Categorically, we may state that any
group that expresses, or supports a doctrine that one does not have the responsibility
to defend self, family or neighbor, if it is within their power to do so, would
be the most hated in their community and perhaps rightfully so. Even the basest among us often find it
within their nature to defend the weak. Augustine, Ambrose, Aquinas, and
Victoria (Franciscus de Victoria (ca. 1492-1546) all argued that
it was acceptable to kill in war but self defense was not allowed. But, there is
none more valuable to any society than the pacifist, and to sacrifice the life
of the pacifist is a great loss to any community. A pacifist must, all people,
work to preserve his or her life. The world is filled with violent people but
there are so few pacifists that every one lost is a great blow to the cause of
peace. The pacifist is the embodiment of the love of Christ, and it is his
or her responsibility to preserve their life by any means possible.

The pacifist uses violence to preserve their life, or that of another only
as the last possible option, the ultima ration (last resort). There are times when violence can only be
met by violence. There is no shame when we must subdue an attacker, using the
least amount of force as possible, nor is there any honor. When anyone
uses
violence for any reasons, both parties suffer. This is why it must be used when
there remains no other alternatives, the final option. Yet, no man or woman has the right to let
another suffer because of our ideology. Everyone should work to lift the burden
and ease the pain of our fellow creatures. Like the parable of the Good of Samaritan
in Luke 10:30-37 we see that we are our "brother's keeper."

It is here our detractors feel that the pacifist is inconsistent. No, there is a
vast difference in defending ourselves, family and neighbor and participating in
war. First, our defense is a matter of immediate personal necessity that
demands an immediate personal response. There is no enemy, we do not set
ambushes, there is no punishment or retributive element, there is no desire of
conquest, we do not use "conscripts" to aid our defense, we are not
fighting for the "common good," we are not fighting to defend
opinions, ideals, ideas, religion or even a way of life. When we defend ourselves
or others it is because we are confronted with an immediate situation that
cannot be remedied with flight. War is an act declared in advance, against a
defined enemy. Its objective is to destroy and punish through deceit or any
other means at its disposal. While some weapons may be considered immoral they
are all eventually used if the need for their use is required. War has
its goals,
and it is not to only stop an evil aggressor but to: protect property, gain
property, protect the "common good" (whatever the common good may be
defined at that point in time), punish evil, restore or maintain order, advance
political theory upon other nations, advance religious views, protect religious
views, or to strive for dominance over all other nations just because you
can.

Self defense and the
defense of the innocent in our midst, cannot be compared to the act of war. One
is violence institutionalized, the other is an act of immediate necessity. One
is for for purpose of advancing or preserving ideas and ideals, the other for
the immediate preservation of life. When the soldiers is attacked he holds
and returns fire. When the pacifist is attacked he retreats to gain safety of
himself and his loved ones, if attacked further, he shall flee yet again. When
there is no where else to go, he shall fight, for himself, his family, and for
his neighbor, knowing there is no other alternative. This is the command of our
Lord Jesus Christ as expressed on the Sermon on the Mount,

Why are we so afraid of the Sermon on the Mount? For the first three hundred
years of the Christian Church, they lived the teachings of this great message.
But Augustine, in his quest to make war palatable, decided that these verses
must not be taken literally, but allegorically. Augustine began to follow the
teachings of Ambrose, that every verse in the Bible has deeper, spiritual
meanings, each verse having up to seven different meanings. This set the pattern
that we use today, which is: If the Biblical verse does not support our views
then it must mean something other then its literal meaning. But, what is the
alternative? If someone strikes us should we strike back? Does that help the
situation? Violence for violence? Of course not! There is no reason for us not to
accept the Sermon on the Mount as our blueprint for successful
living.

The Greek verb tense used in this passage is very strong, indicating that if the
head of the house knew in advance he would certainly do something to prevent
loss or damage. The question is not one of protecting our property inasmuch as
to what extreme will we take to protect it? In a civilized society there is
always recourse to the courts or other civil options, including the police
department. But, there is no property more valuable than a human life. If one endangers
his/her life for the sake of the material then they they do not own the material
but the material owns them. A violent act, was committed can never be redressed.
All the reparations offered may soothe the conscience of the offender but can
never restore the victim to their original wholeness.
