟁을 승리로 이끄시는
주님이시라는 것을 모릅니다.
[8]당신의 이름은 주님이십니다.
당신의 능력으로 그들의 강한 힘을
쳐부수시고 당신의 분노를 일으키시어
그들의 세력을 꺾어 주소서.
그들은
당신의 성소를 모독하고 당신의
영광스러운 이름이 머물러 있는 곳을
더럽히며 당신 제단에 있는 뿔을 칼로 쳐
내릴 궁리를 하고 있습니다.
[9]그들의 거만한 자세를 보시고
당신의 분노를 그들 머리 위에 퍼부어
주소서.
이 과부에게 뜻하는 일을 이룰 수
있는 힘을 주소서.
[10]간계를 꾸미는 이 입술을
이용하여 원수들을 넘어뜨리소서.
종들을
그 상전과 함께 상전을 그 신하와 함께
쓰러지게 하소서.
그리고 여자의 손을
이용하여 그들의 콧대를 꺾으소서.
[11]당신의 위력은 많은 수효에 있지
아니하고 당신의 능력은 힘센 사람에게
있지 않습니다.
당신은 보잘 것 없는
사람들의 하느님이시고 불쌍한 사람들을
도우시는 분이시며,
약한 자를 붙들어
주시는 분이시요,
버림받는 사람들의
보호자이시며 희망없는 사람들의
구조자이십니다.
[12]당신은 참으로 내 조상의
하느님이시요 이스라엘을 상속으로
주시는 하느님으로서 하늘과 땅을
다스리시고 물을 만들어 주신 분이시며
모든 피조물의 왕이십니다.
내 기도를
들어 주소서.
[13]원수들을 속여서 타격을 주고
상처를 입힐 수 있는 구변을 주소서.
그들은,
당신의 계약과 당신의 성전과
시온산과,
당신의 자녀들이 소유하고 있는
집을 해치려고 흉악한 음모를 구미고
있습니다.
[14]바로 당신께서 모든 권능과
위력을 가지신 하느님이시라는 것과
오로지 당신밖에는 아무도 이스라엘
민족을 보호하실 분이 없다는 것을 모든
나라와 당신의 모든 족속들이 깨달아 알게
하여 주소서."

[1] When Judith had ceased crying out to the God
of Israel, and had ended all these words,
[2] she rose from where she lay prostrate and
called her maid and went down into the house where she
lived on sabbaths and on her feast days;
[3] and she removed the sackcloth which she had
been wearing, and took off her widow's garments, and
bathed her body with water, and anointed herself with
precious ointment, and combed her hair and put on a
tiara, and arrayed herself in her gayest apparel, which
she used to wear while her husband Manasseh was living.
[4] And she put sandals on her feet, and put on
her anklets and bracelets and rings, and her earrings
and all her ornaments, and made herself very beautiful,
to entice the eyes of all men who might see her.
[5] And she gave her maid a bottle of wine and a
flask of oil, and filled a bag with parched grain and a
cake of dried fruit and fine bread; and she wrapped up
all her vessels and gave them to her to carry.
[6] Then they went out to the city gate of
Bethulia, and found Uzziah standing there with the
elders of the city, Chabris and Charmis.
[7] When they saw her, and noted how her face was
altered and her clothing changed, they greatly admired
her beauty, and said to her,
[8] "May the God of our fathers grant you
favor and fulfil your plans, that the people of Israel
may glory and Jerusalem may be exalted." And she
worshiped God.
[9] Then she said to them, "Order the gate
of the city to be opened for me, and I will go out and
accomplish the things about which you spoke with
me." So they ordered the young men to open the gate
for her, as she had said.
[10] When they had done this, Judith went out,
she and her maid with her; and the men of the city
watched her until she had gone down the mountain and
passed through the valley and they could no longer see
her.
[11] The women went straight on through the
valley; and an Assyrian patrol met her
[12] and took her into custody, and asked her,
"To what people do you belong, and where are you
coming from, and where are you going?" She replied,
"I am a daughter of the Hebrews, but I am fleeing
from them, for they are about to be handed over to you
to be devoured.
[13] I am on my way to the presence of Holofernes
the commander of your army, to give him a true report;
and I will show him a way by which he can go and capture
all the hill country without losing one of his men,
captured or slain."
[14] When the men heard her words, and observed
her face -- she was in their eyes marvelously beautiful
-- they said to her,
[15] "You have saved your life by hurrying
down to the presence of our lord. Go at once to his
tent; some of us will escort you and hand you over to
him.
[16] And when you stand before him, do not be
afraid in your heart, but tell him just what you have
said, and he will treat you well."
[17] They chose from their number a hundred men
to accompany her and her maid, and they brought them to
the tent of Holofernes.
[18] There was great excitement in the whole
camp, for her arrival was reported from tent to tent,
and they came and stood around her as she waited outside
the tent of Holofernes while they told him about her.
[19] And they marveled at her beauty, and admired
the Israelites, judging them by her, and every one said
to his neighbor, "Who can despise these people, who
have women like this among them? Surely not a man of
them had better be left alive, for if we let them go
they will be able to ensnare the whole world!"
[20] Then Holofernes' companions and all his
servants came out and led her into the tent.
[21] Holofernes was resting on his bed, under a
canopy which was woven with purple and gold and emeralds
and precious stones.
[22] When they told him of her he came forward to
the front of the tent, with silver lamps carried before
him.
[23] And when Judith came into the presence of
Holofernes and his servants, they all marveled at the
beauty of her face; and she prostrated herself and made
obeisance to him, and his slaves raised her up.

