[1] In the twelfth year of the reign of
Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled over the Assyrians in the
great city of Nineveh, in the days of Arphaxad, who
ruled over the Medes in Ecbatana --
[2] he is the king who built walls about Ecbatana
with hewn stones three cubits thick and six cubits long;
he made the walls seventy cubits high and fifty cubits
wide;
[3] at the gates he built towers a hundred cubits
high and sixty cubits wide at the foundations;
[4] and he made its gates, which were seventy
cubits high and forty cubits wide, so that his armies
could march out in force and his infantry form their
ranks --
[5] it was in those days that King Nebuchadnezzar
made war against King Arphaxad in the great plain which
is on the borders of Ragae.
[6] He was joined by all the people of the hill
country and all those who lived along the Euphrates and
the Tigris and the Hydaspes and in the plain where
Arioch ruled the Elymaeans. Many nations joined the
forces of the Chaldeans.
[7] Then Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians
sent to all who lived in Persia and to all who lived in
the west, those who lived in Cilicia and Damascus and
Lebanon and Antilebanon and all who lived along the
seacoast,
[8] and those among the nations of Carmel and
Gilead, and Upper Galilee and the great Plain of
Esdraelon,
[9] and all who were in Samaria and its
surrounding towns, and beyond the Jordan as far as
Jerusalem and Bethany and Chelous and Kadesh and the
river of Egypt, and Tahpanhes and Raamses and the whole
land of Goshen,
[10] even beyond Tanis and Memphis, and all who
lived in Egypt as far as the borders of Ethiopia.
[11] But all who lived in the whole region
disregarded the orders of Nebuchadnezzar king of the
Assyrians, and refused to join him in the war; for they
were not afraid of him, but looked upon him as only one
man, and they sent back his messengers empty-handed and
shamefaced.
[12] Then Nebuchadnezzar was very angry with this
whole region, and swore by his throne and kingdom that
he would surely take revenge on the whole territory of
Cilicia and Damascus and Syria, that he would kill them
by the sword, and also all the inhabitants of the land
of Moab, and the people of Ammon, and all Judea, and
every one in Egypt, as far as the coasts of the two
seas.
[13] In the seventeenth year he led his forces
against King Arphaxad, and defeated him in battle, and
overthrew the whole army of Arphaxad, and all his
cavalry and all his chariots.
[14] Thus he took possession of his cities, and
came to Ecbatana, captured its towers, plundered its
markets, and turned its beauty into shame.
[15] He captured Arphaxad in the mountains of
Ragae and struck him down with hunting spears; and he
utterly destroyed him, to this day.
[16] Then he returned with them to Nineveh, he
and all his combined forces, a vast body of troops; and
there he and his forces rested and feasted for one
hundred and twenty days. |
[1]대도시 니느웨에서 아시리아를
통치하고 있던 느부갓네살왕 제십이 년에
있었던 일이다. 그 때에 메대인의 왕
아르박삿은 엑바타나에서 백성을
다스리며
[2]엑바타나 주위에 높이 백 오 척,
두께 칠십 오 척 되는 성을 쌓았는데
거기에 폭 사 척반, 길이 구 척으로 다음은
돌을 사용하였다.
[3]그리고 그 성문마다 구십 척
나비로 기초를 닦고 거기에 높이 백 오십
척 되는 탑을 세웠다.
[4]그 성문은 높이가 백 오 척,
나비가
육십 척이나 되게 만들었기 때문에 많은
군대가 한꺼번에 통과할 수 있었고
보병대는 대오를 지어서 행진해 나갈 수
있었다.
[5]그 무렵에 느부갓네살왕이
아르박삿왕에게 싸움을 걸어서 라가오
지방의 대평야에서 싸우게 되었다.
[6]그래서 산간 지방에 사는 모든
사람들과 유프라테스,
티그리스,
히다스페스강 가에 사는 모든 주민들과
엘람사람들의 왕 아료의 지배하에 있는
평원의 모든 사람들이 아르박삿왕 밑으로
모여 들었다. 그리고 다른 많은 백성들도
켈레우드 사람들과의 싸움에 가담하려고
모여 들었다.
[7]그래서 아시리아의
느부갓네살왕은 다음과 같은 여러 지방에
사는 사람들에게 사신을 보냈다.
페르샤를
비롯하여 길리기아, 다마스커스,
레바논,
안티레바논 등 서고 여러 지방,
지중해
연안지방,
[8]가르멜,
길르앗, 상부 갈릴래야,
에스드렐론의 대평야,
[9]사마리아와 그 지방 도시들과
요르단강 서쪽, 예루살렘,
베다니아,
켈루스, 카데스,
에집트의 강, 다흐반헤스,
라므세스, 고셀,
[10]타니스,
멤피스, 에디오피아
접경에 이르기까지의 온 에집트 지방에
사는 사람들에게 사신을 보냈던 것이다.
[11]이 온 지방의 여러 주민들은
모두가 아시리아의 왕 느부갓네살왕의
명령을 우습게 여기고 그 전쟁에 가담하지
않았다. 그들은 왕을 한낱 하나의
인간으로밖에 취급하지 않았기 때문에
그를 무서워하지 않고 그 사신들에게
치욕을 주어 빈손으로 돌려 보냈다.
[12]그래서 이 온 지방 사람들에 대한
느부갓네살왕의 노여움은 극도에 달했다.
그는 지중해와 페르샤 사이에 있는 지방,
즉 길리기아와 다마스커스,
시리아의 모든
지방, 모압 지방의 모든 주민,
암몬 사람들,
전 유다와 에집트의 모든 주민들을 한
칼로 무찔러 복수하겠다고 자기 왕위와
왕국을 걸어 맹세하였다.
[13]그리고 느부갓네살왕은 제십 칠
년에 아르박삿왕을 치러 군대를
진격시켜서 일대 교전을 한 끝에 그의
군대를 무찔렀다. 그래서 아르박삿왕의 전
군대와 전 기병대와 모든 전차대를
분쇄하였다.
[14]왕은 메대의 여러 도시를
점령하고 엑바타나까지 진격하여 그
탑들을 빼앗고 시장을 약탈하였다.
그리하여 엑바타나의 영화는 치욕으로
변했다.
[15]왕은 아르박삿을 라가오산 속에서
생포하여 창으로 찔러 완전히 없애 버렸다.
[16]왕은 자기 군대와 자기에게
합세했던 여러 민족의 군대를 거느리고
니느웨로 개선하였다.
그리고 자기 군대와
함께 백 이십 일 동안 충분히 휴식하며
잔치를 베풀었다. |

