PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION OF 
A HARMONY, TRANSLATION, AND EXAMINATION OF THE FOUR GOSPELS

[사복음서의 일치, 번역, 및 연구]의 초판에 대한 머리말

(The book was not allowed to be printed in Russia, but after a lapse of ten years arrangements were made to have it printed in Russian in Switzerland, and it was for that edition that this Preface was written.)

이 책은 러시아에서 출판이 허가되지 않았다, 그러나 십 년이 지난 뒤에 러시아와 스위스에서 출판할 준비가 되었고, 이 머리말이 기록된 것은 그 출판을 위한 것이다.)

FRIENDS of mine have offered to print this [harmony and translation of the Gospels] which I composed ten years ago, and I have agreed to this though the work is far from being completed and contains many defects. I do not now feel able to correct and finish it, as the concentrated and sustained intensity of spiritual enthusiasm I ex­perienced during the whole time I was writing it cannot now be renewed.

나의 친구들이 내가 십년 전에 집필한 [복음서에 대한 일치와 번역]의 출판할 것을 제안하였다, 그리고 나는 그 작품이 결코 완전하지 않고 많은 결점들을 지니고 있었지만 이것에 승낙하였다. 나는 지금 그것을 교정하고 마무리 지을 수 있다고 느끼지 않는다, 왜냐하면 내가 그것을 집필하고 있던 전체 기간 동안에 내가 경험하고 있던 정신적인 열정이 지속적으로 집중되던 강렬함을 이제는 되살릴 수 없기 때문이다.

But I think that such as it is the work may be of use to people if it conveys to them even a small portion of the enlightenment I experienced while at work on it, and the firm conviction of the truth of the path that was opening out to me, which I still follow with the more joy the further I proceed.

그러나 나는 만일 내가 그것에 대해 작업하는 동안 경험한 약간의 깨달음과, 나에게 활짝 열려 있었던 길이 진리라는 굳건한 확신을 사람들에게 전해 줄 수 있다면, 변변치 못하지만 그 작품이 사람들에게 유용할 것이라고 생각한다. 그리고 나는 아직도 이 진리를 내가 멀리 나아가면 가면 갈수록 더한 즐거움으로 따르고 있다.

또 다른 십년의 간격이 지난 뒤에, 러시아어로 영국에서 발행된 이후의 더욱 조심스럽게 편집된 판

this book was written by me during an unfor­gettable period of rapturous realization of the fact that the Christian teaching expressed in the Gospels is not the strange doctrine that had tormented me by its contradictions and that is preached by the Church-but a clear, profound and simple explana­tion of life, which corresponds to the highest needs of the human soul.

이 책은 복음서에 표현된 그리스도의 가르침이 그 모순들로서 나를 괴롭히며 이상한 교리들이 아니며, 그리고 -명료하고, 심오하며 그리고 단순한 삶의 설명으로서, 인간의 영혼의 가장 높은 요구들에 부응하는 것이라는 실에 대한 열광적인 깨달음을 가진 잊을 수 없는 기간 동안에 나에 의해서 집필되었다.

Under the influence of that delight and en­thusiasm I unfortunately did not confine myself to setting out the comprehensible parts of the Gospels which give this teaching; nor did I omit what does not harmonize with the fundamental and main meaning and neither confirms nor contradicts it, but I tried to give to those obscure passages a sense in conformity with the general meaning. These efforts involved me in artificial and probably in­accurate philological explanations which instead of strengthening the conviction of the general meaning tend rather to weaken it; and now, though I have realized this mistake, yet being fully absorbed in other work of a similar nature, I have decided not to rearrange the book in an endeavour to separate the superfluous from the essential-for I know that comment on this marvellous book, the Four Gospels, can never be ended, and I leave my work in its present form and consent to its now being reprinted in that shape.

그런 환희와 열정의 영향아래서 나는 불행하게도 이런 가르침을 주는 복음서들의 이해 가능한 부분들을 설명함에 열중하지 못했다; 그리고 근본적이고 중심적인 의미와 일치하지 않거나 그것을 확증하지도 반박하지도 않는 것을 생략하지도 않았으면서, 그들 애매한 구절들에 일반적인 의미와 일치하는 의미를 부여하려고 시도했다. 이런 노력은 내가 인위적이며 아마도 부정확한 문헌학 적인 설명들에 끌어 들였고 그것은 일반적인 의미에 대한 확신을 강화시켜 주기 보다는 그것을 더욱 약화시키기 쉬웠다; 그리고 지금은, 비록 나는 이런 오류를 깨달았지만, 비슷한 성격의 다른 작품에 너무나 몰두하여 있어서, 불필요한 것들을 필수적인 것들로부터 분리하려는 노력에서 그 책을 정리하지 않기로 결정하였다-왜냐하면 이 놀라운 책, 즉 사복음서에 대한 주해는 결코 끝이 있을 수 없음을 알고 있으며, 나는 나의 작업을 현재의 모습으로 두고 그런 모양으로 다시 출판될 것을 허락하기 때문이다.

Those to whom truth is precious and who are free from prejudice and sincerely seek the truth, will be able themselves to separate the superfluous from the essential parts without infringing what is es­sential in it. For those who are prejudiced and have decided in advance that truth is only to be found in the Church interpretations, no exactitude or clarity of exposition could be convincing.

진리가 소중하며 편견에서 자유로우며 진지하게 진리를 추구하는 사람들은 핵심적인 부분들에서 불필요한 것들을 그 안에 들어 있는 핵심적인 것들을 손상시키지 않고 스스로 분리할 수 있을 것이다. 편견에 치우쳐 있으며 진리는 오직 교회의 해석들에만 발견될 수 있다고 사전에 결정한 사람들에게는, 어떤 정확함 또는 명료함도 납득될 수 없다.