장
[1]유딧은 이렇게 이스라엘의
하느님께 모든 것을 다 말씀드리고
부르짖기를 끝냈다.
[2]그리고 나서 유딧은 일어나 시녀를
불러,
자기가 안식일과 축제일을 지내던
그 집으로 함께 내려 갔다.
[3]유딧은 속에 입었던 베옷을 벗고
과부 옷차림을 벗어 버렸다.
그리고 온
몸을 물로 씻고 좋은 향유를 바른 다음
머리를 빗고 그 위에 처네를 쓰고 자기
남편 므나쎄가 살아 있을 때 입던 화려한
옷을 차려 입었다.
[4]신을 신고 발목가락지와,
팔찌와
반지를 끼고 귀걸이와 그 밖에 가지고
있는 모든 장식을 붙이고 남자들의 눈을
흘릴 만큼 요란하게 꾸몄다.
[5]유딧은 하녀에게 포도주가 든
가죽부대와 기름단지를 주었고,
보리볶음과 전과와 부정타지 않은 빵을
부대에 넣어 주었으며 자기의 그릇을 싸서
짊어지게 하였다.
[6]그들은 베툴리아 성문으로 나가서
거기에서 원로 카브리스와 카르미스를
데리고 기다리고 있는 우찌야를 만났다.
[7]그들은 유딧의 용모가 완전히
달라졌고 옷마저 갈아 입은 것을 보았을
대 그 미모에 넋을 잃었다.
그리고 그
여자에게 이렇게 말하였다.
[8]"우리 조상들의 하느님께서
당신에게 은총을 베푸셔서 이스라엘
사람들의 명예와 예루살렘의 영광을
드높이기 위한 당신의 계획이 이루어지게
해 주시기를 바랍니다."
[9]유딧은 엎드려서 하느님께
경배하고 나서 그들에게 말하였다. "성문을
열라고 명령해 주십시오.
그러면 내가
나가서 여러분이 나에게 이야기한 그 모든
일을 이루겠습니다."
그래서 그들은 그
여자가 부탁한 대로 청년들에게 문을 열어
주라고 명령하였다.
[10]그들이 성문을 열자 유딧은 자기
하녀를 데리고 그 곳을 빠져 나갔다.
그
도성 사람들은 유딧이 산을 내려 가
골짜기를 지나 보이지 않게 될 때까지
지켜 보았다.
[11]유딧과 그의 하녀는 골짜기로
곧장 내려 갔을 때 아시리아 보초병과
마주치게 되었다.
[12]아시리아 사람들은 그 여자를
데려다가 심문하였다. "당신은 어느
사람이오?
어디서 왔소?
어디로 가는 거요?"
그러자 유딧은 이렇게 대답하였다. "나는
히브리 여자인데 히브리 사람들이 멀지
않아 당신들에게 먹혀 버리게 되었기
때문에 그들에게서 도망쳐 나오는
길입니다.
[13]그래서 나는 당신들 군대의
총사령관인 홀로페르네스에게로 가서
믿을 만한 정보를 제공하려고 합니다.
또
나는 그가 올라 가 산악지대를 모두
정복할 수 있는 길을 보여 드리겠습니다.
그러면 그의 부하 가운데 한 사람도
목숨을 잃지 않게 될 것입니다."
[14]그 사람들은 유딧의 말을
들으면서 그의 얼굴을 유심히 바라보고
유딧의 아름다움에 탄복하였다.
그리고 그
여자에게 다음과 같이 말하였다.
[15]"당신은 재빨리 우리 대장님
편으로 내려 왔기 때문에 목숨을 건진
것입니다.
그러니 어서 대장님 천막으로
가시오.
우리들 가운데 몇 사람이 당신을
인도하여 대장님께 맡기겠습니다.
[16]그분 앞에 나서거든 무서워하지
말고 우리에게 얘기한 대로 다 말하시오.
그러면 그분이 당신을 잘 대해 주실
것입니다."
[17]그리고 나서 그들 중에서 백 명이
뽑혀 유딧과 그 하녀들을 호송하여
홀로페르네스의 천막으로 인도하였다.
[18]여자가 왔다는 소문이 온 천막에
퍼지자 진영은 떠들썩했다.
보고가 들어
갈 때까지 유딧은 홀로페르네스의 천막
밖에 서 있었는데 그 때 군인들은 모두
몰려 나와 그 여자를 에워 쌌다.
[19]그들은 유딧의 아름다움에 놀랐고
또 그 여자의 아름다움을 미루어 보아
이스라엘 남자들이 얼마나 훌륭할까 하고
생각하며 감탄하였다.
그리고 다음과 같이
말하였다. "이와 같은 여자를 가지고
있는 저 민족을 어떻게 얕잡아 볼 수
있겠는가?
이런 사람들을 한 사람이라도
남겨 두었다가는 그들이 온 세상을 속여
먹고 말 것이다."
[20]홀로페르네스를 받드는 보좌관과
그의 시종들이 나와서 유딧을 천막으로
데리고 들어 갔다.
[21]홀로페르네스는 진흥포와 금과
에머랄드와 보석으로 장식된 휘장으로
둘러 싼 침대 위에 누워 있었다.
[22]그는 유딧이 왔다는 전갈을 듣고
은촛대를 앞에 들고 천막 입구로 나갔다.
[23]유딧이 홀로페르네스와 그의
시존들 앞에 나타났을 대 그들은 그미모에
깜짝 놀랐다.
유딧은 꿇어 엎드려
홀로페르네스에게 절을 하였다.
그러자
그의 종들이 유딧을 일으켜 세웠다.

[1] Then Holofernes said to her, "Take
courage, woman, and do not be afraid in your heart, for
I have never hurt any one who chose to serve
Nebuchadnezzar, the king of all the earth.
[2] And even now, if your people who live in the
hill country had not slighted me, I would never have
lifted my spear against them; but they have brought all
this on themselves.
[3] And now tell me why you have fled from them
and have come over to us -- since you have come to
safety.
[4] Have courage; you will live, tonight and from
now on. No one will hurt you, but all will treat you
well, as they do the servants of my lord King
Nebuchadnezzar."
[5] Judith replied to him, "Accept the words
of your servant, and let your maidservant speak in your
presence, and I will tell nothing false to my lord this
night.
[6] And if you follow out the words of your
maidservant, God will accomplish something through you,
and my lord will not fail to achieve his purposes.
[7] Nebuchadnezzar the king of the whole earth
lives, and as his power endures, who had sent you to
direct every living soul, not only do men serve him
because of you, but also the beasts of the field and the
cattle and the birds of the air will live by your power
under Nebuchadnezzar and all his house.
[8] For we have heard of your wisdom and skill,
and it is reported throughout the whole world that you
are the one good man in the whole kingdom, thoroughly
informed and marvelous in military strategy.
[9] "Now as for the things Achior said in
your council, we have heard his words, for the men of
Bethulia spared him and he told them all he had said to
you.
[10] Therefore, my lord and master, do not
disregard what he said, but keep it in your mind, for it
is true: our nation cannot be punished, nor can the
sword prevail against them, unless they sin against
their God.
[11] "And now, in order that my lord may not
be defeated and his purpose frustrated, death will fall
upon them, for a sin has overtaken them by which they
are about to provoke their God to anger when they do
what is wrong.
[12] Since their food supply is exhausted and
their water has almost given out, they have planned to
kill their cattle and have determined to use all that
God by his laws has forbidden them to eat.
[13] They have decided to consume the first
fruits of the grain and the tithes of the wine and oil,
which they had consecrated and set aside for the priests
who minister in the presence of our God at Jerusalem --
although it is not lawful for any of the people so much
as to touch these things with their hands.
[14] They have sent men to Jerusalem, because
even the people living there have been doing this, to
bring back to them permission from the senate.
[15] When the word reaches them and they proceed
to do this, on that very day they will be handed over to
you to be destroyed.
[16] "Therefore, when I, your servant,
learned all this, I fled from them; and God has sent me
to accomplish with you things that will astonish the
whole world, as many as shall hear about them.
[17] For your servant is religious, and serves
the God of heaven day and night; therefore, my lord, I
will remain with you, and every night your servant will
go out into the valley, and I will pray to God and he
will tell me when they have committed their sins.
[18] And I will come and tell you, and then you
shall go out with your whole army, and not one of them
will withstand you.
[19] Then I will lead you through the middle of
Judea, till you come to Jerusalem; and I will set your
throne in the midst of it; and you will lead them like
sheep that have no shepherd, and not a dog will so much
as open its mouth to growl at you. For this has been
told me, by my foreknowledge; it was announced to me,
and I was sent to tell you."
[20] Her words pleased Holofernes and all his
servants, and they marveled at her wisdom and said,
[21] "There is not such a woman from one end
of the earth to the other, either for beauty of face or
wisdom of speech!"
[22] And Holofernes said to her, "God has
done well to send you before the people, to lend
strength to our hands and to bring destruction upon
those who have slighted my lord.
[23] You are not only beautiful in appearance,
but wise in speech; and if you do as you have said, your
God shall be my God, and you shall live in the house of
King Nebuchadnezzar and be renowned throughout the whole
world."