[1] In the eighteenth year, on the twenty-second
day of the first month, there was talk in the palace of
Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians about carrying out
his revenge on the whole region, just as he said.
[2] He called together all his officers and all
his nobles and set forth to them his secret plan and
recounted fully, with his own lips, all the wickedness
of the region;
[3] and it was decided that every one who had not
obeyed his command should be destroyed.
[4] When he had finished setting forth his plan,
Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians called Holofernes,
the chief general of his army, second only to himself,
and said to him,
[5] "Thus says the Great King, the lord of
the whole earth: When you leave my presence, take with
you men confident in their strength, to the number of
one hundred and twenty thousand foot soldiers and twelve
thousand cavalry.
[6] Go and attack the whole west country, because
they disobeyed my orders.
[7] Tell them to prepare earth and water, for I
am coming against them in my anger, and will cover the
whole face of the earth with the feet of my armies, and
will hand them over to be plundered by my troops,
[8] till their wounded shall fill their valleys,
and every brook and river shall be filled with their
dead, and overflow;
[9] and I will lead them away captive to the ends
of the whole earth.
[10] You shall go and seize all their territory
for me in advance. They will yield themselves to you,
and you shall hold them for me till the day of their
punishment.
[11] But if they refuse, your eye shall not spare
and you shall hand them over to slaughter and plunder
throughout your whole region.
[12] For as I live, and by the power of my
kingdom, what I have spoken my hand will execute.
[13] And you -- take care not to transgress any
of your sovereign's commands, but be sure to carry them
out just as I have ordered you; and do not delay about
it."
[14] So Holofernes left the presence of his
master, and called together all the commanders,
generals, and officers of the Assyrian army,
[15] and mustered the picked troops by divisions
as his lord had ordered him to do, one hundred and
twenty thousand of them, together with twelve thousand
archers on horseback,
[16] and he organized them as a great army is
marshaled for a campaign.
[17] He collected a vast number of camels and
asses and mules for transport, and innumerable sheep and
oxen and goats for provision;
[18] also plenty of food for every man, and a
huge amount of gold and silver from the royal palace.
[19] So he set out with his whole army, to go
ahead of King Nebuchadnezzar and to cover the whole face
of the earth to the west with their chariots and
horsemen and picked troops of infantry.
[20] Along with them went a mixed crowd like a
swarm of locusts, like the dust of the earth -- a
multitude that could not be counted.
[21] They marched for three days from Nineveh to
the plain of Bectileth, and camped opposite Bectileth
near the mountain which is to the north of Upper
Cilicia.
[22] From there Holofernes took his whole army,
his infantry, cavalry, and chariots, and went up into
the hill country
[23] and ravaged Put and Lud, and plundered all
the people of Rassis and the Ishmaelites who lived along
the desert, south of the country of the Chelleans.
[24] Then he followed the Euphrates and passed
through Mesopotamia and destroyed all the hilltop cities
along the brook Abron, as far as the sea.
[25] He also seized the territory of Cilicia, and
killed every one who resisted him, and came to the
southern borders of Japheth, fronting toward Arabia.
[26] He surrounded all the Midianites, and burned
their tents and plundered their sheepfolds.
[27] Then he went down into the plain of Damascus
during the wheat harvest, and burned all their fields
and destroyed their flocks and herds and sacked their
cities and ravaged their lands and put to death all
their young men with the edge of the sword.
[28] So fear and terror of him fell upon all the
people who lived along the seacoast, at Sidon and Tyre,
and those who lived in Sur and Ocina and all who lived
in Jamnia. Those who lived in Azotus and Ascalon feared
him exceedingly.

2 장
[1]아시리아의 느부갓네살왕 제십 팔
년 일월 이십 이일 왕은 이미 자기가
맹세한 대로 자기의 명령을 거역했던 전
지역에 대한 복수를 논의하기 위해서
궁전에 회의를 소집하였다.
[2]왕은 모든 신화와 귀족들을 불러
놓고 비밀회담을 하며 이 전 지역을
송두리째 없애 버릴 뜻을 자기 입으로
명백히 하였다.
[3]그래서 그들은 왕의 명령을 거역한
자들을 없애 버리기로 결의하였다.
[4]회의가 끝나자,
아시리아의
느부갓네살왕은 자기 군대 총사령관이며
왕 다음가는 지위에 있는 홀로페르네스를
불러서 다음과 같이 일렀다.
[5]"온 땅의 주인인 대왕의 말을
들으시오. 경은 이 자리를 물러가서
용감무쌍한 보병 십 이만과 기병 일만
이천 기를 거느리고,
[6]내 입에서 떨어진 명령을 감히
불복한 자들이 사는 서방의 전 지역을
치러 가시오.
[7]그들에게 무조건 항복하라고
전하시오. 내가 대단히 노하여 그들에게
진군할 것이며 그들의 온 땅을 나의
군대가 짓밟을 것이며
[8]산골짜기는 부상자들로 메워질
것이고 흐르는 강은 시체로 메워져 넘쳐
흐를 것이오.
[9]그리고 그들을 사로잡아서 땅
끝으로 쫓아 버리겠소.
[10]자 나가시오.
경은 나보다 먼저
가서 그들의 땅을 점령하시오.
그들이
항복하거든 내가 가서 처벌하는 날까지
붙들어 두시오.
[11]경이 점령한 땅에서 경에게
불복하는 자가 있거든 가차없이 죽이고 그
재산을 몰수하시오.
[12]나는 내 목숨과 왕권을 걸고 한번
말한 것은 내 손으로 이루고야 마오.
[13]경은, 경의 상전인 나의 명령을 한
마디도 어기지 말고 내가 명령한 대로
지체없이 완수하시오."
[14]그래서 홀로페르네스는 어전에서
물러나와 아시리아군의 모든 장성들과
부대장들과 기타 장교들을 소집하였다.
[15]그리고 왕의 명령대로 정예병 십
이만과 활 소는 기병대 일만 이천 명을
소집하여
[16]전열을 가다듬었다.
[17]짐을 나르기 위해서 엄청난 수의
낙타와 노새와 나귀를 징발시켰고
군량으로는 무수한 양과 소와 염소를
징발하였다.
[18]그리고 각 병사가 먹을 양식을
충분히 마련하였고 국고로부터 많은 금과
은을 받아 가지고 갔다.
[19]그는 느부갓네살왕보다 앞서서
서방의 온 지역을 전차대와 기병대와
정예보병대로 휩쓸려고 자기 전군을
이끌고 출발하였다.
[20]이 밖에도 그를 따라 간 잡다한
군대의 수는 메뚜기떼나 땅의 모래알처럼
이루 다 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 많았다.
[21]홀로페르네스는 니느웨를 출발한
지 삼 일만에 백티렛의 평야 가까이까지
진군하였다. 그리고 상부 길리기아 북쪽에
있는 산 근처에서 백티렛을 향하여 진을
쳤다.
[22]거기에서 그는 보병대와 기병대와
전차대의 전군을 이끌고 산악지대로
진격하여
[23]푸트와 룻을 짓밟고 라시스
사람들과 켈레아 남쪽의 사막 근처에사는
이스마엘 사람들을 약탈하였다.
[24]그리고 그는 유프라테스강을 따라
메소포타미아 지방을 횡단하면서
아브로나 계곡에 있는 여러 요새도시를
섬멸하고 마침내 지중해에 이르렀다.
[25]이어서 길리기아 지방을 점령하고
반항하는 자들을 모두 죽여 버리고

접경까지 진군하였다.
[26]그리고 마디안 사람들을 모조리
포위하고 그들의 천막을 불사른 다음,
가축을 약탈하였다.
[27]밀 수확이 한창일 때에 그는
다마스커스 평야로 내려가 밀밭을
불사르고 소와 양떼를 쓸어 버리고 여러
도시들을 약탈한 다음,
전답을 짓밟고
젊은이들을 모두 칼로 찔러 죽였다.
[28]그래서 지중해 연안 시돈과
띠로의 해안지방에 사는 모든 사람들과
수르, 오끼나,
얌니아에 사는 모든
사람들은 그를 무서워 하며 덜덜 떨었다.
아조토와 아스칼론에 사는 사람들도 그를
몹시 무서워 하였다.

