Isn't a pacifist just a coward?	평화주의자들은 단순히 겁장이가 아닌가?

"Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me." Matthew 5:11	"나를 인하여 너희를 욕하고 핍박하고 거짓으로 너희를 거스려 모든 악한 말을 할 때에는 너희에게 복이 있나니" 마태복음 5:11
In a perfect world you would be allowed the freedom to advance your case without persecution. In the world we live in, the more sure the argument the greater the persecution. Christian pacifism challenges the status quo to the degree that it becomes an embarrassment to oppose it. To oppose Christian pacifism is to state that it is required, at times, to commit "necessary evils' in the name of Christ, to take up arms to kill and maim, to destroy entire cities, to punish other nations, to commit violent acts as a warning to others, to follow the orders of the State even if those orders are to kill for the purpose of protecting the "common good" of the citizens, and to commit ourselves, our children and our families to the task of continuing the Old Testament precept of an "eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" until all die in a cauldron of violence, all in the name of Lamb of God.	완벽한 세상에서라면 당신의 생각을 박해 받음 없이 제안할 수 있는 자유가 허락될 것입니다. 우리가 사는 세상에서는 논리가 확실하면 할수록, 박해는 더욱 커집니다. 그리스도의 평화주의는 이를 반대하는 것이 당혹스러울 정도로 현 상태에 대해 질책합니다. 그리스도의 평화주의를 반대하는 것은 그리스도의 이름으로 필요악을 저지르는 것이, 살인하고 불구자로 만들기 위해서 무기를 드는 것이, 도시 전체를 파괴하는 것이, 다른 국가들을 처벌하는 것이, 다른 사람들에 대한 경고로서 폭력행위들을 저지르는 것이, 마치 국가의 명령들이 시민들의 공동의 선을 보호하기 위한 목적으로 살인하는 것처럼 국가의 명령들을 따르는 것이, 그리고, 우리 자신들을, 우리의 자녀들을 그리고 우리 가족들을, 구약성서의 강령인 "눈에는 눈 그리고 이에는 이"를 계속하는 임무에 내맡겨서, 결국에는 모두다 하나님의 양의 이름 안에서 폭력의 가마솥에 모두가 죽는 것이 때때로 필요하다고 주장하는 것입니다.
When you declare your self to be a pacifist in the name of Christ, and promote the pacifist teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, you will be standing against the greatest foe you have ever faced and will require a courage you have never known.	당신이 스스로를 그리스도의 이름으로 평화주의자라고 선언하며, 예수와 그 제자들의 평화주의 가르침들을 장려할 때, 당신이 이제까지 맞이한 가장 큰 적을 마주하고 서 있게 될 것이며 당신이 결코 알지 못했던 용기를 요구할 것입니다.
First, to renounce war and espouse pacifism you stand against the devil himself. Satan rejoices over every Christian who sheds the blood of another, for in doing so the Christian demonstrates to all the world that he is different in name only. When the Christian is pushed, he pushes back, when insulted, he insults in kind, and when attacked he returns the assault with fervor. All this he does in the name of Christ, making a mockery of the Son of God. When the child of God lays down his/her arms and says "I cannot war no more" the devil losses a disciple and Jesus gains a disciple. Does this make us a new enemy in Satan? What matter does it make if it makes us a new friend of Christ!	첫째로, 전쟁을 포기하고 평화주의를 지지하기 위해서 당신은 악마 자체와 맞서는 것입니다. 사탄은 모든 그리스도인들이 서로에게 피를 흘리는 것을 즐거워합니다, 왜냐하면, 그렇게 함으로써 그리스도인은 오직 이름만으로 다를 뿐이라는 것을 세상 모든 사람들에게 증명하는 것이기 때문입니다. 그리스도인이 밀리면, 그 되 밀어 내며, 욕을 먹으면 비슷한 욕을 해대며, 그리고 공격 당하면 그는 극렬하게 공격합니다. 이 모든 것을 그는 그리스도의 이름으로 행하면서 하나님의 아들을 조롱합니다. 하나님의 자녀가 그의 무기를 내려 놓고서 "나는 더 이상 전쟁을 할 수 없다"라고 말할 때 악마는 제자를 잃으며 예수는 제자를 얻습니다. 이런 행위가 우리를 사탄의 새로운 원수로 만듭니까? 이런 행위가 우리를 그리스도의 새로운 친구로 만든다면 그게 무슨 상관입니까?