장
[1]홀로페르네스는 유딧에게 이렇게
말하였다. "부인,
안심하십시오.
무서워할 것 없소.
온 땅을 다스리시는
느부갓네살왕을 섬기기로 마음 먹은
사람에게 나는 절대로 해를 끼치는 일이
없소.
[2]산간에 사는 당신 동족들이 나를
멸시하지 않았던들 그들에게 창을
겨누지는 않았을 거이오.
그러나 그들
스스로가 이렇게 하도록 만들었소.
[3]당신이 무엇 때문에 그들에게서
우리에게로 도망쳐 왔는지 이야기 해
보시오.
살기 위해 온 것이 아니오?
안심하시오.
[4]아무 데도 당신을 해칠 사람은
없소.
당신은 나의 상전이신
느부갓네살왕을 섬기는 사람들이 좋은
대우를 받듯이 당신도 좋은 대우를 받을
것이오."
[5]유딧이 그에게 대답하였다. "당신
여종의 청을 들어 주시고 이 소녀가 당신
앞에서 말씀드리게 해 주십시오.
오늘 밤
장군님께 말씀드리는 것은 거짓말이
아닙니다.
[6]이 소녀가 드리는 말씀을 그대로
따르시기만 한다면,
하느님께서 는 당신과
함께 이 일들을 완전히 이루실 것입니다.
그리고 장군님은 계획하신 일에 하나도
실패하시지 않을 것입니다.
[7]온 땅을 다스리시는 느부갓네살왕
만세!
그 크신 능력이 영속되기를 빕니다.
그분은 모든 생물을 올바르게 다스리도록
당신을 보내신 분이십니다.
인간들만이
당신을 통하여 그분을 섬기는 것이 아니라
들의 짐승과 가축과 하늘의 새들까지도
당신의 위력을 통하여 느부갓네살왕과 그
집안을 섬기며 살게 될 것입니다.
[8]우리는 당신이 지혜롭고 총명한
분이라는 말을 들었습니다.
그리고
전국에서 오직 당신만이 훌륭하고 지식이
풍부하고 전술이 뛰어난 분이시라는 것을
온 세상이 다 알고 있습니다.
[9]아키오르가,
당신이 주관하던 회의
때 한 말을 우리는 들었습니다.
베툴리아
사람들이 아키오르를 구해 준 일이
있었는데 그때 그는 자기가 당신 앞에서
한 모든 말을 베툴리아 사람들에게 들려
주었습니다.
[10]그러니 나의 상전이신 장군님,
그의 말을 무시하지 마십시오.
그의 말은
참말이니 마음 속에 잘 새겨 들으십시오.
우리 민족은 하느님께 대해서 죄를 짓지
않는 한 벌받거나 칼에 지는 일이 없을
것입니다.
[11]그러나 그들은 이미 죄에 빠져서,
해서는 안 될 일을 하여 하느님의 분노를
샀기 때문에 죽음을 면할 수 없을
것입니다.
이제 장군님께서는 패배하거나
실패하지 않을 것입니다.
[12]그들은 식량이 없어지고 물도 다
떨어졌기 때문에 자기들의 가축을
죽이려고 하였고 또 하느님께서 율법을
통하여 먹지 말라고 명령한 것을 모두
먹으려고 했습니다.
[13]그뿐 아니라 우리 하느님 앞에
나가서 봉사하는 예루살렘의 사제들만이
먹을 수 있도록 거룩하게 따로 떼어
두었던 곡식의 맏물,
그리고 포도주와
올리브 기름의 십분의 일세 등 일반
사람들이 도저히 건드릴 수 없는 것들을
먹어 치우려고 했습니다.
[14]예루살렘 사람들도 역시 그런
짓을 하고 있었기 때문에 베툴리아
사람들은 예루살렘으로 대표를 보내어
원로원의 허락을 얻어 오라고 했습니다.
[15]원로원이 허락하는 대로 그들은
틀림없이 그대로 행동하게 될 것입니다.
그러면 그들은 그 날로 당신 손에 넘어 가
망하게 될 것입니다.
[16]그래서 이 여종이 모든 것을 알고
그들에게서 도망쳐 나왔습니다.
하느님께서 나를 보내셔서 세상 사람들이
듣기만 해도 깜짝 놀랄 일을 당신과 함께
해내도록 하셨습니다.
[17]당신의 이 여종은 밤이나 낮이나
하늘에 계신 하느님을 섬기며 경건한
생활을 하는 사람입니다.
[18]그래서 나의 장군님,
이제는 내가
당신 곁에 있겠습니다.
그리고 밤에는
골짜기로 나가서 하느님께 기도를
드리겠습니다.
그러면 하느님께서 언제
그들이 죄를 범하는지를 나에게 알려 주실
것입니다.
그러면 내가 와서 당신에게
알려 드릴 테니 당신은 온 군대를 이끌고
쳐들어 가십시오.
그러면 당신을 맞설
사람은 한 사람도 없을 것입니다.
[19]당신이 유다 한복판을 지나
예루살렘에 도착할 때까지 내가
인도하겠습니다.
그리고 당신이 올라 설
자리를 예루살렘 한가운데 세우겠습니다.
그러면 당신이 그들을 목자 없는 양들처럼
몰아 내게 될 것이며 당신 앞에서 감히

[20]홀로페르네스와 그의 신하들은
유딧의 이 말을 듣고 기뻐하였다.
그들은
그 여자의 지혜에 놀라며 다음과 같이
말하였다.
[21]"이 여자처럼 용모가 아름답고
말재주가 훌륭한 사람은 이 세상 아무
데도 없을 것이다."
[22]홀로페르네스는 유딧에게 이렇게
말하였다. "그 백성들보다 먼저 당신을

업신여긴 그들에게 멸망을 가져다 주신
하느님은 참 고마우신 분이오.
[23]당신은 용모도 아름답고 말솜씨도
뛰어납니다.
당신의 하느님은 내 하느님이
되고 또 당신은 느부갓네살왕의 궁전에서
살게 될 것이며 이름을 온 세계에 떨치게
될 것이오."