[1] So they sent messengers to sue for peace, and
said,
[2] "Behold, we the servants of
Nebuchadnezzar, the Great King, lie prostrate before
you. Do with us whatever you will.
[3] Behold, our buildings, and all our land, and
all our wheat fields, and our flocks and herds, and all
our sheepfolds with their tents, lie before you; do with
them whatever you please.
[4] Our cities also and their inhabitants are
your slaves; come and deal with them in any way that
seems good to you."
[5] The men came to Holofernes and told him all
this.
[6] Then he went down to the seacoast with his
army and stationed garrisons in the hilltop cities and
took picked men from them as his allies.
[7] And these people and all in the country round
about welcomed him with garlands and dances and
tambourines.
[8] And he demolished all their shrines and cut
down their sacred groves; for it had been given to him
to destroy all the gods of the land, so that all nations
should worship Nebuchadnezzar only, and all their
tongues and tribes should call upon him as god.
[9] Then he came to the edge of Esdraelon, near
Dothan, fronting the great ridge of Judea;
[10] here he camped between Geba and Scythopolis,
and remained for a whole month in order to assemble all
the supplies for his army.

3 장
[1]그래서 그들은 홀로페르네스에게
사신들을 보내며 다음과 같은 말로 화평을
청하게 하였다.
[2]"우리는 느부갓네살왕의
종입니다. 이렇게 장군 앞에 엎드렸으니
처분대로 하십시오.
[3]우리들이 사는 집과 모든 토지와
밀밭, 양과 소 그리고 모든 축사들은 다
장군의 처분에 맡깁니다.
[4]우리들의 도서와 그 주민들도 다
장군의 종들이니 오셔서 좋으실대로
처분하십시오."
[5]사신들이 홀로페르네스에게 와서
이와 같은 말을 전하자,
[6]그는 자기 군대를 이끌고
요새도시에 수비병을 배치하고 시민들
중에서 뽑아낸 사람들을 자기 보충병으로
삼았다.
[7]그 곳 주민과 그 주변에 사는 모든
사람들은 화환을 쓰고 북치고 춤추면서
그를 환영하였다.
[8]그러나 이 나라의 모든 신들을
없애 버리라는 사명을 받고 온
홀로페르네스는 그들의 모든 영토를
짓밟고 신들을 모시던 숲을 베어 버린
다음 모든 백성들로 하여금
느부갓네살만을 예배하게 하고 언어와
종족을 가리지 않고 누구나 대왕을 신으로
받들게 하였다.
[9]그리고는 유다의 큰 산악지대
맞은편에 있는 도다인 근처 에스드렐론을
향해서 진격하여
[10]게바와 스키토폴리스 사이에 진을
쳤다. 그리고 그는 군량을 확보하기

[1] By this time the people of Israel living in
Judea heard of everything that Holofernes, the general
of Nebuchadnezzar the king of the Assyrians, had done to
the nations, and how he had plundered and destroyed all
their temples;
[2] they were therefore very greatly terrified at
his approach, and were alarmed both for Jerusalem and
for the temple of the Lord their God.
[3] For they had only recently returned from the
captivity, and all the people of Judea were newly
gathered together, and the sacred vessels and the altar
and the temple had been consecrated after their
profanation.
[4] So they sent to every district of Samaria,
and to Kona and Beth-horon and Belmain and Jericho and
to Choba and Aesora and the valley of Salem,
[5] and immediately seized all the high hilltops
and fortified the villages on them and stored up food in
preparation for war -- since their fields had recently
been harvested.
[6] And Joakim, the high priest, who was in
Jerusalem at the time, wrote to the people of Bethulia
and Betomesthaim, which faces Esdraelon opposite the
plain near Dothan,
[7] ordering them to seize the passes up into the
hills, since by them Judea could be invaded, and it was
easy to stop any who tried to enter, for the approach
was narrow, only wide enough for two men at the most.
[8] So the Israelites did as Joakim the high
priest and the senate of the whole people of Israel, in
session at Jerusalem, had given order.
[9] And every man of Israel cried out to God with
great fervor, and they humbled themselves with much
fasting.
[10] They and their wives and their children and
their cattle and every resident alien and hired laborer
and purchased slave -- they all girded themselves with
sackcloth.
[11] And all the men and women of Israel, and
their children, living at Jerusalem, prostrated
themselves before the temple and put ashes on their
heads and spread out their sackcloth before the Lord.
[12] They even surrounded the altar with
sackcloth and cried out in unison, praying earnestly to
the God of Israel not to give up their infants as prey
and their wives as booty, and the cities they had
inherited to be destroyed, and the sanctuary to be
profaned and desecrated to the malicious joy of the
Gentiles.
[13] So the Lord heard their prayers and looked
upon their affliction; for the people fasted many days
throughout Judea and in Jerusalem before the sanctuary
of the Lord Almighty.
[14] And Joakim the high priest and all the
priests who stood before the Lord and ministered to the
Lord, with their loins girded with sackcloth, offered
the continual burnt offerings and the vows and freewill
offerings of the people.
[15] With ashes upon their turbans, they cried
out to the Lord with all their might to look with favor
upon the whole house of Israel.

4 장
[1]유다의 이스라엘 사람들은
아시리아 왕 느부갓네살의 총사령관인
홀로페르네스가 여러 민족을 굴복시키고
그들의 신전 무참히 약탈하고 파괴해
버렸다는 소리를 들었다.
[2]그래서 이스라엘 사람들은
홀로페르네스를 눈앞에 보면서 무서워
떨었고, 예루살렘과 그들의 주 하느님을
생각하며 안절부절 못하였다.
[3]그들이 포로생활로부터 돌아 온
지도 얼마 되지 않았고 유다의 모든
백성들이 한 곳에 모이게 된 것도 최근의
일이었으며 더럽혀졌던 성전과 기물과
제단을 깨끗이 한 것도 바로 엊그제
일이었던 것이다.
[4]그래서 그들을 사마리아,
코나,
벳호론, 벨마인,
예리고 등 여러 지방과
코바, 아이소라,
살렘 계곡으로 사람을
보내어
[5]높은 산 꼭대기를 모두 먼저
확보하게 하고 촌락들은 성을 쌓게 하였다.
마침 추수가 끝난 때였기 때문에 전쟁
준비로 식량을 마련해 놓으라고 하였다.
[6]당시 예루살렘의 대사제였던
요야킴은 도다인 근처의 평원을 향하고
있는 에스드렐론의 맞은편에 있는
베툴리아와 베트마스타임에 있는
주민들에게 편지를 보내어
[7]산간지방에 여러 통로들을
고수하라고 명령하였다.
이 통로들은
유다로 들어 가는 관문으로서 겨우 두
사람이 통행할 수 있을 정도로 좁았기
때문에 침입자들을 쉽게 막을 수 있는
곳이었다.
[8]이 통고를 받은 온 이스라엘
사람들은 대사제 요야킴과 이스라엘 모든
백성의 원로들이 예루살렘에 모여서
결정한 명령을 수행하였다.
[9]모든 이스라엘 사람들은 지극히
겸손한 마음으로 하느님께 열렬히
애원하였다.
[10]그들 자신은 물론 처자,
가축,
동거인, 일꾼,
팔려 온 노예까지도 모두
베옷을 몸에 걸쳤다.
[11]예루살렘에 사는 사람들은 남녀를
가리지 않고 아이들까지도 성전 앞에
엎드렸고 머리 위에 재를 뿌리며 주님
앞에 베옷을 펼쳐 깔고
[12]제단 주위를 삼베로 둘렀다.
그리고는 마음을 합하여 이스라엘의
하느님께 간절히 부르짖으며,
자기
자녀들이 원수들의 밥이 되지 않게,
자기의 아내들이 포로로 끌려 가지 않게,
조상이 물려준 도시들이 파멸되지 않게
그리고 성전이 이방인들의 손에
더럽혀지거나 치욕거리가 되거나
웃음거리가 되지 않게 해 달라고 하였다.
[13]주님께서는 그들이 부르짖는
소리를 들어 주시고 그들이 괴로와하는
모습을 보시고 측은히 여기셨다.
온
유다와 예루살렘에 사는 사람들이
전능하신 주님의 성전 앞에서 여러 날
단식을 하였다.
[14]대사제 요야킴과 주님 앞에 서는
모든 사제들과 주님을 섬기는 모든
사람들은 베옷을 입고,
날마다 드리는
번제를 드렸으며 하느님과의 맹약의
표시로 백성들이 바치는 제물과 자유로
드리는 예물을 드렸다.
[15]그들은 머릿수건 위에 재를
뿌리고 주님께 힘껏 부르짖으며
이스라엘의 모든 집안을 은총으로 보살펴
주시기를 애원하였다.