Secondly, to advance the cause of pacifism through faith and practice is to call into question the practice of those about us. The belief and practice of the pacifist casts the actions of others in foul light, as it should. This is not well received. Jesus said	두 번째로, 믿음과 실천을 통한 평화주의의 명분을 추구하는 것은 우리 주위의 사람들의 실천을 문제시하는 것입니다. 평화주의자의 신앙과 실천은 다른 사람들의 행위들을 어두운 빛으로 내던지는 것이며, 그렇게 해야만 합니다. 이런 행위는 환영 받지 못할 것입니다. 예수는 말합니다.
"And this is the judgment, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone that does evil hates the light , neither will they come to the light , lest their deeds be examined." John 3:19-20	"그 정죄는 이것이니 곧 빛이 세상에 왔으되 사람들이 자기 행위가 악하므로 빛보다 어두움을 더 사랑한 것이니라. 악을 행하는 자마다 빛을 미워하여 빛으로 오지 아니하나니 이는 그 행위가 드러날까 함이요" 요한복음 3:19-20
When the Christian pacifist makes his/her courageous stand for Christ in spite of all the persecution that it will incur, it makes the militaristic Christian appear cowardly. When the Christian pacifist is attacked it will not be from the unbelievers or those of different faiths, but he/she will be attacked by other Christians because it is other Christians that are the most exposed. Because they cannot attack your arguments they must attack the person advancing those arguments. The first word you will hear will be the word..."coward."	그리스도의 평화주의자가 뒤따를 모든 박해에도 불구하고 그리스도를 용감히 대변할 때, 군국주의적인 그리스도인을 겁쟁이처럼 보이게 만들 것입니다. 그리스도의 평화주의자가 공격 당한다면 그것은 불신자나 다른 신앙을 가진 사람들로부터가 아니며, 극명히 노출되는 것은 다른 그리스도인이기 때문에 다른 그리스도인들에 의하여 공격 당할 것입니다. 그들은 당신의 논리들을 공격할 수 없으므로 그 논리들을 지지하는 사람을 반드시 공격합니다. 당신이 듣게 되는 첫 단어는... "겁쟁이"일 것입니다.
Jesus was called a coward. How do we know this? Because everyone who turns the other cheek is called a coward. Of all the teachings of Christ this is the our greatest failure, turning the other cheek. It is our greatest failure because it requires the greatest amount of courage. We have a desire to return a blow for a blow and for it is the easiest response that requires no courage whatsoever. The beast of the field returns blow for blow, and the child who has yet mastered the ability to walk will return violence for violence. Violence is an expression of a perverse sense of justice and the Christian feels that he/she is entitled to such a response as anyone else. This has nothing to do with courage and has everything to do with ignorance and pride. How many have died doing something they thought was courageous but was in fact foolish!	예수도 겁쟁이라고 불렸습니다. 우리는 어떻게 이것을 알고 있습니까? 왜냐하면 다른 뺨을 돌려대는 사람은 누구나 겁쟁이라고 불리기 때문입니다. 그리스도의 모든 가르침들 중에서 이것이 우리의 가장 큰 어려움입니다, 다른 뺨을 돌려 대는 것. 그것은 가장 큰 용기를 필요로 하기에 가장 큰 어려움입니다. 우리는 주먹을 맞으면 주먹으로 받아 치려는 욕망을 가지고 있습니다, 왜냐하면 그것이 어떤 용기도 필요하지 않은 가장 쉬운 반응이기 때문입니다. 들판의 짐승들도 맞으면 되받아 치며, 아직 걸음마를 배우지 못한 아이도 폭력에는 폭력으로 대응합니다. 폭력은 왜곡된 정의의 개념의 표현이며 그리스도인은 다른 사람들과 마찬가지로 그런 대응을 행할 자격이 있다고 느낍니다. 이것은 용기와 아무런 관련이 없으며 무지와 교만과 모든 관계가 있습니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 자신들이 용감하다고 생각하였지만 사실 어리석은 일을 행하다가 죽어갔습니까!