[1] Then he commanded them to bring her in where
his silver dishes were kept, and ordered them to set a
table for her with some of his own food and to serve her
with his own wine.
[2] But Judith said, "I cannot eat it, lest
it be an offense; but I will be provided from the things
I have brought with me."
[3] Holofernes said to her, "If your supply
runs out, where can we get more like it for you? For
none of your people is here with us."
[4] Judith replied, "As your soul lives, my
lord, your servant will not use up the things I have
with me before the Lord carries out by my hand what he
has determined to do."
[5] Then the servants of Holofernes brought her
into the tent, and she slept until midnight. Along
toward the morning watch she arose
[6] and sent to Holofernes and said, "Let my
lord now command that your servant be permitted to go
out and pray."
[7] So Holofernes commanded his guards not to
hinder her. And she remained in the camp for three days,
and went out each night to the valley of Bethulia, and
bathed at the spring in the camp.
[8] When she came up from the spring she prayed
the Lord God of Israel to direct her way for the raising
up of her people.
[9] So she returned clean and stayed in the tent
until she ate her food toward evening.
[10] On the fourth day Holofernes held a banquet
for his slave only, and did not invite any of his
officers.
[11] And he said to Bagoas, the eunuch who had
charge of his personal affairs, "Go now and
persuade the Hebrew woman who is in your care to join us
and eat and drink with us.
[12] For it will be a disgrace if we let such a
woman go without enjoying her company, for if we do not
embrace her she will laugh at us."
[13] So Bagoas went out from the presence of
Holofernes, and approached her and said, "This
beautiful maidservant will please come to my lord and be
honored in his presence, and drink wine and be merry
with us, and become today like one of the daughters of
the Assyrians who serve in the house of
Nebuchadnezzar."
[14] And Judith said, "Who am I, to refuse
my lord? Surely whatever pleases him I will do at once,
and it will be a joy to me until the day of my
death!"
[15] So she got up and arrayed herself in all her
woman's finery, and her maid went and spread on the
ground for her before Holofernes the soft fleeces which
she had received from Bagoas for her daily use, so that
she might recline on them when she ate.
[16] Then Judith came in and lay down, and
Holofernes' heart was ravished with her and he was moved
with great desire to possess her; for he had been
waiting for an opportunity to deceive her, ever since
the day he first saw her.
[17] So Holofernes said to her. "Drink now,
and be merry with us!"
[18] Judith said, "I will drink now, my
lord, because my life means more to me today than in all
the days since I was born."
[19] Then she took and ate and drank before him
what her maid had prepared.
[20] And Holofernes was greatly pleased with her,
and drank a great quantity of wine, much more than he
had ever drunk in any one day since he was born.

[1]홀로페르네스는 부하들에게
유딧을 자기의 은그릇들이 놓여져 있는 방
안으로 인도하라고 명령하였다.
그리고
자기를 위해 만들어진 요리와 포도주를 그
여자에게 대접하라고 분부하였다.
[2]그러나 유딧은 이렇게 말하며
사양하였다. "율법을 범하지 않기
위하여 나는 그런 것은 먹지 못하겠습니다.
내가 가져온 음식을 먹겠습니다."
[3]홀로페르네스가 여자에게
말하였다. "만일 당신이 가져온 식량이
떨어진다면 우리가 어디서 그런 음식을
구해 올 수 있겠소?
여기에는 당신 나라
사람은 하나도 없소."
[4]유딧이 그에게 대답하였다. "장군님,
당신이 살아 계시는 것이 확실한 것처럼
당신 여종이 가져온 식량도 떨어지지 않을
것이 확실합니다.
그 식량이 떨어지기
전에 주님께서는 뜻하신 일들을 나를
통하여 다 이루실 것입니다."
[5]홀로페르네스의 시종들은 유딧을
천막 안으로 인도하였다.
그 여자는 밤이
깊도록 정신없이 자고 새벽녘에 일어나
[6]홀로페르네스에게 사람을 보내어
"나의 장군님,
당신의 여종이 기도하러
밖에 나갈 수 있는 허락을 받도록 명령해
주십시오"
하고 부탁하였다.
[7]홀로페르네스는 호위병에게
여자가 나가는 것을 막지 말라고
명령하였다.
사흘 동안 여자는 진영에
머물러 있으면서 밤마다 베툴리아의
산골짜기로 나가서 진영에 있는 샘물에
몸을 담갔다.
[8]그리고 물에서 올라 와 이스라엘의
주 하느님께 기도하며 이스라엘이 갈 길을
열어 주시고 하느님의 백성이 다시
일어서게 해 달라고 하였다.
[9]그리고 나서 그 여자는 깨끗한
몸으로 돌아 와서 저녁 밥상이 나올
때까지 천막 안에 누워 있었다.
[10]나흘째 되던 날 홀로페르네스는
연회를 베풀었는데 가까이 있는 부하들만
청하고 장교들은 하나도 청하지 않았다.
[11]홀로페르네스는 자기의 모든 것을
관리하는 내시 바고아에게 말하였다. "네
책임하에 있는 저 히브리 여자에게 가서
우리에게로 와서 우리와 함께 먹고
마시자고 타일러라.
[12]그런 여자와 한번도 놀아 보지
못하고 그대로 돌려 보낸다는 것은 우리의
수치다.
데려 오지 않는다면 도리어 그
여자가 우리를 비웃을 것이다."
[13]바고아는 홀로페르네스 앞을
물러나 유딧이 있는 곳으로 들어 가
이렇게 말하였다. "어여쁜 아가씨,
조금도 주저하지 말고 장군님 앞에 들어
가 장군님과 함께 영광을 누리십시오.
그리고 우리와 함께 포도주를 마시며
즐깁시다.
이 날은 느부갓네살 궁전에서
시중드는 아시리아의 딸처럼 되십시오."
[14]유딧이 그에게 대답하였다. "내가
어떻게 감히 장군님의 뜻을 거역할 수가
있겠습니까?
무엇이든지 그분의 눈에만
든다면 서슴지 않고 하겠습니다.
그렇게
하는 것이 내 평생의 기쁨이 될 것입니다."
[15]이렇게 말하고 나서 유딧은
일어나 옷을 잘 차려 입고 여러 가지
장식품으로 단장하였다.
그리고 유딧의
하녀는 먼저 나가서 유딧이 식사할 대에
앉을 수 있도록 폭신한 양가죽을
홀로페르네스 앞에 깔아 놓았다.
그
양가죽은 바고아가 유딧에게 매일 쓰라고
준 물건이었다.
[16]유딧이 들어 가 자리에 앉았다.
그
여자를 보고 홀로페르네스는 가슴이
설레고 마음이 동요되어 함께 자고 싶은
강한 욕망에 사로잡혔다.
실상 그는 그
여자를 보게 된 첫날부터 그 여자를
유혹할 기회만을 엿보고 있었던 것이다.
[17]홀로페르네스는 그 여자에게
"자,
어서 잔을 드시오.
우리와 함께 즐깁시다"
하고 말하였다.
[18]유딧은 "그럼 마시겠습니다.
장군님,
세상에 나온 이후로 오늘이 내
생애에 있어서 그 어느 날보다도 더
영광스러운 날입니다"
하고 말하였다.
[19]그리고 나서 유딧은 자기 하녀가
준비해 온 음식을 받아,
홀로페르네스
앞에서 먹고 마셨다.
[20]홀로페르네스는 그 여자 때문에
기분이 아주 좋았다.
그래서 그는
포도주를 마음껏 마셨다.
그가 이 세상에
태어난 이후 단 하루도 그렇게 많이 마셔
본 일이 없었다.