[1] When Holofernes, the general of the Assyrian
army, heard that the people of Israel had prepared for
war and had closed the passes in the hills and fortified
all the high hilltops and set up barricades in the
plains,
[2] he was very angry. So he called together all
the princes of Moab and the commanders of Ammon and all
the governors of the coastland,
[3] and said to them, "Tell me, you
Canaanites, what people is this that lives in the hill
country? What cities do they inhabit? How large is their
army, and in what does their power or strength consist?
Who rules over them as king, leading their army?
[4] And why have they alone, of all who live in
the west, refused to come out and meet me?"
[5] Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites,
said to him, "Let my lord now hear a word from the
mouth of your servant, and I will tell you the truth
about this people that dwells in the nearby mountain
district. No falsehood shall come from your servant's
mouth.
[6] This people is descended from the Chaldeans.
[7] At one time they lived in Mesopotamia,
because they would not follow the gods of their fathers
who were in Chaldea.
[8] For they had left the ways of their
ancestors, and they worshiped the God of heaven, the God
they had come to know; hence they drove them out from
the presence of their gods; and they fled to
Mesopotamia, and lived there for a long time.
[9] Then their God commanded them to leave the
place where they were living and go to the land of
Canaan. There they settled, and prospered, with much
gold and silver and very many cattle.
[10] When a famine spread over Canaan they went
down to Egypt and lived there as long as they had food;
and there they became a great multitude -- so great that
they could not be counted.
[11] So the king of Egypt became hostile to them;
he took advantage of them and set them to making bricks,
and humbled them and made slaves of them.
[12] Then they cried out to their God, and he
afflicted the whole land of Egypt with incurable
plagues; and so the Egyptians drove them out of their
sight.
[13] Then God dried up the Red Sea before them,
[14] and he led them by the way of Sinai and
Kadesh-barnea, and drove out all the people of the
wilderness.
[15] So they lived in the land of the Amorites,
and by their might destroyed all the inhabitants of
Heshbon; and crossing over the Jordan they took
possession of all the hill country.
[16] And they drove out before them the
Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Jebusites and the
Shechemites and all the Gergesites, and lived there a
long time.
[17] As long as they did not sin against their
God they prospered, for the God who hates iniquity is
with them.
[18] But when they departed from the way which he
had appointed for them, they were utterly defeated in
many battles and were led away captive to a foreign
country; the temple of their God was razed to the
ground, and their cities were captured by their enemies.
[19] But now they have returned to their God, and
have come back from the places to which they were
scattered, and have occupied Jerusalem, where their
sanctuary is, and have settled in the hill country,
because it was uninhabited.
[20] Now therefore, my master and lord, if there
is any unwitting error in this people and they sin
against their God and we find out their offense, then we
will go up and defeat them.
[21] But if there is no transgression in their
nation, then let my lord pass them by; for their Lord
will defend them, and their God will protect them, and
we shall be put to shame before the whole world."
[22] When Achior had finished saying this, all
the men standing around the tent began to complain;
Holofernes' officers and all the men from the seacoast
and from Moab insisted that he must be put to death.
[23] "For," they said, "we will
not be afraid of the Israelites; they are a people with
no strength or power for making war.
[24] Therefore let us go up, Lord Holofernes, and
they will be devoured by your vast army."

[1]아시리아군의 총사령관
홀로페르네스는 이스라엘 사람들이 전쟁
준비를 하면서 산악지대에 통로를 막을 뿐
아니라 모두 높은 산봉우리에 성을 쌓고
평지에는 방책을 쳤다는 정보를 들었다.
[2]그는 화가 잔뜩 나서 모압의 모든
영주들과 암몬의 지휘관들과 해안지방의
모든 장관들을 불러 놓고,
[3]이렇게 말하였다. "가나안의
주민 여러분, 산간지대에 사는 주민에
관해서 좀 알려 주시오.
그들은 어떤
사람들이오? 그들이 살고 있는 도시의
형편이 어떻소? 그들의 병력은 얼마나
되오? 어떻게 해서 그 군대가 그렇게
강하고 힘있게 되었소?
그 백성을
다스리고 군을 지휘하는 왕이 누구요?
[4]그리고 서방의 주민들 중에
그들만이 나를 거역하고 환영하러 나오지
않았는데 어찌 된 셈이오?"
[5]그러자 암몬 사람들의 총지휘관
아키오르가 나서서 대답하였다. "이
종이 주인님께 말씀드립니다.
주인님이
주둔하고 계시는 이 근방 산악지대 주민에
관한 실정을 그대로 말씀드립니다.
이
종의 입에서는 거짓말이라곤 한 마디도
새어 나오지 않을 것입니다.
[6]그들은 갈대아인의 후예로서,
[7]그들의 조상이 갈대아 땅에서
섬기던 신들을 섬기기가 싫어서
메소포타미아로 옮겨 가서 산 적이 있는
사람들입니다.
[8]그들은 자기 조상들의 생활 관습을
떠나서, 하늘의 하느님을 인정하고
하느님을 예배했던 것입니다.
이렇게
조상의 신들을 버렸기 때문에 그들은 그
앞에서 추방되어 메소포타미아로
도망가서 그 곳에 오랫동안 머물렀습니다.
[9]그들은 그들이 머물러 있는 땅을

빼앗겼던 것입니다.
[19]그러나 지금 그들은 하느님에게
다시 돌아 왔고 여러 곳에 흩어져 살던
사람들이 돌아 와 성전이 있는 예루살렘을
다시 찾았으며 아무도 살지 않던 이
산악지대에 다시 자리를 잡았습니다.
[20]그러니 상전 되시는 주인님,
만일
이 백성이 잘못을 저질러 하느님에게 죄를
짓는다면 그것이 그들의 멸망의 원인이 될
터이니 우리는 그 때를 잘 살폈다가 올라
가서 그들을 쳐부숩시다.
[21]그러나 그 백성이 율법을 어기는
일이 없다면 그들의 주님인 하느님이
그들을 잘 지켜 줄터이니 주인님은 그들을
내버려 두십시오. 잘못하다가는 우리가
세상의 웃음거리가 될 것입니다."
[22]아키오르가 말을 마치자 천막
주위에 둘러 섰던 사람들은 모두 웅성대기
시작했고, 홀로페르네스 밑에 있는
지휘관들과 해안지방에 사는 사람들과
모압의 주민들을 아키오를 사형에
처하라고 주장하면서 이렇게 말하였다.
[23]"우리는 이스라엘 사람들을
조금도 무서워할 필요가 없습니다.