It is far better to be called a coward for a an act of bravery than to be called courageous for an act of foolishness. Bravery has always been an act whereas an individual stands for his/her principles in spite of the opposition. Why is it the definition is only extended to the militant and not the pacifist? Because, the militant, lacking a reasonable argument for their position, must attack the pacifist himself/herself.	어리석은 행위에 대해 용감하다고 불리는 것보다 용감한 행위에 대하여 겁쟁이라고 불리는 것이 훨씬 낫습니다. 용감함은 언제나 한 개인이 반대를 무릅쓰고 자신의 원칙들을 고수하는 행위였습니다. 왜 그 정의가 오직 호전적인 사람들에게만 미치고 평화주의자에겐 미치지 않습니까? 왜냐하면, 호전적인 사람들은, 그들의 입지에 대한 합리적인 논리가 결여되어 있으므로, 평화주의자 자체를 공격하기 때문입니다.
Courage, is the willingness to stand up for your beliefs in a hostile environment. Courage does not mean to stand up for your believes in a friendly environment. Courage is the ability to hold a belief that is contrary to convention. It is hard to "not join the group," to follow the crowd. The moment one turns and faces the crowd that the confrontation begins. To face this confrontation requires courage. By declaring your stand for peace and non violence, you immediately set yourself in opposition to your Church, your Government, your neighbor, friends, and sometimes even family. This takes courage.	용기는, 적대적인 상황에서도 당신의 신념을 고수하고자 하는 의지입니다. 용기는 우호적인 상황에서 당신의 믿음들을 고수하는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 용기는 전통과 대치되는 믿음을 주장할 수 있는 능력입니다. 군중들을 따르기 위해서 "무리에 가입하지 않는 것"은 어렵습니다. 돌아서서 군중을 보는 순간 반목은 시작됩니다. 이런 반목을 직시하려면 용기가 필요합니다. 평화와 비폭력에 대한 당신의 입지를 선언함으로써, 당신은 그 즉시 자신을 당신의 교회, 당신의 정부, 당신의 이웃, 친구들, 그리고 때로는 가족과 반대의 위치에 세우게 됩니다. 이것은 용기가 있어야 합니다.
The coward is the one who follows the path of least resistance irregardless of the fact that it runs contrary to the dictates of the conscience. When one becomes a Christian it is evident that a certain level of behavior is expected. The believer knows that he/she should not lie, steal, commit adultery, covet others property, gossip, and that they should extend human kindness to all living beings. But, when it comes to violence and war it is just easier to go along with the crowd. This is cowardly, not bravery. When one performs bravery during time of war he receives a medal and honor among his fellow men. When one displays even greater bravery by refusing to fight in that same war, he receives scorn and reprisal. Knowing this, and yet still choosing pacifism is dedication to the teaching and principles of Christ.	겁쟁이는 양심의 명령들과 대치되는 방향으로 흘러간다는 사실에 개의치 않고 저항이 아주 적은 길을 따라 가는 사람입니다. 그리스도인이 되는 것은 일정 수준의 태도가 기대됩니다. 믿는 사람은 자신이 속이고, 훔치고, 간음하고, 다른 사람들의 재물을 탐내고, 비방해서는 안되며, 모든 살아 있는 존재들에 대하여 인간적인 친절함을 넓혀야 한다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러나, 폭력이나 전쟁을 맞이하게 되면, 군중들과 함께 걸어가기가 훨씬 쉽습니다. 이것은 비겁한 행위이며 용감함이 아닙니다. 전쟁 중에 용감함을 행하면 자신의 동료들 가운데서 훈장을 받습니다. 어떤 사람이 똑같은 전쟁에서 싸우기를 거부함으로써 심지어 더욱 큰 용감함을 발휘하면, 그는 경멸과 보복을 받습니다. 이러함을 알고 있지만, 하지만 여전히 평화주의를 선택하는 것은 그리스도의 가르침과 원칙들에 헌신하는 것입니다.