[1] When evening came, his slaves quickly
withdrew, and Bagoas closed the tent from outside and
shut out the attendants from his master's presence; and
they went to bed, for they all were weary because the
banquet had lasted long.
[2] So Judith was left alone in the tent , with
Holofernes stretched out on his bed, for he was overcome
with wine.
[3] Now Judith had told her maid to stand outside
the bedchamber and to wait for her to come out, as she
did every day; for she said she would be going out for
her prayers. And she had said the same thing to Bagoas.
[4] So every one went out, and no one, either
small or great, was left in the bedchamber. Then Judith,
standing beside his bed, said in her heart, "O Lord
God of all might, look in this hour upon the work of my
hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem.
[5] For now is the time to help thy inheritance,
and to carry out my undertaking for the destruction of
the enemies who have risen up against us."
[6] She went up to the post at the end of the
bed, above Holofernes' head, and took down his sword
that hung there.
[7] She came close to his bed and took hold of
the hair of his head, and said, "Give me strength
this day, O Lord God of Israel!"
[8] And she struck his neck twice with all her
might, and severed it from his body.
[9] Then she tumbled his body off the bed and
pulled down the canopy from the posts; after a moment
she went out, and gave Holofernes' head to her maid,
[10] who placed it in her food bag. Then the two
of them went out together, as they were accustomed to go
for prayer; and they passed through the camp and circled
around the valley and went up the mountain to Bethulia
and came to its gates.
[11] Judith called out from afar to the watchmen
at the gates, "Open, open the gate! God, our God,
is still with us, to show his power in Israel, and his
strength against our enemies, even as he has done this
day!"
[12] When the men of her city heard her voice,
they hurried down to the city gate and called together
the elders of the city.
[13] They all ran together, both small and great,
for it was unbelievable that she had returned; they
opened the gate and admitted them, and they kindled a
fire for light, and gathered around them.
[14] Then she said to them with a loud voice,
"Praise God, O praise him! Praise God, who has not
withdrawn his mercy from the house of Israel, but has
destroyed our enemies by my hand this very night!"
[15] Then she took the head out of the bag and
showed it to them, and said, "See, here is the head
of Holofernes, the commander of the Assyrian army, and
here is the canopy beneath which he lay in his drunken
stupor. The Lord has struck him down by the hand of a
woman.
[16] As the Lord lives, who has protected me in
the way I went, it was my face that tricked him to his
destruction, and yet he committed no act of sin with me,
to defile and shame me."
[17] All the people were greatly astonished, and
bowed down and worshiped God, and said with one accord,
"Blessed art thou, our God, who hast brought into
contempt this day the enemies of thy people."
[18] And Uzziah said to her, "O daughter,
you are blessed by the Most High God above all women on
earth; and blessed be the Lord God, who created the
heavens and the earth, who has guided you to strike the
head of the leader of our enemies.
[19] Your hope will never depart from the hearts
of men, as they remember the power of God.
[20] May God grant this to be a perpetual honor
to you, and may he visit you with blessings, because you
did not spare your own life when our nation was brought
low, but have avenged our ruin, walking in the straight
path before our God." And all the people said,
"So be it, so be it!"

[1]저녁 때가 되어 그의 종들은
총총히 물러나갔다.
바고아는 천막을
밖으로 잠가 버리고 시종들을 장군 앞에
얼씬거리지 못하게 하였다.
그들은 연회가
오래 계속되었기 때문에 모두 지쳐서
제각기 잠자리로 돌아 갔던 것이다.
[2]유딧만이 천막 안에 혼자 남아
있었고 홀로페르네스는 잔뜩 취하여 침대
위에 쓰러져 있었다.
[3]유딧은 하녀에게 일러서 침실 밖에
서 있다가 자기가 매일 하던 대로 밖으로
나가는 것을 기다리라고 하였다.
자기는
기도하러 밖으로 나가겠다고 말하였던
것이다.
또 바고아에게도 그와 같은 말을
해 두었다.
[4]모든 사람이 물러가고 낮은
사람이건 높은 사람이건 침실에 남아 있는
사람은 한 사람도 없었다.
유딧은 마음
속으로 이렇게 말하였다. "전능하신 주
하느님,
예루살렘을 높이기 위하여 제
손으로 하려는 일을 돌보아 주십시오.
[5]지금이 바로 당신의 유산을 확보할
때이며 우리에게 대들던 원수들을
쳐부수려는 저의 계획을 실행할 때입니다."
[6]유딧은 홀로페르네스의 머리맡에
있는 침대기둥 쪽으로 가서 거기 걸려
있는 그의 칼을 집어 내렸다.
[7]그리고 침대로 다가 와
홀로페르네스의 머리털을 움켜 잡고 "이스라엘의
주 하느님,
오늘 저에게 힘을 주십시오"
하고 말하였다.
[8]그리고 있는 힘을 다하여
홀로페르네스의 목덜미를 두 번 내리쳐서
그의 머리를 잘라 버렸다.
[9]그리고 나서 그의 몸을 침대에서
굴러 내리고 기둥으로부터 휘장을 걷어서
치워 버렸다.
잠시 후에 유딧은 밖으로
나가 홀로페르네스의 머리를 자기
하녀에게 주었다.
[10]하녀는 그것을 곡식자루 속에
집어 넣었다.
그리고 두 사람은 기도하러
다닐 때처럼 함께 밖으로 나갔다.
그들은
진영을 빠져 나와 거기 있는 계곡을 돌아