[1] When the disturbance made by the men outside
the council died down, Holofernes, the commander of the
Assyrian army, said to Achior and all the Moabites in
the presence of all the foreign contingents:
[2] "And who are you, Achior, and you
hirelings of Ephraim, to prophesy among us as you have
done today and tell us not to make war against the
people of Israel because their God will defend them? Who
is God except Nebuchadnezzar?
[3] He will send his forces and will destroy them
from the face of the earth, and their God will not
deliver them -- we the king's servants will destroy them
as one man. They cannot resist the might of our cavalry.
[4] We will burn them up, and their mountains
will be drunk with their blood, and their fields will be
full of their dead. They cannot withstand us, but will
utterly perish. So says King Nebuchadnezzar, the lord of
the whole earth. For he has spoken; none of his words
shall be in vain.
[5] "But you, Achior, you Ammonite hireling,
who have said these words on the day of your iniquity,
you shall not see my face again from this day until I
take revenge on this race that came out of Egypt.
[6] Then the sword of my army and the spear of my
servants shall pierce your sides, and you shall fall
among their wounded, when I return.
[7] Now my slaves are going to take you back into
the hill country and put you in one of the cities beside
the passes,
[8] and you will not die until you perish along
with them.
[9] If you really hope in your heart that they
will not be taken, do not look downcast! I have spoken
and none of my words shall fail."
[10] Then Holofernes ordered his slaves, who
waited on him in his tent, to seize Achior and take him
to Bethulia and hand him over to the men of Israel.
[11] So the slaves took him and led him out of
the camp into the plain, and from the plain they went up
into the hill country and came to the springs below
Bethulia.
[12] When the men of the city saw them, they
caught up their weapons and ran out of the city to the
top of the hill, and all the slingers kept them from
coming up by casting stones at them.
[13] However, they got under the shelter of the
hill and they bound Achior and left him lying at the
foot of the hill, and returned to their master.
[14] Then the men of Israel came down from their
city and found him; and they untied him and brought him
into Bethulia and placed him before the magistrates of
their city,
[15] who in those days were Uzziah the son of
Micah, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of
Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel.
[16] They called together all the elders of the
city, and all their young men and their women ran to the
assembly; and they set Achior in the midst of all their
people, and Uzziah asked him what had happened.
[17] He answered and told them what had taken
place at the council of Holofernes, and all that he had
said in the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and all
that Holofernes had said so boastfully against the house
of Israel.
[18] Then the people fell down and worshiped God,
and cried out to him, and said,
[19] "O Lord God of heaven, behold their
arrogance, and have pity on the humiliation of our
people, and look this day upon the faces of those who
are consecrated to thee."
[20] Then they consoled Achior, and praised him
greatly.
[21] And Uzziah took him from the assembly to his
own house and gave a banquet for the elders; and all
that night they called on the God of Israel for help.

[1]회의장을 두러 서 있던 사람들의
웅성대는 소리가 가라앉자,
아시리아군의
총사령관인 홀로페르네스는 여러 나라
사람 앞에서 아키오르와 암몬 사람들에게
다음과 같이 말하였다.
[2]"아키오르,
네가 뭔데 암몬의
용병들을 데리고 와서 오늘 이렇게
우리에게 예언을 하느냐?
이스라엘
사람들이 신의 가호를 받고 있으니 싸움을
하지 말라고? 느부갓네살 외에 또 신이
어디 있단 말이냐? 그분이 파견한 군대가

전멸시키리니, 그들의 하느님이 절대로
그들을 구할 수 없을 것이다.
[3]왕의 종인 우리들은 이스라엘
사람들을 단 한 사람을 처치하듯이 쉽게
때려 눕힐 것이다. 그들은 우리의
기병대를 당해낼 수 없을 것이다.
[4]우리는 그들을 태워 비릴 것이고
산들은 온통 그들의 피로 물들 것이며
평야는 그들의 시체로 가득 찰 것이다.
그들은 도저히 우리를 당해 낼 도리가
없어 전멸할 것이라고 온 땅의 주인이신
느부갓네살왕께서 말씀하셨다.
그분이
한번 말씀하신 것은 꼭 이루어지고야 만다.
[5]이 암몬의 품팔이꾼 아키오르야,
네가 오늘 이따위 수작을 했으니 너는
나에게 큰 죄를 범했다.
너는 오늘부터,
내가 에집트에서 도망나온 그 족속에게
원수를 갚는 그 날까지 내 얼굴을 보지
못할 것이다.
[6]그 때에 내 군대의 칼과 내 종들의
창이 네 옆구리를 꿰뚫을 것이다.
내가
개선하고 돌아 올 때에 너는 이스라엘
사람들의 시체 가운데에 넘어져 있을
것이다.
[7]이제 내 종들이 너를 그
산악지대로 데리고 가서 그리로 가는 길목
가까이에 있는 한 도시에 너를 버려 둘
것이다.
[8]너는 그들이 멸망할 때까지는
연명을 할 것이다.
[9]그들의 도시가 함락되지
않으리라는 희망을 네가 품고 있다면 왜
고개를 들지 못하느냐?
내가 이렇게 한번
말했으니 내가 한번 말한 것은 한 마디도
빠짐없이 다 이루어질 것이다."
[10]홀로페르네스는 막사에서
시중드는 부하들에게 명령하여
아키오르를 붙잡아서 베툴리아로 끌고 가
이스라엘 사람들에게 넘겨 주라고 하였다.
[11]그들은 아키오르를 붙잡아 진영
밖으로 나가 평야로 끌고 간 다음
평야에서 또 산악지대로 올라 가 베툴리아
바로 밑에 있는 샘터에 이르렀다.
[12]산성에 있던 사람들은 그들을
발견하자 무기를 들고 도성에서 나와
산꼭대기로 알라 갔다.
그리고
돌팔매질하는 사람들은 모두 올라 오는
길목을 막고 그들에게 돌을 내려 던졌다.
[13]홀로페르네스의 부하들은 산
밑으로 숨어 들어 가 아키오르를 묶어서
거기에 눕혀 놓은 다음 자기 군주에게로
돌아 갔다.
[14]이스라엘 사람들은 산성에서 내려
와 아키오르에게 가까이 와 결박을 풀어
준 다음 베풀리아로 끌고 가서 그 산성의
어른들 앞에 데리고 갔다.
[15]그 때의 지도자들은 시므온 지파
미가의 아들 우찌야와 고토니엘의 아들
카브리스와 멜키엘의 아들 카루미스였다.
[16]그들은 성의 원로들을 모두
소집하였다. 젊은이들과 여자들까지도
급히 몰려 와서 그 회의에 참석하였다.
그들이 아키오르를 군중 한가운데 세우자,
우찌야가 어떻게 된 일이냐고
아키오르에게 물었다.
[17]아키오르는 홀로페르네스의
전략회의 내용과 자기가 아시리아
지휘관들에게 한 말과 홀로페르네스가
이스라엘 민족에 대해서 거만하게
지껄여댄 말들을 전해 주었다.
[18]이 말을 듣고 사람들은 엎드려서
하느님께 경배하고 큰 소리로 부르짖었다.
[19]"하늘에 계신 주 하느님,
저들의 거만한 꼴을 내려다 보십시오.
우리 백성의 처참한 처지를 불쌍하게
생각하시고 오늘, 하느님께 거룩하게 바친
우리들을 굽어 보소서."
[20]그리고 그들은 아키오르를
위로하며 크게 칭찬하였다.
[21]우찌야는 아키오르를 그
회의장에서 데리고 나와 자기 집으로
인도한 다음, 원로들을 위해서 주연을
베풀었다. 그리고 그들은 그 날 밤을 새워
가며 이스라엘의 하느님께 도움을
청하였다.

[1] The next day Holofernes ordered his whole
army, and all the allies who had joined him, to break
camp and move against Bethulia, and to seize the passes
up into the hill country and make war on the Israelites.
[2] So all their warriors moved their camp that
day; their force of men of war was one hundred and
seventy thousand infantry and twelve thousand cavalry,
together with the baggage and the foot soldiers handling
it, a very great multitude.
[3] They encamped in the valley near Bethulia,
beside the spring, and they spread out in breadth over
Dothan as far as Balbaim and in length from Bethulia to
Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.
[4] When the Israelites saw their vast numbers
they were greatly terrified, and every one said to his
neighbor, "These men will now lick up the face of
the whole land; neither the high mountains nor the
valleys nor the hills will bear their weight."
[5] Then each man took up his weapons, and when
they had kindled fires on their towers they remained on
guard all that night.
[6] On the second day Holofernes led out all his
cavalry in full view of the Israelites in Bethulia,
[7] and examined the approaches to the city, and
visited the springs that supplied their water, and
seized them and set guards of soldiers over them, and
then returned to his army.
[8] Then all the chieftains of the people of Esau
and all the leaders of the Moabites and the commanders
of the coastland came to him and said,
[9] "Let our lord hear a word, lest his army
be defeated.
[10] For these people, the Israelites, do not
rely on their spears but on the height of the mountains
where they live, for it is not easy to reach the tops of
their mountains.
[11] Therefore, my lord, do not fight against
them in battle array, and not a man of your army will
fall.
[12] Remain in your camp, and keep all the men in
your forces with you; only let your servants take
possession of the spring of water that flows from the
foot of the mountain --
[13] for this is where all the people of Bethulia
get their water. So thirst will destroy them, and they
will give up their city. We and our people will go up to
the tops of the nearby mountains and camp there to keep
watch that not a man gets out of the city.
[14] They and their wives and children will waste
away with famine, and before the sword reaches them they
will be strewn about in the streets where they live.
[15] So you will pay them back with evil, because
they rebelled and did not receive you peaceably."
[16] These words pleased Holofernes and all his
servants, and he gave orders to do as they had said.
[17] So the army of the Ammonites moved forward,
together with five thousand Assyrians, and they encamped
in the valley and seized the water supply and the
springs of the Israelites.
[18] And the sons of Esau and the sons of Ammon
went up and encamped in the hill country opposite
Dothan; and they sent some of their men toward the south
and the east, toward Acraba, which is near Chusi beside
the brook Mochmur. The rest of the Assyrian army
encamped in the plain, and covered the whole face of the
land, and their tents and supply trains spread out in
great number, and they formed a vast multitude.
[19] The people of Israel cried out to the Lord
their God, for their courage failed, because all their
enemies had surrounded them and there was no way of
escape from them.
[20] The whole Assyrian army, their infantry,
chariots, and cavalry, surrounded them for thirty-four
days, until all the vessels of water belonging to every
inhabitant of Bethulia were empty;
[21] their cisterns were going dry, and they did
not have enough water to drink their fill for a single
day, because it was measured out to them to drink.
[22] Their children lost heart, and the women and
young men fainted from thirst and fell down in the
streets of the city and in the passages through the
gates; there was no strength left in them any longer.
[23] Then all the people, the young men, the
women, and the children, gathered about Uzziah and the
rulers of the city and cried out with a loud voice, and
said before all the elders,
[24] "God be judge between you and us! For
you have done us a great injury in not making peace with
the Assyrians.
[25] For now we have no one to help us; God has
sold us into their hands, to strew us on the ground
before them with thirst and utter destruction.
[26] Now call them in and surrender the whole
city to the army of Holofernes and to all his forces, to
be plundered.
[27] For it would be better for us to be captured
by them; for we will be slaves, but our lives will be
spared, and we shall not witness the death of our babes
before our eyes, or see our wives and children draw
their last breath.
[28] We call to witness against you heaven and
earth and our God, the Lord of our fathers, who punishes
us according to our sins and the sins of our fathers.
Let him not do this day the things which we have
described!"
[29] Then great and general lamentation arose
throughout the assembly, and they cried out to the Lord
God with a loud voice.
[30] And Uzziah said to them, "Have courage,
my brothers! Let us hold out for five more days; by that
time the Lord our God will restore to us his mercy, for
he will not forsake us utterly.
[31] But if these days pass by, and no help comes
for us, I will do what you say."
[32] Then he dismissed the people to their
various posts, and they went up on the walls and towers
of their city. The women and children he sent home. And
they were greatly depressed in the city.

[1]그 다음날 홀로페르네스는 자기
전군과 자기 편에 든 모든 사람들에게

[20]아시리아군은 보병,
기병,
전차들을 총동원하여 이스라엘 사람들을
에워 싼 채 삼십 사 일이나 끌었다.
베툴리아의 모든 주민들의 물독마다 물이
떨어지고,
[21]저수지는 모두 바닥이 나서,
그들이 마실 물을 제한 해 주었기 때문에
단 하루도 물을 실컷 마실 수가 없었다.
[22]어린이들은 기력을 잃고 부녀들과
젊은이들은 목말라 지쳐서 도성의
길거리와 성으로 통하는 길에 마구
쓰러졌다. 이제는 그들에게 아무런 힘도
없었다.
[23]그래서 청년들,
부녀들, 아이들 할
것 없이 모든 백성이 우찌야와 함께 몰려
가서 그 도성의 모든 지도자들에게 큰
소리로 외치고 원로들에게 대들며 이렇게
말하였다.
[24]"당신들과 우리 중에 누가
옳은지 하느님께서 판단하실 것입니다.
당신들이 아시리아 사람들과 진작 화평을
청하지 않아서 우리에게 큰 손해를
끼쳤습니다.
[25]이제는 우리를 도와 줄 사람이
아무도 없습니다. 하느님께서는 이미
우리를 적군의 손에 넘겨 주셨습니다.
그래서 우리는 그들 앞에서 목마르고
지쳐서 죽게 된 것입니다.
[26]그러니 어서 그들을 불러 들여 온
도성을 그들에게 내어 주시오.
그리하여
홀로페르네스의 부하들과 그의 온 군대가
그것을 차지하도록 하시오.
[27]차라리 우리가 그들에게 붙잡히는
것이 나을 것입니다.
노예가 된다
하더라도 목숨은 건지게 될 것이니
말입니다. 그리고 우리의 어린것들이 죽는
것과 또 우리 처자들의 목숨이 끊어지는
것을 우리 눈으로 보지 않게 될 것입니다.
[28]하느님께서는 우리 죄와 우리
조상들의 죄를 공정하게 심판하시는
분이십니다. 우리는 하늘과 땅과 우리
조상들의 주님이신 하느님의 이름을 불러
맹세하며 여러분에게 분명히 말하는
바입니다. 하느님께서 오늘 이런 일이
일어나지 않도록 해 주시기를 바랍니다."
[29]그러자 거기 모든 사람들
가운데서 큰 울음소리가 일제히 터져
나왔고, 그들은 주 하느님께 큰 소리로
울부짖었다.
[30]그러나 우찌야는 그들에게 이렇게
말하였다. "형제 여러분,
용기를
내십시오. 닷새만 더 참아 봅시다.
그
동안에 우리 주 하느님께서는 우리에게
자비를 베풀어 주실 것입니다.
하느님께서는 우리를 완전히 버리시지는
않을 것입니다.
[31]만일 닷새가 지나도 우리에게
아무런 도움이 오지 않는다면 나는
여러분의 말대로 하겠습니다."
[32]그리고 나서 그는 각각 자기
부서로 사람들을 보냈다.
사람들은 도성의
성벽과 탑으로 돌아 갔다.
그리고
여자들과 아이들은 집으로 돌려 보냈다.
온 도성은 침통한 분위기에 휩싸였다.