원수를 누르는 권능을 이스라엘 사람들
가운데 나타내 보이셨습니다."
[12]그들은 여자의 목소리를 듣고
성문으로 서둘러 내려 갔다.
그리고
도성의 원로들을 불러 모았다.
[13]유딧이 돌아 왔다는 것이 너무나
뜻밖이어서 낮은 사람으로부터 높은
사람에 이르기까지 모두가 달려 왔다.
그들은 성문을 열고 유딧과 그의 하녀를
맞아 들였다.
그리고 불을 피워 밝게 한
다음 그 여자들을 둘러 쌌다.
[14]유딧은 큰 소리로 그들에게
말하였다. "하느님을 찬양하시오.
찬양하고 또 찬양하시오.
이스라엘
집안에서 자비의 손길을 떼지 않으시고
바로 이 밤에 나의 손을 통해서 우리의
원수들을 쳐부수셨습니다."
[15]유딧은 자루에서 홀로페르네스의
머리를 꺼내어 그들에게 보여 주며 다음과
같이 말하였다. "자 보시오.
아시리아
총사령관 홀로페르네스의 머리가 여기
있습니다.
또 휘장이 여기 있습니다.
그
안에서 홀로페르네스가 잔뜩 취해 가지고
누워 있었습니다.
주님께서는 여자의 손을
통하여 그를 치셨습니다.
[16]내 길을 걸어 갈 때 나를 지켜
주신 주님 만세!
내 얼굴이 그를 유혹하여
그를 죽게 했을 망정 그는 나를 범하여
더럽히거나 욕을 보이지는 못했습니다."
[17]모든 사람은 대단히 놀라서 꿇어
엎드려 하느님을 경배하며 소리를 합하여
말하였다. "오늘 당신 백성의 원수들을
없애 버리신 우리 하느님 찬미받으소서."
[18]그러자 우찌야가 유딧에게
말하였다. "당신은 이 세상 어느 여자
보다도 지극히 높으신 하느님 앞에서
복받은 여자입니다.
천지를 창조하신
하느님,
우리 원수의 대장의 목을 자르게
해 주신 하느님,
찬미받으소서.
[19]당신이 희망하던 일이 사람들의
마음에서 사라지지 않을 것이고 그들은
하느님의 강한 힘을 길이 기억할 것입니다.
[20]당신은 우리 민족이 굴욕을
당하였을 때에 자기의 목숨을 아끼지 않고
도리어 우리 하느님 앞에서 곧바로 걸어
감으로써 우리들에게 닥쳐 온 재난을
물리쳤습니다.
이와 같은 당신의 성취한
일들을,
하느님께서 길이 높이시고 좋은
상을 내려 주시기 바랍니다."
모든
백성들이 "아멘,
아멘"
하고
응답하였다.

[1] Then Judith said to them, "Listen to me,
my brethren, and take this head and hang it upon the
parapet of your wall.
[2] And as soon as morning comes and the sun
rises, let every valiant man take his weapons and go out
of the city, and set a captain over them, as if you were
going down to the plain against the Assyrian outpost;
only do not go down.
[3] Then they will seize their arms and go into
the camp and rouse the officers of the Assyrian army;
and they will rush into the tent of Holofernes, and will
not find him. Then fear will come over them, and they
will flee before you,
[4] and you and all who live within the borders
of Israel shall pursue them and cut them down as they
flee.
[5] But before you do all this, bring Achior the
Ammonite to me, and let him see and recognize the man
who despised the house of Israel and sent him to us as
if to his death."
[6] So they summoned Achior from the house of
Uzziah. And when he came and saw the head of Holofernes
in the hand of one of the men at the gathering of the
people, he fell down on his face and his spirit failed
him.
[7] And when they raised him up he fell at
Judith's feet, and knelt before her, and said,
"Blessed are you in every tent of Judah! In every
nation those who hear your name will be alarmed.
[8] Now tell me what you have done during these
days." Then Judith described to him in the presence
of the people all that she had done, from the day she
left until the moment of her speaking to them.
[9] And when she had finished, the people raised
a great shout and made a joyful noise in their city.
[10] And when Achior saw all that the God of
Israel had done, he believed firmly in God, and was
circumcised, and joined the house of Israel, remaining
so to this day.
[11] As soon as it was dawn they hung the head of
Holofernes on the wall, and every man took his weapons,
and they went out in companies to the passes in the
mountains.
[12] And when the Assyrians saw them they sent
word to their commanders, and they went to the generals
and the captains and to all their officers.
[13] So they came to Holofernes' tent and said to
the steward in charge of all his personal affairs,
"Wake up our lord, for the slaves have been so bold
as to come down against us to give battle, in order to
be destroyed completely."
[14] So Bagoas went in and knocked at the door of
the tent, for he supposed that he was sleeping with
Judith.
[15] But when no one answered, he opened it and
went into the bedchamber and found him thrown down on
the platform dead, with his head cut off and missing.
[16] And he cried out with a loud voice and wept
and groaned and shouted, and rent his garments.
[17] Then he went to the tent where Judith had
stayed, and when he did not find her he rushed out to
the people and shouted,
[18] "The slaves have tricked us! One Hebrew
woman has brought disgrace upon the house of King
Nebuchadnezzar! For look, here is Holofernes lying on
the ground, and his head is not on him!"
[19] When the leaders of the Assyrian army heard
this, they rent their tunics and were greatly dismayed,
and their loud cries and shouts arose in the midst of
the camp.

그들에게 지휘관을 앞세워 아시리아군의
초소로 향하여 평야로 내려 가는
체하십시오.
그러나 당신들은 그리로 내려
가지 마십시오.
[3]아시리아 군인들은 무기를 가지고
그들의 진영으로 서둘러 돌아 가서 그들의
군대 참모들을 때울 것입니다.
참모들은
홀로페르네스의 천막으로 달려 가겠지요.
그러나 그를 보지 못하게 되면,
그들은
겁을 집어 먹고 당신들 앞에서 달아나
버릴 것입니다.
[4]당신들은 물론 이스라엘 땅에 사는
모든 사람들은 그들을 쫓아 가 달아나는
그들을 쳐죽이십시오.

부들부들 떨 것입니다.
[8]요사이 당신이 하신 모든 일들을
지금 나에게 들려 주십시오."
그래서
유딧은 모든 사람들 앞에서 자기가 떠나던
날부터 그들에게 이야기를 시작하던 그
때까지 자기가 한 모든 일을 낱낱이
이야기해 주었다.
[9]유딧이 이야기를 마치자 사람들은
큰 소리를 지르고 온 도성에는 환성이
울려 퍼졌다.
[10]아키오르는 그 자리에서 할례를
받고 이스라엘 민족의 한 사람이 되어
오늘에 이르렀다.
[11]동틀 무렵에 사람들은
홀로페르네스의 머리를 망대 위에 걸어
놓았다.
사람들은 모두 각각 자기 무기를
들고 떼를 지어 산길로 나섰다.
[12]아시리아 사람들은 상관에게
전령을 보냈고 또 직속상관들은
고급장교들에게 가서 보고하고
고급장교들은 자기들의 모든 지휘관에게
가서 보고하였다.
[13]그들은 홀로페르네스에게 속한
모든 것을 관리하는 사람에게 말하였다.
"저 노예들이 전멸을 당하려고 감히
우리에게로 내려 와 싸움을 겁니다."
[14]바고아는 천막문을 두드렸다.
그는 홀로페르네스가 유딧과 함께 자고
있다고 생각했던 것이다.

밀고 침실로 들어 가 보니 홀로페르네스는
머리가 달아낸 채로 땅바닥에 나동그라져
있었다.
[16]바고아는 큰 소리를 내어
부르짖으며 울고불고 통곡하였다.
그리고
자기 옷을 찢었다.
[17]그리고 나서 그는 유딧이 머물러
있는 천막으로 들어 가 보았다.
그러나
여자는 없었다.
그래서 그는 사람들에게로
달려 나와 부르짖었다.
[18]"저 노예들이 우리를 속였다.

[1] When the men in the tents heard it, they were
amazed at what had happened.
[2] Fear and trembling came over them, so that
they did not wait for one another, but with one impulse
all rushed out and fled by every path across the plain
and through the hill country.
[3] Those who had camped in the hills around
Bethulia also took to flight. Then the men of Israel,
every one that was a soldier, rushed out upon them.
[4] And Uzziah sent men to Betomasthaim and Bebai
and Choba and Kola, and to all the frontiers of Israel,
to tell what had taken place and to urge all to rush out
upon their enemies to destroy them.
[5] And when the Israelites heard it, with one
accord they fell upon the enemy, and cut them down as
far as Choba. Those in Jerusalem and all the hill
country also came, for they were told what had happened
in the camp of the enemy; and those in Gilead and in
Galilee outflanked them with great slaughter, even
beyond Damascus and its borders.
[6] The rest of the people of Bethulia fell upon
the Assyrian camp and plundered it, and were greatly
enriched.
[7] And the Israelites, when they returned from
the slaughter, took possession of what remained, and the
villages and towns in the hill country and in the plain
got a great amount of booty, for there was a vast
quantity of it.
[8] Then Joakim the high priest, and the senate
of the people of Israel who lived at Jerusalem, came to
witness the good things which the Lord had done for
Israel, and to see Judith and to greet her.
[9] And when they met her they all blessed her
with one accord and said to her, "You are the
exaltation of Jerusalem, you are the great glory of
Israel, you are the great pride of our nation!
[10] You have done all this singlehanded; you
have done great good to Israel, and God is well pleased
with it. May the Almighty Lord bless you for ever!"
And all the people said, "So be it!"
[11] So all the people plundered the camp for
thirty days. They gave Judith the tent of Holofernes and
all his silver dishes and his beds and his bowls and all
his furniture; and she took them and loaded her mule and
hitched up her carts and piled the things on them.
[12] Then all the women of Israel gathered to see
her, and blessed her, and some of them performed a dance
for her; and she took branches in her hands and gave
them to the women who were with her;
[13] and they crowned themselves with olive
wreaths, she and those who were with her; and she went
before all the people in the dance, leading all the
women, while all the men of Israel followed, bearing
their arms and wearing garlands and with songs on their
lips.

[1]천막 안에 있던 사람들도 소식을
듣고 깜짝 놀랐다.
[2]그들은 겁에 질려 떨며 자기
동료를 떠나 일제히 흩어져 산길과 들길로
닥치는 대로 달아났다.
[3]베툴리아를 둘러 싼 산지에 진을
치고 있던 사람들도 달아났다.
그 때에
모든 이스라엘 용사들이 그들을
추격하였다.
[4]우찌야는 베트마스타임,
베배,
코바,
콜라 그리고 이스라엘 전역에
사람을 보내어 지금까지 일어난 모든 일을
알리게 하고 적군을 추격하여
없애버리라고 하였다.
[5]이스라엘 사람들은 이 소식을 듣고
일제히 적군에게 달려들어 코바까지
그들을 쫓아 가 쳐죽였다.
예루살렘과 온
산악지대의 사람들도 적진에서 일어난
일들에 대한 소식을 전해 듣고 공격에
가담하였다.
또 길르앗과 갈릴래아에 사는
사람들도 다마스커스까지 다라가서
적군을 측면으로 공격하여 큰 타격을
주었다.
[6]베툴리아에 남아 있던 주민들은
아시리아 진지로 뛰어 들어 가 재물을
빼앗아 큰 부자가 되었다.
[7]적군을 학살하고 돌아 오던
이스라엘 군인들은 남아 있는 전리품을
차지하였고 산과 평야의 여러 마을
주민들도 많은 전리품을 손에 넣었다.
거기에는 물건이 많이 있었다.
[8]대사제 요야킴과 예루살렘에 살던
모든 주민들은 주님께서 이스라엘에게
나타내신 놀라운 일을 똑똑히 보고 유딧을
만나 축하하려고 왔다.
[9]그들은 모두 찾아 와서 입을 모아
유딧을 축복하였다. "당신은
예루살렘의 영광이요 이스라엘의
영예이며 우리 민족의 자랑입니다.
[10]당신이 모든 일을 당신 손으로
이루었고 이스라엘을 위해 좋은 일을
했습니다.
하느님께서도 이것을 기쁘게
여기십니다.
전능하신 주님의 축복을
영원토록 받기를 빕니다."
그러자 모든
백성들이 "아멘"
하고 응답하였다.
[11]이스라엘 사람들은 삼십 일 동안
적군의 진영을 약탈하였다.
그리고
홀로페르네스가 쓰고 있던 천막과 모든
은붙이와 침상과 그릇과 가구를 유딧에게
주었다.
유딧은 그것을 받아 자기의
나귀에도 실었고 마차를 준비하여 그
위에도 실었다.
[12]이스라엘의 모든 여자들은 유딧을
보려고 달려와서 그 여자를 찬양하였다.
그들 중 몇은 춤과 노래로 유딧을
축하하였다.
유딧은 나뭇가지를 집어다가
자기와 함께 있던 여자들에게 하나씩
나누어 주었다.
[13]유딧과 다른 여자들은 올리브로
관을 만들어 썼다.
그리고 춤을 출 때에
유딧은 여자들을 인도하며 모든 사람들의
앞장을 섰다.
한편 이스라엘의 모든
남자들은 갑옷을 입고 관을 쓰고 노래를
부르면서 그들을 뒤따랐다.
[14]그 때에 유딧은 모든 이스라엘
사람들 앞에서 감사의 노래를 부르기
시작하였다.
모든 사람들이 큰 소리로
합창하였다.