[1] At that time Judith heard about these things:
she was the daughter of Merari the son of Ox, son of
Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son
of Gideon, son of Raphaim, son of Ahitub, son of Elijah,
son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of
Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Israel.
[2] Her husband Manasseh, who belonged to her
tribe and family, had died during the barley harvest.
[3] For as he stood overseeing the men who were
binding sheaves in the field, he was overcome by the
burning heat, and took to his bed and died in Bethulia
his city. So they buried him with his fathers in the
field between Dothan and Balamon.
[4] Judith had lived at home as a widow for three
years and four months.
[5] She set up a tent for herself on the roof of
her house, and girded sackcloth about her loins and wore
the garments of her widowhood.
[6] She fasted all the days of her widowhood,
except the day before the sabbath and the sabbath
itself, the day before the new moon and the day of the
new moon, and the feasts and days of rejoicing of the
house of Israel.
[7] She was beautiful in appearance, and had a
very lovely face; and her husband Manasseh had left her
gold and silver, and men and women slaves, and cattle,
and fields; and she maintained this estate.
[8] No one spoke ill of her, for she feared God
with great devotion.
[9] When Judith heard the wicked words spoken by
the people against the ruler, because they were faint
for lack of water, and when she heard all that Uzziah
said to them, and how he promised them under oath to
surrender the city to the Assyrians after five days,
[10] she sent her maid, who was in charge of all
she possessed, to summon Chabris and Charmis, the elders
of her city.
[11] They came to her, and she said to them,
"Listen to me, rulers of the people of Bethulia!
What you have said to the people today is not right; you
have even sworn and pronounced this oath between God and
you, promising to surrender the city to our enemies
unless the Lord turns and helps us within so many days.
[12] Who are you, that have put God to the test
this day, and are setting yourselves up in the place of
God among the sons of men?
[13] You are putting the Lord Almighty to the
test -- but you will never know anything!
[14] You cannot plumb the depths of the human
heart, nor find out what a man is thinking; how do you
expect to search out God, who made all these things, and
find out his mind or comprehend his thought? No, my
brethren, do not provoke the Lord our God to anger.
[15] For if he does not choose to help us within
these five days, he has power to protect us within any
time he pleases, or even to destroy us in the presence
of our enemies.
[16] Do not try to bind the purposes of the Lord
our God; for God is not like man, to be threatened, nor
like a human being, to be won over by pleading.
[17] Therefore, while we wait for his
deliverance, let us call upon him to help us, and he
will hear our voice, if it pleases him.
[18] "For never in our generation, nor in
these present days, has there been any tribe or family
or people or city of ours which worshiped gods made with
hands, as was done in days gone by --
[19] and that was why our fathers were handed
over to the sword, and to be plundered, and so they
suffered a great catastrophe before our enemies.
[20] But we know no other god but him, and
therefore we hope that he will not disdain us or any of
our nation.
[21] For if we are captured all Judea will be
captured and our sanctuary will be plundered; and he
will exact of us the penalty for its desecration.
[22] And the slaughter of our brethren and the
captivity of the land and the desolation of our
inheritance -- all this he will bring upon our heads
among the Gentiles, wherever we serve as slaves; and we
shall be an offense and a reproach in the eyes of those
who acquire us.
[23] For our slavery will not bring us into
favor, but the Lord our God will turn it to dishonor.
[24] "Now therefore, brethren, let us set an
example to our brethren, for their lives depend upon us,
and the sanctuary and the temple and the altar rest upon
us.
[25] In spite of everything let us give thanks to
the Lord our God, who is putting us to the test as he
did our forefathers.
[26] Remember what he did with Abraham, and how
he tested Isaac, and what happened to Jacob in
Mesopotamia in Syria, while he was keeping the sheep of
Laban, his mother's brother.
[27] For he has not tried us with fire, as he did
them, to search their hearts, nor has he taken revenge
upon us; but the Lord scourges those who draw near to
him, in order to admonish them."
[28] Then Uzziah said to her, "All that you
have said has been spoken out of a true heart, and there
is no one who can deny your words.
[29] Today is not the first time your wisdom has
been shown, but from the beginning of your life all the
people have recognized your understanding, for your
heart's disposition is right.
[30] But the people were very thirsty, and they
compelled us to do for them what we have promised, and
made us take an oath which we cannot break.
[31] So pray for us, since you are a devout
woman, and the Lord will send us rain to fill our
cisterns and we will no longer be faint."
[32] Judith said to them, "Listen to me. I
am about to do a thing which will go down through all
generations of our descendants.
[33] Stand at the city gate tonight, and I will
go out with my maid; and within the days after which you
have promised to surrender the city to our enemies, the
Lord will deliver Israel by my hand.
[34] Only, do not try to find out what I plan;
for I will not tell you until I have finished what I am
about to do."
[35] Uzziah and the rulers said to her, "Go
in peace, and may the Lord God go before you, to take
revenge upon our enemies."
[36] So they returned from the tent and went to
their posts.