[1] Then Judith began this thanksgiving before
all Israel, and all the people loudly sang this song of
praise.
[2] And Judith said, Begin a song to my God with
tambourines,
sing to my Lord with cymbals.
Raise to him a new psalm;
exalt him, and call upon his name.
[3] For God is the Lord who crushes wars;
for he has delivered me out of the hands of my pursuers,
and brought me to his camp, in the midst of the people.
[4] The Assyrian came down from the mountains of
the north;
he came with myriads of his warriors;
their multitude blocked up the valleys,
their cavalry covered the hills.
[5] He boasted that he would burn up my
territory,
and kill my young men with the sword,
and dash my infants to the ground
and seize my children as prey,
and take my virgins as booty.
[6] But the Lord Almighty has foiled them
by the hand of a woman.
[7] For their mighty one did not fall by the
hands
of the young men,
nor did the sons of the Titans smite him,
nor did tall giants set upon him;
but Judith the daughter of Merari undid him
with the beauty of her countenance.
[8] For she took off her widow's mourning
to exalt the oppressed in Israel.
She anointed her face with ointment
and fastened her hair with a tiara
and put on a linen gown to deceive him.
[9] Her sandal ravished his eyes,
her beauty captivated his mind,
and the sword severed his neck.
[10] The Persians trembled at her boldness,
the Medes were daunted at her daring.
[11] Then my oppressed people shouted for joy;
my weak people shouted and the enemy trembled;
they lifted up their voices, and the enemy were turned
back.
[12] The sons of maidservants have pierced them
through;
they were wounded like the children of fugitives,
they perished before the army of my Lord.
[13] I will sing to my God a new song:
O Lord, thou are great and glorious,
wonderful in strength, invincible.
[14] Let all thy creatures serve thee,
for thou didst speak, and they were made.
Thou didst send forth thy Spirit, and it formed them;
there is none that can resist thy voice.
[15] For the mountains shall be shaken to their
foundations with the waters;
at thy presence the rocks shall melt like wax,
but to those who fear thee
thou wilt continue to show mercy.
[16] For every sacrifice as a fragrant offering
is a small thing,
and all fat for burnt offerings to thee is
a very little thing,
but he who fears the Lord shall be great for ever.
[17] Woe to the nations that rise up against my
people!
The Lord Almighty will take vengeance on them
in the day of judgment;
fire and worms he will give to their flesh;
they shall weep in pain for ever.
[18] When they arrived at Jerusalem they
worshiped God. As soon as the people were purified, they
offered their burnt offerings, their freewill offerings,
and their gifts.
[19] Judith also dedicated to God all the vessels
of Holofernes, which the people had given her; and the
canopy which she took for herself from his bedchamber
she gave as a votive offering to the Lord.
[20] So the people continued feasting in
Jerusalem before the sanctuary for three months, and
Judith remained with them.
[21] After this every one returned home to his
own inheritance, and Judith went to Bethulia, and
remained on her estate, and was honored in her time
throughout the whole country.
[22] Many desired to marry her, but she remained
a widow all the days of her life after Manasseh her
husband died and was gathered to his people.
[23] She became more and more famous, and grew
old in her husband's house, until she was one hundred
and five years old. She set her maid free. She died in
Bethulia, and they buried her in the cave of her husband
Manasseh,
[24] and the house of Israel mourned for her
seven days. Before she died she distributed her property
to all those who were next of kin to her husband
Manasseh, and to her own nearest kindred.
[25] And no one ever again spread terror among
the people of Israel in the days of Judith, or for a
long time after her death.

[1]"북을 치며 우리 하느님을
찬양합시다.
징을 치며 주님을 노래합시다.
시와 노래로 그분을 찬양하고 그분의
이름을 높이며 크게 불러 봅시다.
[2]주님은 전쟁을 쳐부수시는
하느님이십니다.
이 몸을 원수들의 손에서
건져 주시고 백성들 가운데 마련하신
당신의 진영 안으로 인도하셨습니다.
[3]아시리아 사람이 수많은 군대를
거느리고 북쪽 산으로부터 내려왔습니다.
그 수많은 군대가 모든 골짜기를 메우고
그 기병대는 모든 언덕을 뒤덮었습니다.
[4]그는 우리나라에 불을 지르고 우리
청년들을 칼로 찌르고 젖먹이들을 땅에
내던지고 어린이들을 붙잡아 가고
처녀들을 납치해 가겠다고
큰소리쳤습니다.
[5]그러나 전능하신 주님께서는
여성의 손을 통해서 원수들을
물리치셨습니다.
[6]그들 가운데 제일 강한 용사를
젊은이들이 쓰러뜨린 것도 아니오,
거인들이 때려 눕힌 것도 아니요,
키 큰
장수들이 눌러 버린 것도 아니요,
므라리의 딸 유딧이 자기의 아름다운
얼굴로 꼼짝 못하게 만든 것입니다.
[7]유딧은 과부의 상복을 벗어 버리고
고통당하는 이스라엘 사람들을 이끌어
올렸습니다.
[8]유딧은 향유를 얼굴에 바르고
처네로 머리를 꾸미고 고운 천으로 만든
옷을 걸치고 그를 속였습니다.
[9]유딧의 신이 그의 눈을 낚아 채고
유딧의 아름다움이 그의 영혼을
사로잡았습니다.
칼이 그의 목을 베어
버렸습니다.
[10]페르샤인들은 유딧의 과감한
행동에 소스라치고 메대인들은 유딧의
용기에 떨었습니다.
[11]그 때 멸시받던 내 백성이 고함을
치고 연약하던 내 백성이 큰 소리를
지르니 원수들은 겁을 먹고 질려
버렸습니다.
내 백성이 더 크게 외치니
원수들은 달아나 버렸습니다.
[12]종의 자식들도 그들을 무찌르고
달아나는 종을 다루듯이 상처를
입혔습니다.
원수들은 우리 주님의
군대에게 전멸되었습니다.
[13]나는 내 하느님께 새 노래를
부르겠습니다.
주님,
주님은 위대하시고
영광스러운 분이십니다.
주님의 힘은
참으로 놀라우시고 아무도 대적할 수
없습니다.
[14]당신의 모든 피조물은 당신을
섬겨야 합니다.
모든 피조물은 당신의
말씀으로 생겨 났습니다.
당신께서 입김을