[1]그 때 므라리의 딸 유딧이 이
소식을 들었다. 므라리는 옥스의 아들이고,
옥스는 요셉의 아들이고 요셉은 오지엘의
아들이고 오지엘은 엘키아의 아들이고
엘키아는 아나니아의 아들이고
아나니아는 기드온의 아들이고 기드온은
라파임의 아들이고 라피임은 아히툽의
아들이고 아히툽은 엘리야의 아들이고
엘리야는 힐키야의 아들이고 힐키야는
엘리압의 아들이고 엘리압은 나타나엘의
아들이고 나타나엘의 살라미엘의
아들이고 사라미엘은 사라사대의
아들이었다.
[2]유딧의 남편은 같은 부족이며 같은
가문에 속하는 므나쎄라는 사람이었는데
그는 보리 추수 때 죽었다.
[3]느나쎄는 밭에서 보릿단을 묶고
있는 사람들을 감독하고 있을 때에
일사병에 걸려 자리에 누워 앓다가 자기가
살던 베툴리아에서 죽었다.
그는 도다인과
발라몬 사이에 있는 들에 조상들과 함께
묻혔다.
[4]그 후 유딧은 삼 년 사 개월 동안
자기 집에서 과부로 살았다.
[5]그 여자는 자기 집 옥상에 천막을
치고 베옷을 입고 과부의;
옷차림으로
지냈다.
[6]유딧은 과부생활하는 동안 안식일
전날과 안식일과 그믐날과 초하룻날과
이스라엘 사람들의 축제일과 경축일을
제쳐 놓고는 하루도 빠짐없이 단식하였다.
[7]그 여자는 매력있고 용모가 대단히
아름다왔다. 뿐만 아니라 남편
므나쎄로부터 금과 은,
남녀 종들 그리고
가축과 토지를 물려받아 그것을 가지고
살았다.
[8]또한 그 여자는 하느님을 무척
공경하는 사람이었기 때문에 그 여자를
비난하는 사람은 아무도 없었다.
[9]유딧은 사람들이 식수 부족으로
절망하여 자기들의 지도자 우찌야를
원망한다는 말을 들었다.
유딧은 우찌야가
그 도성을 닷 새 후에 아시리아
사람들에게 넘겨 주겠다고 약속하면서
백성들에게 한 말을 다 듣게 되었다.
[10]그래서 유딧은 자기의 온 재산을
관리하는 여자 하나를 보내어 그 도성의
원로, 카브리스와 카르미스를 모셔 오게
하였다.
[11]그들이 찾아 오자 유딧은 이렇게
말하였다. "베툴리아 성민들의
지도자이신 여러분, 내 말을 들으시오.
여러분이 오늘 백성들에게 한 그 말씀은
옳지 않습니다. 여러분이 만일 주께서
우리를 며칠 안으로 도우시지 않는다면 이
도시를 우리 원수들에게 넘겨 주겠 다고
하느님 앞에서 맹세한 말이 옳지 못하는
것입니다.
[12]도대체 여러분이 무엇인데 이렇게
오늘 하느님을 시험하는 것입니까?
[13]지금 여러분은 전능하신 주님을
시험해 보지만 결코 아무 것도 알아 내지
못할 것입니다.
[14]여러분은 사람의 마음 속 깊은
곳을 알아 내거나 그의 생각을 파악하지도
못하면서 어떻게 이 모든 것을 만드신
하느님을 깨달을 수 있겠습니까?
안됩니다.
여러분! 주 우리 하느님을 노엽게 해
드리지 맙시다.
[15]비록 하느님께서 꼭 닷새 안으로
우리를 도우실 생각이 없으시더라도
당신께서 원하시는 때에 우리를 보호해
주시기도 하며 그렇지 않으면 우리를 원수
앞에서 멸하게도 하실 수 있는 권능을
가지고 계십니다.
[16]여러분은 주 우리 하느님께서
계획하신 일에 대하여 이렇다 저렇다
말하지 마시오. 하느님은 사람과는 달리
으르거나 달랜다고 해서 움직이시는 분은
아니십니다.
[17]그러니까 하느님께서 우리를
구원해 주시기를 기다리면서 우리를 도와
줍시사고 그분께 간청합시다.
하느님께서
우리가 간청하는 소리를 좋게
생각하신다면 들어 주실 것입니다.
[18]오늘은 물론 우리 세대에
있어서는 어느 부족이든지 어느
씨족이든지간에, 또 어느 지방이든지 어느
도시든지간에 사람의 손으로 만든 우상을
숭배한 사람은 우리 중에 없습니다.
[19]그것 때문에 우리 조상들은 칼에
희생되기도 했고 약탈당하기도 했으며
우리 원수들 앞에 무참하게 쓰러지기도
하였습니다.
[20]우리는 하느님 외에는 다른 신을
섬긴 일이 없습니다.
그러므로 우리와
우리 종족 가운데 한 사람도 저버리지
않으실 줄로 믿습니다.
[21]우리가 붙잡히게 되는 날에는 온
유다 사람들이 붙잡히게 될 것이며 우리
성소는 유린될 것입니다.
그러나
하느님께서는 이 신성모독에 대한 책임을
물으시면서 우리로 하여금 피를 흘리게
하실 것입니다.
[22]그리고 우리가 어디로 잡혀
가든지 이방인 가운데 우리 동포들이
학살당하게 되고 우리 강토는 빼앗기고
우리의 유산은 짓밟히게될 것입니다.
그리하여 우리는 우리를 잡아 간
사람들에게서 수치와 모욕을 당하게 될
것입니다.
[23]우리의 노예생활은 기쁨으로
끝나는 것이 아닙니다.
주 우리
하느님께서는 노예생활을 더욱
수치스럽게 하실 따름입니다.
[24]그러니 형제 여러분,
우리는 이제
동포들에게 모범을 보여 줍시다.
그들의
생명은 물론 성소와 성전과 제단의 안전도
우리에게 달려 있기 때문입니다.
[25]이런 모든 사정에도 불구하고
우리는 하느님께 감사를 드려야 됩니다.
하느님께서는 우리 조상들을
시험하셨듯이 지금 우리를 시험하고
계십니다.
[26]하느님께서 아브라함을 어떻게
하셨는지, 이사악을 어떻게 시험하셨는지,
그리고 시리아의 메소포타미아에서
야곱의 자기 외삼촌 라반의 양떼를 칠
때에 무슨 일이 일어났는지 한번 생각해
보십시오.
[27]그들의 충성심을 단련하시기
위하여 불과 같은 시련을 그들에게
주셨지만, 우리는 그와 같이 처벌하시지
않으셨습니다. 다만 주님께서는 당신께
가까이 가는 사람들을 깨우쳐 주시기
위하여 채찍으로 가르쳐 주실 뿐입니다."
[28]그 때 우찌야는 유딧에게 다음과
같이 말하였다. "당신이 한 말은 모두
진심에서 우러나온 것이기 때문에 반박할
것이 하나도 없습니다.
[29]당신의 지혜가 오늘 새삼스럽게
드러난 것은 아닙니다.
처음부터 당신이
마음씨가 곱고 총명하다는 사실은 모든
사람들이 잘 알고 있는 바였습니다.
[30]그렇지만 사람들이 너무도 목이
말랐기 때문에 우리로 하여금 그런 말을
하게 한 것이며 심지어는 어딜 수 없는
맹세까지 하게 만들었던 것입니다.
[31]당신은 경건한 부인입니다.
우리를 대신해서 주님께 기도해 주십시오.
그러면 주님께서 비를 내리셔서 우리
저수지를 가득차게 해 주실 것입니다.
그렇게 되면 우리는 소멸되지 않을
것입니다."
[32]유딧이 그들에게 말하였다. "내
말을 들으시오. 우리 후손대에 길이 남을
만한 한 가지 일을 이루어 놓겠습니다.
[33]오늘 밤 여러분은 성문 곁에 서
있으시오. 그러면 나는 내 여종 을 데리고
밖으로 나가겠습니다.
우리 도성을
원수들에게 내어 주겠다던 그 날짜 안으로
주님께서는 내 손을 통하여 이스라엘을
구원하실 것입니다.
[34]그러나 내가 하려고 하는 일에
대하여 아무 말도 묻지 마십시오.
내가
하는 일을 다 끝낼 때까지는 여러분에게
알려 드리지 않겠습니다."
[35]우찌야와 다른 지도자들은
유딧에게 이렇게 말하였다. "안녕히
가십시오. 주 하느님께서 당신과 함께
계셔서 우리 원수들을 벌해 주시기를
빕니다."
[36]그리고 나서 그들은 그 집에서
나와 각각 자기 부서로 돌아 갔다.
